To disable Multi-Link Operation, open your router’s own app or web interface and turn off its MLO setting. The menu is not standardized: ASUS uses Wireless > MLO, eero uses Settings > Advanced networking > Wireless > Multi-link operation, and a TP-Link Archer BE550 Pro guide uses Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings. Use the instructions for your exact model and firmware, because a different Wi‑Fi 7 router may place the control elsewhere.
What turning off MLO does
Multi-Link Operation (MLO) is a Wi‑Fi 7 feature that lets a compatible client and router use more than one wireless link across available bands. Depending on the hardware and configuration, links can be used together or managed dynamically for throughput, latency or reliability. Disabling MLO changes the network back to the router’s non-MLO wireless behavior; it does not turn off Wi‑Fi, remove a band, or reset the router.

There is no universal “Wi‑Fi 7 MLO” switch. Manufacturers expose the feature through different interfaces, and some separate an MLO network profile from other Wi‑Fi 7 controls. The documented paths below therefore apply only to the named platforms and should not be treated as a generic instruction for every router.

Identify the exact platform
Find the model name and hardware revision on the router’s label or in its app. Also note the firmware version. Support for MLO, the wording of the setting and the effect on a mesh system can vary by model and firmware. A product family can contain several hardware revisions with different menus, so do not rely only on a search result for a similar-looking router.

Expect a short interruption
Changing wireless architecture can restart radios or the whole network. Save downloads, calls and smart-home setup work before applying the change. TP-Link’s Archer guide explicitly requires a router reboot for MLO setting changes. eero documents a reboot when MLO is enabled and does not explicitly state whether disabling it causes the same interruption, so follow the app’s prompt and wait for the network to settle.
Keep an alternative connection available
If possible, make the change from a device connected by Ethernet. A wired connection prevents you from being disconnected while the wireless settings restart. If you are using Wi‑Fi, remain close to the router and do not close the app or browser until it confirms completion. Keep the administrator password available; a normal Wi‑Fi password may not be enough to open the router’s management page.
Know what problem you are trying to solve
Common reasons to test with MLO off include an older client failing to join, repeated reconnects, trouble with a particular smart-home device, or a mesh configuration that does not behave as expected. The official instructions do not establish a general speed improvement from disabling MLO. Treat the change as a compatibility or troubleshooting test rather than a guaranteed performance upgrade.
Record your starting configuration
Before changing anything, write down the Wi‑Fi names, security mode, guest-network status and which devices are affected. If your router offers a configuration backup, create one according to its normal procedure. This makes it easier to return to the previous state if another wireless setting changes during the restart. Do not factory-reset the router just to find the MLO menu; a reset removes unrelated settings and is not required for this change.
Which menu should you use?
| Platform documented | Interface | Disable path | Reboot information | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ASUS Wi‑Fi 7 routers | Router web interface | Wireless > MLO, then turn off Enable MLO and apply | Apply the change; the cited ASUS instructions do not specify a universal reboot duration | Exact model and firmware support differ. AiMesh behavior and separate Wi‑Fi 7 controls must be considered. |
| eero systems | eero mobile app | Settings > Advanced networking > Wireless > Multi-link operation, then toggle off | eero says enabling MLO reboots the network and can take about two minutes; disable-specific behavior is not explicitly stated | MLO depends on supported eero hardware, current firmware and app versions, and is unavailable on eero Business networks. |
| TP-Link Archer BE550 Pro guide | Router web interface | Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings, then clear Enable MLO network and save | The guide says the router reboots for MLO setting changes to take effect | The cited path is for the Archer BE550 Pro guide; other Archer models may use different labels. |
The comparison matters because the interface determines how you apply the change. ASUS and TP-Link use browser-based administration in the documented examples, while eero puts the control in its mobile app. A reboot is explicit for TP-Link setting changes, and eero gives an approximate two-minute reboot time when MLO is enabled. ASUS’s cited instructions tell you to apply the change but do not promise a standard interruption length.
ASUS: disable MLO in the web interface
Step 1: Sign in
Connect to the ASUS router, preferably over Ethernet. Open a browser and sign in through the router’s LAN address or the ASUS router URL used by your model. If the page redirects to a cloud account or a local login, use the administrator account associated with that router.
Step 2: Open the global MLO page
In the administration interface, open Wireless > MLO. ASUS documents Enable MLO as the global control and says it is enabled by default in the documented interface. If you do not see the page, confirm that you are signed in to the correct router rather than an access point or a different node.
The Tool Desk

Clear or switch off Enable MLO, then select the page’s apply or save control. Keep the browser open until the router reports that the change is complete. Wireless clients may disconnect while the settings are applied. Wait for the router’s status lights and reconnect a test device before changing anything else.
Do not confuse MLO with the other ASUS controls
ASUS also documents an MLO control inside the main network profile at Network > Main network profile > Advanced Settings > Multi-Link Operation (MLO). In addition, a separate WiFi 7 mode control appears under Network > main network profile. These labels describe related but distinct settings. Turning off Wi‑Fi 7 mode is not automatically the same as disabling the MLO network profile, so use the control that matches your goal.

