The practical control depends on where you encounter Yahoo’s AI: in the Yahoo Search app, select Search instead of Ask AI; for a whole network, an administrator can map chat.search.yahoo.com to search.yahoo.com in a router or proxy. The first choice changes the mode for that app experience. The second applies to Yahoo’s documented AI Chat endpoint for everyone on the network and is not a universal switch for every Yahoo AI feature.
What you can and cannot turn off
Yahoo’s official help documentation uses two related names. Yahoo Scout is Yahoo’s AI search experience, while the Yahoo Search app labels its AI mode Ask AI. Yahoo presents traditional Search and Ask AI as separate choices in the app. The documentation reviewed does not establish a general Yahoo account preference that suppresses all AI-generated answers across Search, Scout, Chat, the mobile web and every app.

- You want ordinary links instead of an AI answer in the Yahoo Search app: choose Search, not Ask AI.
- You administer a school, office or home network and want to disable Yahoo AI Chat for everyone: create the documented router or proxy mapping from
chat.search.yahoo.comtosearch.yahoo.com. - You want to remove personalization, adult content or certain result categories: use the separate Yahoo preferences for those functions. They do not disable Scout or Ask AI.
Yahoo says the app saves the last selected search method automatically. If you previously used Ask AI, the app may continue opening that mode until you select Search again.

Choose Search in the Yahoo Search app
What this setting changes
In the Yahoo Search app, the Search tab offers two distinct methods. Search returns traditional Yahoo Search results. Ask AI requests a response generated by Yahoo Scout. Selecting Search is therefore the documented way to avoid deliberately entering the AI mode in that app experience.
This is a mode selection, not an account-wide opt-out. It does not claim to remove AI features that Yahoo may expose elsewhere, such as a Scout entry point on mobile web or desktop.
Steps
- Open the Yahoo Search app.
- Go to the search method selector in the Search area.
- Select Search rather than Ask AI.
- Run your query from the Search mode.
- Close and reopen the app later if you want to confirm that the same method was remembered. Yahoo says the last selected method is saved automatically.
Exact placement, wording and availability can vary by app version. If you do not see both choices, update the app through your device’s normal app store and check Yahoo’s current help guidance for that version; do not assume that another preference, such as SafeSearch, is an AI switch.

If the app keeps opening AI answers
- Look at the active label before submitting the query. It should say Search, not Ask AI.
- Return to the selector and choose Search again. The saved method is tied to the app experience, so merely deleting a query does not change it.
- Use the regular Search entry point rather than a Scout or Ask AI prompt when the app offers both.
- If the labels or selector are missing, treat that as an interface or availability difference rather than evidence that SafeSearch, history or personalization controls disable AI.
What Yahoo Scout does on the web
Yahoo’s Scout help material describes opening Scout on desktop or through Yahoo Search mobile web or the app, asking a question and continuing with follow-up prompts. Those instructions explain how to use Scout; they do not document a global opt-out switch.

On a browser, the safest way to limit AI is to use the ordinary Yahoo Search page and avoid opening a Scout prompt. Because Yahoo can change labels and entry points, do not rely on an old screenshot or assume that a browser preference will permanently hide every AI surface. If an AI panel appears as part of a particular result page, the available controls may be specific to that page rather than a permanent account setting.
Block Yahoo AI Chat across a network
When this method is appropriate
Yahoo documents a network-level option for turning off AI Chat for all users on a network. An administrator configures the existing router or proxy so that chat.search.yahoo.com maps to search.yahoo.com. Yahoo recommends using a CNAME entry rather than hard-coding an IP address, because the mapping continues to work if the IP addresses for search.yahoo.com change.
This is materially different from selecting Search in the app. It is an administrator-controlled policy that affects everyone using that network, and Yahoo’s instructions are specifically about the Chat endpoint. They do not establish that the mapping disables Yahoo Scout, Ask AI or every future Yahoo AI feature.
Administrator procedure
- Confirm authority and scope. Make sure you administer the router, DNS service or proxy. A network-wide change can affect family members, guests, employees, students and managed devices.
- Identify the configuration screen. Open the router or proxy interface used for DNS, host overrides or domain mappings. The label differs by vendor; follow that vendor’s instructions for creating a CNAME or equivalent host rule.
- Create the documented mapping. Set the source hostname to
chat.search.yahoo.comand the target hostname tosearch.yahoo.com. Use a CNAME-style hostname mapping as Yahoo recommends, rather than entering a fixed address for the target. - Save and apply the policy. Some network equipment requires an explicit Apply, Commit or reload action. Use the procedure supplied by the equipment vendor.
- Test from a client on that network. Try the Yahoo Chat address from a normal user device and verify that the network policy is preventing the intended Chat access. The exact browser message or response is implementation-dependent, so do not treat one particular error page as a required result.
- Document the change. Record the source hostname, target hostname, date and reason. This makes later troubleshooting and rollback safer.
How to undo it
Remove or disable the CNAME/host mapping in the same router or proxy interface, then apply the configuration according to the vendor’s procedure. Test again from an affected client. Do not replace the rule with a guessed IP address: Yahoo’s reason for recommending a CNAME is that search host addresses can change.

