On Windows 10 and Windows 11, you turn off real-time protection in Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage settings, then switch Real-time protection to Off. It is a temporary pause: Microsoft says it turns itself back on automatically after a short while. On a Mac there is no equivalent single switch. Apple’s malware defenses are layered, and this guide explains what that means for you.
Turn off real-time protection on Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings.
- Switch Real-time protection to Off. Approve the User Account Control prompt if one appears.
- Do the one task you needed protection off for, such as installing a trusted program or opening a file that was being blocked.
- Return to the same page and switch Real-time protection back to On. Confirm that Virus & threat protection shows no warning.
Microsoft Support’s Windows Security guidance says: “However, real-time protection will soon turn on automatically again to protect your device.” Don’t count on that timing. Restore the setting yourself as soon as you finish.

What you lose while it is off
While the toggle is off, files you open or download are not scanned for threats in real time. Anything malicious you pick up in that window is not caught on arrival. Keep the gap short, avoid browsing or downloading anything else, and only do this for files you trust and obtained from the original source.
If the toggle won’t switch off
- Tamper protection: Microsoft says that when tamper protection is on, you may need to turn it off before real-time protection can be turned off. This is a limit built into the settings. Turn tamper protection back on when you are done.
- Work or school PC: Organization policy can lock security settings. Ask your IT administrator rather than trying to get around it.
- Third-party antivirus: Microsoft notes that a compatible third-party antivirus program can cause Defender Antivirus to turn itself off. If you run one, its own settings control protection, so use that product’s instructions.
Safer alternative: exclude one file or folder
If a single trusted file or folder keeps triggering a block, Microsoft’s documentation treats a specific exclusion as safer than disabling all antivirus protection. The trade-off is that excluded items are not checked by Defender real-time scanning. An exclusion also stays in place until you remove it, whereas the toggle resets itself. It is not risk-free.

| Approach | Scope | Exposure | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turn off real-time protection | All files | Broad, temporary gap | Turns back on automatically after a short while; you should restore it sooner |
| Add an exclusion | Named file or folder only | Persistent blind spot for that item | Remains until you remove it |
If you add an exclusion, keep it as narrow as possible (a single file rather than a drive), and remove it once the problem is solved.

Windows Security has one named toggle. macOS does not. Apple describes a set of overlapping malware defenses: Gatekeeper, notarization, and XProtect. Apple says its described XProtect checks apply on macOS 10.15 or later. Apple does not document XProtect as something you switch on and off, so any guide presenting it as a simple toggle should be treated with caution.

Apple’s documentation does say Gatekeeper can be turned off when necessary. The official material available does not give a current, supported end-user sequence for doing so, so this guide does not offer one. Commands from unofficial forums may not match your macOS version and weaken protection in ways Apple does not support.
Which Mac control do you actually mean?
| If you mean… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Apple’s built-in malware protections (Gatekeeper, notarization, XProtect) | No single supported on/off switch is documented. Look at Apple’s official guidance for your macOS version. |
| A third-party antivirus app you installed | Use that vendor’s official instructions. Each product has its own pause or disable setting. |
| The firewall | This is a separate network control. Apple places its settings in System Settings > Privacy & Security on macOS 13 or later, and System Preferences > Security & Privacy on macOS 12 or earlier. |
Changing the firewall does not turn off the malware defenses above, and turning those off does not affect the firewall.
