If Google Maps is showing 3D buildings, overpasses, terrain, or raised structures while you drive, open profile picture or initial > Settings > Navigation > Map display > Map detail. Turn off 3D, or choose the standard/2D detail option when that is what your app shows. On Android, also switch off Raised buildings routes if structures still appear elevated.
That setting applies to mobile navigation. Google Maps on a computer uses separate 2D and 3D view controls. A floating preview card at the bottom of the map is a different interface element and needs to be dismissed separately.

First identify which immersive feature you are seeing
Google Maps uses several 3D-style interfaces, so the right fix depends on where the effect appears. The mobile setting called Map detail controls 3D details during an active driving route. It is not the same control as raised buildings, desktop Globe view, or a floating preview.
3D details during active navigation
On a phone, Google Maps can render buildings, overpasses, terrain, and related structures while turn-by-turn navigation is running. Google describes this as 3D details. The map may look tilted or visually busy compared with the ordinary flat map, and traffic or satellite layers may disappear while the route is active.

This is the feature most people mean when they say that Maps has become “immersive” while driving. It is a navigation-rendering choice, not a separate map application. You can change it before starting a route, then verify the result after navigation begins.
Raised buildings along a route
Android has a separate Raised buildings routes option. If you turn off 3D map detail but buildings along the route remain lifted, this separate setting is the likely cause. Disabling one does not necessarily disable the other.
Desktop 3D mode
The browser version of Google Maps does not use the phone’s Navigation settings. Its 3D mode is tied to satellite imagery, Globe view, and a 3D control. Returning to 2D mode produces the conventional flat map.

A floating immersive preview
If a card is floating at the bottom of the map before you start navigation, you may be looking at a preview rather than 3D route rendering. A Google Maps Community Product Expert suggested swiping the preview down to minimize it or tapping its X. That is community guidance, not a guaranteed Google setting on every device.
Turn off 3D navigation details on Android
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings, then Navigation.
- Under Map display, open Map detail.
- Turn off 3D, or select the ordinary/2D detail choice if your version presents a choice rather than a switch.
- Start or resume a route and check the map. The route should use the simpler display.
If structures are still raised, return to Settings > Navigation and turn off Raised buildings routes. This is an independent Android control, so changing Map detail does not necessarily change it.
Android availability limits
Google’s Android help page says the documented 3D-detail feature is available only in the United States, on certain device types, with Google Maps version 26.27 or later. It appears during active driving navigation on a mobile device and Android Auto. If your phone, region, or app version is outside those conditions, you may not see the Map detail option at all.
The version requirement refers to the Google Maps app, not the Android operating-system version. If the option is missing, update Maps through your normal app store first, then check the setting again. An update alone cannot make the feature appear in a country, city, or device category that Google does not support.

What changes when 3D is enabled
Google says traffic and satellite layers turn off during navigation when 3D details are enabled, although the layers selected on the home screen remain configured. In other words, your saved layer preference is not necessarily erased; the navigation screen temporarily changes what it renders. Turning off 3D removes that particular layer trade-off and returns the route to the standard rendering.
This matters if you rely on traffic colors, satellite context, or a less demanding map while driving. If traffic disappears only after a route starts, check whether 3D details are enabled before assuming that your traffic setting has been reset.
Turn off 3D navigation details on iPhone or iPad
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings.
- Choose Navigation.
- Under Map display, open Map detail.
- Turn off 3D, or choose the standard/2D detail option if it is displayed.
Run the route again to confirm the change. Google’s iOS documentation says 3D details appear during active driving navigation on the device and in CarPlay. The option may have no visible effect while you are simply panning around the map without an active driving route.
iPhone models and locations
Google lists iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, and iPhone 14 or later for this feature. It also limits availability to supported cities. An iPhone that does not meet the model or location criteria may never show the 3D option, so a missing switch does not necessarily indicate a problem.

