To stop Siri on an Apple TV, open Settings > General > Siri, then switch Siri off. Apple documents this route for Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K.
That switch controls Siri availability. It does not automatically delete previously associated Siri or dictation history, change microphone permissions for other apps, or disable VoiceOver. Those functions have separate settings, explained below.

How do I turn off Siri listening on Apple TV?
Use the Apple TV itself; no subscription, accessory or purchase is required. The setting is available on supported Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K models.

Apple’s current support instructions describe the final step as selecting Siri and turning the feature on or off. Once Siri is off, holding the Siri button on the remote should no longer start Siri on that Apple TV. Menu names can vary slightly with tvOS version, language and region, but the control is located under Settings > General.

Before you start: what you need
You need only a working Apple TV remote and access to the Home Screen. There is no paid service, download or extra microphone accessory involved. If the remote is not responding, use the Apple TV Remote feature on a compatible iPhone or iPad, if available, or reconnect the physical remote before opening Settings.
The documented path applies to Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. Siri availability still depends on supported language, country or region and the Apple Account billing region. Older tvOS versions can use slightly different wording, so look under Settings > General if the labels do not exactly match these instructions.
What the main Siri switch changes
The Siri switch is the direct control for whether the Apple TV offers Siri. It is a device setting, so it addresses the question “How do I disable Siri on Apple TV?” It is not a universal audio switch for every feature that can use a microphone.
Turning Siri off does not, by itself, perform these other actions:
- It does not delete Siri and dictation history already associated with an Apple TV 4K.
- It does not change the optional setting that permits Apple to store and review audio for improving Siri and dictation.
- It does not revoke microphone access from every third-party app.
- It does not turn off VoiceOver, which can speak interface labels independently of Siri.
Choose the additional control that matches your privacy concern rather than assuming the main toggle changes all audio-related settings.
Match your goal to the correct Apple TV setting
| What you want to do | Control to use | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Stop Siri from being available | Settings > General > Siri | Turns Siri on or off for the Apple TV. |
| Remove Siri and dictation history associated with an Apple TV 4K | Settings > General > Siri > Siri & Dictation History | Apple says this deletes all associated history from Apple servers. |
| Control optional storage and review of interaction audio for improvement | Settings > General > Privacy & Security > Analytics and Improvements > Improve Siri & Dictation | Apple describes enabling this as allowing storage and review of Siri and dictation audio from that Apple TV 4K. |
| Stop a particular app from using the microphone | Settings > General > Privacy & Security > Microphone | Lets you choose which installed apps have microphone access on Apple TV 4K. |
| Stop spoken names of icons and settings | Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver | Turns off the screen-reading feature; VoiceOver is separate from Siri. |
Delete Siri and dictation history on Apple TV 4K
If your concern is what may already be retained rather than whether Siri can be used in the future, delete the history separately. On an Apple TV 4K:
- Open Settings from the Home Screen.
- Choose General.
- Open Siri.
- Select Siri & Dictation History.
- Use the delete option and confirm when prompted.
Apple’s Apple TV 4K guide says this action deletes the Siri and dictation history associated with that Apple TV from Apple servers. It is a separate action from switching Siri off. If you want both outcomes, first turn Siri off and then run the history-deletion action.
This menu is documented for Apple TV 4K. If it is not shown on an Apple TV HD or on an older tvOS layout, do not infer that the main Siri switch has silently deleted history; the feature’s availability depends on hardware, software, language and region.
Limit optional use of Siri and dictation audio for improvement
Apple TV 4K includes an Improve Siri & Dictation control under privacy settings. Apple describes the enabled state as permitting Apple to store and review audio of Siri and dictation interactions from that device for improvement. This setting concerns optional sharing and review; it is not the on/off switch for Siri itself.
- Open Settings.
- Select General.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Open Analytics and Improvements.
- Review Improve Siri & Dictation and turn it off if you do not want to allow that optional audio-sharing setting.
The privacy guide places this control in Analytics and Improvements, while the history-deletion action is inside the Siri menu. Changing one does not automatically change the other, so check both when your goal includes limiting future improvement data and removing existing history.
Stop Apple TV apps from using the microphone
If you mean “How do I stop Apple TV from using the microphone?” in relation to a specific app, manage app permissions instead of relying only on the Siri toggle. On Apple TV 4K, go to Settings > General > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
The Microphone screen lists apps that have requested access and lets you select which ones may use it. Review each entry and disable access for an app that does not need voice input. This permission applies to the selected app; it is distinct from whether Siri is available through the system.

Apple documents this microphone-permission screen for Apple TV 4K. The exact list depends on which apps are installed and which ones have requested access. A missing app in the list generally means it has not requested microphone access, rather than proving that every audio feature is disabled.
What happens when you press the Siri button on the remote?
The Siri Remote’s dedicated Siri button is the documented way to initiate a Siri request. You press and hold it while speaking, then release it. Apple’s security documentation says a Siri-capable third-party remote sends audio data to Apple TV when the user explicitly activates the remote microphone with its dedicated Siri button.
“A Siri-capable TV remote sends audio data to Apple TV when the user explicitly activates the microphone on the remote using a dedicated Siri button.”

