How to Turn Off Viewing Data on an Amazon Fire TV

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a smart television with Fire TV, open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings and opt out of Over-the-air Viewing Data (or the similarly named viewing-data control). This setting covers over-the-air television received through an antenna connected directly to the TV.

It is not a master switch for every kind of Fire TV data. Device Usage Data, third-party App Usage Data, Interest-based Ads, and data processed by services such as Prime Video have separate controls or policies.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The exact steps

  1. From the Fire TV smart television’s home screen, open Settings.
  2. Choose Preferences.
  3. Open Privacy Settings.
  4. Look for the control referring to Over-the-air Viewing Data or a viewing-data opt-out.
  5. Turn the control off, or choose the option to stop providing the data.

Amazon’s official FAQ gives this menu path but does not specify a deeper submenu or guarantee one exact toggle label for every television. If your wording differs slightly, use the control whose description refers to over-the-air television received through an antenna connected directly to the TV.

What “Viewing Data” means in this setting

Amazon calls the category Over-the-air Viewing Data. It concerns information sent to Amazon about your use of broadcast television that reaches the television through an antenna plugged directly into that smart TV with Fire TV.

That definition is narrower than “everything you watch.” The FAQ does not establish that this opt-out covers streaming activity, viewing inside individual apps, searches, or data collected by third-party services. Those activities can have separate controls and privacy notices.

When this control is relevant

  • You watch local broadcast channels through an antenna connected directly to the Fire TV television.
  • You want to stop providing Amazon information about that antenna-based viewing.
  • You are using a smart TV with Fire TV rather than assuming that every Fire TV streaming product exposes the same option.

When it may not address your concern

  • Your concern is viewing inside a streaming app.
  • You want to limit operating-system telemetry, app-open events, or advertising identifiers.
  • Your antenna is connected to another tuner, set-top box, or receiver rather than directly to the television.

If you cannot find the option

Amazon documents this particular opt-out for smart TVs with Fire TV. It does not say that every Fire TV streaming device has the control, and its FAQ does not provide a model-by-model list, software-version list, or universal toggle label.

  1. Confirm that the product is a Fire TV smart television, not a separate Fire TV streaming device attached to another display.
  2. Return to Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings and review the complete page rather than looking only for the exact words “Viewing Data.”
  3. Check the television manufacturer’s current settings or support information for your specific model. Do not assume that a menu path from another model applies to yours.
  4. If your television supports account-based privacy management, try the account route described below.

An absent control does not prove that the television collects every category of viewing information, nor does it prove that another Fire TV model has the same setting. It means only that Amazon’s documented control is not visible where you are looking.

Use the account privacy page when your model supports it

Amazon says that certain smart TVs with Fire TV allow privacy settings to be managed from an Amazon account. Sign in at amazon.com/mycd, open Privacy Settings, and then choose Amazon Devices Privacy. Look for the same over-the-air viewing-data choice and opt out if it is offered.

This is an alternative for supported televisions, not a universal account switch. Amazon also states that these settings are device-specific, so changing a setting for one television should not be treated as changing it for every Fire TV device associated with the account.

How the other Fire TV privacy controls differ

Privacy Settings contains several controls with similar-sounding names. Choosing the wrong one can leave the data category you care about unchanged.

Control Where to find it Data category What changing it does Availability or limits
Over-the-air Viewing Data Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings Use of over-the-air TV received through an antenna connected directly to a smart TV with Fire TV Lets you opt out of providing this viewing information to Amazon Amazon documents it for smart TVs with Fire TV; the exact label and deeper menu are not stated
Device Usage Data Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings > Device Usage Data Data collected by the device operating system Turning it off stops Amazon processing this data for customized marketing offers and product improvement It does not stop processing needed for device features, other data used for interest-based advertising, or data related to Amazon services such as Prime Video
Collect App Usage Data Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings > Collect App Usage Data Third-party app activity, including opening, closing, and duration of use Controls collection of that app-usage category Separate from over-the-air Viewing Data
Interest-based Ads Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings Advertising and analytics use of a resettable advertising ID made available to apps on certain Amazon devices Controls the interest-based advertising setting Separate from both viewing-data and device-usage controls

What turning off Device Usage Data does—and does not do

Device Usage Data is often mistaken for the viewing-data switch because both appear in Privacy Settings. Amazon says that turning Device Usage Data off stops processing of that device-usage data for two purposes: serving customized marketing offers and improving Amazon’s products and features.

