How to Turn Off Gmail Conversation View on Desktop, Android, and iPhone

To stop Gmail from bundling replies into threads, turn off Conversation view. On a computer, open Settings > See all settings, choose Conversation view off, and save. On Android, use Settings > your account > General in the Gmail app. On iPhone or iPad, use Settings > Inbox > Inbox customizations.

The setting changes how messages are displayed, not the messages themselves. The platform-specific paths below show exactly where to find it, what changes afterward, and what to check if the control is missing.

What Gmail conversation view does

Gmail normally groups an email and its replies into one conversation. Instead of showing every received and sent message as a separate inbox row, Gmail displays a thread that contains the related messages, with the newest message at the bottom of that thread. Google describes the choice as deciding whether replies are grouped in conversations or whether each email appears separately in the inbox.

Conversation view is a display preference. Turning it off does not delete messages, remove labels, cancel a conversation, or stop people from replying. It changes the list and reading layout so that individual messages can be opened and managed independently.

In practical terms, the setting affects the way Gmail organizes the visible list. A sequence of messages with the same subject may occupy one row while conversation view is on. After you disable it, those messages can occupy separate rows, making the inbox longer but making each message easier to identify at a glance. This is useful when your priority is message-by-message triage rather than a compact discussion history.

When Gmail starts a new conversation

Even with conversation view enabled, Gmail can split a thread. Google documents two conditions: changing the subject line starts a new conversation, and a conversation breaks into a new conversation after it exceeds 100 emails. The 100-email figure is a product behavior limit, not a promise that every account will show exactly the same visual result in every interface.

These rules explain why two messages that look related may not always appear together when conversation view is on. Conversely, turning conversation view off does not change the subject lines or rewrite the existing conversation history; it simply displays the messages separately.

Why some people prefer separate messages

  • Individual messages are easier to scan when a thread contains many replies.
  • A reply can be opened, labeled, archived, or deleted without first expanding a long conversation.
  • Search results and inbox rows can feel more chronological when each email has its own line.
  • Automated notifications that share a subject are less likely to look like one ongoing discussion.
  • It is easier to identify exactly which message needs a response when several replies arrived close together.

The trade-off is that related replies no longer appear as one compact history in the inbox. If you rely on a single thread to follow a discussion, test the separate-message layout for a few days before deciding which view is faster for you. You can reverse the choice later by returning to the same setting and selecting the on option.

Conversation-view paths by device

Device Menu path Scope or note
Gmail on a computer Settings > See all settings > Conversation View > Conversation view off > Save Changes The Quick settings sidebar also has an Email Threading control.
Android Gmail app Menu > Settings > select the Gmail account > General > clear Conversation view The documented Gmail-account control is under the selected account.
iPhone or iPad Gmail app Menu > Settings > Inbox > Inbox customizations > turn Conversation view off iOS uses Inbox customizations rather than Android’s account-address path.

Interface labels can change as Gmail updates. If a label is not present, first confirm that you are using the instructions for the correct platform and that you are in the Gmail app on a phone or tablet, not a mobile browser.

Turn off conversation view in Gmail on a computer

Use the full Settings page

  1. Open Gmail in a desktop web browser.
  2. At the top right, select Settings, then select See all settings.
  3. Stay on the main settings page and scroll until you reach Conversation View.
  4. Select Conversation view off.
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Save Changes.

Gmail returns to your inbox after saving. Messages that previously appeared inside one conversation are presented as separate messages in the list. The account’s mail remains in place; only the presentation changes.

The save step is essential on the desktop site. Selecting the radio button or option changes the form, but Gmail does not finish applying the preference until you select Save Changes at the bottom. If you navigate away first, reopen settings and make the selection again.

Use Quick settings instead

If you do not want to open the complete settings page, select the gear-shaped Settings button and look in the Quick settings sidebar. Google places the conversation control under Email Threading. Choose the option that turns conversation view off. If the sidebar does not expose the control, use the full See all settings route, which is the dependable documented path.

The Quick settings route is a shortcut to the same display preference, not a separate conversation system. If you use multiple Gmail accounts in different browser tabs, check which account is active before changing the setting.

Confirm that the change took effect

  • Return to the inbox and look at a message sequence that previously contained replies.
  • Each message should have its own inbox row instead of one row representing the entire thread.
  • Open one message and check that it is not merely collapsed inside a conversation display.
  • Use a sequence with several replies for the test; a one-message email will look the same in either view.

