If the switch is missing, locked, or keeps turning back on, your organization’s Teams administrator controls it.
Find the correct Teams setting for your account
The location of the read-receipt switch depends on two things: whether you use Teams through an organization or for personal communication, and whether you are using a computer or a phone.

These are account-level settings. The control is not located in an individual message’s menu, and changing a chat’s notification options does not replace it.
Turn off read receipts for a work or school account on desktop or the web
Use these instructions in the Teams desktop application or in Teams running in a browser while signed in with your organization account.

- Open Microsoft Teams and look at the upper-right area of the window.
- Select Settings and more, the three-dot menu beside your profile picture.
- Select Settings.
- In the settings navigation, open Chats and channels.
- Find Read receipts and switch it off.
The change is made from the main Teams settings screen rather than from a specific conversation. If the switch changes to the off position and remains there, the user-controlled setting has been changed for that account on the client.
Turn off read receipts for a work or school account on mobile
The mobile app places the work-or-school control under General, not under the desktop label Chats and channels.
- Open the Teams mobile app.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap General.
- Switch Read receipts off.
If you use more than one Teams account in the mobile app, check that the account shown in the profile menu is the one whose messages you want to affect. Account switching can make the setting appear different because an organization may apply a different messaging policy to each account.

Turn off read receipts in Teams personal use
Personal Teams has a different settings category from work and school Teams. The relevant category is Chats on both computer and mobile.
Personal Teams on desktop
- Open Teams personal use.
- Select Settings and more.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Chats.
- Switch Read receipts off.
Personal Teams on mobile
- Open the Teams mobile app signed in to your personal account.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Chats.
- Switch Read receipts off.
Do not use the work-or-school mobile path of General for a personal account; personal Teams places the switch in Chats.
What happens when Teams records a message as read
A read receipt is associated with activity in the chat itself. Microsoft’s description says a message receives a read receipt when the recipient is active in the chat window. Merely seeing message text in other parts of Teams does not, by itself, create that receipt.

- Opening and being active in the chat window can produce the read status.
- Viewing a message in a notification does not generate the receipt.
- Viewing it in the Activity feed does not generate the receipt.
- Viewing it through a profile quick entry point does not generate the receipt.
- Viewing it in a banner notification does not generate the receipt.
This distinction matters if you want to preview a message without opening its conversation. A notification preview is not the same event as entering the chat window.
Which conversations support read receipts?
Teams documents read receipts for one-to-one chats and group chats containing 20 people or fewer. A Seen confirmation appears only when everyone involved has read receipts enabled. That means the absence of a Seen indicator does not identify one single cause: the conversation may be outside the documented group-size limit, or at least one participant may have read receipts disabled or unavailable.
- One-to-one chat: Read receipts are documented as supported.
- Group chat of 20 people or fewer: Read receipts are documented as supported when the participants’ settings allow them.
- Group chat of more than 20 people: It is outside the documented read-receipt scope.
- Mixed participant settings: A Seen confirmation requires read receipts to be enabled for everyone involved.
Read receipts are separate from delivery indicators, notification banners, and Activity-feed entries. Turning off a notification or hiding a preview is not the same operation as changing the read-receipt setting.
Why you cannot turn off read receipts
Microsoft states that read receipts are on by default and that an administrator decides both whether the feature is available and whether users can turn it off. Organizations apply this through Teams messaging policies.

The labels above are the corresponding PowerShell policy values documented by Microsoft. In the Teams interface, an enforced policy can appear as a missing or greyed-out control, or the switch can return to its previous position after you try to change it.

Symptoms of an administrator-controlled setting
- The Read receipts row is not present in the expected settings category.
- The switch is visible but disabled and cannot be selected.
- The switch moves briefly and then returns to on.
- The setting works for one account but not for another account managed by a different organization.
These symptoms point to policy control rather than a problem with an individual chat. A normal user cannot override an organization-wide Everyone policy from the Teams app.

- Confirm the account type. Check whether the profile belongs to a work or school tenant or to personal Teams. The correct category is Chats and channels for work or school desktop/web, General for work or school mobile, and Chats for personal Teams.
- Check the correct client. If you changed the option on a computer, open the same account on the mobile app, or vice versa, and verify which account and policy are active there. Do not assume that a personal account and a work account share settings.
- Reopen Settings. Close the settings pane, open it again through the profile menu, and revisit the documented path. This confirms whether the control is consistently unavailable rather than temporarily obscured.
- Look for policy behavior. A greyed-out switch, a missing row, or a switch that immediately reverts is consistent with administrator control.
- Contact your Teams or Microsoft 365 administrator. Ask whether the messaging policy is set to UserPreference, Everyone, or None, and whether your account is assigned a policy that permits personal changes.
Reinstalling the app or changing notification permissions will not give a user the ability to override a policy that the organization has enforced. The administrator must change the assigned messaging policy if users are expected to control the switch themselves.
How to confirm that the setting changed
Teams does not require a separate Save button for this switch in the documented paths. After selecting the off position, leave Settings and reopen the same account’s settings to check that the control remains off. Use the path that matches the account and client you changed:
- Work or school desktop/web: Settings and more → Settings → Chats and channels.
- Work or school mobile: profile picture → Settings → General.
- Personal desktop: Settings and more → Settings → Chats.
- Personal mobile: profile picture → Settings → Chats.
If the control is still off after reopening the page, the account accepted the user-level change. If it is unavailable or has returned to on, treat that as an account-policy issue and ask the organization administrator to confirm the assigned messaging policy.
Common misunderstandings about the Seen notification
“I read the notification, so why did the sender not see Seen?”
Notification, Activity-feed, profile quick-entry, and banner views do not generate a read receipt according to Microsoft’s documented behavior. The recipient must be active in the chat window for the receipt event to occur.
“The chat has several people. Why is there no Seen status?”
Read receipts are documented for groups of 20 people or fewer, and every participant must have read receipts enabled for a Seen confirmation. A larger group or a participant whose feature is disabled can therefore prevent the confirmation.
“I can see the setting, but it will not stay off.”
The organization may be enforcing the feature. In the documented policy model, Everyone forces read receipts on, while UserPreference permits an individual change and None turns the feature off for everyone. Ask the Teams or Microsoft 365 administrator which policy applies to your account.
