To stop Google from using your account activity to personalize ads, open Google My Ad Center, switch Personalized ads to Off, and confirm. Your signed-in choice follows your Google account across devices where you are signed in. Ads do not disappear; Google says they can still use contextual signals such as the page topic, time of day, location, a recent video, or an active search. For broader limits, also review Android’s Ads privacy controls, Chrome’s ad and cookie settings, and—on iPhone—both app-tracking permission and Apple’s separate advertising switch.
The fastest way to turn off Google personalized ads
- Open My Ad Center while signed in to the Google account you use for Google services.
- Find Personalized ads and select Off.
- Read the confirmation message and confirm the change.
Google says this disables the use of saved information for personalized advertising on Google services. Customized topics and brands associated with your ad profile are deleted. You may still see advertisements, but they are selected using contextual information rather than a profile built from your activity. The setting applies to Google services on devices where that account is signed in; it is not a universal switch for every advertising company or every website.

If you use Google while signed out, use the separate Ads Settings controls for Search, YouTube, and the Web (partner sites). Those choices are local to the browser or device where you make them, so they do not automatically follow you to another device.

Turn off personalization in Google My Ad Center
For a signed-in Google account
- Open My Ad Center and verify that the account shown is the one you want to change.
- Select Off beside Personalized ads.
- Confirm when Google asks you to verify the choice.
The account-level switch is the primary control for signed-in users. Google says it stops saved information from being used to personalize ads on Google services and removes the customized topics and brands that were shown in your ad profile. Because the decision is tied to the account, the setting can apply on another phone or computer after you sign in to that same account.
Refine individual topics and sensitive categories
My Ad Center also lets you review individual ad topics and sensitive topics. Use these controls when you want to keep personalization generally enabled but reduce a particular subject, or when you want to inspect what Google believes is relevant to you. You can review them before switching personalization off or afterward for additional control. Turning the main switch off is broader: it removes the customized topic and brand profile rather than merely reducing selected categories.
What happens to the ads you see
Google does not promise an ad-free experience. Context can still influence an ad, including the time of day, the topic of the page, your location, a recently watched video, or a search you are actively performing. These signals describe the current situation rather than relying on a saved advertising profile. A contextual ad can therefore look relevant even after personalization is disabled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChange Google’s settings when you are signed out
Signed-out controls are separate because Google cannot apply an account-wide preference when no account is active. In Google’s Ads Settings, open the relevant section for:
- Search, for ads shown with Google searches.
- YouTube, for ads shown around YouTube activity.
- Web, for Google ads on partner sites.
In each section, switch the personalized-ads option off and confirm. Repeat the process for every section you want to limit. Google says a signed-out choice applies only to the browser or device where you make it. Clearing browser data, using a different browser profile, or moving to another device can leave that environment with its own setting. If you later sign in, the signed-in account preference becomes the relevant control for Google services.
When signed-out controls are the right choice
Use them on a shared computer, on a device where you do not want to sign in, or when you regularly browse Google services without an account. They do not control ads delivered by non-Google platforms, and they do not replace the Android, Chrome, or iPhone controls described below.

Limit ad signals on Android
Android’s device-level controls are in addition to My Ad Center. On current Android guidance, use this path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google.
- Choose All services.
- Open Privacy & security.
- Tap Ads, then Ads privacy.
You will see separate switches rather than one master “no ads” button. Turn off the mechanisms you do not want to use.
Ad topics
Android can infer advertising topics from how apps are used. Turning off Ad topics limits that topic-based mechanism. It does not remove advertisements from apps or websites, and it does not change every advertising system an app may use independently.
App-suggested ads
Android can allow app-suggested advertising information to be stored for use by later apps. Disable App-suggested ads if you do not want that Android feature contributing information to future ad selection. This setting addresses the Android mechanism; an app’s own advertising technology may have separate controls.
Ad measurement
Ad measurement controls a limited form of data sharing used to measure advertising outcomes. Turn it off to reduce that measurement pathway. Measurement is different from personalization: disabling it does not guarantee that an app will stop showing ads or that an ad cannot be selected using other signals.

My Ad Center governs Google account personalization on Google services. Android Ads privacy governs device-level topics, app-suggested information, and measurement. A complete reduction therefore requires checking both places. The labels and exact placement can vary by Android release and device manufacturer; if a menu is not visible, use the Settings search field for “Ads privacy” and verify that you are in Google’s privacy section rather than an individual app’s advertising page.

