To help your iPhone last longer on a day when you use it more than usual, turn on Adaptive Power: go to Settings > Battery > Power Mode and enable it. Apple says the feature can adjust power use automatically, but does not promise a specific number of extra minutes or hours.

Turn on Adaptive Power

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Battery, then Power Mode.
  3. Turn on Adaptive Power.

Once enabled, it runs in the background and may make power-saving adjustments on days when your usage is higher than usual. If you see an Adaptive Power notification and do not want alerts, turn off Adaptive Power Notifications in the same Power Mode screen; that does not turn off the feature. What Adaptive Power changes

Depending on usage, Apple says Adaptive Power may make performance adjustments, slightly lower display brightness, limit background activity, and automatically turn on Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20%. Apple publishes no quantified runtime gain for Adaptive Power, so the result can vary and should not be treated as a guaranteed extension.

Check whether your iPhone supports it

Apple’s iOS 27 guide says Adaptive Power is available on iPhone 15 Pro or later. Apple’s dedicated feature page lists iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 models, iPhone 17 models, and iPhone Air; a September 2026 troubleshooting page also lists iPhone 18 Pro models. Because Apple’s documentation and model availability can change, check Settings > Battery > Power Mode on your own phone for the current control.

Give it time, and know when it may not act

Adaptive Power needs at least seven days to learn your charging habits before it engages. It also does not manage performance while you are using features that require maximum performance, such as the camera or games with Game Mode on. That means enabling it may not produce an immediate visible change.

Adaptive Power or Low Power Mode?

Option How it works Useful when Trade-off
Adaptive Power Automatic adjustments based on recent usage patterns You want the iPhone to respond to higher-than-usual use days May adjust brightness, performance, or background activity; it needs time to learn charging habits.
Low Power Mode Can be switched on manually; Adaptive Power may also turn it on at 20% battery You want to conserve charge immediately Some tasks may run more slowly and background activity or selected features are reduced. It turns off automatically when iPhone charges to 80% or higher.

On iPhone 15 or later, Low Power Mode is also under Settings > Battery > Power Mode. On iPhone 14 or earlier, find it under Settings > Battery. Apple’s instructions for power modes

If the battery still drains quickly

  1. Open Settings > Battery and review Daily Usage, app and system activity, and battery insights. Background Activity, frequent notifications, or low signal and no coverage can help identify causes.
  2. Consider your connection: Apple says Wi-Fi generally uses less battery than cellular, and 5G Auto can switch to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience.
  3. If the drain began just after an iOS update, wait a few days. Apple says update-related tasks may continue in the background and temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance.
  4. If Battery Health shows Service, Apple recommends considering battery service.

These checks and recommendations are covered in Apple’s battery-drain troubleshooting guidance.

Battery life is not battery lifespan

Adaptive Power is intended to help with daily runtime: Apple defines battery life as how long a device runs before it needs recharging. Battery lifespan means how long the battery lasts before it needs replacement. Apple says iPhone 14 and earlier batteries are designed to retain 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions; for iPhone 15 models, the design figure is 80% after 1,000 cycles under ideal conditions. These are capacity-retention figures, not a measure of how much runtime Adaptive Power adds. Actual capacity depends on how a device is regularly used and charged.
