Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo stop Google Meet from creating AI notes automatically, open meet.google.com → Settings → Meeting records, set Automatic note taking for all future meetings to Off, and select Save. That changes meetings you host in the future. A scheduled event, an active call, transcripts, recordings, and the in-call Ask Gemini panel use separate controls, so check the matching section below if you want to stop more than automatic notes.
The fastest way to troubleshoot a “summary” that keeps appearing is to identify the artifact first. An AI notes document, a transcript, a recording, and an Ask Gemini response can all appear after or during a meeting, but disabling one does not disable the others. The control owner also matters: a host can change more than a regular guest, and an administrator’s Workspace policy can override an individual preference.

Turning off automatic notes therefore does not automatically turn off a transcript, a recording, or another attendee’s use of Ask Gemini. Think in three dimensions when choosing a control:

- Control owner: you as organizer, a host or co-host, or an administrator applying an organization policy.
- Feature type: AI notes, a transcript, a recording, or live Ask Gemini assistance.
Those distinctions explain why a single Off setting may appear to work while a different post-call file still arrives.
Turn off automatic AI notes for every future meeting you host
This is the broadest user-level setting. It prevents Take notes for me from being added automatically to future events that you host; it does not remove notes already generated and does not govern meetings organized by someone else.
- On a computer, go to meet.google.com and sign in to the account that hosts the meetings.
- Open Settings.
- Select Meeting records.
- Under Automatic note taking for all future meetings, select Off.
- Select Save.
Meet may offer other automatic choices in this area, such as enabling notes for all scheduled meetings you host or only meetings with three or more guests. Choose Off if you do not want Meet to add notes automatically under any of those conditions. This preference is about meetings for which your account is the host; it is not a way to suppress notes selected by another organizer.

A work or school administrator can apply a policy that prevents individual users from changing the setting. In that case, the control may be locked, missing, or revert after you change it. Ask your Workspace administrator to review the current Google Workspace Admin Help documentation for the organization-wide policy. The exact Admin console path depends on Google’s current administrator interface and your edition, so do not rely on an old community click path.
There is no personal workaround for an enforced organization setting. An administrator may need to change the policy, and the available choice can depend on the Workspace edition. If you are testing the setting, confirm that you are signed in to the same account that owns the meeting rather than a personal account in another browser profile.
Disable notes for one scheduled Calendar event
Use this route when you want automatic notes off for one meeting but still want your general preference for other meetings. You must be the event’s host or organizer.
- Open Google Calendar and edit the event.
- Add a Google Meet call or open the event’s existing Google Meet video call options.
- Open Meeting records.
- Clear Take notes with Gemini.
- Save the event.
Before joining, Meet’s green room indicates whether notes are enabled. That notification is informational: once someone has joined the call, you cannot change the event’s note setting from the pre-meeting notice. If notes are already running, use the in-call control instead.

Stop notes that are already running in a call
Changing the future-meeting preference does not stop a note-taking session that has begun. In the meeting, open the Take notes for me control and choose Stop taking notes.
Google says the organizer and internal participants can start or stop note-taking. When Host Management is enabled, only the meeting hosts can turn it on or off; in practice, that means the organizer, hosts, and co-hosts with the required permissions. Google’s Meet Help wording is: “If Host Management is turned on in Meet, only meeting hosts can turn ‘Take notes for me’ on or off.”
If you are a guest
If the stop option is not available, you cannot override the host’s permission. Ask the organizer or a co-host to select Take notes for me → Stop taking notes. Participants are notified when note-taking starts, so you can raise the request when that notice appears.
Stopping the feature ends the active note-taking process; it is not the same as deleting a document that may already have been created. If the meeting is sensitive, ask the host to confirm both that note-taking has stopped and who will manage any resulting file.
Turn off transcripts and recordings separately
Transcripts and recordings are independent meeting records. A meeting can have notes turned off while a transcript or recording is still enabled.
Review the event’s Meeting records
For a meeting you host, open the event’s Meeting records settings and turn off Transcribe the meeting and recording where those options are shown. If the event is already in progress, use the corresponding transcript or recording controls in the meeting when available.
Hosts can configure some records to start automatically. Availability, default behavior, and the labels you see depend on your Google Workspace edition and organization policy. Google’s documented transcript behavior reviewed for this guide is presented on an Android help page; if you are on a computer and the labels differ, follow the current desktop Meet instructions shown for your account rather than assuming the Android menu is identical.
What this does not change
Turning off transcription does not delete an existing transcript. Turning off recording does not erase a recording that has already been saved. Treat each existing file as a separate Drive or Calendar item and manage it using its own sharing and deletion controls.

