Amazon does not provide one universal switch that removes every personalized suggestion, ad, Alexa prompt, and Echo Show promotion. To reduce personalization, change the control that matches the surface you are using: Improve Your Recommendations for shopping suggestions, Your Ads Privacy Choices for interest-based advertising, Your Browsing History for viewed-item signals, and Alexa privacy or device settings for Echo products. These controls work independently, so limiting one does not automatically disable the others.
First identify what you want to stop
“Amazon recommendations” can mean several different things. A product carousel on Amazon’s shopping site, an advertisement selected using interests, an Alexa suggested action, and a sponsored card on an Echo Show are governed by different settings. Choosing the wrong control can leave the feature you dislike unchanged.
| What you see | Relevant Amazon control | What the control changes | What it does not promise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product suggestions in the Amazon store | Improve Your Recommendations | Lets you manage recommendation inputs and exclude individual items. | It is not documented as a master switch for every recommendation surface. |
| Products you recently viewed | Your Browsing History | Lets you edit browsing-history entries that can influence shopping suggestions. | Editing history does not erase every other account signal. |
| Interest-based advertising | Your Ads Privacy Choices | Changes Amazon’s advertising preference. | Opting out of interest-based ads does not guarantee an ad-free experience or remove store recommendations. |
| Alexa personalization and suggested content | Alexa Privacy and Manage Your Alexa Data | Provides Alexa and device-specific privacy and suggested-content controls. | These settings are separate from shopping recommendations. |
| Sponsored content on an Echo Show | Echo device controls | Some suggested-content preferences may be available. | Amazon says Echo Show sponsored ads cannot all be turned off; an individual ad can be skipped. |
Amazon’s menu names and paths can differ by country marketplace, account type, mobile app, browser, Alexa app version, and device software. The names above are the labels documented by Amazon. If a label is not where you expect it, use the current account or device settings search rather than assuming another control has the same effect.

For suggestions on Amazon’s retail site—such as “Inspired by your browsing history,” “Customers who viewed this item also viewed,” or similar product rows—start with Improve Your Recommendations. Amazon’s Privacy Notice identifies this page as the place to manage store recommendations and says you can remove an unwanted recommendation by unchecking the Use this item for recommendations toggle beside that item.
Use Improve Your Recommendations
- Sign in to the Amazon account whose shopping suggestions you want to change.
- Open the account area and go to Improve Your Recommendations. On a different marketplace or app version, search the account settings for that exact phrase.
- Review the items Amazon presents as recommendation inputs. For any item you do not want used, turn off or uncheck Use this item for recommendations.
- Continue through the list and remove other items that do not represent your current interests. Save or confirm changes if the page presents a confirmation control.
- Return to the shopping pages after the account change has taken effect. Recommendations may not change everywhere immediately, and a different surface may be using a different signal.
This is a selective control, not a promise to suppress every product suggestion. It is useful when one purchase, gift, accidental click, or short-lived interest is distorting the products Amazon shows you. Removing that item from recommendation use does not delete the order, review, List entry, or other account record associated with it.

Exclude an individual item when one signal is the problem
If most suggestions are useful but one item keeps producing irrelevant products, use the item-level toggle instead of trying to change every setting. Amazon’s documented wording is “Use this item for recommendations.” Turn that option off for each unsuitable item you can identify. This approach is especially appropriate for gifts, one-time projects, children’s products bought for someone else, or products you researched but do not intend to buy again.
Edit Your Browsing History
- Open Your Browsing History from the account area or find it with Amazon’s settings search.
- Review viewed products and remove entries you do not want associated with future shopping suggestions, using the controls shown on that page.
- Repeat the review on the marketplace and account you actually use. Amazon accounts and regional storefronts can present different menus.
- Check the recommendation page again and exclude any remaining item-level inputs that you do not want used.
Browsing history is only one source of personalization. Amazon’s own description of its shopping experience also names purchase history, Alexa for Shopping conversations, product reviews, Lists, and searches as inputs. Therefore, deleting a viewed-product entry may reduce one signal while leaving recommendations influenced by an order, review, List, search, or Alexa interaction.

