How to Turn Off Automatically Created Assets in Google Ads (Search, Performance Max, and Account-Level Controls)

How do I turn off automatically created assets in Google Ads? First identify which automation is creating the content. Search campaigns use the legacy Automatically Created Assets control, now transitioning to the AI Max setting called text customization. Performance Max has its own text-customization controls, while dynamic sitelinks, callouts and similar additions are managed at the account level. These settings are separate, so changing one does not disable the others.

Use the procedure below for your campaign type, then check the relevant asset reports. Disabling a feature prevents or stops automated serving; removing one generated asset is a different operation.

Choose the control that matches the unwanted asset

Google Ads can add content in three different scopes. Selecting the wrong menu is the most common reason an advertiser believes automation is still active.

Search and Performance Max controls are campaign-level. Account-level automated assets can be eligible across multiple campaigns, including alongside assets you supplied yourself.

Diagnose the source before changing a setting

Start with the item you want to stop, not with a menu. Record the campaign name and type, then identify whether the item is a headline, description, Final URL expansion, sitelink, callout, structured snippet or another asset format. The format usually points to the correct scope.

  1. Check the campaign type. Search and Performance Max do not share the same text-customization controls. A setting changed in a Search campaign does not govern Performance Max.
  2. Check the reporting label. Search asset-level and combination reports can show generated text alongside advertiser-provided responsive search ad assets. Performance Max asset-group reporting identifies Google AI assets, while expanded Final URL assets have a separate reporting tab.
  3. Separate current delivery from history. A report can retain an asset or combination that was previously eligible. Confirm its current status after saving a change instead of treating every historical row as evidence that generation is still active.
  4. Check whether you supplied the asset. Turning off automation does not remove manually entered headlines, descriptions, sitelinks or other assets. The feature setting only governs the automated source covered by that setting.
  5. Check the scope. If the same automated sitelink or callout appears in several campaigns, it may be an account-level asset rather than campaign-generated text.

This diagnosis prevents a common mistake: disabling Search text customization when the visible addition is an account-level dynamic sitelink, or removing one Performance Max asset when the actual goal is to stop all future generation.

Turn off automatically created assets in a Search campaign

Use the legacy campaign control when it is still shown

Google is transitioning the legacy Automatically Created Assets feature into AI Max under the name text customization. If your account still displays the old control, use this documented route:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Campaigns and select the Settings tab.
  2. Select the Search campaign, or select the campaigns you want to edit together.
  3. Choose Edit > Change automatically created assets settings.
  4. Select Off: Use only assets I provide directly for my ads.
  5. Optionally choose a reason for the change.
  6. Select Apply.

This setting applies to the selected Search campaigns. It is not an account-wide switch for dynamic sitelinks, callouts or other account-level automated assets.

If the old option is missing

The interface may no longer show “Automatically Created Assets.” In that case, open the affected Search campaign’s settings and look under AI Max for Text customization. Google describes text customization as a campaign-level Search setting that must be enabled through AI Max. Turn that setting off, following the labels currently displayed in your account.

Because the migration is ongoing, the wording and placement can differ between accounts. Do not assume that an account-level asset switch or a Performance Max switch controls Search text customization.

What Search text customization generates

Text customization creates additional headlines and descriptions that can run with the responsive search ad assets you entered. Google says its inputs can include your domain, landing page, existing ads and ad-group keywords. For a particular query, Google selects eligible text assets according to relevance and predicted performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The feature therefore operates at the campaign level, even though the generated text can be selected for individual queries and combinations. Turning it off tells Google to use only assets you provide directly for the affected campaigns; it does not remove the responsive search ads themselves.

If you want to keep the feature enabled but control what appears, review the generated text rather than treating the setting as an all-or-nothing approval of every variation. Check that statements match the landing page and comply with applicable advertising policies. The domain and landing page are inputs to generation, so outdated site copy or an inaccurate destination can produce text that needs review.

How to confirm the Search change

Open the ad-level asset report for the affected responsive search ads and then review the combination report. These views help distinguish a generated headline or description from one you entered manually and show how eligible assets were combined. Look for the current status after the setting is saved, while remembering that historical report rows may remain visible.

If a variation continues to appear, verify that you changed every selected Search campaign and that the item is not an account-level asset. Also check that the item was not manually added by another user. The Search control does not turn off dynamic sitelinks, structured snippets or callouts.

