There is no single “turn off all AI” switch in Windows 11. Recall snapshots, Windows Studio Effects, Copilot in Windows, Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps, and organization-managed AI features each have separate controls. Identify the feature you are seeing, then use its supported setting: you can stop Recall from saving snapshots, pause it temporarily, remove Recall entirely, disable camera effects, turn off Copilot inside supported Office apps, or ask an administrator to change a managed-device policy. Menu names and availability can differ by device hardware, Windows build, app version, account type, and staged rollout.
Windows AI features use different controls
“Windows AI” describes several unrelated experiences rather than one background service. Turning off one feature does not disable the others. It also matters whether you want to stop processing, prevent new data from being collected, remove an optional Windows component, or merely hide an icon.

- Stop or remove a feature: prevents future use, but the data consequences depend on the feature. Removing Recall, for example, deletes saved Recall snapshots.
- Pause a feature: is temporary and can be reversed from the same surface.
- Filter content: limits what a feature handles without disabling it everywhere.
- Hide a shortcut or icon: changes the interface only. It does not necessarily disable the underlying feature.
- Use an organization policy: applies administrator-controlled restrictions and may be unavailable on a personal PC.

The instructions below focus on Windows 11 controls documented by Microsoft. They do not claim to cover every AI-connected app, Insider build, or future feature.

Turn off Recall snapshots
Recall is opt-in for snapshot saving. Until a user enables it, Windows does not save Recall snapshots. If you enabled it and want to stop future captures while keeping Recall installed, turn off the Save snapshots setting.

Stop future snapshot saving
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open Recall & snapshots.
- Switch Save snapshots to Off.
This prevents new snapshots from being saved. It is different from removing Recall: the Recall component remains on Windows, and any snapshots already stored are not automatically removed by this switch. Review and delete existing snapshots separately if you do not want them retained.
Pause saving temporarily
For a short interruption, use the Recall icon in the Windows system tray and choose the pause option. Pausing is useful when you want to prevent captures during a meeting, while handling sensitive material, or for another limited period. Because it is a temporary control, check the tray status afterward if you need saving to remain paused.
Remove Recall from Windows
Removing Recall is a stronger action. Microsoft says that previously saved Recall snapshots are deleted when Recall is removed, and the process requires a restart.
- Open Windows Search and type Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Find Recall in the list of optional Windows features and clear its checkbox.
- Select OK and allow Windows to apply the change.
- Restart the PC when prompted.
Choose this route only if you want Recall removed rather than merely inactive. Deleting the component means you lose the saved snapshots as part of the removal process.
Limit what Recall captures without disabling it
Recall includes filters for apps and supported-browser websites. Add an app or site to the Recall filters when you want to keep the feature available for other work but exclude selected content. Filtering is narrower than switching off Save snapshots: it changes what appears in Recall rather than stopping snapshot saving globally.

Website filtering concerns the content of the foreground browser tab that Recall can include. It does not prevent the browser, your internet service provider, the site itself, or other parties from knowing that the site was visited. Filtering is therefore a Recall display and capture control, not a way to erase ordinary web activity.
Delete snapshots that already exist
If you keep Recall installed but no longer want historical snapshots, use Recall’s deletion controls to remove them. Turning off Save snapshots stops future collection; it does not serve as a command to erase the existing snapshot store. Check the available time range or item-selection options in your Recall interface before confirming deletion.

Disable Windows Studio Effects
Studio Effects are camera effects such as background or appearance adjustments. Availability depends on the camera hardware and Windows version, so one PC may show more effects than another.
Use Quick Settings for a fast change
- Select the network, volume, or battery area on the Windows taskbar to open Quick Settings.
- Choose the Studio Effects tile. If it is not visible, use Quick Settings editing to add the tile when your build provides it.
- Turn off the effect or effects you do not want.
This is the quickest way to disable effects for calls or recording sessions. The tile and individual effect names can vary with hardware and Windows updates.

