Go to Settings > Personalization > Memory to stop or limit personalization, then use the conversation’s history controls to delete the chat. Disabling Memory does not erase old conversations, and deleting a conversation does not necessarily remove a saved memory created from it.
The short answer
Use the control that matches the result you want:
- Stop future personalization: Open Settings > Personalization > Memory and turn off the available memory controls. The exact labels can differ by plan, region, platform, or workspace.
- Remove a teen conversation: Find it in chat history, open that conversation’s history controls, choose Delete, and confirm. It disappears from the account view immediately and cannot be restored.
- Remove a remembered detail too: Delete the saved memory separately, then delete the chat where the detail was first provided and any other place it appears, such as a Library file or connected app.
- Hide a conversation without deleting it: Archive it. Archiving changes how it is displayed, not how long it is retained.
- Prevent a new conversation from entering history or creating memories: Start a Temporary Chat and select the unpersonalized option before sending messages when that option is offered.
These controls affect different data stores. Treating them as interchangeable is the most common reason a detail or conversation appears to remain.

What Memory, chat deletion, archiving and Temporary Chat actually do

OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT guidance states, “Turning off Memory does not delete your past chats.” That distinction applies to a teen account as well as other consumer accounts, although the controls visible to a particular account can vary.
How to turn off ChatGPT Memory
1. Open the Memory settings
- Sign in to the relevant ChatGPT account.
- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization.
- Open Memory.
Depending on the account experience, you may see controls named Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories. Some accounts will not show every control. Availability can differ by plan, region, platform, and managed workspace policy.

2. Choose which kind of remembering to stop
If the goal is to stop ChatGPT from using information it has explicitly saved about the user, turn off the control for saved memories or the main Memory setting shown on the account. If the goal is to stop it from drawing on previous conversations, turn off Reference chat history as well. These are related but separate sources of personalization.
Turning off the setting changes future behavior; it does not act as a cleanup operation for the account. Existing conversations remain in history, and a saved memory can remain until it is removed directly.
3. Delete a saved memory when the detail must be removed
Open the memory-management area, such as Manage or Saved memories, and remove the particular entry. The label and layout are account-dependent, so use the control that lists individual memories rather than only switching the feature off.

For a thorough removal, also delete the conversation in which the detail was first shared. Check other possible sources identified by OpenAI’s guidance, including a Library file or a connected app, and remove the same detail there if it exists. Deleting only the chat may leave the separately stored memory; deleting only the memory may leave the original text in the conversation.
4. Understand the Reference chat history deletion window
When Reference chat history is turned off, information remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days. The original chats are not deleted by that setting and continue to appear in history until you remove them yourself. Saved memories are a different category and are not automatically deleted merely because Reference chat history is disabled.

How to delete a teen’s ChatGPT conversation
1. Locate the exact conversation
Open the account’s chat history and identify the conversation to remove. If the objective is to erase a specific disclosure, check the conversation itself before deleting so you know you have selected the right item. A deleted chat cannot be recovered.
2. Use the conversation’s history controls
- Open the controls associated with the conversation in the chat-history list.
- Choose Delete.
- Confirm the deletion when ChatGPT asks you to do so.
The exact control placement can differ between the web, mobile, and workspace experiences. Look for the history action attached to that conversation; do not choose an archive action if permanent removal is the goal.

The conversation is removed from the account view immediately. OpenAI says it is then scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, except when the data has already been de-identified and disassociated or must be retained longer for security or legal obligations. The 30-day period is a general schedule, not a promise that every record is physically erased at the same moment, and deletion is not reversible.
4. Remove related memory separately
Deleting the conversation does not necessarily delete a saved memory derived from it. If the chat contained a name, preference, family detail, health information, or another fact that should no longer be used for personalization, return to Settings > Personalization > Memory and remove the corresponding saved entry. Also check other locations where the same information may have been supplied, such as a Library file or connected app.
Archive versus delete: choose deliberately
Archiving is appropriate when the teen or family wants a cleaner chat list but may need the conversation later. An archived conversation remains retained and is not a privacy deletion; it also does not remove a memory created from the conversation.