If the inbox still looks grouped, repeat the full settings path and verify that Conversation view off is selected before saving. Browser windows can remain on an older page until Gmail finishes applying the change, so reload the inbox once after saving if the layout appears unchanged.

Turn off conversation view in the Gmail app on Android

For a Gmail account

  1. Open the Gmail app on your Android phone or tablet.
  2. Tap Menu, represented by the three-line button.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap the Gmail account whose inbox you want to change. This is the account address shown in the account list.
  5. Under General, clear the Conversation view checkbox.

The control is located inside the selected account’s settings. If you have several Google Accounts in the Gmail app, repeat the account-selection step for each inbox whose display you want to change. Do not assume that changing one address changes every address shown in the app.

Gmail app accounts that are not Gmail addresses

The Gmail app can also display mail from a non-Gmail account. Google documents a separate Email conversation view checkbox for those accounts under General settings. That label is different from the Gmail-address control. If you added an outside mail account and cannot find Conversation view, open the settings for that account and look for Email conversation view under the general settings area.

Understand Android setting scope

Android Gmail settings have two scopes. Google says options under general settings apply to all Google Accounts added to the Gmail app, while options inside a specific account apply only to that selected account. The conversation-view toggle described for Gmail accounts is under the selected account, so treat it as account-specific. A separate account can continue grouping messages until you change its own setting.

This distinction matters if the Gmail app combines a work address, a personal Gmail address, and an outside mailbox. Select the address first, then look for the control that belongs to that type of account. Do not substitute the non-Gmail checkbox for the Gmail-address control or assume that a general preference has changed every inbox.

The available documentation does not establish that changing the Android setting automatically synchronizes it with Gmail on a computer or an iPhone. Check each device or app where you read the account instead of assuming that one change has propagated everywhere.

Turn off conversation view on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. Tap Menu.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Under Inbox, tap Inbox customizations.
  5. Turn Conversation view off.

iOS puts the control in Inbox customizations. Do not follow Android instructions that tell you to tap an account address and then open General; that is a different app path. After switching the option off, return to the inbox and open a sequence of replies to confirm that messages now appear as separate rows.

If you use Gmail on both an iPhone and an iPad, verify the display on each app rather than assuming that the visible preference on one device proves the other device has changed. The official menu path for iPhone and iPad is the same, but interface wording can vary as the app is updated.

What changes after you disable the setting

Inbox and search presentation

Replies that Gmail previously represented as one conversation are listed as individual emails. Each row can be selected on its own for actions such as archiving, deleting, labeling, or marking as read. Opening one message no longer requires navigating through a combined thread to reach the item you want.

Separate display does not create duplicate mail. The messages already stored in the account are the same; Gmail is changing how it groups them for viewing. Labels, folders, stars, and other message-level properties remain associated with the individual emails to which they were applied.

Expect the inbox to contain more visible rows after the switch because one former thread may now occupy several lines. That is a presentation change, not a sudden increase in the number of messages delivered to the account. A long-running exchange can therefore look much larger even though no new copies were created.

Reply and follow-up nudges

Google notes that turning conversation view off can also hide suggestions, sometimes called nudges, that remind you to reply to or follow up on email. If those prompts are useful, disabling conversation view may reduce the reminders you see. This behavior is related to the display setting and is not an indication that messages or notifications have been disabled.

Long threads and changed subjects

Conversation view off is not required to split a thread when the subject changes or when a conversation exceeds 100 emails; Gmail already documents those as conditions that create a new conversation. With conversation view off, however, the inbox displays the messages separately regardless of whether they share a subject line.

Troubleshooting when the option is missing

You are on the wrong platform path

Desktop Gmail uses See all settings or the Quick settings > Email Threading sidebar. Android uses the selected account’s General section. iPhone and iPad use Inbox > Inbox customizations. A missing option often means instructions for another platform were followed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are using a mobile browser

The Android and iOS directions apply to the Gmail app. If Gmail is open in a phone browser, its menus may not match the app. Open the installed Gmail app and repeat the mobile steps, or use the computer instructions in a full desktop browser.

You have more than one account

On Android, return to Settings and tap the exact account address whose inbox is still grouped. The setting under one account does not establish the setting for another account. For non-Gmail accounts, look for the separately named Email conversation view checkbox.

