How to Turn Off Samsung Galaxy Status Bar Notifications for One App

Samsung Galaxy does not document a switch that hides only one app’s status-bar icon while leaving all of that app’s other notifications untouched. On One UI 7, the status-bar icon control is global. For a single app, use its notification settings to disable all alerts or selected categories, or make a category silent and hide silent notifications if your Galaxy offers that Android option. Do not confuse a status-bar icon with a pop-up, lock-screen notification, or app-icon badge; each has separate controls.

What you can and cannot turn off

A notification icon in the status bar is only one presentation of a notification. Samsung’s current documented controls divide the problem into different scopes:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Goal Where to change it Scope What changes
Change how notification icons appear in the status bar Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Show notification icons Galaxy-wide Changes the display option for status-bar icons from apps generally
Stop one app’s notifications Settings > Notifications > App notifications > [app] One app Turning off Allow notifications blocks that app’s notifications
Limit only some alerts from an app That app’s notification categories Selected categories Changes the types of notifications delivered, with options depending on the app and Galaxy software
Remove icons for silent notifications Android’s general Hide silent notifications in status bar preference, when available All silent notifications Hides silent-notification icons broadly, not for one Samsung app only
Hide icons temporarily while using a quiet mode Do not disturb settings During Do not disturb Samsung documents Hide status bar icons as a broad Do not disturb control

Therefore, if your requirement is specifically “keep every notification from this app but remove only its status-bar icon,” Samsung’s documented One UI controls do not establish that per-app option. The closest approach depends on whether you are willing to silence, limit, or disable the app’s alerts.

Change the global status-bar icon display on One UI 7

One UI 7 places the documented status-bar control in the main Notifications settings. Samsung’s support wording is: “To control what appears in the status bar, navigate to and open Settings, then tap Notifications. Tap Advanced settings, tap Show notification icons, and then select your desired option.” This setting applies to the Galaxy, not a single app.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Open Advanced settings.
  4. Tap Show notification icons.
  5. Choose the overall display option that fits your preference.

Use this route when you want to reduce or change status-bar icons from many apps. It cannot be used to select one app while leaving all others unchanged. The exact choices shown can depend on the One UI release and device model.

Turn off every notification from one app

If the icon belongs to an app you no longer want to alert you, disable that app’s notifications. This removes the notification itself rather than merely hiding its icon, so the app will not deliver those alerts through the notification system.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Tap App notifications.
  4. Select the app.
  5. Turn off Allow notifications.

After this change, the app’s notification alerts are blocked. The app may still show information inside its own interface, and an app-icon badge or other in-app indicator can be governed separately. Re-enable Allow notifications if you want the app to notify you again.

Keep some alerts and disable others with notification categories

Many Android apps divide notifications into categories, such as messages, promotions, downloads, reminders, or background activity. Samsung’s per-app path lets you adjust categories when the app exposes them.

  1. Go to Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
  2. Tap the app whose alerts you want to change.
  3. Leave Allow notifications enabled.
  4. Open the available notification categories or notification-type controls.
  5. Turn off the unwanted category, or change its alert behavior where the available controls permit it.

This is the most selective built-in method, but it is category-based, not icon-based. Disabling a category prevents that type of notification; it does not preserve the notification while hiding only its status-bar symbol. Category names and available switches are supplied by the app and can differ between apps.

Make one app’s alerts silent, then hide silent icons broadly

Silencing is different from disabling. A silent notification can remain in the notification shade without making a sound or vibration, depending on the category’s controls. Android also documents a general Hide silent notifications in status bar preference on devices that provide it.

Set the app category to silent

  1. Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications > [app].
  2. Select the relevant notification category.
  3. Choose the available Silent behavior, or turn off sound and vibration for that category if that is how your model labels it.

Look for the general silent-icon preference

In Notifications settings, search for Hide silent notifications in status bar. If the option is present, enable it. Android warns that notification settings vary by device, so a Galaxy model or One UI version may not expose this exact switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This combination can remove status-bar icons for silent notifications, but it is not a per-app filter. Any other app notifications that are also silent may be affected. If the icon remains, the category may still be configured as alerting, or your software may not support the preference.