Deletion is the irreversible choice. It removes the chat from the account view immediately and starts the published deletion schedule. Before confirming, verify that the conversation is not needed for a school record, support request, safety documentation, or another purpose, because ChatGPT does not provide a restore path after deletion.
Use Temporary Chat for future conversations
Temporary Chat is designed for a conversation that should not become part of the normal personalized history. Start a new chat, choose the Temporary Chat option, and select the unpersonalized option before sending the first message when that choice is available in the account’s interface.
- A temporary conversation does not appear in chat history unless it is saved.
- It does not create or update memories while it remains temporary.
- OpenAI may retain temporary chats for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
- Saving the conversation converts it to a regular chat subject to the account’s ordinary settings.
Temporary Chat is a forward-looking safeguard. It does not erase older chats or remove saved memories that already exist.
Teen accounts and parental controls
ChatGPT for Teens is enabled automatically for eligible accounts
ChatGPT for Teens is automatically enabled when OpenAI identifies an eligible account holder as being under 18; the teen does not have to switch the experience on manually. The controls and protections available to that account can therefore differ from those on an adult account.
What a linked parent or guardian can manage
A linked parent or guardian can manage selected settings through Parental controls. OpenAI’s teen guidance says supported memory controls can be managed there. The exact controls exposed to a parent depend on the account and the feature’s availability.

What a parent or guardian cannot see
Parental controls do not let a parent or guardian read or monitor the teen’s conversations. For limited safety notifications, OpenAI says it shares only the information needed to help support the teen’s safety. A parent who needs a particular conversation removed should use the account’s deletion controls rather than expecting parental controls to provide a conversation viewer.
When the teen turns 18
When ChatGPT identifies the account holder as 18 or older, the account may move out of the teen experience and teen protections may be removed. Automatic transitions are gradually rolling out, so timing can vary. The linked parental-controls connection ends during that transition. A change in age status does not itself delete the account’s previous chats or saved memories; use the controls above if those records need to be removed.

Improve the model for everyone is a data-use setting, not a chat-history or Memory deletion control. Turning it off does not delete, hide, archive, or unsave conversations. Likewise, turning off Memory does not decide whether eligible content can be used for model improvement. Review the appropriate setting for each objective, and remember that managed workspace retention, access, and policy rules can also apply.
A useful way to separate the decisions is:
- Personalization question: Should ChatGPT use saved details or prior-chat information to tailor responses? Change Memory and Reference chat history.
- Conversation question: Should this particular chat remain in the account? Delete or archive the conversation.
- Future-session question: Should a new chat create history or memories? Use Temporary Chat.
- Model-use question: Should eligible content be used to improve models? Review the model-improvement setting separately.
Practical cleanup plans
If the goal is “stop personalization but keep the chats”
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Turn off the available Memory and, if desired, Reference chat history controls.
- Leave the conversations in history if they are still needed.
- Delete individual saved memories only when a particular detail should no longer be retained.
If the goal is “erase one sensitive teen conversation”
- Delete the conversation from chat history and confirm.
- Open Memory management and remove any saved detail that came from that conversation.
- Check the Library and connected apps for copies of the same information.
- Use Temporary Chat for similar future discussions.
If the goal is “hide it for now, not erase it”
- Archive the conversation rather than deleting it.
- Remember that archiving does not change retention or remove memories.
- Unarchive it later if it is needed again.
Troubleshooting when a chat or detail still appears
The old chat is still visible after Memory was turned off
This is expected. Disabling Memory does not delete past chats. Delete the conversation from its history controls if it should disappear from the account view.

A detail is still used after the source chat was deleted
A separate saved memory may still contain the detail. Open the Memory management area and remove that entry. Then check any Library file or connected app that supplied the same information.
The original chats remain after Reference chat history was disabled
Reference chat history controls remembered information, not the chat list. The remembered information is scheduled for deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days, while the original conversations remain until separately deleted.
The conversation disappeared and cannot be found
Confirm whether it was archived or deleted. An archived chat may be recoverable through the archive controls; a deleted chat cannot be restored. If the account is in a managed workspace, retention and access policies may affect what is visible.
The Memory option is missing
Controls vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. Look for alternate labels such as Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories. A linked teen account may expose supported controls through Parental controls instead.
