Turn off Autoplay Next Episode in the Netflix profile you use. On a phone or tablet, open My Netflix, open your profile name, choose Manage Profiles, select the profile, and switch off Autoplay Next Episode. In a browser, open Account, select Profiles, choose the profile, open Playback settings, and switch off the same option.
That stops automatic episode-to-episode continuation, but it does not stop you from manually starting another episode. For a stronger boundary, also disable browsing previews, restrict the profile’s content, lock unrestricted profiles, and use your device’s screen-time controls when you need a fixed schedule.

Turn off automatic next-episode playback
Netflix stores playback choices per profile. Change the profile that you actually watch; changing a different profile will not alter the one used by your television, phone, tablet, or browser.

Stop trailers and clips from starting while you browse
Autoplaying episodes and autoplaying previews are separate controls. Disabling the first stops automatic continuation after an episode; disabling the second stops trailers or clips from starting as you move around the catalog.
Mobile app path
- Open Netflix and choose the profile to change.
- Tap My Netflix, then the profile name.
- Choose Manage Profiles and select the profile.
- Switch off Autoplay Previews.
Browser path
- Open the Netflix Account page.
- Select Profiles, then the profile.
- Open Playback settings.
- Switch off Autoplay Previews.
Preview autoplay is not available on every device. Netflix notes that iPads and some older televisions and TV streaming devices do not support the feature, so the preview switch may have no effect or may not appear there. The next-episode setting remains the relevant control for stopping automatic series continuation.
Check that the change reached your devices
Use the profile that you edited when testing. Start an episode and let it reach the end rather than pressing the next-episode button yourself. With the setting disabled, Netflix should not begin the following episode automatically. Browse several titles to check that previews no longer start on a device that supports preview autoplay.

If one device behaves differently, first switch profiles and return to the edited profile. A sign-out followed by a fresh sign-in is the next refresh step. These actions do not change the profile’s maturity, blocked-title, or lock settings; they only force the device to retrieve the current account preferences.
What Netflix can—and cannot—limit
Autoplay controls interrupt an automatic chain. They are not a daily allowance, a weekly quota, or a lockout after a chosen number of episodes. The following controls address different parts of the binge-watching loop.
| Control | What it changes | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Autoplay Next Episode | Stops the next episode from starting automatically when the current one ends. | Does not prevent a viewer from selecting another episode manually. |
| Autoplay Previews | Stops trailers or clips from starting automatically while browsing, where the device supports previews. | Does not stop playback after an episode has already been started. |
| “Are you still watching?” | Pauses to check whether someone is still watching after Netflix detects uninterrupted viewing. | Is not a user-selected daily time limit and does not enforce a bedtime or quota. |
| Maturity rating | Shows a profile only titles at or below the rating selected for that profile. | Does not measure viewing time. |
| Blocked titles | Removes specified titles from that profile. | Does not stop access to every other title or prevent manual viewing of permitted content. |
| Profile lock or PIN | Helps prevent someone from switching from a restricted profile to an unrestricted one. | Does not itself limit the length of a viewing session on the unlocked profile. |
How the inactivity prompt works
Netflix’s “Are you still watching?” check is automatic. On televisions and TV streaming devices, Netflix says it appears after three episodes and 90 minutes of uninterrupted watching. On other devices, it appears after three episodes in a row without using video-player controls. You can dismiss the message and continue, or turn off next-episode autoplay so that the chain stops before another episode begins.

The prompt is designed as an inactivity check, not as a personal schedule. Its threshold is fixed by Netflix rather than chosen by the account holder, and it is not a replacement for a device-level time limit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse profile controls for children and shared households
Autoplay settings are useful for anyone who wants a pause between episodes, but a household boundary often needs access controls as well. Apply restrictions to the profile that a child or other viewer uses, rather than relying on the adult profile’s playback preference.
Choose a Kids profile or set a maturity rating
A Kids profile is the simplest starting point for a child’s viewing area. For a standard profile, set an appropriate maturity rating. Netflix states that a maturity setting shows only titles at or below the selected rating for that profile. This limits the catalog available to that profile, independent of whether autoplay is on or off.