Amazon also lists boundaries for that choice:

  • It does not stop processing required for device features such as Parental Controls or the Recents row.
  • It does not necessarily stop marketing offers from appearing.
  • It does not stop interest-based advertising that relies on data other than Device Usage Data.
  • It does not cover data related to your use of Amazon services such as Prime Video on the device.

Therefore, turning off Device Usage Data is not a substitute for opting out of Over-the-air Viewing Data. If your goal is to stop Amazon receiving information about antenna television, use the viewing-data control itself. If you also want to reduce operating-system usage data, review Device Usage Data separately.

App activity and streaming services have separate boundaries

Third-party app activity

The Collect App Usage Data control concerns third-party applications. Amazon defines the category as information about when those apps are opened and closed and how long they are used. It is distinct from antenna viewing, so changing the over-the-air setting does not automatically change this app-activity setting.

Amazon services such as Prime Video

Amazon’s explanation of Device Usage Data specifically says that turning that setting off does not cover data related to use of Amazon services such as Prime Video. The over-the-air opt-out likewise should not be described as a way to disable all streaming-service data processing. For service-specific choices, Amazon directs users to the relevant service or app settings.

Third-party privacy controls

For a third-party app, review the provider’s own settings and privacy notice. A Fire TV system-level opt-out cannot be assumed to override the provider’s separate data practices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision guide

Use the concern that best matches your situation:

  • Antenna television: open Privacy Settings and opt out of Over-the-air Viewing Data.
  • Operating-system telemetry used for marketing and product improvement: review Device Usage Data.
  • How often a third-party app is opened or used: review Collect App Usage Data and the app provider’s own controls.
  • Advertising identifier and interest-based ads: review Interest-based Ads.
  • Data connected to Prime Video or another Amazon service: use that service’s privacy settings; the Device Usage Data switch is not a blanket opt-out.

These controls can be changed independently. Selecting one does not imply that the others have changed.

Before you change the setting

A quick identification check prevents most mistakes. The documented control applies when the antenna is connected directly to the television’s antenna input. If the antenna feeds a separate tuner, DVR, receiver, or set-top box, the Fire TV television may not be the device handling that broadcast signal. In that situation, this particular control may not describe the data flow you are trying to change.

Also identify whether you are using a built-in Fire TV smart television or a Fire TV streaming device plugged into a television. Amazon’s FAQ specifically describes smart TVs with Fire TV. It does not promise that a stick, cube, or other separate streaming product will show the same over-the-air option. Use the product’s own privacy documentation instead of copying a menu path from a different product.

What the opt-out changes—and what it does not promise

The documented action is an opt-out of providing Amazon information about use of over-the-air TV content. Amazon’s wording does not promise that every other form of device or service information stops at the same time. It also does not describe a universal confirmation screen, retention period, deletion process, or model-specific behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For that reason, treat the setting as a narrowly scoped privacy choice. It is appropriate for antenna-viewing information, but it should not be presented as a request to erase historical account data or as a way to disable all recommendations, advertising, diagnostics, or app-level processing.

Amazon summarizes the path this way in its Privacy Settings FAQs: “On smart TVs with Fire TV, you may opt out of providing information to Amazon on your use of over-the-air TV content received through an antenna connected directly to your TV via Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings.”

Checking that you changed the intended setting

Fire TV does not provide a universal confirmation screen described in Amazon’s FAQ. You can still verify the change by reopening the same Privacy Settings page and checking the control’s current state.

  • Make sure you are on the television that has the antenna connected directly to it.
  • Reopen Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings after saving the choice.
  • Confirm that you changed the over-the-air viewing control, not only Device Usage Data or Interest-based Ads.
  • If you used amazon.com/mycd, verify that the account page identified the intended television; account settings are device-specific.
  • Do not infer from a change in advertising or recommendations that every category of data collection has stopped.