If your goal is “no post-call record,” check all three record types before the meeting: notes, transcription, and recording. A successful change to one checkbox is not proof that the other two are off. Also distinguish a live Ask Gemini answer from a saved transcript or recording; it has its own host control.
Turn off Ask Gemini during the meeting
Ask Gemini is the live, in-call assistant. It is separate from the post-meeting notes document created by Take notes for me.
Host: disable it for everyone
During the call, use the meeting’s Ask Gemini controls and choose the option to turn the feature off for everyone. The host controls whether participants can use Ask Gemini. The exact button placement can vary with Meet’s current layout and your Workspace edition, so use the label Ask Gemini rather than looking for the notes control.
Participant: change only your own access
If you are not the host, ask the host to disable Ask Gemini for the meeting. Turning off Smart features for your own Google account stops you from prompting Ask Gemini, but it does not stop another participant from using it. A personal Smart feature preference is therefore not a meeting-wide privacy switch.
Conversely, turning off Ask Gemini does not necessarily alter notes, transcripts, or recording settings. If the concern is a post-call document, review Meeting records rather than only the live assistant control.
Understand what happens to notes that already exist
When Meet creates notes, it can generate a Google Docs notes document in the organizer’s Drive and place a link in an email or on the Calendar event. The host or co-host chooses sharing, so the people who can see the event are not necessarily the people who can open the document.
- A Calendar attachment or link does not by itself grant you permission to open the notes document.
- If you need access, request permission from the document owner or meeting organizer; if you should not have access, ask the owner to change the document’s sharing settings.
- Disabling automatic notes for future meetings is a prevention setting. Google’s user help does not establish that switching it off deletes documents already created, so do not expect existing notes to disappear automatically.
Remove an existing notes document
Find the notes document in the organizer’s Drive or through the link attached to the Calendar event. Only someone with the necessary Drive permission can delete it or change its sharing. If you are not the owner, ask the organizer or document owner to remove it or restrict access.
Recommended Free Tools
The same principle applies to a transcript or recording: first identify the file, then use the owner’s Drive or Calendar permissions to manage it. A link remaining on an event does not prove that the feature is still running, and losing access to a link does not prove that the underlying file was deleted.

Choose the right control by scope
| Your goal | Scope | Control to use | Likely decision-maker |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prevent notes from being added automatically to meetings you will host | All future meetings you host | Meet → Settings → Meeting records → Automatic note taking for all future meetings → Off → Save | You, unless an administrator has locked the policy |
| Keep notes off one particular appointment | One scheduled event | Calendar event → Google Meet video call options → Meeting records → clear Take notes with Gemini | The event organizer or host |
| End note-taking immediately | Current call | Take notes for me → Stop taking notes | Organizer, host, or permitted co-host; Host Management can restrict this to hosts |
| Stop a text record | Current or scheduled meeting | Turn off Transcribe the meeting in the applicable Meeting records controls | Eligible host, subject to edition and policy |
| Stop video capture | Current or scheduled meeting | Turn off the meeting’s recording option or stop an active recording | Eligible host, subject to edition and policy |
| Prevent live AI questions for all attendees | Current call | Host’s Ask Gemini control to turn it off for everyone | Host |
Use the narrowest control that matches your goal. The future-meeting preference is efficient for repeated changes, the Calendar event setting is precise for one appointment, and the in-call control is the only relevant choice once note-taking has started. Guests should expect to involve the host whenever Host Management or participant permissions limit the control.

