On a computer, sign in, open your profile menu, choose Restricted Mode, and switch it on. On Android, use Profile picture → Settings → General → Restricted Mode. On Android TV, open YouTube Settings and select Restricted Mode or Safety Mode. The setting removes comment visibility, but it is a broad content filter rather than a viewer-controlled list of offensive words.
Use Restricted Mode to remove comments from the viewing screen
YouTube’s viewer-side solution is Restricted Mode. YouTube Help states: “When Restricted Mode is turned on, you can’t view comments on the videos you watch.” That makes it the practical way to watch a game trailer without seeing the argument, spoilers, insults, or other comments beneath it.

Restricted Mode is enabled separately for each browser, profile, or device. Turning it on in Chrome on a laptop does not automatically turn it on in a different browser, a phone, or a television. Follow the path for every place where you watch trailers.

Computer browser
- Sign in to YouTube.
- Select your profile picture or account menu in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Restricted Mode.
- Activate the Restricted Mode switch.
After it is enabled, open the trailer again. The video can continue to play, but the comments section is not available while the mode is active. If several people use the same computer, check which browser profile is open: the setting is associated with the browser or profile where you changed it.

Android phone or tablet
- Open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings.
- Open General.
- Turn on Restricted Mode.
Return to the game-trailer video after changing the setting. If you use more than one Google or YouTube profile in the app, verify that you changed the setting in the profile used for viewing.
Android TV
- Open the YouTube app on the television.
- Open Settings.
- Select Restricted Mode or Safety Mode, depending on the label shown by that TV version.
- Turn the mode on.
The setting applies to that television environment. A phone or computer connected to the same account may still show comments until Restricted Mode is enabled there too.
What Restricted Mode filters—and what it does not
Restricted Mode is designed to limit potentially mature material across YouTube, not merely to clean up a single comment thread. YouTube says its decision can use signals such as a video’s metadata, title, language, Community Guidelines reviews, and age restrictions. Those signals are evaluated broadly, so the mode can affect which videos appear in searches or recommendations as well as whether comments are visible.

It is optional and is not the same as an age restriction. An age-restricted video is limited under YouTube’s age-access rules; Restricted Mode is a viewer preference or policy setting that intentionally narrows the YouTube experience. A trailer can therefore be unavailable or less prominent in Restricted Mode even when it is not formally age-restricted.

There is no viewer-facing setting that means “hide insults but keep ordinary discussion.” Restricted Mode does not expose a custom toxicity slider, a selectable word list, or a per-channel comment filter. Its broader classification is the trade-off for removing the entire comment view without moderating individual posts yourself.
Why a harmless trailer can be affected
Game trailers often include intense language in titles, descriptions, captions, or surrounding discussion. Because Restricted Mode considers multiple signals rather than only the visible comment text, an otherwise ordinary trailer may be filtered or appear differently. The system is intended to reduce potentially mature material, not to make a precise judgment about whether every comment is toxic.
Why YouTube comments may be missing even when you did not hide them
Restricted Mode is one explanation, but it is not the only one. A missing comment section can result from several different conditions:
- Restricted Mode is active. When enabled for the current browser, app, or TV, comments are intentionally unavailable.
- The video owner turned comments off. A channel can disable comments on its own upload, so no viewer setting can restore them.
- YouTube is applying an age or safety limitation. The video’s access and interaction options can differ when age restrictions or other platform protections apply.
- An administrator or network policy is enforcing the mode. Schools, libraries, family-management systems, mobile providers, DNS filters, and other network administrators can impose content restrictions.
- The app or browser is using a different profile or device setting. Restricted Mode does not automatically follow you across every browser, profile, and device.
Check the profile menu first. If Restricted Mode is visibly on, turn it off only if you are comfortable restoring the broader YouTube experience. If it is off and the comments remain absent, the video owner or a platform-level limitation may be responsible rather than your local preference.

Can a viewer block specific toxic words on someone else’s trailer?
No. YouTube does not provide an ordinary viewer with a personal blocked-word list for another channel’s video. You cannot enter words such as insults, slurs, or spoilers and have YouTube hide only comments containing those terms while leaving the rest of the trailer’s discussion visible.
Word lists and comment queues belong to channel moderation. They are controls for the owner or authorized moderators of the channel, not personal filters that travel with a viewer’s account. Browser extensions or parental-control products may offer separate filtering, but they are outside YouTube’s native viewer controls and are not required for the all-comments-hidden result that Restricted Mode provides.
How channel owners moderate comments on their own videos
If you publish game trailers or manage a channel, YouTube provides substantially more precise controls. These settings affect comments on your channel, not the comments a viewer sees on somebody else’s upload.

Comments containing blocked words or links can remain in the review queue for up to 60 days under YouTube’s current creator documentation. That retention period concerns creator review; it does not describe how long a viewer’s Restricted Mode setting lasts or preserve a viewer’s hidden-comment list.

