macOS separates three privacy actions that are often confused: disabling the voice trigger while keeping Siri available, switching Siri off entirely, and deleting data already associated with Siri and Dictation. A fourth control governs whether future audio recordings may be shared to improve those features. Use the section that matches your goal; completing one action does not automatically complete the others.
Choose the control that matches your goal
Before changing anything, identify whether you want to stop the wake phrase, remove Siri as a feature, erase existing history, or prevent future audio sharing. Apple places these controls in different parts of System Settings.

The names can differ by macOS release, language, region, and whether Apple Intelligence features are available. If you see Apple Intelligence & Siri instead of Siri, use that panel; the relevant controls are in the same general locations.

This is the least disruptive option. Siri remains available through a menu-bar or app icon and a keyboard shortcut, but the Mac no longer waits for the spoken activation phrase selected in Siri settings.

- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Siri. On some releases, select Apple Intelligence & Siri instead.
- Open the Requests section.
- Change the activation method from “Hey Siri” or “Siri” to a click-based or keyboard-based option. The exact wording depends on the macOS version.
- Close System Settings. Test by invoking Siri with the displayed icon or keyboard shortcut rather than speaking the wake phrase.
Changing Requests affects voice-triggered activation, not every use of the microphone on the Mac. Other applications can still request microphone access according to their own permissions. If your aim is to prevent Siri from being used at all, use the complete shutoff procedure instead.
Turn Siri off completely
Use this option when you do not want Siri available through voice, the icon, or a keyboard shortcut.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Choose Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Click Turn Off Siri.
- Confirm the prompt.
On some newer releases, disabling Apple Intelligence features can leave an option for Siri Classic. That choice is a version-specific fallback, not a request to erase history. If you select it, review the resulting Siri settings separately and decide whether you also want to disable voice activation or delete stored history.

Delete Siri and Dictation history
Deleting history removes the Siri and Dictation material covered by Apple’s deletion control. Apple says the request covers audio recordings and transcripts linked to a random identifier and less than six months old. The Mac must be connected to the internet while you submit the deletion.

- Connect the Mac to the internet.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Apple Intelligence & Siri or Siri.
- Choose Delete Siri & Dictation History.
- Click Delete to confirm.
The random identifier described by Apple is not your Apple Account name. It is the identifier associated with the records covered by the deletion request. The documented age limit matters: this control should not be read as a promise that records of every age or every kind are removed.
Deletion is a one-time action. It does not create an ongoing rule that prevents new records from being generated or shared later. If you continue using Siri or Dictation, apply the sharing preference in the next section when you want to change that future choice.

Stop future audio sharing with “Improve Siri & Dictation”
Apple treats the consent to share audio recordings for improving Siri and Dictation separately from the history-deletion command. Apple Support explicitly states that deleting Siri and Dictation history does not change the choice made about sharing audio recordings.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Open Analytics & Improvements.
- Turn Improve Siri & Dictation off.
This changes the future sharing preference. It does not retroactively perform the Delete Siri & Dictation History action, so use both controls when you want to address existing history and future sharing independently.
Remove Siri AI conversations and set their retention
Macs with Siri AI features can show a separate conversation history in the Siri app. This in-app list is distinct from the Siri and Dictation history command in System Settings.

Delete a conversation in the Siri app
- Open the Siri app.
- Select the individual conversation you want to remove, or select the interface option for choosing multiple conversations.
- Delete the selected conversation or conversations and confirm if prompted.
The available selection controls can vary between macOS releases. Removing a visible conversation in the app is the direct way to clear that item from the app’s history.

Set automatic conversation retention
- Open System Settings.
- Select Siri.
- Open Keep Conversations.
- Choose the retention period offered by your release. Apple documents options such as 30 days or one year.
After the selected period, older conversations are permanently deleted according to Apple’s description of the setting. A retention choice governs future cleanup; it is not the same operation as manually deleting Siri and Dictation history.
How the controls work together
The following combinations cover the most common privacy goals.
“I only want the Mac to stop reacting to my voice”
Change Requests to click or keyboard activation. Siri remains usable on demand, but the spoken trigger is disabled. No history deletion is implied.
“I never use Siri and want it unavailable”
Choose Turn Off Siri and confirm. If you also want to remove existing records or stop improvement sharing, complete those separate procedures.