If your purpose is to stop the MLO SSID while retaining other Wi‑Fi 7 capabilities, use the MLO control rather than switching off Wi‑Fi 7 mode broadly. Conversely, if a support instruction for your exact firmware specifically asks you to change the profile-level option, follow that label and verify which network profile it affects. ASUS’s two documented locations are why copying a menu path from another firmware version can be misleading.
AiMesh considerations
ASUS says that when MLO is enabled on the primary router, a non-MLO Wi‑Fi 6E node will not broadcast a 6 GHz network. If you use AiMesh and need that node to provide 6 GHz service, ASUS identifies Wireless > MLO as the place to disable MLO. Check the support information for your exact model and firmware before changing a production mesh network.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAfter the change, inspect the AiMesh topology and each node’s radio status. A node can show as connected while advertising a different set of bands than before. Test from the location where you normally use the affected client, not only beside the primary router.
eero: turn off MLO in the app
Step 1: Open the wireless settings
Open the eero app and select Settings. Go to Advanced networking > Wireless. The exact screen appearance can vary with the app release, but the documented control is named Multi-link operation.
Step 2: Toggle Multi-link operation off
Choose Multi-link operation and switch the toggle off. Accept any confirmation shown by the app, then wait until all eeros return to an online state. Do not unplug an eero during this process or attempt to pair a new node while the network is restarting.
What the eero reboot notice means
eero’s support instructions state that enabling MLO reboots the network and that the reboot can take about two minutes. That statement is specifically about enabling the feature; the support text does not confirm the exact interruption caused by disabling it. Do not assume a fixed duration. Follow the on-screen status and test connectivity only after the app shows the network is ready.

Compatibility conditions that can hide the setting
The eero documentation lists supported eero hardware and minimum firmware and app requirements for MLO. It also says MLO is unavailable on eero Business networks. If Multi-link operation is missing, first verify the eero model, firmware, app version and network type rather than assuming the feature is permanently enabled. Update through the app’s normal controls, then reopen the settings screen.
Legacy-device effects
eero warns that WPA3 may be enabled on participating bands and that some legacy devices may be incompatible with MLO networks. If a device cannot connect while MLO is enabled, disabling MLO can be a practical compatibility test. Recheck the device after the network has fully restarted. If it still fails, record whether the problem affects one device or every client before changing security settings.
Because eero manages much of the network automatically, avoid trying to reproduce a missing toggle by creating a second SSID or manually splitting bands unless eero’s own documentation for your model directs you to do so. Those changes can introduce a separate troubleshooting problem.

TP-Link Archer: disable the MLO network
Step 1: Sign in to the router
Connect to the Archer router and open its web administration interface. Sign in with the router administrator account. If the router is in access-point mode or managed by another controller, the local page may not expose every wireless option.
Step 2: Find Wireless Settings
Open Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings. The Archer BE550 Pro user guide places the MLO control on this page. Read the page heading and model identifier before making a change, especially if you manage more than one Archer device.
Step 3: Clear the MLO option
Turn off or clear Enable MLO network, then save the setting. Do not substitute a control named Wi‑Fi 7, 6 GHz, smart connect or band steering unless the manual for your exact model says it controls MLO.
Step 4: Wait for the required reboot
The Archer guide says the router must reboot for MLO setting changes to take effect. Keep the router powered on during the restart. Reconnect only after the status indicators and the administration page show that the router is operational. A device that reconnects quickly may still be using a cached network state, so verify the setting in the router page as well.
Verify the model-specific instructions
The cited guide is for the Archer BE550 Pro. Other Archer models can use different firmware and menu labels, so open the guide for your exact model before changing a setting. If you cannot find Enable MLO network, do not substitute a Wi‑Fi 7, 6 GHz or band-steering switch without confirming what that control does.

Check the interface type
Some routers expose MLO only in an app, while others expose it only in the web interface. Try the manufacturer’s current app and the router’s browser-based administration page, using the account that owns or administers the network. A page viewed through a guest account may omit advanced wireless controls.
Confirm firmware and app eligibility
Install the current firmware offered for your exact hardware revision and update the management app through its normal app-store channel. Do not install firmware intended for another model. For eero, also confirm that the network is not an eero Business network, because the documented MLO control is unavailable there.
Look for a profile-level control
A manufacturer may place MLO inside a main-network profile instead of a global wireless page. ASUS documents both a global Wireless > MLO page and a main-network-profile MLO control. Read the label carefully so you change the intended SSID or profile. A profile-level switch may not affect guest or other separately configured networks.
Consult the exact manual
A missing option can mean that the model does not support user-controlled MLO, that the feature is managed automatically, or that the current firmware uses another name. Use the current official manual or support page for the model and firmware; do not infer a universal path from another brand’s instructions. If support confirms that the option is automatic, ask whether a firmware update or a supported compatibility mode is available instead of repeatedly resetting the router.

