You can, however, steer its communication: select the Concise or Formal style, create a custom style with explicit neutral-language rules, set an account-wide response preference, add project-specific instructions, or correct a single reply in chat. These controls shape tone rather than promise perfect suppression in every response.
What you can control
Anthropic’s documented personalization controls change how Claude communicates. They are useful for requests such as “make Claude less emotional,” “stop sounding affectionate,” or “use neutral, direct language.” The controls operate at different scopes, so the right choice depends on whether you want the preference everywhere or only in one conversation.

Anthropic’s help documentation describes these as ways to customize communication. It does not establish a guaranteed “emotional language off” mode, so treat your wording as a steering instruction and review important outputs.

Use Concise or Formal as the quickest adjustment
The built-in styles are the fastest way to reduce conversational warmth without writing a long instruction.

- Open Claude and start a new message or conversation.
- Open the Search and tools menu.
- Choose Use style.
- Select Concise or Formal.
Anthropic lists four preset styles: Normal, Concise, Formal, and Explanatory. Concise is a practical starting point when you want short, task-focused answers. Formal is more suitable when you also want a professional register. The style selection applies to new messages, edits, and retries, so changing it affects those response actions rather than only the next unsent prompt.
These presets are broad tone controls. They do not specifically define every phrase Claude should avoid. If Claude still uses terms of endearment, statements of personal attachment, or relationship framing, move to a custom style or an instruction with explicit exclusions.
Create a custom style with neutral-language rules
A custom style lets you describe the communication behavior you want instead of relying on a general preset.

- Open the style selector from Search and tools.
- Select Create & edit styles.
- Choose the option to create a style.
- Either provide a writing sample that demonstrates your preferred voice or describe the style in words.
- Use the advanced custom-instructions option when you need direct rules.
- Save the style, then select it before sending the messages that should use it.
Anthropic documents both a writing-sample method and a descriptive method. A sample can show sentence length and formatting, but direct instructions are more precise when the problem is a specific type of language.
A practical custom instruction
Paste a version of the following into the custom-instructions field:
Use neutral, direct language. Avoid emotional or relational phrasing, terms of endearment, and statements implying personal attachment. Do not describe yourself as caring, proud, excited, worried, or emotionally affected. Focus on the task, evidence, assumptions, and next steps. Do not address me with affectionate nicknames. If a social phrase is unnecessary, omit it.This is an editorial instruction, not a quoted Anthropic preset. It uses specific positive and negative guidance so Claude can distinguish a factual answer from a socially framed one.

Make the rule fit your use case
“No emotional language” can mean different things. Add only the restrictions you actually need.
- Technical work: Ask for facts, commands, assumptions, errors, and verification steps; prohibit encouragement and personal reactions.
- Business writing: Request a professional, impersonal voice and prohibit flattery, endearments, and claims of a relationship with the reader.
- Editing: Tell Claude to preserve the source’s intended emotion when editing someone else’s copy, while keeping its own explanations neutral.
- Accessibility or literal communication: Ask for explicit statements rather than implied empathy, reassurance, or social cues.
Do not instruct Claude to remove necessary content from a document merely because it contains emotion. For example, an analysis of a crisis statement may need to quote emotional wording. Specify that the restriction applies to Claude’s conversational framing, not to text it is asked to analyze or reproduce.
Set an account-wide preference
Use profile response preferences when you want the same neutral approach considered across your conversations.
- Open the profile menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Find What preferences should Claude consider in responses?
- Add a concise instruction about neutral, direct wording.
- Save the setting and begin a new conversation to check the result.
Anthropic says profile preferences apply across conversations. A suitable entry is:
Prefer neutral, direct, professional wording. Avoid emotional or relational language, terms of endearment, and statements that imply personal attachment. Prioritize facts, reasoning, and actionable steps.Profile preferences are broad. If a particular task needs a different voice, give a more specific instruction in that conversation or use a project instruction that explains the exception.

Project instructions are useful when one body of work needs a controlled voice but your other chats do not.