“I want existing records removed and no future improvement sharing”
Run Delete Siri & Dictation History while online, then turn off Improve Siri & Dictation. The order is not presented as significant by Apple; completing both is what addresses the two different settings.
“I use Siri AI but want a shorter conversation history”
Use Keep Conversations and choose the available period, then manually delete conversations that should disappear immediately. This manages the Siri app’s conversation list and does not replace the System Settings deletion command.

Use a simple check after each procedure instead of assuming that one setting changed all of them.
- Voice trigger: With Requests set to click or keyboard activation, saying “Hey Siri” or “Siri” should no longer activate Siri. Invoke Siri with the displayed icon or shortcut to confirm that the assistant itself remains available.
- Complete shutoff: After Turn Off Siri, Siri should not open through its normal icon or shortcut. If a release offers Siri Classic after disabling Siri AI, check which mode is now enabled.
- History deletion: Reopen the Siri settings panel and look for the Delete Siri & Dictation History control. The deletion request requires an internet connection; do not treat an unavailable network as proof that the request completed.
- Sharing preference: Return to Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements and confirm that Improve Siri & Dictation is off.
- Siri AI conversations: Open the Siri app and confirm that manually deleted items no longer appear. Check Keep Conversations to verify the selected retention period.
Troubleshooting when a setting is missing or behaves differently
The panel says Apple Intelligence & Siri
That is a current-label variation. Open it and look for Requests, Turn Off Siri, and Delete Siri & Dictation History. Apple can change labels as Siri AI features are introduced, so the panel name alone does not indicate a problem.
You cannot find “Hey Siri”
Open the Requests section rather than looking only for a master listening switch. The control may present “Siri” instead of “Hey Siri,” or it may offer click and keyboard activation choices without using the phrase “listening.”
Turn Off Siri is not where an older guide says it is
Check both Siri and Apple Intelligence & Siri naming variants. Language, region, and macOS release affect labels. If Siri AI has been disabled, the release may show Siri Classic as an alternative.
Delete Siri & Dictation History does not appear
Make sure you are in the Siri settings panel, not Privacy & Security. If the Mac is offline, reconnect before attempting deletion. A managed Mac can also present organization-controlled settings; in that case, contact the administrator rather than changing unrelated analytics controls.
Deleting history did not turn off sharing
This is expected. History deletion and Improve Siri & Dictation are independent. Open Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements and change the latter preference directly.
A Siri AI conversation remains visible
Delete it from the Siri app. Then review Keep Conversations in System Settings > Siri. The app’s conversation list has its own controls, so deleting Siri and Dictation history is not a substitute for removing a visible AI conversation.
The wake phrase still works after changing Requests
Reopen Requests and confirm that the selected option is click or keyboard activation rather than “Hey Siri” or “Siri.” Test the phrase after closing and reopening Siri settings. If another Apple device responds, check that device separately; the Mac setting applies to the Mac on which it was changed.
Privacy boundaries to keep in mind
These settings address Siri and Dictation behavior on the Mac, not every source of audio or text data on the computer. Disabling the Siri wake phrase does not revoke microphone permission from other apps. Turning Siri off does not erase previously stored material. Deleting history does not alter the Improve Siri & Dictation choice. Siri AI conversation retention is managed separately in the Siri app and its Keep Conversations setting.
The most precise approach is therefore layered: select the activation setting that matches how you want to use Siri, delete the documented history when you want existing records removed, turn off improvement sharing when you do not want future audio recordings shared for that purpose, and manage visible Siri AI conversations independently. macOS may rename the panels, but these four functions remain distinct.