The inbox did not visibly change

  1. Reopen the relevant settings path and verify that the off option is selected.
  2. Save the change on desktop; leaving the page without selecting Save Changes will not complete the desktop procedure.
  3. Return to the inbox and refresh it.
  4. Test with a thread that has several replies, not with a one-message email that could look the same in either view.
  5. Check another message sequence with the same subject to make sure you are not testing a conversation Gmail had already split because of a changed subject or the more-than-100-email limit.

The labels do not match these instructions

Google can revise menu wording or roll out interface changes at different times. Do not select an unrelated setting simply because its name looks similar. Check Gmail Help for the current instructions for your platform, and confirm whether you are in the Gmail app, a desktop browser, or a different mail client.

You expected the setting to follow you to another device

The cited instructions do not promise cross-device synchronization. If conversation view is off on a computer but on in the phone app, configure the phone app using its own platform path. Likewise, verify the specific account when more than one address is present.

You cannot tell whether the setting is off

Choose an exchange with multiple replies and compare the inbox before and after the change. The clearest sign is that each message receives its own row. Opening a message is not enough by itself, because a single-message email has no visible difference between the two layouts.

Should you leave conversation view on?

Keep conversation view on when a compact history is more important than seeing every message in the inbox. It is useful for ongoing discussions because replies stay together and the newest message is at the bottom of the thread.

Turn it off when separate inbox rows make triage easier, when shared subject lines cause unrelated notifications to look connected, or when you frequently need to act on one message without opening a long thread. There is no data-loss penalty for trying the other layout; you can return to the same setting and switch it back on.

Neither choice changes Gmail’s documented rules for starting a new conversation. Subject changes and conversations exceeding 100 emails can still produce separate conversations when grouping is enabled. The choice is primarily about whether Gmail groups messages that belong to the same conversation while you browse the inbox.

Frequently asked questions

Does turning off conversation view delete or resend email?

No. It changes the way Gmail groups messages for display. Existing mail remains in the account, and the setting does not send a new message.

Why are some replies still in a thread when conversation view is on?

Gmail can start a new conversation when the subject line changes or when a conversation exceeds 100 emails. Those are documented split conditions.

Is the Android setting the same for every account?

Not necessarily. The Gmail-account toggle is under the account address you select. Non-Gmail accounts use a separately named Email conversation view checkbox, and account-specific controls apply only to the selected account.

Where is the setting on an iPad?

In the Gmail app, tap Menu > Settings > Inbox > Inbox customizations, then turn off Conversation view.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Quick settings on a computer?

Yes. Open the gear-shaped Settings button and use the Email Threading control in the Quick settings sidebar. If it is not shown, use See all settings and the Conversation View section.

Will disabling conversation view remove reply nudges?

It can hide Gmail’s suggestions, or nudges, for messages to reply to or follow up on. The change affects those suggestions, not the underlying emails.

Does turning it off change the subject line or conversation rules?

No. It changes the display. Gmail can still create a new conversation when the subject changes or when a conversation exceeds 100 emails.

Do I need to change the setting on every device?

Do not assume that the preference automatically synchronizes between desktop, Android, and iPhone or iPad. If the layouts differ, use the instructions for each platform and verify the account selected in the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I want grouped conversations again?

Return to the same platform-specific setting and select or turn on Conversation view. On desktop, save the change before leaving the settings page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does turning off conversation view affect every Gmail account I use?

No universal cross-device or cross-account effect is established. On Android, apply the account-specific control to each Gmail address that needs separate messages; verify other devices independently.

What should I do if my mobile menus look different?

Confirm that you are using the Gmail app and the instructions for your platform. If labels still differ, consult the current Gmail Help instructions rather than choosing an unrelated setting.

Will disabling conversation view delete messages?

No. It changes how Gmail displays existing messages; it does not delete or resend them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where is Conversation view on Android for a non-Gmail account?

Open that account’s settings and look under General settings for the separately named Email conversation view checkbox.

How can I verify that the change worked?

Open an exchange with several replies and check the inbox. With conversation view off, each message should have its own row.

The Bottom Line

To list Gmail messages separately, turn off Conversation view using the path for your platform: desktop Settings > See all settings > Conversation View, Android Settings > selected account > General, or iPhone/iPad Settings > Inbox > Inbox customizations. Save the desktop change, verify with a multi-message exchange, and configure other accounts or devices separately when needed.