You turned off automatic notes, but a meeting still has notes
- Check whether the meeting was organized by another account. Your preference applies to meetings you host, not someone else’s meeting.
- Open the individual Calendar event and verify that Take notes with Gemini is cleared.
- Ask whether a host or co-host started Take notes for me manually during the call.
- Check whether what you are seeing is actually a transcript, recording, or Ask Gemini response. Each has a separate control.
- Confirm that the change was saved while signed in to the intended Workspace account and that an administrator has not reapplied a policy.
The setting changes back or cannot be edited
Your organization may enforce the feature through Workspace policy. Contact the administrator instead of repeatedly changing the personal setting.
You cannot stop notes during the call
Host Management or your participant role may prevent you from doing so. Ask the organizer, host, or co-host to stop it. Leaving the call does not establish that the notes document has been deleted.
You still see a post-call link
Determine what the link points to. A notes document, transcript, recording, or Calendar attachment can each remain after a feature is disabled. The owner’s Drive sharing permissions determine whether you can open or remove the file.
Ask Gemini is still available after you changed Smart features
That is expected when another attendee is using it. Your Smart feature preference controls your own prompts; only the host’s in-meeting control can disable Ask Gemini for everyone.
The menu labels do not match these steps
Meet’s controls can differ by device, Workspace edition, and organization policy. Look for the named feature—Meeting records, Take notes for me, Transcribe the meeting, or Ask Gemini—rather than assuming every platform uses the same menu path. For transcript settings in particular, use the current desktop instructions for a computer instead of copying an Android sequence.
Privacy and access checks before your next meeting
- For meetings you organize, review Meeting records in the Calendar event before sending the invitation.
- Look at the green-room notice before anyone joins to confirm whether note-taking is enabled.
- Tell participants when you start or stop notes, transcription, or recording, following your organization’s policies and applicable consent requirements.
- After the call, inspect the Calendar link and Drive sharing on any generated document instead of assuming that every attendee has access.
- If the meeting involves confidential material, verify the organization’s Workspace policy with an administrator; an individual toggle may not override it.
- When a guest reports that a record is still being created, ask which artifact they saw before changing settings. This avoids turning off a transcript when the actual issue is a notes document or Ask Gemini.
Quick decision guide
- If you want a permanent change for meetings you host, turn off Automatic note taking for all future meetings in Meet settings.
- If only one appointment needs different treatment, clear Take notes with Gemini in that Calendar event.
- If notes are already being taken, use Stop taking notes in the call, or ask the host to do it.
- If you want no written or video record, separately review transcription and recording.
- If you want no live AI assistance for anyone, have the host turn off Ask Gemini for the meeting.
- For files already created, manage the notes, transcript, or recording in Drive and Calendar according to its owner and sharing permissions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off automatic note-taking delete old Google Meet summaries?
No deletion is established by the user setting. It prevents automatic notes for future meetings you host; existing notes documents remain separate Drive files until someone with the necessary permission manages them.
Can a participant stop Take notes for me?
Only if the meeting’s permissions allow it. With Host Management enabled, hosts control the feature. If you cannot see Stop taking notes, ask the organizer, host, or co-host.
Best Value
Why did I get notes after setting the Meet preference to Off?
The meeting may have another organizer, the Calendar event may still have Take notes with Gemini selected, or a host may have started notes manually. It may also be a transcript, recording, or Ask Gemini response rather than an AI notes document.
Does turning off Ask Gemini stop meeting notes?
No. Ask Gemini is the live in-call assistant. Take notes for me, transcription, and recording have separate controls.
Can I disable Ask Gemini just for myself?
Turning off Smart features prevents you from prompting Ask Gemini, but it does not prevent another participant from using it. The host must turn it off for everyone.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why can I see a Calendar notes link but not open it?
The link does not automatically grant document access. The organizer or co-host controls sharing on the Google Docs file in Drive.
How do I stop a transcript or recording as well as AI notes?
Review the event’s Meeting records settings and disable Transcribe the meeting and recording separately, or use their in-call controls when available. Workspace edition and organization policy affect which options appear.
Can an administrator disable automatic notes for the whole organization?
An administrator can apply organization policy, which may lock or override the individual control. Ask the administrator to consult the current Google Workspace Admin Help documentation; the exact Admin console path varies.
The Bottom Line
Google Meet has no single “turn off summaries” switch. Set Automatic note taking for all future meetings to Off for meetings you host, clear Take notes with Gemini on an individual Calendar event when needed, and use Stop taking notes during an active call. Then review transcription, recording, and Ask Gemini separately. Existing files follow their own Drive ownership and sharing permissions, and an administrator’s policy can limit what you are able to change.