Reduce browser-based personalization in Chrome
Chrome has its own controls, independent of the Google Account switch. Open Chrome’s settings and review Privacy and security. Pay particular attention to the settings for third-party cookies and Chrome’s ad features.
Ad topics and site-suggested ads
Chrome notes that ad topics and site-suggested ads can be used to personalize content and advertising in the browser. Turn off the relevant options if you do not want Chrome contributing those signals. These switches reduce browser-based personalization; they do not block all advertising and do not govern ads delivered by other browsers, mobile apps, or sites that use their own systems.
Third-party cookies
Review the third-party-cookie setting in the same Privacy and security area. Cookie restrictions can reduce one method sites use to recognize a browser across different pages, but cookie behavior is only one part of ad technology. Turning cookies off can also affect logins, embedded media, shopping baskets, and other site functions. If a site stops working, restore the setting for that site or use its permitted exception rather than assuming every cookie must be enabled or disabled globally.
Chrome profiles and synchronization
Chrome settings belong to a browser profile. If you use multiple profiles, check each one. Browser controls also do not override My Ad Center, Android settings, an app’s own privacy menu, or an advertising network that is not operated by Google. Treat Chrome as one layer in a set of controls, not as an account-wide privacy switch.
Limit tracking on an iPhone
There are two different iPhone settings: Apple’s permission for cross-company app tracking and Apple’s own ad-personalization switch. They address different systems and should be reviewed separately.
Stop apps from requesting cross-app tracking permission
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Choose Tracking.
- Turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track.
Apple says this permission concerns tracking across other companies’ apps and websites for advertising or data-broker sharing. Turning off the request prevents new prompts. On the same screen, you can also disable tracking for individual apps that already have a permission choice. This setting is about cross-company tracking permission; it does not turn off every form of analytics, contextual advertising, or an app’s first-party use of information.

Turn off Apple’s personalized ads
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Choose Apple Advertising.
- Turn off Personalized Ads.
Apple cautions that this may make ads less relevant without reducing their number. The switch affects Apple’s advertising system, not Google’s account settings and not the tracking choices made by other companies’ apps. If your goal is to limit both Apple personalization and cross-app tracking, change both settings.
What these changes do—and what they cannot do
They reduce personalization, not necessarily ad volume
Turning off a personalized-ads switch changes how ads are selected. It does not remove the ad slots themselves. Google can still use contextual factors, and Apple explicitly says its setting may not reduce the number of ads. A page, video, or app can therefore continue to display a similar quantity of advertising.
They have defined boundaries
Google’s account toggle covers Google services and, where applicable, Google partner sites and apps. It does not control advertising delivered by non-Google platforms or by a website with its own ad system. Android and Chrome settings add device and browser limits, while iPhone settings address Apple’s permission framework and Apple’s own ads. None of these settings is a universal opt-out from the advertising industry.
They limit different kinds of information
- Google My Ad Center limits saved account information used for personalized Google ads.
- Android Ads privacy limits topics inferred from app use, app-suggested advertising information, and a measurement pathway.
- Chrome settings limit browser ad topics, site-suggested ads, and selected cookie behavior.
- iPhone Tracking limits permission for cross-company tracking, while Apple Advertising controls personalization in Apple’s ad system.
Because the signals differ, changing one control does not make the others redundant.

Use this order so you can verify each layer without confusing account, device, and browser settings:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Start with My Ad Center. Turn off Personalized ads for every Google account you actively use.
- Check signed-out Google settings. On browsers or shared devices where you are not signed in, turn off personalization separately for Search, YouTube, and Web.
- Review Android Ads privacy. Disable Ad topics, App-suggested ads, and Ad measurement according to your preference.
- Review every Chrome profile. Turn off ad topics and site-suggested ads and choose an appropriate third-party-cookie setting.
- On iPhone, change both systems. Disable Allow Apps to Request to Track, review existing app permissions, and turn off Apple Personalized Ads.
- Check individual apps and websites. Their own advertising or privacy settings can operate outside these platform controls.
After making changes, close and reopen affected apps or browser tabs if an old preference appears to persist. A previously loaded ad can remain visible because it was already selected before the setting changed; seeing that ad once is not proof that the new control failed.

Troubleshooting common situations
Ads still appear after Google personalization is off
This is expected. The setting removes personalized selection based on saved account information, not the ad placement. Contextual signals can still produce a relevant-looking ad. Confirm that My Ad Center shows Off and that you are viewing the same Google account you changed.
The setting changed on one device but not another
If you changed a signed-in account setting, verify that the second device is signed in to that exact account. If you made a signed-out change, repeat it on the other browser or device because signed-out choices are local. Also check whether the second device is using a different Chrome profile.
An Android menu is missing
Android menu names vary by release and manufacturer. Search Settings for Ads privacy, then follow the path through Google, All services, and Privacy & security when available. An app’s own advertising page is not a substitute for Android’s device-level controls.
An iPhone app still asks about tracking
Make sure Allow Apps to Request to Track is off under Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. You can also inspect the list of apps on that screen and disable any existing permission. This affects Apple’s tracking permission; it does not prevent every privacy notice or every type of data collection an app may perform.
A website breaks after cookie changes
Third-party-cookie restrictions can affect sign-in, embedded content, and other site functions. Restore the setting for that site or create the narrowest exception that fixes the problem. Keep Chrome’s ad-topic and site-suggested-ad controls separate from cookie troubleshooting so you do not re-enable more tracking than necessary.
Keeping the settings effective
Privacy controls can drift as you add accounts, browsers, apps, or devices. Recheck My Ad Center whenever you sign in with a new Google account. On shared computers, inspect each browser profile and repeat signed-out controls after clearing profile data. On Android, revisit Ads privacy after a major system update; on iPhone, review the Tracking app list after installing apps that request permission. These checks do not remove ads, but they keep each layer aligned with the amount of personalization and measurement you are willing to allow.