Use camera settings for a persistent per-camera choice
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices, then Cameras.
- Choose the front-facing camera.
- Turn off the available Studio Effects you do not want.
Windows also documents controls through the Camera app. If an effect does not appear in Quick Settings or camera settings, the camera or current Windows build may not support it. Do not assume that a missing toggle means the effect is active; first check the camera preview or the app that is using the camera.
Handle Copilot separately from Windows settings
Copilot appears in more than one place. A Windows Copilot surface, a Copilot icon, and Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote are not the same control. Hiding an icon changes discoverability, while disabling an app setting changes whether that app enables Copilot.
Disable Copilot in supported Microsoft 365 apps
For supported Windows desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, Microsoft documents an app-level checkbox. The option is described for people signed in with a personal Microsoft account; Microsoft says it is not available for work or school accounts.
- Open the Microsoft 365 app you want to change.
- Select File, then Options.
- Open the Copilot section.
- Clear Enable Copilot.
- Select OK.
- Close and restart the app if it does not immediately reflect the change.
The setting applies per app and per device. Disabling Copilot in Word does not automatically disable it in Excel or PowerPoint, so repeat the steps in each app where the option is available.
Microsoft’s support documentation lists minimum app versions for this control as of March 13, 2025. If the Copilot page or checkbox is missing, update the app and check the account type before assuming the setting has been removed. Current labels and eligibility can change as Microsoft updates the apps.

Understand the difference between hiding an icon and disabling Copilot
Removing a Copilot ribbon icon or another shortcut only changes that entry point. Microsoft notes that hiding the icon does not prevent access through other methods. Use the app-level Enable Copilot setting when your goal is to disable Copilot in that app; use icon customization only when you want a less prominent interface.
Copilot memory and personalization are account controls
The Copilot service has separate controls for personalization and memory. Turning memory off does not automatically delete memories that were already saved. These settings govern the Copilot account or service, not a Windows-wide AI switch. If your concern is retained Copilot information rather than the presence of an icon, review the privacy controls in the Copilot service itself and treat deletion and disablement as separate actions.
When you see Copilot in Windows
A Windows Copilot icon or app is distinct from Microsoft 365 Copilot. Hiding the icon removes the shortcut but does not prove that the Copilot app or service is disabled. Consumer Windows settings do not provide one documented switch that disables every Copilot surface. If the Copilot app is installed on a managed PC, an administrator may be able to remove it through policy; personal and managed devices can therefore show different options.

Work and school computers may be governed by Microsoft’s WindowsAI Policy CSP. These are management policies, not ordinary consumer Settings steps. Documented policy capabilities include disabling Recall snapshot saving, removing the Microsoft Copilot app, and disabling Cocreator functionality in Paint.

A policy can also make a setting unavailable or greyed out.
- If a Recall control is locked, ask the device administrator whether snapshot saving is managed by policy.
- If Copilot cannot be removed or an app setting is unavailable, the organization may control installation and access.
- If Paint Cocreator is disabled, do not try to bypass the restriction with a personal setting; the policy is intentional on a managed device.
Contact IT when a control is missing, disabled, or repeatedly returns after you change it. Administrators should consult the WindowsAI Policy CSP documentation for the policy name, supported operating systems, and deployment method rather than applying a consumer workaround.
Choose the least disruptive control for your goal

Troubleshoot missing or ineffective controls
The Recall page is missing
Recall availability depends on the Windows build, device eligibility, and rollout. Install current Windows updates, then search Settings for Recall or Recall & snapshots. If the PC is managed, ask IT whether policy hides the page. Do not infer that Recall is active merely because another AI feature is present.
Recall still shows old material after Save snapshots is off
Save snapshots controls future collection. Existing snapshots remain until you delete them or remove Recall. Open Recall’s deletion controls and remove the stored items you no longer want.

The Windows Features list has no Recall entry
The optional feature is not exposed on every Windows edition or build. Verify that you are using Windows 11 and that updates have completed. If the PC is managed, policy or servicing configuration may also control availability. Do not uncheck unrelated Windows features as a substitute.
The Studio Effects tile is unavailable
Studio Effects are hardware- and version-dependent. Check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras and select the front-facing camera. If no effects are listed there or in the Camera app, the camera may not support them on that system.
The Copilot checkbox is missing in an Office app
Confirm that you are using a supported Windows desktop version, signed in with a personal Microsoft account, and running a current app build. The documented checkbox is not available for work or school accounts. A missing option can also reflect a changed rollout or a managed configuration.
The Copilot icon disappeared but Copilot still opens
That is expected when only the icon was hidden. Icon removal is not feature disablement. To disable Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote, use that app’s File > Options > Copilot setting when it is available. Other Copilot surfaces require their own control or administrator policy.

On a work or school PC, an administrator may enforce the feature state through WindowsAI Policy CSP or another management configuration. Ask IT to confirm the policy instead of repeatedly changing the local setting.
