To share your Samsung Galaxy phone’s mobile data with another device, open Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering, then turn on Mobile Hotspot. On the laptop, tablet, or other phone, choose your Galaxy’s hotspot name in its Wi-Fi settings and enter the password shown on the Galaxy.
Before you turn on the hotspot
- Your Galaxy needs an active mobile data connection. A standard mobile hotspot shares the phone’s cellular data; it does not simply extend a nearby Wi-Fi network. Samsung Singapore explains the feature and setup.
- Your mobile carrier and plan must allow tethering. Allowances, restrictions, and any extra charges depend on the carrier and account, so check your plan before relying on the hotspot. Samsung’s guidance and Samsung Colombia’s guidance both call out plan rules and possible charges.
- Using a hotspot consumes mobile data and battery. There is no universal data-use or battery-life figure: both depend on what connected devices do and on the phone and network.
Turn on Mobile Hotspot
- Open Settings on your Galaxy.
- Tap Connections.
- Tap Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
- Turn on Mobile Hotspot. The phone will make a Wi-Fi network available for nearby devices. Samsung’s current instructions document this path, though labels or layout can vary by model, carrier, and software version. Samsung Gulf’s setup instructions.
Check the hotspot name and password
In the Mobile Hotspot screen, open Configure if you want to review or change the network name, password, security setting, or band. Keep password protection enabled and use a password that is not easy to guess. The available security choices and controls differ across Galaxy models, software versions, and carrier builds; Samsung Gulf’s instructions describe WPA2 or WPA3 on supported configurations, not as a guarantee for every phone. Connect a laptop, tablet, or another phone
- On the device you want to connect, open its Wi-Fi settings.
- Select the hotspot network name shown on your Galaxy.
- Enter the hotspot password when prompted.
If the Galaxy offers a QR code on its hotspot screen, the other device may be able to scan it to join without typing the password. QR-code availability depends on the phone’s software and configuration. Samsung’s instructions for supported configurations.
If the other device cannot find or use the hotspot
The hotspot network does not appear
- In the hotspot configuration screen, try changing the band to 2.4 GHz. Samsung identifies this as a compatibility option when a client device cannot find the network; 5 GHz may be available on supported configurations. Samsung Singapore’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Check that Hidden network is turned off, if that option appears. A hidden hotspot will not be listed like an ordinary Wi-Fi network.
- Confirm Mobile Hotspot is on and the Galaxy still has a working mobile data connection.
The device connects but has no internet
Check that mobile data works on the Galaxy itself, then confirm that your carrier account permits tethering. Carrier restrictions, account changes, or a lack of mobile-data service can prevent hotspot internet access even when the Wi-Fi connection is established. The hotspot turns off or uses more data than expected
Some Galaxy versions provide a hotspot data counter and a data limit that can switch the hotspot off when the limit is reached. Depending on the model and software, advanced settings may also include power-saving or automatic-timeout controls. Look in the Mobile Hotspot settings for the controls available on your phone; the exact labels and paths can differ.