Defaults versus existing uploads
Creator moderation defaults generally govern new uploads. Existing videos can have separate comment settings, so changing a channel default does not necessarily retrofit every previously published trailer. Review the individual video when an older upload still needs a different moderation policy.
Viewer controls and creator controls are different systems

Make the setting persist where you watch trailers
Because Restricted Mode works at browser or device level, treat every viewing environment as a separate switch:
- Turn it on in each desktop browser you use, such as a work browser and a personal browser.
- Check every browser profile, especially when a family member or a second Google account uses the same computer.
- Enable it in the YouTube app on each Android device where you want comments hidden.
- Set it independently on an Android TV or other television environment rather than assuming the phone setting carries over.
- After a browser reset, app reinstall, profile change, or device change, verify the setting again.
This separation is deliberate: a viewer can keep a restricted viewing environment on a shared TV while leaving a personal browser unrestricted, or apply the opposite arrangement. It also explains why comments may appear on one screen and be missing on another at the same time.

Some networks enforce content restrictions outside the local YouTube menu. A school, library, employer, family-management setup, mobile provider, DNS policy, or another network administrator may lock the mode. In that situation, the switch can be unavailable, can turn back on after you change it, or can show a notice that the setting is managed.
YouTube directs users to its content-restrictions troubleshooting information to identify administrator- or network-level controls. If the restriction belongs to an organization or family manager, only the responsible administrator can change the policy. Do not assume that clearing the app cache or changing the video will override a rule enforced upstream.
Troubleshoot comments that are still visible or still missing
Comments are still visible after you enabled Restricted Mode
- Reopen the profile menu and confirm that Restricted Mode is shown as on, not merely that you opened its menu.
- Confirm that you changed the setting in the same browser profile, YouTube app profile, or TV account currently playing the trailer.
- Refresh the video or close and reopen the app so the current session reloads its viewing policy.
- Check another trailer in the same environment. If comments are hidden there but not on one video, the video may have unusual availability or display behavior rather than a failed setting.
- Check other devices separately; a correct setting on a phone does not configure a desktop browser or television.
Comments are missing after you turned Restricted Mode off
- The creator may have disabled comments on that trailer.
- The channel may be using a moderation or safety setting that prevents public comments from appearing immediately.
- The video or account may be subject to an age or other platform limitation.
- A network administrator may still be enforcing a restriction even though the local menu appears off.
- You may be viewing a different account, browser profile, or device than the one you changed.
Compare the same trailer in an environment you control, such as a personal browser and a mobile connection, only to identify where the restriction originates. The comparison does not change the creator’s settings or bypass an administrator’s policy.
The Restricted Mode switch cannot be changed
A locked or repeatedly restored switch usually indicates an administrator, family-management, provider, or network-level policy. Follow YouTube’s content-restrictions troubleshooting guidance and contact the organization or account manager that controls the policy. Local browser settings cannot grant permission that the network has removed.
Choose the least disruptive way to watch a trailer
You want every comment gone
Use Restricted Mode. It is the only native viewer setting in the supplied YouTube controls that directly removes comment visibility across the videos you watch. Accept that it can also narrow video discovery and filter some mature material beyond the trailer’s comment area.
You want comments available but not on one creator’s video
Restricted Mode is broader than that request, and a viewer cannot apply a private word list to another channel. The practical choices are to leave comments closed for that viewing session or watch the trailer without opening the comment section. If the creator wants targeted filtering, the channel’s own blocked-word, blocked-link, hidden-user, or moderation-queue settings are the appropriate tools.
You manage the trailer channel
Use Basic or Strict moderation when you want an automated queue, add terms to the channel’s blocked-word list for recurring abuse, hold URL-containing comments to reduce promotion and scams, hide repeat offenders, or turn comments off when discussion is not appropriate. Decide whether the policy is a default for future uploads or a separate setting for an existing trailer.

- Restricted Mode is not a profanity-only filter and cannot be tuned to preserve every ordinary comment.
- It is not an age-verification mechanism; age restrictions and Restricted Mode are separate YouTube systems.
- It does not give a viewer authority over another channel’s comments.
- Its behavior can vary with metadata, language, Community Guidelines reviews, and age-related signals, so a trailer may be filtered even when the viewer considers it harmless.
- No reliable official percentage establishes how often game-trailer comments are toxic, so claims about a prevalence rate should not be treated as measured fact.
A simple setup for a spoiler- and abuse-free trailer session
- Before starting the trailer, enable Restricted Mode on the exact browser, Android app profile, or Android TV where you will watch.
- Open the trailer and verify that the comment area is no longer available.
- If the trailer itself disappears or recommendations become narrower, decide whether the broader filter is acceptable for that session.
- If comments are absent when you expected them, check whether the creator disabled them or whether a managed network is responsible.
- For channel owners, configure moderation separately; viewer Restricted Mode cannot replace a channel’s own comment policy.
