To stop promotional texts from one business, open that business conversation in Google Messages, open the conversation menu, and tap Unsubscribe. Choose a reason if Google asks, then confirm Unsubscribe or Unsubscribe & report. Google sends a STOP or region-appropriate opt-out message from your number. This should stop non-essential messages, while requested messages such as one-time passwords, receipts, boarding passes, or other essential updates may continue.
If you want to stop every message from the sender, use Block & report spam instead. If you only need fewer interruptions, set that conversation’s notifications to Silent. These controls solve different problems, and the right choice depends on whether you want to end promotional delivery, suppress alerts, or report a suspected scam.

How do I unsubscribe from a business in Google Messages?
Use the unsubscribe control inside the specific business conversation. It is a sender-level opt-out, not a master switch for every company that can message you.
- Open Google Messages and select the conversation containing the promotions.
- Open the conversation menu. Depending on your device and the message channel, this may be a More button or another menu control.
- Tap Unsubscribe. Google may also place the control at the bottom of the conversation.
- If prompted, select a reason.
- Confirm Unsubscribe, or choose Unsubscribe & report if you also want to report the business message.
Google Messages then sends a STOP message, or the region-appropriate equivalent, from your phone number to the business. Google describes the expected result as no further non-essential messages from that sender after the STOP request is sent. The business, however, is responsible for updating its own subscription status, so delivery is not guaranteed to change instantly.

What promotional messages does Unsubscribe stop?
Unsubscribe is intended for non-essential business traffic, including marketing and promotional messages. It does not necessarily cancel every type of message that the business is allowed to send.
- Promotions: sales announcements, offers, and similar non-essential messages should be covered by the opt-out.
- Requested essential messages: a one-time password, boarding pass, receipt, appointment information, or another update you requested may still arrive.
- Confirmation or preference messages: the business may send information confirming the opt-out or explaining subscription preferences.
The conversation can remain visible in your inbox after unsubscribing. Therefore, Unsubscribe is best when you still need a company for occasional transactions or travel information but do not want its marketing stream.
What should I choose if I still need the business?
Think about the type of contact you may need later. If the company sends both discount announcements and useful transaction messages, Unsubscribe is the narrower choice. It asks the sender to stop non-essential traffic while leaving room for requested codes, receipts, travel documents, or other necessary updates.
Do not interpret a continuing receipt or verification code as proof that the opt-out failed. Those messages are normally treated differently from marketing. A business may also send a confirmation or preference-management message after receiving the request. If marketing continues after a reasonable processing period, use the same conversation to check whether the option is still available, or block the sender if your actual goal is no contact.
Can I stop every text from a business?
When your goal is to prevent all messages from a sender, open that conversation’s menu and choose Block & report spam. Blocking moves the thread to Spam & blocked and is different from unsubscribing from promotions.
Reporting is a separate decision within that action. A report sends sender and message information to Google and may involve your carrier. Google says a report of business messages can include the sender’s information and up to the 10 most recent business messages. Use reporting when the content appears to be spam, a scam, or otherwise abusive; use Unsubscribe when the sender is legitimate but its marketing is unwanted.
Blocking is intended to stop the sender’s messages, but no messaging filter can promise that every future attempt will be handled identically across networks, message types, or devices. Essential messages from a business you block should not be relied on for delivery.

The table is also a reminder that these controls can be combined. For example, you might unsubscribe from a retailer’s offers and silence its thread while waiting for the business to update its list. You might leave spam protection enabled while separately blocking a suspicious sender. None of these choices is a universal setting for every business conversation.
How to silence promotional-message alerts without unsubscribing
Silencing is useful when you want to retain the conversation and its messages but do not want each arrival to interrupt you.

- Open the business conversation in Google Messages.
- Open the conversation details.
- Choose Notifications.
- Select Silent.
This changes alerts for that conversation only. It does not send an opt-out request, remove the sender’s subscription, or prevent new messages from being delivered. You can continue to open the thread and read incoming messages normally. If you later need alerts again, return to the same conversation-level notification setting and choose the available alert option.
Spam protection is not a promotional opt-out
Google Messages has a separate device-level setting for suspected spam and scams. Google says spam protection is turned on automatically and can notify you when it activates. Its filtering may use on-device machine-learning models and may check message URLs with Google.

To change the setting, use this path:
- Tap your profile picture or initials in Google Messages.
- Open Messages settings.
- Tap Protection & Safety.
- Open Spam protection.
- Turn Enable spam protection off or on.
The option may not appear on every device. Turning spam protection off does not unsubscribe you from a legitimate business and should not be used as a substitute for the conversation-level Unsubscribe control. Conversely, leaving spam protection on does not guarantee that ordinary promotions from a company you recognize will be removed. It is designed to identify suspected spam and scams, not to manage a marketing preference for a particular sender.
Why you may not see Unsubscribe
Eligibility depends on the message channel, the sender, your region, and the device’s current Google Messages interface. Google does not promise identical menu wording on every phone or provide a universal app-version matrix.
Google’s dedicated unsubscribe guidance lists the following availability:
- RCS for Business: the United States, Brazil, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
- SMS or MMS: in the United States, for short codes and alphanumeric senders.
A separate Google RCS help page also lists the Netherlands, so Google’s pages are not completely aligned about regional availability. Treat the control’s presence in the conversation as the practical test. If Unsubscribe is absent, the message may not be an eligible business channel, the sender may not support the opt-out flow, or your region and device may not expose it.