Limitations and risks
- The rule is network-wide, not a personal Yahoo account preference.
- It covers the hostname Yahoo identifies for AI Chat. It is not evidence of a universal Yahoo AI block.
- Users on cellular data, a different Wi-Fi network or a separate VPN/proxy path may not be governed by the rule.
- A mistaken host rule can disrupt more than the intended Chat function. If unrelated Yahoo access changes, disable the rule and review the entry with the network equipment documentation.
- Because the setting is administrative, ordinary Yahoo users may need to ask the network owner to make or remove it.
Controls that do not disable Yahoo AI
SafeSearch
SafeSearch controls the type of content shown by filtering adult material. Yahoo lists Strict, Moderate and Off choices. None is described as a setting for turning off AI-generated responses. You can use SafeSearch for content filtering while still receiving a Scout or Ask AI response.
Result-category and time filters
Yahoo’s result filters narrow a search by category or timeframe. Examples include All, News, Images, Videos, Local and Shopping, along with a time range. These filters change which results are displayed; Yahoo does not present them as an AI toggle.
Personal results
Personal results can include information such as package deliveries and deals drawn from connected mail accounts. Yahoo says these can be deselected in Search Preferences. Turning them off limits account-linked personalization, not Scout-generated answers.

Yahoo’s iOS app settings include controls for app personalization and search history. The documentation describes those settings as applying to the iOS app; it does not describe them as controls for AI answers. Clearing history may change what the app remembers, but it should not be presented as a Yahoo AI opt-out.

Check the second row carefully: the target hostname is search.yahoo.com. The source hostname is chat.search.yahoo.com. A typo or reversed mapping can produce a different result from the documented configuration.
Yahoo Search Preferences and account scope
Yahoo’s general Search Preferences help covers desktop and mobile access. When you are signed in, preferences can be changed from computers or mobile devices. When you are not signed in, Yahoo saves those preferences only on the particular device or computer.
That distinction matters when diagnosing inconsistent behavior. A preference changed while signed out may not follow you to another browser or phone. It also does not create the missing global AI switch: the reviewed Search Preferences material does not list a setting that suppresses every AI-generated result.
Troubleshooting by symptom
“I selected Search, but I still see an AI answer.”
First verify the active mode label immediately before running the query. If it says Ask AI, the app is still using the Scout mode. If it says Search, the page may be showing an AI entry point outside the app-mode selector; use the ordinary results view and avoid opening that prompt. Yahoo’s documented app setting distinguishes the two modes but does not promise that every AI element elsewhere in Yahoo disappears.
“The network rule did not affect my device.”
- Confirm that the device is actually using the managed router, DNS path or proxy.
- Check that the source hostname is exactly
chat.search.yahoo.comand the target is exactlysearch.yahoo.com. - Verify that the rule was saved and applied in the network equipment’s own interface.
- Test from another client on the same network to separate a device-specific issue from a network-policy issue.
- If the result is still unclear, consult the router or proxy vendor’s documentation for its host-mapping behavior. Yahoo specifies the mapping, but not one universal response message for every network product.
“Some people are blocked, but others are not.”
That usually indicates different network paths or scopes. A guest network, cellular connection, VPN, separate proxy or manually configured DNS service may bypass the administrator’s rule. The mapping is not tied to a Yahoo login, so it cannot govern traffic that does not use the configured network path.
“Search results are personalized even after I changed settings.”
Review the separate Personal Results setting and whether you are signed in. Personal results concern connected account information such as deliveries and deals; they are independent of the app’s Search-versus-Ask-AI selector. Signed-out preferences are device-specific, so changing one browser does not necessarily change another.
Which option should you use?
- For one person using the Yahoo app: select Search and leave the app in that mode.
- For a managed household, classroom or workplace: ask the network administrator about the documented Chat hostname mapping, after confirming that a network-wide policy is acceptable.
- For fewer personal or adult-content results: adjust Personal Results or SafeSearch for their stated purposes, without expecting either to remove AI.
- For a complete account-level AI shutdown: Yahoo’s reviewed help pages do not establish that such a switch exists, so do not rely on an undocumented preference or promise that one control covers every Yahoo AI surface.
Practical privacy and control checklist
- Identify whether the screen says Search, Ask AI or Scout before entering a question.
- Use Search for traditional results in the Yahoo Search app.
- Remember that Yahoo saves the app’s last selected method.
- Do not confuse SafeSearch, category filters, Personal Results or history with AI controls.
- If you administer a network, use the documented CNAME-style mapping from
chat.search.yahoo.comtosearch.yahoo.com. - Tell users that the network rule applies to Yahoo AI Chat and may not cover Scout or Ask AI.
- Record and test any router or proxy change, and keep a rollback path.
- Check signed-in versus signed-out preference scope when settings differ between devices.
The Bottom Line
For the Yahoo Search app, choose Search instead of Ask AI. For a managed network, an administrator can map chat.search.yahoo.com to search.yahoo.com to disable Yahoo’s documented AI Chat endpoint for users on that network. Yahoo’s published help does not establish a universal account-level switch that turns off every AI-generated Yahoo result.
