Firefox for Android does not document a single global switch that disables all background playback. To stop a video that is already running, pause it from Firefox’s Open Tabs screen or Android’s notification media controls. To prevent sites from starting media automatically, use Menu (three dots) > Settings > Privacy & security > Site settings > Autoplay and select Block audio and video. These controls address different problems: autoplay is an unsolicited start, while background playback is media that continues after Firefox is minimized.
What “background video playback” means in Firefox for Android
There are two behaviors that are easy to confuse:
| Behavior | What happens | Firefox control that applies |
|---|---|---|
| Autoplay | A page starts audio or video without you pressing its play button. | The Autoplay permission under Site settings. |
| Background playback | Media that was already playing continues after you minimize Firefox, switch apps or leave the page visible on screen. | Pause controls, Android media controls and the website’s own behavior. Mozilla’s current help does not document a universal off switch. |
That distinction determines the right fix. If a news page begins playing as soon as it loads, change Autoplay. If a podcast or video keeps running after you press Home, pause the active media or use Android’s notification controls. Blocking autoplay does not necessarily stop a video that you deliberately started from continuing in the background.

Stop a video that is playing right now
Use Firefox’s Open Tabs pause control
- Open Firefox’s home screen. If you are viewing a page, tap the address bar or use the browser’s home control to reach the Firefox home screen.
- Find the Open Tabs section. It lists the tabs currently open, including the tab producing media.
- Tap the pause button shown for the playing tab.
- Return to the page if needed. The tab remains open, but its audio or video is stopped.
This is the most direct method when you want to leave the tab available without allowing its media to keep consuming sound, attention or data.
Pause it from Android’s notification panel
- Swipe down from the top of the Android screen to open notifications. On some phones you need a second swipe to expand the full panel.
- Locate the media-player notification associated with Firefox.
- Tap the pause button. If several players are listed, choose the Firefox player that is producing the sound.
Android’s media controls can remain available even when Firefox is not the foreground app. The exact notification layout varies by Android version and phone manufacturer, but the play/pause action is normally exposed in the media card.

Prevent websites from starting media automatically
For future page loads, use Firefox’s current Android settings path:
- Tap the Menu button (three dots).
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & security.
- Choose Site settings.
- Tap Autoplay.
- Select Block audio and video.
The setting applies to automatic starts. It does not retroactively pause a player that is already running; use one of the pause methods above for that.
Choose the Autoplay option that matches your data and sound needs
| Option | Effect | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Block audio and video | Blocks automatic starts for both sound and picture. | You do not want pages to begin playing media without a deliberate tap. |
| Block audio and video on cellular data only | Stops autoplay while using mobile data, but allows it when connected to Wi‑Fi. | You mainly want to prevent unexpected mobile-data use and cellular interruptions. |
| Block audio only | Prevents sound from starting automatically while allowing video to start. | You are comfortable with silent motion but do not want surprise audio. |
Mozilla documents these choices in its current Playing videos in Firefox for Android help. Menu labels can be translated or positioned slightly differently by Firefox release, but the settings hierarchy is the current documented route rather than the older paths found in archived forum answers.
Why a video can continue after you minimize Firefox
Mozilla’s current help explicitly says that minimizing Firefox while audio or video is playing can allow it to continue in the background so you can multitask. That behavior is separate from autoplay: the user (or the page) has already started the media, and Firefox can keep the playback session alive while another app is visible.

Whether playback actually continues can depend on the website and its player. A page may deliberately stop when it is no longer visible, when fullscreen ends or when the browser changes tabs. Consequently, two sites can behave differently on the same phone with the same Firefox setting.
Private tabs behave differently
Firefox pauses audio or video in private tabs when the browser is minimized. Regular tabs may continue playing in the background. If you need media to stop whenever Firefox leaves the foreground, using a private tab is a built-in behavior documented by Mozilla, but it also changes how that browsing session handles history, cookies and site data. It is not a replacement for the Autoplay permission when your goal is to block automatic starts in normal browsing.
Is there a global “disable background playback” switch?
Mozilla’s current Firefox for Android help documents the pause controls and the Autoplay permission, but it does not document a global setting that forces every regular tab to stop media as soon as Firefox is minimized. The absence of a documented switch is important: do not assume that changing Autoplay will disable background continuation, and do not rely on instructions that claim a universal background-playback toggle without identifying a current Firefox release and Android build.

Fix an Autoplay setting that seems ineffective
Check for a site-specific exception
Firefox allows an individual site permission to override the general Autoplay choice. If one website still starts media, inspect that site’s permission or the Exceptions list in the Autoplay settings. A previous “allow” decision for that domain can take precedence over the global block.
Reload after changing permission
Change the site permission, then reload the page. A player that was initialized under the old permission may not re-evaluate the rule until the document is loaded again. If the tab continues to play during the change, pause it separately from Open Tabs or Android’s media notification.
Test a different site
Some pages start media through custom scripts, embedded players or user-interface elements that behave differently from ordinary HTML video. Open another site after applying the block. If the second site obeys the rule, the first site is likely using a remembered exception or player-specific behavior rather than indicating that Firefox ignored the setting everywhere.

