In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Notifications, expand Additional settings, and switch off Get tips and suggestions when using Windows. To remove post-update welcome messages, also disable Show the Windows welcome experience after updates and when signed in to show what’s new and suggested.
Those switches do not cover every recommendation. Settings-app suggestion cards, personalized offers, device-usage recommendations, and ordinary app alerts use separate controls. The sections below show which switch affects each surface, how to disable it, and how Windows 10 differs.

Which Windows suggestions are you trying to remove?
Windows uses several independent systems to show advice, promotional recommendations, and alerts. Turning off one checkbox can therefore leave other messages visible. Use this map before changing settings:
| Message or surface | Control to change | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Tips that appear while you work in Windows | Get tips and suggestions when using Windows | Windows tips and suggestion notifications |
| “What’s new” or welcome screens after updates or sign-in | Show the Windows welcome experience after updates and when signed in to show what’s new and suggested | Welcome-experience pages, not every notification |
| Suggestion cards inside the Settings app | Show me suggested content in the Settings app | Recommendations displayed throughout Settings |
| Personalized tips, ads, and product recommendations | Get personalized tips, ads, and recommendations based on my Windows activity | Personalized offers for Microsoft and third-party products, services, features, apps, or hardware |
| Recommendations based on how you use the device | Categories under Device usage | Tailored tips, suggested apps or services, and related notifications |
| Every notification, regardless of source | The main Notifications switch | All notification banners and notification-center items |
| Alerts from one troublesome application | That app’s entry under Notifications from apps and other senders | Only the selected app |
For most people who want fewer interruptions without losing security or calendar alerts, disable the first two notification settings and then remove Settings suggestions and personalized offers. Use the all-notifications switch only when you genuinely want Windows to stay silent.

Turn off tips and suggestions notifications in Windows 11
Disable ordinary tips
- Open Start, then select Settings. You can also press Windows + I.
- Select System in the left sidebar and open Notifications.
- Scroll down and expand Additional settings.
- Clear Get tips and suggestions when using Windows.
This is the specific Windows control for helpful tips and suggestions that appear while you use the operating system. It does not disable notifications generated by installed applications, nor does it remove every recommendation shown in Settings.
Stop update and sign-in welcome messages
Remain in Settings > System > Notifications > Additional settings and turn off Show the Windows welcome experience after updates and when signed in to show what’s new and suggested. This prevents the welcome-style presentation that can appear after a feature update or when Windows signs you in to display new and suggested features.
The two switches have different jobs: the first suppresses tips during normal use, while the second suppresses the post-update or post-sign-in welcome experience. Disable both if you do not want either type of message.
Remove suggested content from the Settings app
Settings recommendations are controlled separately from notification banners. On current Windows 11 builds, use this route:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open Recommendations & offers.
- Turn off Show me suggested content in the Settings app.
After changing the setting, close and reopen Settings if a suggestion card remains on screen. The control covers suggested content shown throughout the Settings application; it does not turn off ordinary alerts from other programs.
If your Windows 11 build shows the older privacy page
Microsoft’s general privacy guidance also documents the equivalent switch under Start > Settings > Privacy & security > General. Look for Show me suggested content in the Settings app and switch it off there. The label may be located in Recommendations & offers on newer Windows 11 releases, so search Settings for “suggested content” if the first route is different on your build.
Reduce personalized tips, ads, and recommendations
Windows can tailor recommendations using activity associated with the device. If you want to reduce personalized promotions in addition to ordinary tips, change the personalized-offers setting:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to Privacy & security.
- Select Personalized offers.
- Turn off Get personalized tips, ads, and recommendations based on my Windows activity.
Microsoft describes personalized offers as potentially including tips, ads, and recommendations for its own and third-party products, services, features, apps, and hardware. Disabling the switch limits this personalization; it is not the same as blocking every notification from every application.
What this setting does not change
- It does not uninstall suggested or preinstalled applications.
- It does not disable security warnings, update failures, or other system-critical messages.
- It does not replace the separate Settings-app suggestion control.
- It does not silence mail, messaging, backup, or other app notifications.
Review Device usage personalization
Windows 11 can ask how you intend to use a device, such as for gaming, creativity, family use, school, or business. Selected categories can influence tailored tips, recommendations, suggested apps or services, and related notifications.
Rank #2
- Instantly productive. Simpler, more intuitive UI and effortless navigation. New features like snap layouts help you manage multiple tasks with ease.
- Smarter collaboration. Have effective online meetings. Share content and mute/unmute right from the taskbar (1) Stay focused with intelligent noise cancelling and background blur.(2)
- Reassuringly consistent. Have confidence that your applications will work. Familiar deployment and update tools. Accelerate adoption with expanded deployment policies.
- Powerful security. Safeguard data and access anywhere with hardware-based isolation, encryption, and malware protection built in.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Personalization.
- Open Device usage.
- Review the categories that are enabled.
- Switch off any category you do not want used for personalization. If you want the fewest tailored recommendations, clear every category that Windows allows you to clear.
Changing these categories affects personalization rather than the global notification channel. A device can therefore continue showing ordinary app alerts even after all device-usage categories are disabled.
Turn off every notification, or only selected apps
Complete notification shutdown
If your goal is a completely quiet desktop, open Start > Settings > System > Notifications and turn off the main Notifications switch. Windows will stop notification banners and notification-center alerts from the system and installed applications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThis is a broad change. It can hide reminders, incoming-message alerts, backup warnings, meeting notices, and other information you may still need. Before using it permanently, consider the per-app method below or schedule quiet periods instead.
Block only one app
- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Scroll to Notifications from apps and other senders.
- Find the application that is interrupting you.
- Turn its notification switch off, or open the app’s entry to adjust banners, notification-center visibility, sounds, and priority individually.
This approach preserves Windows tips and alerts from other sources while stopping the selected sender. It is usually the safest option when one application is responsible for most interruptions.
Windows 10 paths and the support-date caveat
Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft’s stated support period on October 14, 2025. Existing installations may still expose the controls, but labels and page locations differ from Windows 11.
Windows 10 notification settings
Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications & actions. Look for the Windows tips and suggestions options in that page and disable the tip or welcome-experience checkboxes that are present on your edition. Windows 10 does not always present the same Additional settings layout used by current Windows 11 releases.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Windows 10 Settings suggestions
For the privacy control, use Start > Settings > Privacy > General rather than Privacy & security. Turn off Show me suggested content in the Settings app. On some Windows 10 versions, wording or grouping can vary, so use the Settings search box for “suggested content” when necessary.
Why Windows 10 instructions may not match a screenshot
Windows 11 renamed the privacy area to Privacy & security and moved notification management to System > Notifications. Windows 10 commonly uses Privacy > General and System > Notifications & actions. The underlying privacy intent is similar, but a guide written for one version can show a different page name or checkbox position.
How to verify that the changes worked
Windows settings take effect immediately, but a message that was already generated can remain visible until it is dismissed. Use this check after changing the switches:
Rank #3
- Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
- Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
- Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
- Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
- Close any open Settings windows and reopen Settings.
- Confirm that the tips switch and, if required, the welcome-experience switch remain off.
- Open the privacy page and verify that suggested Settings content is off.
- Check Personalized offers and Device usage if recommendations continue.
- Dismiss existing notifications from the notification center.
- Restart Windows if a previously displayed welcome panel continues to reappear. A restart is not normally required, but it clears stale notification UI.
If only one application continues to send alerts, the remaining message is probably an app notification rather than a Windows tip. Disable that sender under Notifications from apps and other senders instead of changing global privacy controls.