Menu labels can also differ slightly by phone manufacturer or app interface, so look for a More or details control rather than relying on one icon’s position.
What to do when the button is missing or the messages continue
Check the conversation itself
Open the exact thread that contains the promotional messages rather than starting from the general settings screen. Look in the conversation menu and at the bottom of the conversation. The control is associated with an eligible business thread, not with a global preference.
Identify the message channel
RCS for Business, SMS, and MMS do not have identical eligibility. In the United States, Google’s guidance specifically mentions short codes and alphanumeric senders for SMS or MMS. A different sender format may not offer the same control.

Allow time for the sender’s systems
The STOP request is sent from your number, but the business must update its subscription status. A confirmation, preference notice, or an essential message that you requested may still appear. Unsubscribe is therefore not an instant deletion of the thread or a promise that every future message is impossible.

If you need no contact at all, use Block & report spam rather than repeating Unsubscribe. If you only need quiet alerts, use Silent. If the content is suspicious, report it and consider blocking it instead of treating it as an ordinary marketing preference.
Keep the original thread available
Do not delete the conversation before checking its menu if you are trying to find the control. The unsubscribe and notification options are tied to the conversation. Keeping the thread also lets you distinguish a legitimate confirmation or requested transaction message from another promotional campaign.
How to subscribe again after unsubscribing
If you change your mind, open the business conversation and use Subscribe in the conversation menu, or use the option at the bottom of the thread when it is shown.
In RCS chats, sending a message to the business after unsubscribing may itself count as a request to resubscribe. Google says the business is responsible for updating its subscription status, so the business may determine when promotional messages resume. A reply is therefore not necessarily an instant switch; it is a request that the business must process.
India: handling the new-business consent prompt
Google documents an additional prompt in India for some messages from businesses that have not contacted you before. The dialog can offer Allow, Block and unsubscribe, or Close.
- Allow permits the conversation to proceed.
- Block and unsubscribe blocks the business and opts out of its messages.
- Close hides the message without making the same permanent choice; the prompt can reappear.
If you blocked a business through that India-specific dialog and later want its messages, Google says to unblock it under Spam and blocked, then resubscribe in the conversation. This prompt is an additional India-specific flow, not a replacement for the ordinary conversation menu on every device or for every business.
Privacy implications of unsubscribing and reporting
For an RCS business conversation, Google says the unsubscribe action sends a STOP message from your number. The business is expected to honor that request. Verified RCS business conversations are not end-to-end encrypted, according to Google’s help information; businesses, messaging solution providers, and carriers may access message content for delivery and related purposes.
Reporting has a different data path from unsubscribing. Google says reporting business messages as spam can send sender information and up to 10 of the most recent business messages to Google, and may involve the carrier. If you are merely tired of legitimate offers, Unsubscribe avoids turning a preference change into a spam report. If the sender is deceptive or abusive, the reporting route gives Google and potentially the carrier information to investigate.

These distinctions matter when deciding between Unsubscribe and Unsubscribe & report. The latter combines the opt-out request with a report. Choose it only when you want Google to receive the reporting information as well as asking the business to stop non-essential messages.

You still use the retailer
Choose Unsubscribe if you want sales texts to stop but may need order receipts or a one-time delivery update. Those requested messages may remain available even after the marketing opt-out.
You never want the sender again
Choose Block & report spam when the sender is unwanted altogether. Remember that blocking can also prevent useful codes, receipts, or travel information from reaching you.
The messages are useful but badly timed
Choose Silent when you want the thread retained and delivery unchanged but do not want alerts. This is a notification decision, not a subscription decision.

The message looks fraudulent
Use the reporting and blocking route rather than an ordinary marketing opt-out. Reporting can share sender information and recent messages with Google and may involve your carrier.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Unsubscribe when the sender is legitimate and you want non-essential promotions to stop.
- Choose Block & report spam when you want no messages from the sender or the content appears fraudulent, abusive, or unsolicited.
- Choose Silent when delivery is useful but alerts are disruptive.
- Leave Spam protection enabled when you want Google’s device-level filtering for suspected spam and scams; do not treat it as a marketing-subscription setting.
- Keep essential-message expectations in mind: opt-outs and blocks can affect access to codes, receipts, travel documents, and other updates.
- If no control appears, treat channel and regional eligibility as the likely explanation rather than assuming a hidden universal switch exists.
- Check both the conversation menu and the bottom of the thread before concluding that the feature is unavailable.
- Use the sender-specific control instead of changing a global setting when only one business is bothering you.

No. Google says the conversation can remain in your inbox. Unsubscribe changes the subscription request; it does not delete the thread. You can still open it to read messages or use Subscribe later if that option is available.
Why is Unsubscribe missing in my conversation?