Ads are a separate issue from product recommendations. To change the use of your activity for advertising, open Your Ads Privacy Choices while signed in to the relevant Amazon account and select the preference offered there. Amazon’s Privacy Notice points to this control specifically for personalized advertising.
What to expect after changing the ad preference
- The setting concerns advertising personalization, not a universal Amazon recommendation switch.
- You may continue to see ads; an advertising opt-out is not the same as removing all commercial content.
- Store recommendation rows can remain because they are managed through recommendation and activity controls.
- Alexa and Echo Show settings can remain independently configured.
Amazon’s Alexa guidance cautions that if you do not consent to cookies used for interest-based ads, you may still receive personalized recommendations and other similar features. In practical terms, changing the ad preference can reduce interest-based ad selection without making the shopping site or an Alexa device behave as if personalization has been disabled.

Change both controls when you want to limit advertising and shopping suggestions
- Change the relevant option in Your Ads Privacy Choices.
- Separately open Improve Your Recommendations and exclude unwanted item inputs.
- Edit Your Browsing History if viewed products are producing the suggestions you want to avoid.
- Review Alexa and Echo Show settings if the content appears on a voice assistant or screen device.
Doing these steps addresses the four documented control areas without treating an advertising choice as a master privacy switch.
Reduce the effect of browsing history
Amazon identifies Your Browsing History as editable. Removing entries is the account-level way to limit viewed-product activity that can feed recommendations. It is different from deleting your entire Amazon account, canceling orders, or removing reviews.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Browse without linking activity to an account
Amazon’s Privacy Notice also describes a narrower browsing option: sign out of Amazon and block browser cookies. This can let you browse without linking that browsing history to the signed-in account in the usual way. It is not a global opt-out from Amazon data use, and it does not change activity already associated with an account.
- Sign out before browsing products you do not want associated with your account.
- Use your browser’s privacy controls to block the cookies Amazon uses for the relevant browsing session.
- Do not sign back in during that session if keeping the activity separate is the goal.
- When you return to normal shopping, remember that cookie blocking can affect sign-in persistence and other site functions.
Cookie behavior differs by browser and marketplace, so treat this as a browsing-session measure rather than a replacement for the account controls. It does not erase purchase history, reviews, Lists, Alexa interactions, or other records.

Control Alexa recommendations and Echo Show content
Alexa and Echo Show devices have their own privacy and suggested-content controls. Amazon’s Alexa and device guidance separates these controls from shopping recommendations and advertising preferences on the retail site.
Find Alexa privacy and data controls
- Open the Alexa app or the Alexa account settings associated with your device.
- Look for Alexa Privacy and Manage Your Alexa Data. Menu placement can vary with the app version and country.
- Review the available options for voice activity, advertising preferences, and suggested content.
- Change only the setting that matches the behavior you want to limit, then check the device again.
The exact labels and availability can differ outside the United Kingdom, where the cited Alexa and Echo Show help material was published. A missing label does not mean the shopping recommendation control has moved; it may indicate a regional or software-version difference.
Interest-based ads are not the same as Alexa recommendations
Turning off interest-based ads does not necessarily turn off personalized recommendations or similar Alexa features. Amazon states this limitation directly in its Alexa guidance. If Alexa continues to suggest content after an ad preference change, that behavior is consistent with the controls being separate rather than evidence that the ad preference failed.
Echo Show sponsored ads cannot all be disabled
Amazon’s Echo Show help says that these ads cannot all be turned off. When an individual sponsored ad appears, the documented action is to swipe from right to left on the screen to skip it. Skipping removes that displayed ad; it is not a permanent opt-out from all Echo Show advertising.
- Use Alexa privacy and data settings to review available personalization choices.
- Use the Echo Show’s suggested-content options, if present on your software version, for device-level adjustments.
- Use the swipe gesture to skip an individual sponsored ad.
- Do not expect the retail-site ad preference to eliminate every Echo Show promotion.
Why recommendations can remain after you change a setting
Amazon personalizes shopping through multiple types of activity. Its About You announcement names purchase history, Alexa for Shopping conversations, product reviews, Lists, and searches, in addition to the browsing activity managed through Your Browsing History. A recommendation can therefore persist when you remove only one input.