The Map detail setting changes route rendering; it does not permanently remove your saved map-layer preferences. If you use CarPlay, make the change in the Google Maps settings on the paired iPhone, then begin a fresh route in CarPlay to check it.
iPad considerations
The navigation menu is reached through the profile picture or initial in the Google Maps app, just as on iPhone. However, the documented iOS eligibility list specifically names iPhone models and supported cities. If an iPad does not show the 3D control, do not treat that absence as evidence that the setting is hidden elsewhere.
Use the standard 2D view on desktop Google Maps
Mobile instructions do not control the desktop website. Google documents separate 2D and 3D modes in a browser. The 3D mode includes 3D buildings and other features, satellite imagery, and additional visual detail. Its 2D mode does not use 3D images or WebGL.

- Open Google Maps in a desktop browser.
- If the map is in satellite view, check whether Globe view is enabled and a 3D control is active. Those controls are how Google describes entering the desktop 3D mode.
- Choose the available 2D control to return to the flat map.
- If you need ordinary street navigation, switch back to the regular map layer after the 2D view is active.
The exact position of the control can vary with window size and interface updates. The important distinction is that desktop 2D mode is a view control, not the phone’s Navigation > Map display > Map detail setting.

Desktop 2D mode is also different from turning off a mobile route feature. You can use 2D while browsing, searching for places, or planning a route; it does not depend on whether a phone has 3D navigation eligibility. If you later select satellite and Globe view again, the desktop 3D control may become available again.
When raised buildings remain after 3D is off
On Android, inspect Raised buildings routes separately. Google’s help documentation treats it as its own navigation option, so disabling 3D details alone may leave route-side structures elevated.
Use this troubleshooting order:
- Confirm that Map detail > 3D is off.
- Close or restart the active route so the new rendering choice can load.
- Open Settings > Navigation again and turn off Raised buildings routes.
- Start a new driving route and look at a section where the raised structures were previously visible.
If the buildings are still raised after both controls are off, identify whether you are actually looking at a desktop map or a floating preview. Google’s documented separate raised-building switch is specifically an Android navigation option; it is not a universal control on every platform.
Why the 3D switch may be missing
- Unsupported region: Google’s Android documentation limits the feature to the United States, while iOS availability is limited to supported cities.
- Unsupported hardware: Android support is restricted to certain device types; Google’s iOS list names iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max and iPhone 14 or newer.
- Older app version: Google specifies Maps version 26.27 or later for the documented Android feature.
- No active route: The 3D details are displayed during active driving navigation, so the option’s effect may not be visible while browsing the map.
- Different interface element: A floating preview card or desktop 3D mode is controlled elsewhere.
- Platform mismatch: Android instructions do not add a control to the iPhone app, and phone settings do not change the desktop website.
Check the app version and device model before troubleshooting further. Labels can change as Google updates Maps, but the platform distinction remains: mobile navigation settings govern mobile route rendering, while desktop uses its own view controls.

Availability is not a promise that every eligible device will show the feature in every location. Google’s wording combines device, region or city, app-version, and active-navigation conditions. Meeting one condition does not override a missing condition elsewhere.
Performance behavior and automatic fallback
Google says that if 3D navigation causes performance problems such as overheating or a lost connection, Maps can switch to 2D for the remainder of that drive. After performance recovers, 3D may be available again on a later drive. This automatic fallback is not the same as permanently disabling the feature; use the Map detail setting if you want the standard view on every route.

