How to Turn Off HDR When Netflix Looks Washed Out or Too Dark

If Netflix looks washed out or too dark, turn off HDR in the Netflix app if your device offers the setting. On phones and tablets, check My Netflix > Menu > App Settings > HDR Playback. On some TVs and streaming devices, look under Get Help > Video > HDR Off. If neither option appears, use your device’s own HDR and picture controls instead.

Turn off HDR in Netflix on a phone or tablet

  1. Try the playback controls first. While a title is playing, use Netflix’s in-video brightness control if it appears, and check the device’s screen brightness.
  2. Open the app setting. Select a profile, then go to My Netflix > Menu > App Settings.
  3. Turn off HDR Playback. Netflix says this control is available on supported mobile devices for eligible Premium plan members. It may not appear on every phone or tablet.

Netflix’s dark-video help page advises that a title that is not bright enough may require changing the device’s brightness level or HDR settings.

Turn off HDR on a TV or streaming device

  1. From the Netflix home screen, open Get Help. Depending on the interface, it may be under the profile icon at the top or at the bottom of a left-side menu.
  2. Choose Video, then select HDR Off if the option is available.

Some HDR-compatible TVs do not show this Netflix toggle. If it is missing, check the television or streaming device’s picture and HDR settings; menu names and paths vary by brand and model, so consult the maker’s instructions.

Check Windows settings if Netflix still looks wrong

First distinguish dark Netflix HDR video from other apps looking dark while Windows HDR is enabled. These are different problems and may use different controls.

If Netflix HDR video looks too dark

In Windows, check the Stream HDR video control. Microsoft also provides HDR video calibration for supported built-in displays; it can balance detail in bright and dark scenes and restore defaults. The calibration tool does not calibrate external displays. See Microsoft’s HDR settings guidance and built-in display calibration instructions.

If other apps look dark while HDR is on

Review Windows’ HDR/SDR brightness balance in HDR settings. Microsoft notes that some apps may not respond to a changed balance; close and restart the affected app after adjusting it. More troubleshooting is in Microsoft’s HDR settings guide.

Why the picture can look wrong—and what turning HDR off can do

HDR appearance depends on the display and its settings. Disabling HDR is a reasonable troubleshooting step when the setting is available, but it is not a universal cure for washed-out color or dark scenes. If the picture remains poor, check the display’s brightness, picture mode, and HDR controls, then seek guidance for the exact model.

Windows HDR playback also has eligibility requirements. Netflix lists Windows 11, a supported browser or Windows app, compatible graphics hardware, an HDR-capable setup, a supported plan and playback quality, and a steady internet connection of at least 15 megabits per second. That connection threshold is an HDR playback requirement, not a brightness remedy; requirements alone do not identify why a particular image looks wrong. See Netflix’s Windows computer and tablet guidance.

Do cable or port checks solve washed-out HDR?

They can help diagnose whether a setup supports 4K/HDR playback, but they are not an established fix for poor brightness or tone mapping. Netflix says the device, cable, port, and plan affect whether 4K/HDR is available; if part of the setup lacks support, playback uses the highest quality available for that setup. Its video quality guidance does not say that buying a new cable or device corrects a washed-out image.