A single item is still influencing suggestions
Return to Improve Your Recommendations and look for the item-level Use this item for recommendations option. This is the documented way to exclude a particular product rather than relying only on a general browsing-history edit.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You changed ads instead of recommendations
Check whether the setting you changed was Your Ads Privacy Choices. That page addresses advertising personalization. Product rows on the shopping site require the recommendation and browsing-history controls instead.
The content is coming from Alexa or an Echo Show
Move to Alexa Privacy, Manage Your Alexa Data, and the device’s suggested-content controls. Retail-site settings do not serve as a universal control for voice-assistant or screen-device behavior.
The account still has other signals
Orders, reviews, Lists, searches, and Alexa for Shopping conversations are separate signals named by Amazon. Editing a viewed item does not remove those records. If the goal is to reduce the influence of one gift or shared purchase, exclude that item and remove related browsing entries, then recognize that other account activity may still shape the results.
Best Value
You are viewing a different marketplace or account
Verify the signed-in account, country marketplace, browser profile, and Alexa account linked to the device. Amazon’s support material warns that labels and availability can vary by country and device software. A change made in one account or surface may not affect another.
A practical sequence for limiting personalization
Use this order when you want the broadest reduction supported by Amazon’s documented controls without confusing one setting for another.
- Classify the content. Decide whether it is a shopping suggestion, an advertisement, browsing-history result, Alexa suggestion, or Echo Show sponsored content.
- Change the matching control. Use Improve Your Recommendations for store suggestions, Your Ads Privacy Choices for ads, Your Browsing History for viewed items, and Alexa or device controls for Echo products.
- Exclude specific items. On Improve Your Recommendations, turn off Use this item for recommendations for products that should not influence future suggestions.
- Review the remaining signals. Consider whether purchase history, reviews, Lists, searches, or Alexa for Shopping conversations explain what remains.
- Test the same surface again. Recheck the exact page or device where the content appeared; a different surface may legitimately use a separate control.
- Use signed-out browsing when appropriate. For a session that should not be linked to the account, sign out and block browser cookies, understanding that this is not a global opt-out.
The sequence is deliberately selective. It limits the signals and ad categories Amazon documents without claiming that every recommendation, ad, or sponsored message can be removed.
Privacy expectations and trade-offs
Limiting personalization can make suggestions less tailored, but Amazon does not describe these controls as deleting all account data or guaranteeing a recommendation-free interface. Excluding an item removes that item as a recommendation input; it does not necessarily remove the underlying order, review, List, or Alexa record. Editing browsing history affects that activity category, while purchase and engagement data may remain relevant.
Blocking cookies and browsing signed out can reduce account-linked browsing for that session, but it can also reduce convenience because sign-in persistence and other site behavior depend on cookies. Alexa and Echo Show controls may reduce some suggested content while leaving sponsored ads or other device features in place.
The most accurate expectation is therefore limitation, not total elimination: use the control for each surface, remove the signals you can identify, and treat remaining recommendations or ads as possible results of separate settings and signals.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- Store product suggestions: open Improve Your Recommendations.
- One unwanted product: uncheck Use this item for recommendations.
- Viewed products: edit Your Browsing History.
- Interest-based ads: change Your Ads Privacy Choices.
- Alexa personalization: review Alexa Privacy and Manage Your Alexa Data.
- Echo Show sponsored ad: swipe from right to left to skip the individual ad; Amazon says these ads cannot all be turned off.
- Unlinked browsing session: sign out and block browser cookies, without treating that as a global data-use opt-out.
- Different result after a change: verify the account, marketplace, app, browser, and device surface, then check the separate control for that surface.
What Amazon’s controls can—and cannot—do
Amazon documents a set of focused controls rather than a single “turn off personalization” button. Improve Your Recommendations and Your Browsing History address shopping inputs; Your Ads Privacy Choices addresses advertising preference; Alexa Privacy and Manage Your Alexa Data address voice-assistant and device data; and Echo Show help documents skipping individual sponsored ads while stating that all such ads cannot be disabled. Using these controls together is the practical way to reduce personalization while keeping expectations aligned with Amazon’s stated limits.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
