Save the file, then restart the server. For a stricter no-replenishment configuration, also set RespawnMultiplier=0.00; the Indie Stone staff example additionally uses ZombieRespawn=4 (None) and PopulationMultiplier=0.00. These settings prevent future population restoration, but they do not delete zombies that already exist in the world.

What disabling respawn actually changes
Project Zomboid separates several behaviors that are often described collectively as “respawning.” The main switch is the interval-based restoration controlled by RespawnHours. A value of 0 means the server will not run that periodic zombie-respawn process.

Other values affect different parts of the population system. RespawnUnseenHours determines how long a chunk must remain unseen before it can become eligible for a respawn event. RespawnMultiplier controls what fraction of the desired population is restored when an event occurs. The sandbox API also exposes a ZombieRespawn mode, and the Indie Stone staff example sets it to 4, described as None. That example sets PopulationMultiplier=0.00 as well, removing the desired-population target used for replenishment.
Turning these options off does not erase zombies already loaded into the save. It also does not stop a zombie from walking into an area from another location. Population redistribution (migration) is separate from respawn and is exposed by the API as redistributeHours.

Before editing the server profile
Stop the server completely
Do not edit a live profile and expect the running process to pick up the changes. Use the server’s normal stop control and wait until the process has shut down. On a managed host, the button names vary, but the required sequence is the same: stop, edit, save, and start again.
Identify the profile that the server actually uses
A server can have more than one profile. The file must belong to the profile you launch, not merely to a different test world in the same directory. Hosted-server documentation commonly uses servertest_SandboxVars.lua beside servertest.ini. If your profile has another name, use that profile’s matching _SandboxVars.lua file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake a backup
Copy the original file to a safe location before changing it. A backup gives you a quick rollback if a typo prevents the server from starting or if you later want to restore the previous population rules. Keep the backup outside the profile’s active configuration files so the server does not mistake it for another profile.

%UserProfile%ZomboidServer
Open that directory after the server has generated its profile. The relevant file is the profile’s sandbox file, such as servertest_SandboxVars.lua. It normally sits next to the corresponding .ini file.
Managed or rented server
Use the host’s file manager, SFTP access, or other configuration editor to open the server profile directory. Look for the same profile-specific SandboxVars.lua naming pattern and the matching .ini file. If the panel offers several worlds or instances, select the one that is started by your server task. The exact folder tree and control labels depend on the provider, so follow its normal file-edit and restart workflow rather than assuming a local Windows path.

Check that the server has been started at least once and that you are viewing the active profile rather than a generic configuration directory. A newly created profile may not have every optional setting until the game has written its sandbox file. Do not create a second file with a guessed profile name; first confirm which profile the startup configuration references.
Settings to use for a no-respawn server
Edit the existing entries in the file rather than adding duplicate keys. Lua configuration is sensitive to spelling, capitalization, commas, and the surrounding syntax. The following values describe the controls relevant to zombie replenishment.

| Setting | Value for a strict no-replenishment setup | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
RespawnHours |
0 |
The interval-based respawn process. Current server-setting guidance defines zero as no zombie respawn. |
RespawnMultiplier |
0.00 |
The fraction of the desired population restored at a respawn event. Zero prevents that replenishment fraction. |
ZombieRespawn |
4 |
The sandbox population-respawn mode. The Indie Stone staff example labels mode 4 as None. |
PopulationMultiplier |
0.00 |
The desired population target. The staff example uses zero when the goal is to eliminate population replenishment. |
RespawnUnseenHours |
Not required when respawn is disabled | How many in-game hours a chunk must remain unseen before it can become eligible for respawn. It is an eligibility timer, not a migration control. |
The minimum change is RespawnHours=0. Adding the other zero or None values follows the stricter staff example and guards against replenishment paths exposed by the particular build. Keep the setting names and value types used by the file; do not replace numeric entries with quoted text.
Step-by-step: edit a dedicated server
- Stop the server. Confirm that the process is no longer running before touching the configuration.
- Open the profile directory. On Windows, browse to
%UserProfile%ZomboidServer. On a host, open the corresponding profile in its file manager or remote file tool. - Back up the sandbox file. Copy the active file, for example
servertest_SandboxVars.lua, before making changes. - Open the file as plain text. Use an editor that will not add rich-text formatting or change the file extension.
- Find the respawn entries. Search for
RespawnHours,RespawnMultiplier,ZombieRespawn, andPopulationMultiplier. If an entry already exists, change its value in place. - Apply the primary setting. Set the interval to zero:
RespawnHours=0
- Apply the strict profile if desired. The staff example’s combination is:
RespawnHours=0
RespawnMultiplier=0.00
ZombieRespawn=4
PopulationMultiplier=0.00
- Preserve valid syntax. Keep any commas, braces, or formatting required by the surrounding file. Do not leave two competing assignments for the same key.
- Save without changing the filename. Ensure the editor did not append an extra extension such as
.txt. - Start the server again. Restarting loads the edited sandbox values. A running instance will not retroactively apply them to an already loaded world.
Changing the setting on a hosted server
Hosted panels differ, but the configuration logic does not. Stop the instance, open the profile’s files, edit the matching _SandboxVars.lua beside its .ini, save, and use the host’s start or restart control. If the panel has a built-in sandbox editor, verify that it writes to the same profile file; some panels expose more than one world or preset.
Recommended Free Tools
After the restart, check the panel’s console or file browser to confirm that the edited timestamp changed and that the server started the intended profile. If the panel regenerates configuration from a preset, make the change in that preset or disable regeneration according to the host’s documented workflow; otherwise a later restart can overwrite the file.
Why zombies can still appear afterward
Existing zombies were not removed
The no-respawn values affect future population restoration. Zombies that were already alive, saved, or loaded into the world remain there. A city can therefore still look populated immediately after the restart even though no new respawn event will replenish it.