Block individual titles
Use blocked titles when a broad rating is not precise enough. Netflix says blocked titles are removed from the profile. This is useful for excluding a particular series or film while leaving other permitted content available.
Lock unrestricted profiles
Add a profile lock or PIN to profiles that should not be opened by another household member. Without an access barrier, a viewer can simply switch to a profile with fewer restrictions and continue watching. A lock does not set a viewing duration; it protects the boundary created by the restricted profile.
Set a hard schedule outside Netflix
Netflix’s documented account controls do not include a configurable daily or weekly viewing-duration timer. If the requirement is “stop after 60 minutes,” “allow viewing only before bedtime,” or “enforce a school-night schedule,” use the screen-time or parental-control feature built into the operating system, television, streaming device, or home network equipment.
Best Value
Configure that limit on the device the person actually uses. A restriction applied to a phone will not necessarily govern a separate television, and a television limit will not automatically govern a tablet. Check each viewing route in the household, then combine the device schedule with a Netflix profile lock so the viewer cannot bypass the intended profile simply by changing accounts.
For a softer boundary, leave the device unrestricted and rely on the episode break created by disabled next-episode autoplay. For a firm boundary, use both: Netflix controls reduce the temptation to continue, while the device control supplies the enforceable cutoff.
Choose the right combination
| Your goal | Netflix settings | Additional action |
|---|---|---|
| Pause before every new episode | Turn off Autoplay Next Episode. | Do nothing else unless manual continuation is also a concern. |
| Reduce stimulation while browsing | Turn off Autoplay Previews on supported devices. | On unsupported devices, use the next-episode setting and exit the app when finished. |
| Keep a child within an age-appropriate catalog | Use a Kids profile or set a maturity rating; block specific titles when necessary. | Lock adult or unrestricted profiles with a PIN. |
| Prevent switching to an unrestricted profile | Keep restrictions on the child’s or limited profile. | Add a profile lock/PIN to profiles that should not be opened. |
| Enforce a fixed number of minutes | Disable next-episode autoplay to create a stopping point. | Set a screen-time or parental-control schedule on every device used for Netflix. |
| Stop automatic playback everywhere possible | Disable both next-episode autoplay and preview autoplay for each relevant profile. | Refresh devices by changing profiles or signing out and in if an old preference remains. |
Troubleshoot settings that seem not to work
The next episode still starts
- Confirm that you edited the profile currently playing the series; settings are profile-specific.
- Check the setting from a browser under Account > Profiles > Playback settings if the mobile app view is unclear.
- Switch to another profile and return, then test again.
- Sign out and sign in on the device that ignored the change.
- Make sure you are testing automatic continuation, not pressing a visible “next episode” command yourself.
Previews still play while browsing
- Verify that Autoplay Previews, rather than only Autoplay Next Episode, is disabled.
- Confirm that the device supports preview autoplay. Netflix identifies iPads and some older TVs and TV streaming devices as exceptions.
- Refresh the profile on the device by switching profiles or signing out and in.
A child can still watch unrestricted material
- Check that the child is using the restricted profile, not an adult profile.
- Review the profile’s maturity rating and blocked-title list.
- Add or verify the PIN on profiles that should not be accessible.
- Apply device-level screen-time controls separately on phones, tablets, televisions, and streaming devices used in the home.
A practical anti-binge routine
- Start with the correct profile. Before changing anything, identify which profile is used for the viewing habit you want to change.
- Remove automatic continuation. Disable Autoplay Next Episode so the end of an episode becomes an intentional decision point.
- Quiet the catalog. Disable Autoplay Previews where the device supports it, reducing unsolicited trailers and clips during browsing.
- Protect household boundaries. Use a Kids profile or maturity rating, block unsuitable titles, and lock unrestricted profiles when children or shared devices are involved.
- Add a schedule when stopping must be enforced. Configure screen-time controls on each device rather than expecting Netflix’s inactivity prompt to act as a quota.
- Test every route. Check the television, phone, tablet, and browser separately, because a setting that has not refreshed on one device can make it appear that the account change failed.
Bottom line
Disabling Autoplay Next Episode is the direct way to stop Netflix from rolling automatically into another episode. Disable Autoplay Previews as a separate step if browsing trailers and clips are part of the problem. Neither setting creates a hard time cap: Netflix’s “Are you still watching?” prompt is an inactivity check, not a configurable quota. For children or shared households, combine profile-specific playback settings with maturity ratings, blocked titles, profile locks, and device-level screen-time controls.
