How do I turn off Gemini in Chrome without turning off Gemini everywhere? On desktop Chrome, hide Gemini from the browser interface by opening More > Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome, then switching off the relevant Show Gemini preferences. If the toolbar button remains, right-click it and select Unpin Gemini. These controls remove or hide Gemini’s Chrome entry points; they do not turn off Gemini access in your Google Account. You can continue using the Gemini web app at gemini.google.com.
Choose what you actually want to turn off
“Turn off Gemini in Chrome” can mean three different changes. Chrome’s Gemini settings control the browser interface, a permission controls whether a new chat shares the current tab automatically, and a separate account setting controls Gemini Apps activity. Changing one does not automatically change the others.

For most people who simply do not want the Gemini button or prompts in Chrome, use the first two rows. If your concern is that a new chat can receive the page you are viewing, use the third row instead. If you want to change account activity handling, use the separate Gemini Apps Activity control; it is not required to hide the Chrome interface.

These instructions apply to the desktop Chrome experience described in Google’s “Gemini in Chrome” help. Labels and availability can change as the feature rolls out, and the exact menu is not verified here for every mobile Chrome version or operating system.

1. Open Chrome Settings
- Open Chrome on your computer.
- Select More, the three-dot menu in the browser window.
- Choose Settings.
This opens Chrome’s settings page. You do not need to change a Google Account activity setting to reach the browser controls.
2. Open Gemini in Chrome settings
- In Settings, choose AI innovations.
- Select Gemini in Chrome.
If you do not immediately see AI innovations, open the Settings menu first so the available categories are displayed. The Gemini entry may not be present on every installation because Google describes the feature as rolling out over time.
3. Turn off the “Show Gemini” preferences
Under Preferences, turn off the relevant options that begin with Show Gemini. Depending on your desktop setup, the available choices can include showing Gemini at the top of the browser and showing Gemini in the Mac menu bar or Windows system tray.
Choose every location you want hidden. Turning off one display preference does not necessarily remove another display location. For example, hiding the browser entry does not by itself change a system-tray or menu-bar option if that option is offered separately.
4. Unpin a toolbar icon that is still visible
- Find the Gemini icon in Chrome’s toolbar.
- Right-click the icon.
- Select Unpin Gemini.
Unpinning is a toolbar action, while the “Show Gemini” switches are Chrome preferences. Use both when you want the browser window free of Gemini entry points.

5. Confirm the result
- Check the top area of the Chrome window for the Gemini entry.
- Check the toolbar for a remaining pinned Gemini icon.
- On a Mac, check the menu bar if that display option was available.
- On Windows, check the system tray if that display option was available.
If one of these locations still shows Gemini, return to AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome and review each available “Show Gemini” preference, then use Unpin Gemini for the toolbar icon.
Keep using Gemini outside Chrome’s interface
Hiding or unpinning Gemini in Chrome does not remove the Gemini web app. Open gemini.google.com directly whenever you want to start a chat.

Use the Gemini web app directly
Enter gemini.google.com in Chrome’s address bar and load the site. This route remains separate from whether Gemini is displayed as a Chrome browser control.
Use Chrome’s optional @gemini shortcut
Google also documents a Chrome address-bar shortcut. Type @gemini in the address bar and select the Gemini chat shortcut. This is a site-search shortcut, not the same thing as the Gemini toolbar control.
The @gemini shortcut can be deactivated independently in Chrome Settings. If you want to preserve this quick route, leave the shortcut enabled even after hiding Gemini’s other Chrome interface elements. If you deactivate it, the direct web address remains available.

Stop Chrome from sharing the current tab by default
Some readers do not want to hide Gemini; they want to prevent a new chat from automatically receiving the page currently open in Chrome. That is a different control.
- Open More > Settings in desktop Chrome.
- Choose AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome.
- Open the Permissions section.
- Turn off Share current tab by default.
With this preference off, the default sharing behavior changes for a new chat. It does not hide the Gemini icon, remove the Gemini toolbar entry, or disable Gemini itself. Treat it as a sharing-default setting rather than an on/off switch for the feature.
When this is the right setting
- You want the Gemini interface available but do not want the current page included automatically in a new chat.
- You prefer to decide separately when a tab is shared.
- You are troubleshooting unexpected tab context while leaving Gemini enabled.
When this is not enough
If your objective is to remove Gemini’s visible controls, changing tab-sharing permissions will not accomplish it. Use the “Show Gemini” preferences and the toolbar’s Unpin Gemini action instead.
Do not confuse Chrome controls with Gemini Apps Activity
Gemini Apps Activity is an account-level setting. It is separate from Chrome’s Gemini in Chrome page and is not required to hide or unpin the browser interface.
Changing the Chrome preferences affects where Gemini appears in the browser. Changing Gemini Apps Activity affects the account activity setting. Neither change should be treated as a substitute for the other:

- To hide Gemini in Chrome, stay in Chrome Settings and use the “Show Gemini” controls.
- To change whether Gemini Apps activity is handled at the account level, use the Gemini Apps Activity setting.
- To change automatic tab sharing, use Share current tab by default under Chrome’s Gemini permissions.
This separation lets you, for example, remove the visible Chrome button while retaining the Gemini web app, or keep the button while changing the default tab-sharing behavior.

A missing AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome entry does not necessarily mean the setting is hidden behind another universal switch. Google states that Gemini in Chrome is rolling out over time, so it may not be available in every country or territory yet.
Check rollout and account eligibility
Feature availability can vary by country or territory and by account eligibility. If another Chrome installation shows Gemini but yours does not, that difference can be caused by rollout status rather than a mistake in the steps.
Check whether an organization manages Chrome
A managed organization can disable access to Gemini in Chrome. On a work or school computer, administrator policy may remove the setting or make it unavailable. The cited Chrome help does not provide a universal workaround for an administrator-managed block.

The documented path is for desktop Chrome. Do not assume that the same labels, locations, or controls exist in every mobile Chrome release. The feature’s rollout also means that labels and availability can change over time.
Use the web app when Chrome controls are unavailable
If Gemini in Chrome is not offered but you still have access to Gemini, use gemini.google.com directly. This preserves a separate way to use Gemini without depending on a browser-interface control that may not be enabled for your account or region.
Pick the right change for common situations
“I only want the Gemini icon gone.”
Open AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome, turn off the applicable “Show Gemini” preferences, then right-click the toolbar icon and choose Unpin Gemini if it remains.
“I do not want Chrome to share the page automatically.”
Leave Gemini available, but turn off Share current tab by default under Permissions. This changes the default sharing behavior without hiding Gemini.

“I want to stop Gemini activity on my account.”
Use the separate Gemini Apps Activity account setting. Do not expect the Chrome “Show Gemini” switches to change that account-level control.
“I want Gemini available, just not as a Chrome control.”
Hide the Chrome interface and keep using gemini.google.com. Leave the @gemini site shortcut enabled if you want to open the chat from Chrome’s address bar.
“I cannot find any Gemini setting.”
Consider rollout status, country or territory availability, account eligibility, and administrator management. The documented instructions do not establish a universal fix for a missing or blocked menu.
How to restore Gemini in Chrome later
The changes are preferences rather than a permanent account deletion. To restore a hidden Chrome entry, return to More > Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome and turn on the relevant “Show Gemini” options that you previously disabled. If you removed the toolbar button, use the available Chrome control to pin Gemini again. If you turned off Share current tab by default, return to Permissions and enable it only if you want that behavior.

Restoring a Chrome preference does not alter Gemini Apps Activity. That account setting remains a separate decision.
