There is no single police or wanted-level switch for every Grand Theft Auto game. In GTA V, Director Mode has a session-only Wanted Level: Disabled setting; Story Mode offers a cheat to lower stars, while GTA Online lets you pay Lester to clear an active wanted level. San Andreas uses different cheats, and disabling police systems in FiveM requires server-side configuration.
Choose the right method for your GTA game and mode
First identify the game and mode you are playing. GTA V Story Mode, GTA V Director Mode, GTA Online, GTA: San Andreas, and a FiveM roleplay server use different controls. The GTA V manual hosted by Xbox describes the standard wanted-level system: police interest is shown with stars, from one to five; at five stars, the National Guard joins the response.

| Option | Where it applies | Effect | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wanted Level: Disabled | GTA V Director Mode | Prevents gaining a wanted level during that session | Does not disable every response to an existing fight or direct attack |
| LAWYERUP cheat | GTA V Story Mode | Lowers wanted stars | Not a permanent setting that prevents future wanted levels |
| Call Lester | GTA Online | Removes an active wanted level for an in-game fee | Clears the current wanted level; it is not an off switch |
| Wanted-level cheats | GTA: San Andreas | Can remove, raise, or lock the wanted level | Codes are specific to San Andreas |
| Script configuration | FiveM server operation | Can suppress wanted stars and configure AI police systems separately | Requires server-side scripting; it is not a regular player’s menu setting |
GTA V Director Mode: disable wanted-level gain for a session
Director Mode offers a built-in wanted-level choice with Normal, Low, Medium, High, and Disabled settings. Choose Disabled to prevent gaining a wanted level in that Director Mode session. This option applies to Director Mode, not GTA V Story Mode or GTA Online. The Director Mode reference also cautions that police, military, or security forces may still attack if the actor is already in a battle or is directly attacked.

For Story Mode, PC Gamer lists LAWYERUP as the lower-wanted-level cheat. The guide provides PC and phone input as well as PlayStation and Xbox button combinations; use the sequence for your platform and edition in its GTA V cheats guide. This reduces wanted stars when used; the available guidance does not establish a permanent Story Mode menu option that disables all future wanted levels.

GTA Online: clear an active wanted level through Lester
In GTA Online, call Lester and pay the in-game fee to remove an active wanted level, as described in Rockstar’s GTA Online Starter Tips. This removes the current wanted level rather than disabling the system.
A Gameranx report dated December 23, 2025, said a “Clear on Death” option was present in game code but disabled at the time. That report does not confirm the option is currently available, so it should not be treated as a usable setting: Gameranx report.

FiveM: configure wanted stars and AI police as a server operator
For the question “How do I disable the wanted level in FiveM?” or “How do I stop AI police from responding?”, the answer depends on server configuration. A FiveM specialist guide describes a client script using SetMaxWantedLevel(0) to prevent stars. It also covers separate controls for an existing wanted status, dispatch services, random cops, and scanner audio. These settings are distinct: suppressing stars alone does not necessarily disable every AI response system.

The guide warns that other scripts or events may reset the settings, so an operator may need to apply them again when a player loads. See FiveM-MiniMaps’ guide to disabling wanted levels and AI police. This scripting route is for server operators, not a setting available in a normal player’s GTA menu.
