Chat history, saved memory, personalization, model-training permission, and deletion are separate controls. Turn off the control that matches your goal, then remove existing chats or memories separately. A temporary or incognito chat can reduce ordinary saving, but provider safety, legal, feedback, or workplace-retention rules may still apply.
Use the section for your assistant and account type below. Consumer, work, school, team, and enterprise accounts can show different labels or administrator-controlled settings.

Understand the four controls before changing anything
“History,” “memory,” and “training” describe different data flows. Disabling one does not automatically disable the others or erase information already held by the provider.

Choose your objective first:
- Stop personalization: disable memory or chat-history reference, and remove saved memories that you no longer want used.
- Keep a conversation out of ordinary history: use the assistant’s temporary, incognito, or equivalent mode before sending the first message.
- Stop eligible chats being used for model training: change the provider’s separate data-use or training setting.
- Remove old information: delete the relevant chats, activity items, memories, and any account data covered by the provider’s deletion tools.
After changing a setting, start a new test conversation and check whether it appears in history, affects a known personalization prompt, or is listed in activity. Do not include sensitive information in the test.

Check your account type and current interface
Settings differ by personal account, work or school account, team plan, enterprise tenant, device, country, age, and feature rollout. A workspace administrator can override or hide controls, and mobile and web apps may use different menus. If a label is missing, look for the provider’s privacy, data controls, activity, personalization, or memory page rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.
Use the exact assistant and account context before following a path:
- Personal accounts generally expose the user’s own memory and training choices.
- Work and school accounts may apply retention, eDiscovery, audit, or administrator policies even when a user selects a temporary mode.
- Features can be limited by age, region, platform, or whether activity logging is enabled.
- Changing a setting in one product does not automatically change settings for another assistant from the same company.
ChatGPT: separate memory, training, temporary chat, and deletion
Turn off memory and references to past chats
In ChatGPT, open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Depending on your plan, region, platform, and workspace, you may see Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, and Manage or Saved memories.
- Turn off Reference saved memories if you do not want ChatGPT to use or create saved facts about you.
- If the separate option is available, turn off Reference chat history to stop using information inferred from previous conversations.
- Open the management screen and review individual saved memories. Delete entries you do not want retained.
OpenAI documents a specific interaction: turning off Reference saved memories also turns off Reference chat history; when saved-memory reference remains on, chat-history reference can be managed separately. Turning off chat-history reference schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion within 30 days, while the original conversations remain in your chat history until you delete them.
Stop eligible new chats being used to improve models
Go to Settings > Data Controls > Improve the model for everyone and switch it off. This is independent of memory. A conversation can remain visible in your history after the training setting is disabled, and changing memory does not itself change model-training permission.
Use Temporary Chat for one conversation
Start a new Temporary Chat before typing sensitive content. ChatGPT may offer Unpersonalized and Personalized choices at the start:

- Unpersonalized does not use existing memories, custom instructions, or plugins for that conversation.
- Personalized can use those existing sources, although a temporary chat does not create or update memories while it remains temporary.
Temporary chats stay out of ordinary history and are not used to improve OpenAI models while temporary. OpenAI says it may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. If you save the chat, it becomes a regular conversation governed by your account settings.

Deleting a chat does not necessarily delete a saved memory created from it. Conversely, deleting a saved memory does not remove the mention from the old conversation. For a clean-up, delete the relevant conversations from history and remove corresponding entries under the memory-management screen. Allow the documented deletion window to pass before assuming information is gone from every internal system.
Claude: pause, reset, per-chat memory, and incognito
Pause or reset account memory
Open Settings > Memory. Turning memory off presents two distinct choices:
- Pause memory keeps existing memories but stops Claude from using them and stops creation of new memories.
- Reset memory deletes memories, including project memories. Reset is irreversible.
Choose pause when you may want the existing profile later; choose reset when those stored facts should be removed and you accept that they cannot be recovered through the setting.
Disable memory for one new chat
- Start a new Claude conversation.
- Open the + menu.
- Turn off Memory.
- Send the first message only after the switch is off.
That conversation does not use memory or add to it, but it remains in chat history and can be found by searching past chats. This is different from Claude’s incognito mode.
Use incognito chat when history should not show the conversation
Claude describes incognito chat as a mode that does not save the conversation to Claude memory or ordinary chat history. Enterprise retention policies still apply, so an organization may retain or access the data during its required period.