What Amazon’s broader device terms mean for this question

Amazon’s Device Terms of Use, last updated October 8, 2026, say that device software can provide Amazon information about use of an Amazon Device and interaction with digital content and services. The examples listed include content usage, viewing data, search queries, location, voice information, connectivity, and signal strength. The terms say that information Amazon receives is handled under its Privacy Notice.

That broad statement provides context about possible device and service information, but it is not a model-specific description of the over-the-air toggle. It should not be presented as proof that turning off one Privacy Settings control disables every category named in the terms.

Why the controls are separated

The categories describe different sources and uses of information:

  • Over-the-air Viewing Data comes from antenna television watched through the TV’s built-in Fire TV environment.
  • Device Usage Data comes from the operating system and can be used for functions beyond television viewing.
  • App Usage Data records activity inside third-party applications.
  • Interest-based Ads uses an advertising identifier made available to apps on certain Amazon devices.
  • Service-specific data is governed by the settings and notices for the Amazon or third-party service involved.

Because the sources differ, one opt-out cannot accurately be described as stopping all Fire TV data collection. Use the narrow control that matches the activity you want to limit.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming “Viewing Data” means all viewing: Amazon’s documented category is limited to over-the-air content received through an antenna directly connected to a smart TV with Fire TV.
  • Using Device Usage Data as a universal privacy switch: Amazon lists device features, other advertising data, and Amazon-service data that remain outside that opt-out.
  • Applying streaming-device instructions to a smart TV: Amazon documents the over-the-air control for smart TVs with Fire TV, not every Fire TV product.
  • Expecting one account change to cover every television: Amazon says settings are device-specific.
  • Guessing a hidden submenu: The official FAQ does not provide a deeper path or model-specific instructions. Check the support information for the exact television instead.

What to do if the setting keeps returning

If the option appears enabled again after you changed it, first confirm that you are looking at the same television and account. Reopen the on-device Privacy Settings page, then check the account-based page if your model offers it. Because Amazon does not publish a universal model and software matrix for this control, persistent differences should be handled through the television manufacturer’s current support information or Amazon’s device support channel rather than by applying instructions for an unrelated model.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn off Viewing Data on an Amazon Fire TV?

On a supported Fire TV smart television, go to Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings, find the Over-the-air Viewing Data control, and opt out. The exact label can vary, and Amazon does not document a deeper submenu for every model.

Where are Fire TV privacy settings?

From the television’s home screen, open Settings, select Preferences, and choose Privacy Settings. Device Usage Data, Collect App Usage Data, Interest-based Ads, and the over-the-air viewing control are separate entries or choices within that area.

Does this stop Fire TV collecting everything I watch?

No. The documented setting concerns over-the-air television received through an antenna connected directly to a smart TV with Fire TV. It does not establish an opt-out for streaming apps, searches, Prime Video activity, or every other category of device information.

Does turning off Device Usage Data stop Prime Video data collection?

No. Amazon says the Device Usage Data opt-out does not cover data related to use of Amazon services such as Prime Video. Review the relevant service or app privacy settings for service-specific choices.

Why is there no Viewing Data option on my Fire TV Stick?

Amazon documents this particular control for smart TVs with Fire TV and does not state that every separate Fire TV streaming device includes it. Confirm the product type, review its Privacy Settings page, and consult the device-specific support information rather than assuming the smart-TV menu applies.

Can I manage the setting online?

Certain smart TVs with Fire TV support account management at amazon.com/mycd under Privacy Settings > Amazon Devices Privacy. Availability is model-specific, and Amazon says these settings are device-specific.

What if the label is different?

Amazon does not provide one universal toggle label. Read the description and choose the option referring to information about over-the-air television received through an antenna directly connected to the TV. If no comparable description appears, check the model’s current support information.

Will changing one privacy switch change the others?

No. Over-the-air Viewing Data, Device Usage Data, Collect App Usage Data, and Interest-based Ads address different categories. Change each relevant control separately, and use the service provider’s own settings for app-specific activity.

Amazon says turning off Device Usage Data does not cover data related to use of Amazon services such as Prime Video.

Why can’t I find the viewing-data setting?

The Bottom Line

Do not confuse that choice with Device Usage Data, third-party App Usage Data, Interest-based Ads, or Prime Video privacy controls.