What changes after MLO is disabled?
Client connections
Devices may briefly disconnect and then reconnect using the router’s ordinary wireless network. A Wi‑Fi 7 client will no longer use the router’s MLO network profile while the feature is off. Older clients that had trouble joining an MLO network may connect normally, but that result depends on the device and security settings.
Some clients store separate profiles for similarly named networks. If a phone or laptop keeps trying an old entry, remove or forget only the obsolete profile and join the active SSID again. Do not delete every saved network unless you need to; doing so can create unnecessary setup work.
Mesh behavior
In a mesh system, the primary router’s MLO state can affect node radios and advertised bands. ASUS specifically documents a 6 GHz consequence for non-MLO Wi‑Fi 6E AiMesh nodes when MLO is enabled. Check the mesh status after the change instead of assuming every node kept the same radio configuration.
Security and band settings
Disabling MLO does not automatically mean that WPA3, 6 GHz, or Wi‑Fi 7 radio operation is disabled. Those are separate controls on many platforms. Review the security and band settings only if the connection problem remains, and change one setting at a time so you can identify the cause. eero’s warning about WPA3 and legacy clients is especially relevant when a device’s failure appears to be a security negotiation problem rather than an MLO problem.
How to verify the change
- Wait for the router or mesh app to report that the network is online.
- Reconnect a phone or computer to the normal Wi‑Fi name. If the device saved multiple network names, select the intended SSID rather than an old MLO-specific profile.
- Open the router’s wireless status page or app and confirm that the MLO control is visibly off.
- Test the device that prompted the change: load several sites, use the affected app or smart-home function, and move to the normal location where the problem occurred.
- Check other important clients, including printers, cameras and voice assistants, because a network restart can leave some devices waiting for manual reconnection.
- If you are comparing performance, use the same client, room, distance and workload before and after the change. Record results separately from the configuration status.
If the original problem remains, record the time, affected device, band or SSID shown by the client, and any router error message. That information is more useful to the manufacturer than simply reporting that “Wi‑Fi 7 is broken.”
Should you leave MLO off?
Leave it off when it resolves a specific compatibility or stability problem, when a required mesh node loses a needed band, or when your network contains clients that cannot reliably use the MLO configuration. Turn it back on if you need the feature and all important devices work correctly with it enabled.
These documented procedures describe configuration and compatibility behavior, not a universal performance result. Neither the ASUS, eero nor TP-Link material establishes that disabling MLO generally increases speed, reduces latency or improves coverage. If performance is your concern, compare the same client, location and workload before and after the change, and treat your own measurements as local results rather than a guarantee for other networks.
How to restore MLO
Use the same platform-specific path and switch the control back on: Wireless > MLO on ASUS, Settings > Advanced networking > Wireless > Multi-link operation in eero, or Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings > Enable MLO network on the documented Archer interface. Apply or save the change and allow any required restart to finish. If a device then fails to reconnect, forget the saved Wi‑Fi network on that device and join it again using the current network credentials.
Restore one setting at a time and check the network after each restart. If restoring MLO brings back the original failure, capture the affected client model, router firmware, security mode and the exact time of the failure before contacting the manufacturer.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I disable MLO on a Wi‑Fi 7 router?
Use the router’s own app or web interface. ASUS documents Wireless > MLO > Enable MLO; eero uses Settings > Advanced networking > Wireless > Multi-link operation; and the TP-Link Archer BE550 Pro guide uses Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings > Enable MLO network. Other models may use different menus.
Will turning off MLO make Wi‑Fi faster?
Not necessarily. The documented instructions do not establish a general speed, latency or coverage improvement from disabling MLO. Treat it as a compatibility or stability test and compare the same client, location and workload if performance is your concern.
Does disabling MLO turn off Wi‑Fi 7 or 6 GHz?
No, not automatically. MLO, Wi‑Fi 7 mode, 6 GHz and WPA3 can be separate controls. ASUS specifically documents distinct MLO and WiFi 7 mode settings. Check your model’s labels before changing another option.
Why is the MLO option missing in eero?
Verify that the eero hardware, firmware and app meet the documented requirements and that the network is not an eero Business network. MLO is unavailable on eero Business networks. If the option remains absent, consult the current support information for the exact model.
Will the router reboot when I turn MLO off?
TP-Link’s Archer guide says MLO setting changes require a router reboot. eero documents a reboot when MLO is enabled, but does not explicitly specify the interruption when it is disabled. ASUS’s cited instructions do not give a universal reboot duration. Follow the on-screen prompt and wait for the network to return online.
Can disabling MLO affect an ASUS AiMesh system?
It can change mesh radio behavior. ASUS says that when MLO is enabled on the primary router, a non-MLO Wi‑Fi 6E node will not broadcast a 6 GHz network, and identifies Wireless > MLO for disabling MLO. Check the exact model and firmware and inspect node status afterward.
Do I need to buy a new router or special cable to disable MLO?
No. The documented changes use the existing router’s administration page or app. An Ethernet connection can make the change safer by keeping your device connected during a wireless restart, but no special equipment is required.
The Bottom Line
Disable MLO only through the menu for your exact router and firmware. ASUS uses Wireless > MLO, eero uses its app’s Advanced networking > Wireless path, and the documented TP-Link Archer interface uses Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings. Expect a possible interruption, account for mesh and legacy-device effects, and verify the network after it returns online.
