To turn off NumLock on an ASUS laptop, use the key or key combination documented for your exact model, or toggle it through Windows On-Screen Keyboard. ASUS keyboard layouts differ, so there is no single shortcut that can be assumed to work on every laptop. If the numbers appear when you use letters, the built-in keyboard’s embedded keypad may be enabled; a touchpad NumberPad is a separate feature with its own setting.
Try the documented NumLock key for your laptop
- Check the keycaps. Look for
NumLk,Num Lock, or a combined marking such asIns/Num Lk. Key layouts and shortcuts vary, so confirm the combination in the manual for your exact ASUS model. ASUS’s legacy A1B notebook manual, for example, documentsFn+Ins NumLKto toggle its embedded keypad; that is a model-specific example, not a universal ASUS shortcut. See ASUS’s keyboard troubleshooting guidance. - Press the confirmed key or combination once. NumLock is a toggle. Test the keys that were entering numbers. If your keyboard has a NumLock indicator, check whether its state changes; indicator locations and designs vary.
Toggle NumLock with Windows On-Screen Keyboard
If you cannot identify the physical key, ASUS documents a Windows fallback. Open Run, enter osk, and press Enter to open On-Screen Keyboard. Select Options; if needed, check Turn on numeric key pad, then select NumLock. Test the affected keys afterward. Interface labels can differ somewhat between Windows versions. Tell keyboard NumLock apart from the touchpad NumberPad
Some ASUS touchpads can display a NumberPad. This is distinct from NumLock on the laptop keyboard. On supported devices, MyASUS includes a NumberPad Lock setting for the touchpad NumberPad; ASUS specifies that it does not control an external digital keyboard. Availability and requirements vary by model, and ASUS lists MyASUS, ASUS System Control Interface, and touchpad driver requirements in its MyASUS Device Settings FAQ (updated September 24, 2026).

If the problem involves another keyboard or persists
- External numeric keyboard: Check its own NumLock key. ASUS’s A1B manual describes an interaction between an external keyboard’s NumLock and the notebook’s embedded keypad, but that behavior should be treated as model-specific.
- Cannot find the right key: Use the support page or manual for the exact laptop model rather than trying an assumed Fn combination.
- Considering a BIOS option: Do not assume your laptop has a startup NumLock setting. An ASUS motherboard manual documents a Boot Up NumLock Status option, but that does not establish that the setting exists in ASUS laptop BIOS menus. Check your laptop’s own documentation before changing BIOS settings.