Zombies migrated from elsewhere
A zombie can walk into a cleared area from a neighboring cell. That movement is redistribution, not respawn. The API exposes redistribution separately through redistributeHours, so disabling the respawn interval does not freeze every zombie in place.
The area was eligible under the old settings
An unseen chunk can become eligible according to RespawnUnseenHours. If the old configuration allowed a respawn event before you changed the file, the resulting zombies remain after the restart. The setting does not function as a global deletion command.
The wrong profile was edited
If the server behaves exactly as before, compare the profile name in the startup configuration with the filename you changed. Editing a spare SandboxVars.lua, a local single-player file, or another world’s profile has no effect on the running instance.
The file was overwritten or not loaded
Some hosted workflows regenerate files when an instance starts. Reopen the file after the restart and verify that your values are still present. Also check for misspelled keys, duplicate assignments, or a filename changed accidentally by the text editor. A syntax error can cause the server to reject the profile or fall back to another configuration.
Best Value
How to verify the change safely
- Stop and start the same server profile after saving.
- Reopen the file and confirm that the intended values survived the restart.
- Use a location that has already been cleared as a baseline; do not interpret surviving old zombies as proof that the setting failed.
- Allow enough in-game time for the old respawn interval to have produced a visible change, while remembering that migration can still bring zombies in.
- Review the server log or host console for startup errors if the world does not load or the settings revert.
Verification is about the server loading the correct profile, not about making every zombie disappear. A successful configuration leaves existing creatures alone while preventing the configured replenishment process from adding population.
Version and preset cautions
Project Zomboid’s sandbox options are version-sensitive. The current official API exposes zombieRespawn, respawnHours, respawnUnseenHours, and respawnMultiplier, while older community guides may show different defaults or option names. Treat historical presets as examples, not authoritative files for every server build.
Before copying a block from an old guide, generate or open the sandbox file produced by the exact build you run and check which keys it contains. Keep the capitalization used by that file. If your build does not expose one of the optional controls, rely on the documented key that it does provide rather than inserting an unsupported preset wholesale. The primary interval rule remains the same in current server-setting guidance: RespawnHours=0 means no periodic zombie respawn.
Choosing between a minimal and strict configuration
| Goal | Values | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Disable the normal respawn timer | RespawnHours=0 |
You want the standard periodic restoration process disabled while leaving other sandbox population behavior at its existing values. |
| Eliminate configured replenishment paths | RespawnHours=0, RespawnMultiplier=0.00, ZombieRespawn=4, PopulationMultiplier=0.00 |
You want the stricter combination shown in the Indie Stone staff example and understand that movement from other areas is still separate. |
| Control eligibility without disabling respawn | Adjust RespawnUnseenHours |
You still want respawn events but only after a chosen unseen period. This is not a no-respawn setup. |
Do not change RespawnUnseenHours expecting it to stop migration. It only changes when an unseen chunk can qualify for a respawn event. Likewise, changing population values cannot remove creatures that the save already contains.
Recovery and rollback
If the server will not start
Stop it again and compare the edited file with your backup. Look for a missing comma, a damaged brace, a duplicated key, a misspelled setting, or an accidental extension change. Restore the backup to return to the last known working configuration, then reapply one change at a time.
If the values keep reverting
Determine whether the host or startup script regenerates the profile from a preset. Edit the source preset used by that workflow or use the host’s supported configuration editor. Recheck the file after every restart until the values remain in place.
If you want the previous behavior back
Stop the server, restore the backed-up SandboxVars.lua, and start the same profile. Keep in mind that any zombies already spawned while the no-respawn configuration was active are part of the save’s current state; restoring the old settings does not rewind the world.
Quick Recap
Practical checklist
- Server stopped before editing.
- Correct profile selected in
%UserProfile%ZomboidServeror the host’s equivalent directory. - Backup made.
RespawnHoursset to0.- Optional strict values set as supported by the installed build:
RespawnMultiplier=0.00,ZombieRespawn=4, andPopulationMultiplier=0.00. - File saved with its original name and valid syntax.
- Server restarted and the file checked afterward.
- Remaining zombies interpreted as existing population or migration, not automatic proof of a failed edit.