A route that suddenly becomes flat may therefore be working as designed. The change does not prove that your preference was saved or that the 3D option was removed. Check Map detail after the drive if you want to make a deliberate, lasting choice.
Because 3D details can disable traffic and satellite layers during navigation, drivers who depend on live traffic colors may prefer the standard view even when their device supports 3D. That choice is made in Map detail rather than by changing the home-screen layer selection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf “immersive view” means a floating preview
A July 18, 2026 Google Maps Community question used the wording “How do I turn immersive view off?” and described an item at the bottom of the map. A Product Expert replied that the user could swipe down on the floating preview to minimize it or tap its X.
Try those gestures only when the unwanted element is visibly a floating preview card. They do not disable 3D buildings during turn-by-turn navigation. The same community reply suggested Settings > Video settings > Allow autoplay > Off to stop previews from playing automatically.
Because this advice comes from a community response rather than Google’s official help documentation, the label or behavior may differ by account, app build, or device. Treat it as a dismissal option for that card, not as a universal “immersive navigation” master switch. If there is no card, an X, or a Video settings menu, return to the Map detail instructions instead.

A practical checklist
- Look at when the effect appears: only during a driving route, while browsing a desktop map, or inside a floating card.
- On mobile, open Settings > Navigation > Map display > Map detail.
- Disable 3D or select standard/2D detail.
- On Android, disable Raised buildings routes separately if needed.
- On desktop, use the map’s 2D mode rather than mobile navigation settings.
- If the control is absent, compare your region, device, app version, and supported-city status with Google’s stated requirements.
- If the element is a floating preview, dismiss that card instead of changing navigation rendering.
- Start a new route after changing the setting so you can evaluate the result under the condition where 3D details are displayed.
Google Maps Help describes the navigation feature this way: “When you navigate, Maps can display 3D buildings, overpasses, terrain, and more.” Turning off the matching 3D or 2D-view control restores the simpler map without requiring an accessory, replacement part, or separate application.
Frequently asked questions
Does turning off 3D remove traffic information?
No. Google says traffic and satellite layers turn off during navigation when 3D details are enabled. Turning off 3D returns the route to standard rendering and avoids that particular 3D-related layer change. Your home-screen layer choices remain configured.
Best Value
Why do I still see buildings after switching off Map detail?
On Android, check the separate Raised buildings routes setting. Also make sure you are not viewing a desktop 3D map or a floating preview card, because those use different controls.
Can I turn off immersive navigation from Google Maps on my computer?
Use the desktop map’s 2D mode. The phone path under Navigation settings does not control the browser version. Desktop 2D mode has no 3D images or WebGL.
Why is there no 3D option on my phone?
Google limits availability by platform, device, region or city, app version, and active-navigation context. Android documentation specifies the United States, certain device types, and Maps version 26.27 or later. iOS documentation names iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max and iPhone 14 or later in supported cities.

Not necessarily. Google says Maps may switch to 2D for the rest of a drive when performance problems occur, then make 3D available again on a later drive. Use the Map detail setting to choose standard rendering deliberately.
Is the floating-preview fix an official Google setting?
No. Swiping down, tapping the X, and disabling autoplay were suggestions from a Google Maps Community Product Expert on July 18, 2026. They may not appear or behave identically on every account or app build.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I turn off Google Maps 3D navigation on Android?
Open Google Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, then go to Settings > Navigation > Map display > Map detail. Turn off 3D or choose the standard/2D option. If buildings remain raised, also turn off Raised buildings routes.
How do I return Google Maps to 2D on desktop?
In the desktop website, use the map’s 2D control instead of the 3D control. Desktop 3D is associated with satellite mode and Globe view; the mobile Navigation setting does not control it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why can’t I find the 3D setting?
The feature is restricted by device, location, app version, and platform. Google documents Android availability in the US on certain devices with Maps 26.27 or later, and iOS availability on specified iPhone models in supported cities.
How do I dismiss a floating immersive preview?
If the item is a floating card rather than route-rendered 3D, a Google Maps Community Product Expert suggested swiping it down or tapping its X. The advice is community guidance, not a universal official setting.
The Bottom Line
For 3D details during mobile driving navigation, use Settings > Navigation > Map display > Map detail and turn off 3D. Android users should separately disable Raised buildings routes if necessary. On desktop, choose 2D; for a floating preview, dismiss the card itself.