Hide status-bar icons temporarily with Do not disturb

Do not disturb is useful when you want a broad, temporary quiet period—for example, during a meeting or overnight. Samsung documents Hide status bar icons among Do not disturb’s notification-hiding controls.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications, then Do not disturb. On some versions, search Settings for Do not disturb.
  3. Open the mode’s notification-hiding or display options.
  4. Enable Hide status bar icons, if your Galaxy shows that control.
  5. Turn Do not disturb on manually or configure its schedule.

This affects the status bar while Do not disturb is active; it is not a permanent one-app setting. Do not disturb also has separate controls for allowed people, apps, alarms, and other interruptions. Configure those exceptions carefully if you still need urgent alerts.

Do not confuse these four notification indicators

Status-bar icon

This is the small symbol shown along the top edge of the screen when a notification is present. The One UI 7 Show notification icons control governs this display globally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Notification shade entry

Swiping down opens the notification shade, where notifications can remain even when a status-bar icon is not shown. Hiding an icon does not necessarily delete the underlying notification.

Pop-up notification

A pop-up or banner appears over the current screen. Samsung’s One UI 8 guidance documents per-app pop-up controls, but those controls govern the pop-up presentation rather than a status-bar-only switch.

Lock-screen notification

Lock-screen content visibility is another per-app or system notification setting. Changing what appears on the lock screen does not automatically remove the status-bar icon.

App-icon badge

A number or dot on the app’s launcher icon is a badge. Badge settings are separate from status-bar icon settings, so changing one may leave the other unchanged.

What to do when the menu is missing

Galaxy menu names and locations vary by model, carrier configuration, Android release, and One UI version. One UI 8 documentation describes per-app pop-up and lock-screen visibility controls but does not establish a per-app status-bar-only switch.

  • Open Settings and use its search field for Show notification icons.
  • Search for App notifications to jump to the per-app list.
  • Check Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings for the global icon control.
  • Open the app’s page and look for categories; some apps expose fewer categories than others.
  • Install the latest available system update for your model, then check the paths again if labels differ.

If a setting is absent, do not assume another menu with the same effect exists. Samsung’s documented controls are version-dependent, and the absence of a per-app icon-only switch is expected on some software versions.

Choose the right method

If you want to… Use this method Main trade-off
Change icons from all apps Show notification icons It is global and affects other apps
Stop one app completely Turn off Allow notifications You lose that app’s notification delivery
Stop only selected kinds of alerts Adjust notification categories Available categories depend on the app
Keep alerts quiet and possibly remove their icons Make a category silent, then use Hide silent notifications in status bar The silent-icon option is general and may not exist on every Galaxy
Hide icons during a scheduled or temporary quiet period Do not disturb with Hide status bar icons It applies during the mode, not permanently to one app

Troubleshooting common outcomes

The icon is still visible after disabling pop-ups

Pop-up visibility and status-bar visibility are separate. Return to the app’s notification categories or use the global status-bar setting. Turning off a pop-up does not prove that the status-bar icon has been disabled.

The app still appears in the notification shade

Hiding a status-bar icon does not necessarily remove the notification from the shade. To stop the notification itself, disable Allow notifications or the relevant category.

Only one type of alert keeps appearing

Open the app’s category list and identify the category generating that alert. Change that category rather than disabling the entire app, provided your Galaxy and the app expose category controls.

Silent notifications still show an icon

Confirm that the category is actually silent, then search Notifications settings for Hide silent notifications in status bar. The preference is device-dependent and may not be available or may use different wording.

The icon disappears only temporarily

Check whether Do not disturb is active. Its Hide status bar icons control works only while that mode is enabled. Turn the mode off to restore normal behavior, or use a per-app category change for a lasting adjustment.

A settings path differs from this article

Use Settings search for the exact labels Show notification icons and App notifications. Samsung changes menu placement between One UI releases and device models, while the underlying distinction between global icon controls and per-app notification controls remains important.

Recommended decision path

  1. Decide whether you need to hide an icon, silence an alert, or stop the notification entirely.
  2. If the change should affect every app, open Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Show notification icons.
  3. If it should affect one app, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications > [app].
  4. Turn off Allow notifications for a complete block, or edit a category for a narrower change.
  5. If you want quiet alerts, make the category silent and check for Hide silent notifications in status bar.
  6. For a temporary broad solution, use Do not disturb and enable Hide status bar icons.
  7. Verify the result in the status bar, notification shade, lock screen, and launcher badge separately, because each surface can follow a different setting.