Check availability and delete related data
Claude’s current help documentation says memory is on by default for Free, Pro, and Max accounts on web, desktop, and mobile. Team and Enterprise owners decide whether it is available; it is off for each member until enabled. Deleting or allowing a conversation to expire does not automatically remove memory entries created from it. Review Settings > Memory and delete those entries separately.
Gemini: manage Memory, Gemini Apps Activity, and temporary chats
Turn off past-chat personalization
On the web, open Settings and help > Personal Intelligence. In the mobile app, open the profile menu and choose Personal Intelligence. The past-chat Memory feature is documented for eligible users with a personal Google Account who are 18 or older and have Keep Activity enabled. It is not available for work, school, or supervised accounts and can vary by platform or feature.
To remove information Gemini learned from earlier conversations, delete the relevant chats from Gemini Apps Activity or from Recent chats. Google notes that personalization can take a short time to reflect the deletion.
Stop activity saving and model-improvement use
- Open Gemini Apps Activity.
- Choose Turn off or Turn off and delete activity.
- Select the deletion range if Google presents one, then confirm.
For personal accounts, Google says turning off Keep Activity stops future chats from appearing in Activity and from being used to train its AI models, unless you send feedback. Google may nevertheless retain conversations for up to 72 hours to provide the service, process feedback, and protect users. Some Connected Apps become unavailable when this setting is off, and other Google services can continue collecting information under their own settings.
Use Gemini Temporary Chat when offered
Google’s privacy hub describes Gemini Temporary Chat as an option for users who do not want Gemini to remember information or use it to personalize the experience. Availability and behavior can change, so treat Temporary Chat as a conversation-level choice and keep the separate Keep Activity setting in mind. Work and school settings may be controlled by a Workspace administrator.
Review automatic deletion and reviewed data
Gemini Apps Privacy Hub documentation lists an 18-month default auto-delete period for Gemini Apps Activity, configurable to 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite retention. Activity already reviewed by human reviewers can be retained for up to three years and is not deleted when account activity is deleted. These are provider-published retention rules, not a guarantee that every copy disappears at the same instant.

Microsoft Copilot: consumer privacy, Microsoft 365 history, and temporary chat
Consumer Copilot: opt out of model training
For consumer Copilot, open the profile menu and choose Privacy. The web, desktop, and mobile paths can differ. Turn off the training control to exclude future conversation activity from training the relevant AI models.

Conversations may still support general product or system improvements and may be processed for advertising, safety, security, or compliance. Training can be off while personalization remains on, so this setting alone does not stop Copilot from remembering recent conversations.
Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat: turn off Chat history
- Open Chat settings > Personalization.
- Turn off Chat history. Some work or school accounts show Chat history & work insights instead.
- Review the organization’s retention or compliance policy if the account is managed.
Microsoft says turning off this setting schedules inferences from previous chats for deletion after 30 days. If you turn it back on within that period, Copilot can add those memories back. Work insights depend on the account and the organization’s plan.
Use Microsoft 365 temporary chat
Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat’s temporary chat does not access or store personalized information, does not appear in chat history, and cannot later be referenced by you or Copilot. An organization’s retention policy can still require the data to be kept, and an IT administrator may access it during that period.
Remove existing memories separately
Deleting a specific Copilot memory is different from clearing inferences derived from chat history. On consumer accounts, deleting all memory does not delete conversation history. For a thorough removal, use the memory controls and the available conversation-history or activity deletion tools instead of relying on one switch.

A practical privacy clean-up checklist
- Identify the account: personal, work, school, team, or enterprise.
- Disable personalization: turn off memory or references to past chats, then inspect saved memories.
- Disable model-training use: change the separate training or activity setting.
- Delete old conversations: remove chats from history, activity, or recent-conversation lists.
- Delete derived records: remove saved memories, project memories, and Copilot inferences where the product exposes them.
- Check connected services: turning off activity can change Connected Apps or other integrations; review their individual data settings.
- Read workspace rules: an administrator’s retention, audit, eDiscovery, or legal-hold policy can override a user-facing temporary mode.
- Verify: start a new non-sensitive conversation and confirm the expected history, memory, and activity behavior.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a training opt-out deletes history
Training controls usually govern future model-improvement use, not the account’s visible conversation list. Delete chats separately if they should no longer appear there.
Deleting a chat but leaving its memory
Assistants can store a concise memory or inference separately from the transcript. Open the memory or personalization manager after deleting the conversation.
Using a temporary chat after typing the sensitive prompt
The mode must be enabled before the first message. Start a new temporary or incognito conversation rather than switching modes after sending content.
Confusing “not in history” with “not retained anywhere”
Safety copies, service logs, human-review records, legal holds, and workplace archives can follow different retention periods. Read the provider’s stated exceptions for the account you are using.
Ignoring feedback buttons
Some providers state that sending feedback can change how a conversation is handled even after activity or training settings are turned off. Avoid sending feedback from a conversation you intended to keep outside those uses unless you have checked the current policy.
What to expect after you switch settings
Changes can be immediate in the interface but delayed in back-end deletion. OpenAI documents up to 30 days for a safety copy of a Temporary Chat and within 30 days for information remembered from past chats after chat-history reference is disabled. Google documents up to 72 hours for certain conversations after Keep Activity is turned off, plus longer periods for auto-deletion or human-reviewed activity. Microsoft documents deletion of Microsoft 365 Copilot inferences after 30 days when Chat history is turned off, with possible restoration if the toggle is re-enabled during that window.
These periods describe the providers’ published operational rules for the named features and year of the documentation. They are not independent studies and should not be generalized to every product, account type, or internal copy.
