How to Turn Off Optional Diagnostic Data in Windows 11 When the Setting Won’t Change

If Send optional diagnostic data will not turn off in Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback and choose the required-only option. If the control is greyed out, missing, or switches back on, Windows is usually receiving a workplace, school, mobile-device-management (MDM), or local Group Policy setting. On a managed computer, only the administrator may be able to change it.

Disabling optional data does not stop every diagnostic transmission. Required diagnostic data continues to be sent, while Microsoft says Windows remains secure and operates normally with the required baseline.

What the setting controls

Windows 11 has two practical diagnostic-data choices: the required baseline and optional diagnostic data. The required baseline is necessary for Microsoft to keep Windows reliable, secure, compatible, and up to date. Optional data gives Microsoft additional information for troubleshooting and product improvement.

Optional diagnostic data can include information about websites browsed, device activity, enhanced error reporting, and some crash-dump data collected with additional permissions. Microsoft also describes categories such as the operating-system name, version, build and locale; timings from device setup; and service-responsiveness details including latency, success indicators and error codes.

Choosing the required-only option narrows what is sent; it is not a zero-data mode. Microsoft states that a device using required diagnostic data remains secure and continues to operate normally.

Turn off optional diagnostic data in Settings

  1. Open the Start menu and select Settings. You can also press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Privacy & security in the left navigation.
  3. Open Diagnostics & feedback.
  4. Under the diagnostic-data choice, select the option that sends only the required diagnostic data. Windows may label this as required diagnostic data or use wording that contrasts required and optional data.
  5. Close Settings. The selection should remain after you reopen the page.

The label and layout can vary slightly by Windows 11 release, but the path remains under Privacy & security and Diagnostics & feedback. There is no separate switch that can make required diagnostic data disappear.

Why the control is greyed out, missing, or keeps returning

Microsoft Support says that unavailable options can mean the device is managed by a workplace or organization. An administrator can restrict a user’s ability to change diagnostic-data controls. That management may come from a company, school, MDM enrollment, domain policy, or a local policy configured on a personally owned computer.

Signs that an organization controls the setting

  • A notice says that some settings are hidden or managed by your organization.
  • The required-only and optional choices are disabled.
  • The page is visible, but your selection reverses after a restart or after Windows checks for policy.
  • A work or school account appears under Windows account settings, even if you originally bought the PC yourself.
  • The PC is joined to an organization, enrolled in MDM, or connected to a corporate VPN and management software.

A “managed by your organization” message does not necessarily mean an administrator is watching your screen. It means Windows has received one or more configuration policies from an authority other than the normal Settings interface.

What an administrator can configure

In managed environments, the relevant controls are the Allow Diagnostic Data policy and the Configure telemetry opt-in setting user interface policy. Microsoft identifies the MDM equivalent as ConfigureTelemetryOptInSettingsUx. These controls can determine which diagnostic level is allowed and whether the user-facing choice is available.

Group Policy location

On editions that include the Local Group Policy Editor, the documented path is:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds > Configure telemetry opt-in setting user interface

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An administrator can use this policy to restrict the interface so users cannot change the diagnostic-data selection. A domain policy can also overwrite a local choice during a policy refresh, which explains why a setting may appear to turn itself back on.

MDM and workplace enrollment

Organizations that manage Windows through MDM can deploy ConfigureTelemetryOptInSettingsUx and related diagnostic-data policies. The policy may arrive automatically when the device is enrolled, joined to an organization, or signed in with a managed work or school account.

If the computer belongs to an employer or school, changing local settings is not a reliable solution. Ask the administrator whether the device is intentionally configured for optional diagnostic data and whether they can permit the required-only selection.

Check whether a personal PC is enrolled

A personally purchased computer can still carry an old workplace or school enrollment. Check the following locations without deleting anything:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
  2. Review every listed connection. Select an entry to see whether it is connected to an organization and whether management information is shown.
  3. Also inspect Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts for work or school accounts that may have been used to enroll the device.
  4. If you recognize an employer or school connection that should no longer manage the PC, contact that organization or follow its official unenrollment process before removing it.

Removing an account casually can disconnect work resources or violate an organization’s device policy. If you are unsure why an enrollment exists, document the account and ask the owner or your IT department first.

Inspect local Group Policy on a personally owned Pro, Enterprise, or Education PC

Windows 11 editions with the Local Group Policy Editor can reveal a local configuration that disables the control. Windows Home does not include that editor by default.

  1. Press Windows key + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds.
  3. Open Configure telemetry opt-in setting user interface.
  4. Record whether the policy is Enabled, Disabled, or Not configured. Do not change a setting on a work-managed computer without authorization.
  5. If this is your own PC and you deliberately configured the policy in the past, set it back to Not configured, select Apply, then OK.
  6. Restart Windows and revisit Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback.

If the policy returns to its previous state, another management source is applying it. A domain, MDM service, security baseline, or scheduled management check can overwrite local changes.

Required-only versus optional diagnostic data

Important version detail: “Enhanced diagnostic data”

If you are following an older Windows guide, you may see a reference to Enhanced diagnostic data. Microsoft says that setting is not available on Windows 11 or Windows Server 2022. It was replaced by policies that control the amount of optional diagnostic data sent.

Therefore, searching for the old Enhanced option, an older Control Panel page, or a legacy toggle will not restore the missing Windows 11 control. Use the current Settings page or the documented Group Policy and MDM controls instead.

What not to do

  • Do not assume stopping a Windows service disables diagnostic collection. The supported control planes are Settings, Group Policy, and MDM. A service stop may be temporary, may affect unrelated functions, and can be reversed by Windows or policy.
  • Do not delete an arbitrary registry value. Registry edits copied from unofficial guides can break policy processing and may not override an organization’s management system.
  • Do not remove work or school enrollment blindly. It can disconnect company resources, trigger compliance actions, or leave the device in an inconsistent state.
  • Do not confuse optional-data controls with advertising or location settings. Those are separate privacy controls and changing them will not unlock Diagnostics & feedback.

How to confirm the change

  1. Return to Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback.
  2. Verify that the required-only choice is selected and that no organization notice says the setting is restricted.
  3. Restart the PC, sign in normally, and check the page again. A choice that survives a restart on an unmanaged PC is usually being applied locally.
  4. If it changes after a policy refresh, reconnecting to a work account, or an MDM check-in, treat that as evidence of management rather than a Settings failure.

When to contact IT or the device owner

Contact the administrator when the page names an organization, the computer is domain-joined or MDM-enrolled, or a policy keeps replacing your selection. Provide the exact Windows 11 edition, the wording of the management notice, and the policy name if you found one. Ask whether the organization can set required-only diagnostic data or expose the user interface control.

For a second-hand or formerly managed PC, ask the previous owner to remove it from their organization’s management system. A local reset does not always remove cloud enrollment; the organization may need to retire the device from its management service.

Bottom line

Select the required-only diagnostic-data option at Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback. If that option is unavailable or keeps reverting, look for work or school enrollment and the documented Group Policy or MDM settings. On an organization-managed device, the administrator must change the policy. Required diagnostic data will still be sent, but Microsoft says Windows remains secure and fully operational with optional data disabled.
