Where is the water shutoff valve for a Samsung refrigerator?
The shutoff is part of the refrigerator’s household plumbing, not a universal setting on the refrigerator’s screen. Samsung’s US water-line installation guidance describes a valve connected to the cold-water line, with a supply line running from the valve to the refrigerator.

Depending on the installation, the valve may be behind or beside the refrigerator, or accessible from plumbing elsewhere in the home, such as near the sink. - Locate the refrigerator’s water line and its shutoff valve. If practical, move the refrigerator just enough to see the connection. Avoid pulling hard on the tubing.
- Close the identified valve using its handle. Valve designs differ, so there is no single turn direction or number of turns that applies to every installation. Do not twist or disconnect the refrigerator’s tubing as a substitute for closing the valve.
- Stop if the valve is unclear, stuck, or damaged. Contact the installer or a plumber rather than forcing it.
Do I need to shut off the water before changing the filter?
Yes. Shut off the refrigerator’s water supply before removing the filter, then dispense water until the flow stops. Samsung Canada recommends this step to relieve pressure and make the filter easier to remove. Filter position varies by model; consult the Samsung Canada filter guide or your model’s manual if you are unsure where it is.

You do not need to buy a replacement filter just to turn off the refrigerator’s water. If you are replacing one, confirm the refrigerator model or the existing filter before choosing a part. Samsung’s US filter guidance identifies HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 as filter types, but the correct one depends on the refrigerator.
After installing a filter
Turn the supply back on and follow the instructions for your exact refrigerator and filter. Samsung US advises dispensing several gallons after installation to clear air or impurities; the amount and procedure vary by model. Check the connections for leaks.

What should I do if the refrigerator water line is leaking?
If water is leaking at a connection, shut off the home’s main water supply. Samsung’s Australia leak guidance also advises turning off the main supply when water drops or a leak appear at connection areas. Dry the area, avoid disconnecting tubing that may still be pressurized, and contact the installer if the leak continues or you cannot safely operate the valve.
When would I need a water-line installation kit?
A kit with a shutoff valve is relevant when installing or replacing plumbing components—not simply because you want to turn off the water. Samsung’s US installation guidance describes a common setup with 1/4-inch copper tubing, a 1/4-inch compression nut, and a ferrule, while noting that installation depends on the equipment. Match fittings to the existing plumbing and local requirements; ask a plumber if you are uncertain whether a kit or a particular fitting is suitable.