- Open the relevant project.
- Open the project’s instructions or configuration area.
- Add the neutral-language rule.
- Save it, then send messages within that project.
Anthropic’s project documentation describes instructions as guidance for chats in that project. The cited help page describes projects as available on paid Claude plans, so the exact availability can depend on your account and the current product rollout.
Example project instruction:
Within this project, write as a neutral technical analyst. Do not use endearments, emotional reassurance, or relationship language. State conclusions, evidence, uncertainty, and next actions directly. Keep quoted source material unchanged unless I ask you to edit it.A project rule is narrower than a profile preference. That makes it appropriate for a client report, codebase, legal-document workflow, or other context where a consistent professional register matters.
Correct a single conversation in chat
For a one-off request, tell Claude exactly what to change in the conversation itself. Anthropic’s prompt-design guidance supports explicit English instructions and recommends specifying what you want.
Use a short correction such as:
For the rest of this conversation, use neutral, direct language. Do not use affectionate terms, emotional reassurance, or statements implying a personal relationship. Answer the question first and omit conversational filler.If one response drifts, identify the behavior rather than saying only “be less emotional”:
Rewrite your previous answer. Remove “I’m happy to help,” “I understand how you feel,” and any similar social framing. Keep the factual content and present it as numbered steps.Claude can follow instructions in English, but an instruction is not a permanent product-level block. Re-state it when the context changes, when you start a new conversation, or when a later request calls for a different voice.
Choose the right scope

Use the narrowest control that solves the problem. A project instruction avoids changing unrelated chats; a profile preference avoids repeating the same rule in every conversation; a one-off message is best when the request is temporary.

Write instructions that are easier to follow
Name the unwanted behavior
“Sound normal” is ambiguous. List the categories that bother you: endearments, emotional reassurance, declarations of care, claims of pride or excitement, apologies that add no information, and statements implying a personal bond. You can also prohibit direct address such as “friend” or “dear” if those forms are the issue.
State the replacement behavior
Tell Claude what to do instead: lead with the answer, use headings or numbered steps, identify uncertainty, and focus on facts and actions. A replacement rule gives the model a usable pattern instead of only a list of negatives.
Separate tone from content
If you want neutral explanations but still need emotional language in quoted material, say so. This prevents a style instruction from damaging a translation, literary analysis, customer-support draft, or other task where the source’s tone is part of the content.
Define the output format
Format constraints can reinforce a direct style. For example:
Answer in this order: conclusion, evidence, steps, and risks. Use short paragraphs. Do not add a greeting, motivational closing, or invitation to share feelings.Use only constraints that help your work. An excessively long style can conflict with a task-specific request and make it harder to diagnose why a response changed.

Test the preference with a prompt that normally invites social language, then inspect the response for the behaviors you actually want to remove.
- Ask a factual question that does not require emotional support.
- Look for greetings, reassurance, endearments, self-descriptions of feelings, or relationship claims.
- Check whether the answer still contains the requested facts and necessary safety information.
- Edit or retry once with the selected style, because style selection applies to those actions.
- If the behavior persists, use a more explicit custom or in-chat instruction.
Evaluate several responses rather than one sentence. A neutral style should not mean that Claude omits uncertainty, warnings, or respectful language required by the task. The goal is to remove unnecessary relational framing while preserving useful content.
Why Claude may still use an unwanted phrase
The instruction is too general
“Be less emotional” leaves the boundary undefined. Replace it with named examples and a replacement format, as in the custom instruction above.
Another instruction has priority in the task
A prompt asking for a warm condolence message, a friendly marketing email, or a character’s dialogue inherently requests emotional wording. Specify whether your neutral rule applies to Claude’s explanation, the generated text, or both.

Profile, project, style, and in-chat controls have different scopes. A rule set in one project or conversation should not be assumed to govern another scope.
The interface differs by account
Anthropic’s help pages describe the controls, but labels, rollout timing, and plan availability can change. If you do not see a listed menu item, check the current profile, settings, and project screens rather than assuming that the feature is absent from every account.
Language and task affect the result
The documented prompt-design guidance is framed around English instructions. Requests in another language, role-play, quoted dialogue, or a task that explicitly asks for warmth may require a language-specific or task-specific rule.
A reusable neutral-language template
Use this template as a starting point in a custom style, profile preference, project instruction, or chat. Adjust the scope sentence so it matches where you place it.
Communication requirements:
- Use neutral, direct, professional language.
- Lead with the answer, then give evidence, assumptions, and next steps.
- Avoid terms of endearment, affectionate nicknames, emotional reassurance, and claims of personal attachment.
- Do not describe your own emotions or imply that you have a personal relationship with me.
- Omit greetings, praise, motivational closings, and filler when they add no information.
- Preserve emotional wording when it is quoted source material or explicitly required by the task.
- If the request conflicts with these rules, follow the task-specific request and state the scope of the exception briefly.The final two rules prevent an important distinction from being lost: neutral conversational framing is different from deleting emotion that belongs in the material you are asking Claude to handle.
What to expect from these controls
Styles and instructions are behavioral guidance, not a documented hard filter for every phrase. They can make Claude more neutral and direct, but the available help pages do not promise complete suppression of emotional or relational wording in all outputs. Keep a short correction ready for conversations where the tone drifts, and review outputs when exact wording matters.