The Settings card remains visible
Check both possible locations for Show me suggested content in the Settings app: Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers and Privacy & security > General. Different Windows 11 releases can place the same control in different subsections. After switching it off, close Settings completely and launch it again.
A welcome message appears after an update
Verify the separate welcome-experience checkbox under System > Notifications > Additional settings. Turning off ordinary tips alone does not suppress the post-update “what’s new” experience.
Recommendations return after changing device usage
Device-usage categories and personalized offers are independent. Clear unwanted categories under Personalization > Device usage, then disable the activity-based personalized-offers switch. Leaving either system enabled can allow tailored recommendations to continue.
Important alerts disappeared
If you used the main Notifications switch, turn it back on and disable only the individual senders that are distracting. Global suppression also affects useful reminders and warnings, whereas per-app controls let you retain them.

There is no matching option
Edition, build, and version affect which labels are displayed. Install available Windows updates, then search Settings for “tips,” “suggestions,” “recommended,” or “notifications.” On Windows 10, expect the older page names described above. A managed work or school computer may also restrict settings through organizational policy; in that case, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly changing the local switch.
Choose the narrowest control that solves the problem
| Your objective | Recommended change | What remains enabled |
|---|---|---|
| Stop occasional Windows advice | Turn off Get tips and suggestions when using Windows | App alerts, Settings cards, and personalized offers |
| Stop “what’s new” screens | Turn off the welcome-experience option | Normal notifications and other recommendation systems |
| Remove cards inside Settings | Turn off Show me suggested content in the Settings app | Tips outside Settings and app notifications |
| Reduce tailored promotions | Turn off personalized offers and review device-usage categories | Non-personalized system and app alerts |
| Silence one application | Disable that app under Notifications from apps and other senders | Windows and other applications’ notifications |
| Make the computer completely quiet | Turn off the main Notifications switch | Nothing delivered through Windows notifications until re-enabled |
Using the narrowest setting avoids sacrificing information you still need. Disabling unnecessary app notifications can also reduce interruptions and may provide a small performance benefit by reducing background notification activity, although it does not replace broader Windows performance tuning.
What to expect after disabling tips
- Windows will no longer proactively show the categories of tips controlled by the switches you changed.
- You can still open Settings, Windows Help, or an application’s own help resources whenever you need guidance.
- Turning off personalized recommendations changes how offers are selected; it does not remove core Windows features.
- Notification settings are reversible. Return to the same page and re-enable a switch if you later want the messages back.
- Critical system, security, or account messages may use channels that are not governed by the ordinary tips checkbox.
The Bottom Line
For Windows 11, start with System > Notifications > Additional settings and disable both tips and the welcome experience. Then turn off Settings-app suggestions under Privacy & security, review personalized offers and device usage, and use per-app notification controls before resorting to the global Notifications switch.