When a site stops playback by itself
Turning off background playback is not the only possible symptom. A site may stop a video as soon as you minimize Firefox, switch tabs or leave fullscreen. Mozilla explains that pages can react to the Page Visibility API: when a webpage moves to another tab, the browser triggers a visibilitychange event. Sites can also react to fullscreenchange. Their players may pause in response.

This is website behavior, not proof that Firefox has a hidden “stop background video” preference. Mozilla’s background-playback guidance mentions the Video Background Play Fix extension as an example of software that intercepts those events to keep playback going. That extension addresses the opposite problem—preserving playback when a site pauses—and is not a method for disabling background playback.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If playback stops unexpectedly or will not stay active
When your intention is to keep a legitimate video playing while you multitask, Mozilla recommends checking device-level restrictions before changing browser permissions:
- Review Android battery restrictions for Firefox. Aggressive background limits can suspend the browser or its media process.
- Check Android data restrictions. A background-data limit can interrupt a stream after you leave the app.
- Try another website. If only one player stops, its visibility or fullscreen rules may be responsible.
- Check picture-in-picture permission if you expect a floating video window. Picture-in-picture is a separate Android feature from ordinary audio continuation.
Android menu names and paths differ by manufacturer and Android version, so the labels for battery, data and picture-in-picture controls may not match the wording on another phone.
Choose the right fix for your goal
| Your goal | Action | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Silence a video already playing | Pause it in Open Tabs or from Android’s media notification. | Stops the current playback session without changing site permissions. |
| Stop pages from starting sound and video automatically | Menu > Settings > Privacy & security > Site settings > Autoplay > Block audio and video. | Blocks future automatic starts, subject to site-specific exceptions. |
| Protect cellular data but allow autoplay on Wi‑Fi | Select the cellular-data-only blocking option. | Applies the block only while using mobile data. |
| Allow silent video but block surprise sound | Select Block audio only. | Audio must not autoplay, while video may still begin. |
| Have minimizing pause media in a browsing session | Use a private tab. | Firefox pauses private-tab media when minimized; regular tabs may continue. |
| Keep a site playing despite its own pause behavior | Investigate the site’s visibility/fullscreen handling and device restrictions. | Addresses site or Android interruptions, not Firefox’s autoplay permission. |
A practical setup that prevents most unwanted playback
- Set Autoplay to Block audio and video if you want the strongest general prevention.
- When a page has a remembered exception, remove or change that site permission and reload the page.
- When media is already running, pause it from Open Tabs or the Android notification instead of waiting for the Autoplay rule to affect it.
- Use private tabs for sessions where minimizing Firefox should pause media automatically.
- If a site behaves differently from the rest, test another site and consider whether its player responds to visibility or fullscreen changes.
- If playback reliability—not stopping it—is the problem, inspect Android battery, data and picture-in-picture permissions.
Why old Firefox instructions can mislead you
An archived Mozilla Support forum question from 2015 uses the wording “how do I disable autoplay video on Firefox on my phone?” Its accepted answer refers to Firefox 41 and the path Settings > Display > Allow autoplay. That interface is historical and should not be used as current Android guidance. The current documented route is under Privacy & security > Site settings > Autoplay.
Best Value
The older answer also concerns autoplay, not the broader question of media continuing after Firefox is minimized. Treating those as the same setting is the most common reason an apparently correct instruction fails to solve background playback.
What to expect after changing the setting
- A page that tries to start audio and video on load should be blocked when no site exception permits it.
- A video that you intentionally started can still continue in a regular tab after Firefox is minimized; pause it with the documented controls.
- A private-tab video is paused when Firefox is minimized.
- A site can still stop its own player when the page becomes hidden or leaves fullscreen.
- Android battery or data restrictions can interrupt background activity independently of Firefox’s Autoplay permission.
These outcomes are consistent with Mozilla’s current descriptions: Autoplay controls automatic starts, while background continuation is influenced by the tab type, the website’s player and Android’s system policies.
Bottom line for Firefox on Android
There is no documented universal Firefox switch for turning off all background video in regular tabs. For immediate control, pause the playing tab from Open Tabs or use Android’s notification media controls. For prevention, set Autoplay to Block audio and video at Menu > Settings > Privacy & security > Site settings > Autoplay, then check site exceptions if a particular domain ignores the rule. Remember that private tabs pause media when minimized, whereas regular tabs and individual websites can follow different background-playback policies.
