To stop Pandora immediately on a Samsung phone, tap Pause in Pandora or use the media controls in the notification shade or on the lock screen. If you also want to close the app, open Recent Apps and swipe the Pandora card away. Those actions are different from signing out, limiting background activity, or setting a timer, so choose the one that matches what you are trying to accomplish.
What “turn off Pandora” can mean
People use “turn off” for several different actions. Pausing stops the current stream but leaves Pandora ready to resume. Swiping the app away closes its current Recent Apps entry without uninstalling it. Signing out ends the account session. Samsung’s battery and background controls change what Pandora is allowed to do later, while the Sleep Timer ends playback after a selected interval.

Samsung notes that menu names and locations differ among Galaxy models and software versions. If a path below does not match your phone, search for Battery, Background usage limits, or Pandora in Settings, or open Pandora’s App info page.

Use Pandora’s own playback button
- Open Pandora and go to the Now Playing screen.
- Tap the Pause control.
- Confirm that the play control changes to indicate playback is paused.
This is the best choice when you only want the music to stop. Pandora says a paused Android app uses minimal data and battery, so you do not need to force a close merely to avoid continued streaming.

Pause from the notification shade
If Pandora is playing while another app is on screen, swipe down from the top of the display to open Samsung’s notification shade. Find Pandora’s media card and tap its pause control. The card may be lower in the shade or grouped with other notifications, depending on your One UI version. If no Pandora control appears, open Pandora directly and pause from Now Playing.
Pause from the lock screen
When lock-screen media controls are enabled and Pandora is the active player, wake the phone without unlocking it and tap the pause control. Lock-screen controls are not shown in every configuration; their absence does not mean Pandora cannot be paused from the app or notification shade.
Close Pandora from Recent Apps
To remove Pandora from the current app list, use Samsung’s Recent Apps view. Pandora’s Android instructions describe this as finding Pandora in Recent Apps and swiping its card up to completely close it.
- Open Recent Apps. With three-button navigation, tap the Recents button. With gesture navigation, swipe up from the bottom and hold briefly, then release when the app cards appear.
- Swipe left or right until you see the Pandora card.
- Swipe the Pandora card upward, off the screen.
- Return to the Home screen or open another app.
Closing the card is a temporary app close, not an uninstall. Pandora stays on the phone, and your account and downloaded app remain in place. Reopening Pandora starts a new app session. If your only objective was to stop the song, pausing is less disruptive; use Recent Apps when you also want to clear Pandora from the active app list.

Prevent Pandora from running in the background
Use battery or background restrictions when Pandora continues to behave in the background, restarts unexpectedly, or you want to limit what it can do when you are not using it. These settings are not a dependable first step for stopping a song that is playing right now.
Check Pandora’s per-app battery setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, select Pandora, and look for Battery. On some Galaxy versions, open Battery and device care first, then choose battery or background-use controls.
- Review the available choices, which may include Unrestricted, Optimized, and Restricted.
- Choose the setting that fits your goal, then leave Settings.
Samsung’s audio troubleshooting guidance explains that restricting a music app can prevent it from playing in the background. That can be useful if you want to limit background activity, but it can also stop legitimate listening when you switch away from Pandora. If background playback is important, do not select a restrictive mode simply because it sounds like a stronger version of Pause.
Review Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps
Some Galaxy phones place these controls under Settings > Battery and device care > Battery > Background usage limits. Samsung describes three relevant lists:

- Sleeping apps may have background activity reduced until you use them again.
- Deep sleeping apps are prevented from running in the background except when you open them.
- Never sleeping apps are excluded from those automatic sleep rules.
Move Pandora only if you understand the trade-off. Deep sleeping can prevent unwanted background activity, but it can also interfere with background playback and timely app behavior. Exact labels and locations vary by model, carrier software, region, and One UI release. Samsung’s Canada support documentation, updated March 8, 2024, and its other regional guidance describe the concepts but do not guarantee one universal menu path.

Use Settings search when the path is different
Tap the search icon in Settings and type Pandora, background usage, or sleeping apps. You can also press and hold the Pandora icon on the Home screen or app screen and tap App info, then inspect the battery section. This avoids guessing when your Galaxy uses a different menu structure.
Sign out when you need to end the session
Signing out is appropriate when another person will use the phone, you are switching accounts, or you want Pandora to require authentication before it is used again. It is not necessary for ordinary playback control.
- Open Pandora.
- Tap Profile.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sign out and confirm if prompted.
Signing out can require you to enter your credentials the next time you listen. It does not replace the Pause control when the immediate problem is simply that music is playing.
Schedule playback to stop with Sleep Timer
For bedtime or another planned listening session, Pandora’s Sleep Timer offers four documented intervals: 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes. Open Pandora’s playback controls, locate Sleep Timer, and select the desired interval. Playback stops when that interval expires.

The Sleep Timer is a one-session schedule, not a permanent battery restriction. Pandora also notes that its former in-app alarm is no longer available to Android users, so do not expect an alarm setting to provide the same function as the timer.

The song is still audible after leaving Pandora
Bring down the notification shade and pause the Pandora media card. If the lock screen is active, use its media control instead. These system controls are often faster than reopening the full app.
Pandora disappears from Recent Apps but returns later
Swiping the card away is temporary; it does not change Pandora’s permissions. If the issue is recurring background activity, inspect the per-app Battery setting and the Sleeping apps lists. Choose a restriction only if you accept that background playback may stop.

Background playback stops when you switch apps
Check whether Pandora is set to Restricted or Deep sleeping. Pandora’s Android troubleshooting guidance specifically directs users to review background restrictions when playback behavior is abnormal, and Samsung warns that battery controls can affect music apps. Restore an optimized or less restrictive setting if you need Pandora to continue playing in the background.

You cannot find Pandora’s media controls
Open Pandora and start or resume playback briefly, then pause it from the Now Playing screen. Notification and lock-screen controls can be hidden, dismissed, or arranged differently on different Galaxy software versions.
You are considering clearing Pandora’s data
Do not clear app data as a routine way to stop playback. Pandora lists clearing data as a troubleshooting measure and warns that it can require you to log in again. Pause, close, sign out, or adjust background permissions first; those controls address the specific task without deleting the app’s local session data.
Choose the least disruptive control
- Choose Pause if you want silence now and expect to listen again soon.
- Choose Recent Apps if you want Pandora’s current app session removed from the open-app list.
- Choose Battery or background limits if your concern is repeated or unwanted background activity, and verify the effect on background music.
- Choose Sign out when ending the account session matters.
- Choose Sleep Timer when playback should stop automatically after 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes.
These controls solve different problems. Starting with Pause avoids changing account or battery settings when all you need is to stop the current track.