This describes explicit activation through the button; it is not a claim that every microphone pathway on the television is governed by that button. Turning Siri off removes the Siri function from Apple TV, while app permissions and accessibility settings remain separate.
You do not need to buy a different remote to disable Siri. The remote button is an input method for starting a Siri request, not a replacement for the tvOS Siri switch. Remote naming can differ by market, and Siri-capable remote features vary by region.
If Apple TV still speaks after Siri is off
A television that reads icon names, menu items or settings aloud may have VoiceOver enabled. Apple identifies VoiceOver as an accessibility feature, not a Siri feature.
- Open Settings.
- Select Accessibility.
- Select VoiceOver.
- Turn VoiceOver off.
VoiceOver can remain active when Siri is disabled because it has its own switch and purpose. If spoken feedback stops after changing VoiceOver, Siri was not the cause of the narration.
When the Siri menu or switch is missing
Siri availability is conditional. Apple says it depends on a supported language, country or region and the Apple Account billing region. Apple’s support article consulted for this guide lists Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K (first generation and later) as supported hardware, but individual commands and features still vary by language and region.
Work through these checks:
- Confirm the path: Start at the Home Screen and open Settings > General. Do not look only under Accessibility or Privacy & Security for the primary Siri switch.
- Check language and region: An unsupported Siri language or regional configuration can remove Siri or limit its commands.
- Check the Apple Account billing region: Apple lists this as a factor in Siri availability.
- Identify the Apple TV model: The documented support covers Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K, but nested privacy options are not identical on every model.
- Account for tvOS differences: Older software may use different wording or place a control differently. Look under General for Siri and privacy options rather than expecting every label to match a newer guide.
Not all Apple TV features and content are available in every region or on every hardware generation. A missing history or microphone option can therefore reflect model or regional availability, not a failed setting change.
How to verify that Siri is disabled
After switching Siri off, use a simple verification sequence:
- Return to Settings > General > Siri and confirm the switch remains off.
- Press and hold the Siri button briefly. Siri should not open or accept a request while the feature is disabled.
- If the Apple TV still speaks interface text, check Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver.
- If your concern is a particular app, inspect Settings > General > Privacy & Security > Microphone on Apple TV 4K and review that app’s permission.
- If you also wanted to remove retained interactions, open the Apple TV 4K Siri settings and use Siri & Dictation History separately.
These checks test different controls: Siri availability, accessibility narration, app microphone permission and server-associated history. A successful result in one area does not establish the state of the others.

- Looking for Siri under Accessibility: Siri is under General. Accessibility contains VoiceOver and other assistive features.
- Assuming history is erased: Switching Siri off does not perform the separate history-deletion action documented for Apple TV 4K.
- Confusing analytics with availability: Improve Siri & Dictation controls optional storage and review for improvement; it does not turn Siri on or off.
- Expecting one privacy switch to cover every app: Apps with their own voice features are managed on the Microphone page when they request access.
- Testing only by listening for speech: VoiceOver can speak even when Siri is disabled, so verify the VoiceOver setting separately.
- Assuming every model has identical menus: Apple TV HD, different Apple TV 4K generations and tvOS versions may not show the same nested options.
Frequently overlooked distinctions
Turning Siri off versus deleting history
The off switch changes future Siri availability. History deletion addresses previously associated Siri and dictation records on Apple TV 4K. They are separate actions and should be treated as such.

Turning Siri off versus limiting improvement audio
Improve Siri & Dictation is an optional privacy setting under Analytics and Improvements. Its description concerns Apple’s storage and review of interaction audio for improvement, not whether the Siri interface can be invoked.
Turning Siri off versus revoking app microphone access
The Microphone page controls app permissions. An app that records or processes voice input through its own feature is governed by that permission, not solely by the system Siri switch.
Turning Siri off versus disabling VoiceOver
VoiceOver reads interface elements for accessibility. Its narration can continue independently until the VoiceOver switch is turned off.
Which Apple TV models and versions are covered?
Apple’s support instructions give the main Siri path for Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. The Apple TV 4K user guides add controls for Siri and Dictation History, optional Siri and dictation improvement audio, and per-app microphone access. Apple cautions that feature availability and menu labels can differ by hardware, tvOS version, language and region.
For that reason, use the exact labels visible on your television. If a guide names a control that you cannot find, first verify the model and software version, then inspect the related parent menu under Settings > General. Do not assume that a control documented for Apple TV 4K exists on every Apple TV HD configuration.
What changed in Apple’s guidance?
Apple Support’s current “Use Siri on your Apple TV” instructions, published January 15, 2026, summarize the main action as selecting Siri and turning the feature on or off. The Apple TV 4K user guide separately documents history deletion and privacy controls, so the concise support path should not be read as a promise that one toggle handles every type of audio data.
Apple’s security documentation, published February 18, 2021, describes explicit microphone activation from a Siri-capable third-party remote. That wording helps explain why pressing and holding the dedicated button is different from passive, continuous listening. It still does not replace the tvOS settings for Siri, app permissions or VoiceOver.

What does Improve Siri & Dictation do?
Under Settings > General > Privacy & Security > Analytics and Improvements, this optional control concerns allowing Apple to store and review Siri and dictation interaction audio for improvement. It does not determine whether Siri is available.
Why can’t I find Siri in Settings?
Check the model, tvOS version, language, country or region and Apple Account billing region. Siri availability and menu labels vary, and Apple’s documented support covers Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K.
Will turning off Siri stop every microphone on the television?
No. It stops the Apple TV’s Siri function. Review the separate Microphone permissions for apps on Apple TV 4K, and remember that VoiceOver is an accessibility feature rather than a microphone feature.