Turn off text customization in Performance Max

Disable generated text and, if needed, expanded Final URL assets

Performance Max does not use the Search campaign menu path. Use its Asset Optimization settings instead:

  1. Open the Performance Max campaign and select Settings.
  2. Expand Asset Optimization.
  3. Open Text Customization.
  4. Clear Generation to stop Google from generating text assets.
  5. If you also want to stop expanded Final URL assets, clear Final URL.
  6. Save the change.

Google does not allow Final URL to be selected by itself; text assets must remain selected for that option to be available. If you only want to stop URL expansion while retaining generated text, leave Generation enabled and clear Final URL. To stop both types, clear both options.

Generation and Final URL represent different outcomes. Generation controls additional text assets, while Final URL controls expanded destination assets. Decide which behavior is unwanted before clearing the boxes so you do not turn off more automation than intended.

Change several Performance Max campaigns at once

Google also documents a bulk campaign-edit route for changing text customization to Off. Select the relevant Performance Max campaigns, open the bulk editing controls, choose the text-customization setting and apply the Off value. The exact bulk-edit labels can vary as Google updates the interface, so verify the resulting value in each campaign’s Settings page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bulk editing is useful when the same policy applies to several campaigns, but it also increases the scope of an accidental change. Before applying it, confirm that every selected campaign is a Performance Max campaign and that you intend to change both current and future text customization behavior for all of them.

What happens to assets already reported

Disabling Performance Max text customization is not the same as deleting a single asset. Google Ads Help states that when you disable text customization, the assets are reported as Removed and no longer serve. Allow reporting time to update before diagnosing a delivery issue.

After saving, return to Settings > Asset Optimization > Text Customization and confirm the Generation and Final URL states. Then inspect both the asset-group report and the expanded Final URL tab. These checks cover the two distinct asset sources and help verify that the intended control, rather than an unrelated campaign setting, was changed.

Turn off one generated Performance Max asset without disabling the feature

You may want to reject a particular headline, description or URL expansion while keeping automation for other assets. In that case, leave text customization enabled and work from the asset reports:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Performance Max campaign’s asset-group reporting.
  2. Identify the Google AI asset you do not want to use.
  3. Use the asset’s removal action.
  4. Confirm the removal, then check the report again to verify its status.

Expanded Final URL assets have their own reporting tab. Removing one there applies across the ad groups and Final URLs in that campaign, so check the scope before confirming. Removing an asset does not switch off future generation; use the Text Customization settings when the goal is to prevent new assets.

This narrower action is appropriate when one generated claim is inaccurate or unsuitable but the rest of the automated assets are acceptable. It is not a substitute for disabling Generation when the requirement is to use only advertiser-written text.

Turn off account-level automated assets

Dynamic sitelinks, structured snippets, callouts and similar additions can be managed outside an individual campaign. Use this procedure when the unwanted content is an account-level asset rather than an automatically written Search headline or description.

  1. Open Campaigns > Assets.
  2. Switch to the Association or Associations view, depending on the label in your account.
  3. Open the three-dot menu and choose Account-level automated assets.
  4. Open Advanced settings.
  5. Select the specific asset type you want to stop.
  6. Provide a reason and any requested comments.
  7. Save or choose the control to turn the asset type off.

This change is made by asset type. Turning off dynamic sitelinks does not automatically turn off callouts or structured snippets. Account-level assets can be shared across campaigns, and most can remain eligible alongside manually supplied assets unless you disable the relevant type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the account-level route when the same automated addition is appearing in multiple eligible campaigns. Because the setting is not tied to one campaign, changing it can affect every campaign that can use that account-level asset type. Review the selected type carefully before saving and record the reason if your team uses change notes for account governance.

Account-level automation versus manually supplied assets

Turning off an automated account-level type does not delete manually supplied assets of the same general format. For example, disabling automated callouts addresses the account-level automated callout source; it does not remove callouts that an advertiser has directly associated. If manually supplied content is also unwanted, review its associations separately.

Verify that the change took effect

Search campaigns

For Search text customization, use the ad-level asset report and the combination report. These reports show which assets are being reported and how they are combined. If a generated variation still appears in historical reporting, distinguish a past impression from a currently eligible asset; reports can retain historical records after a setting change.

Review the wording against the website and the applicable Google Ads policies. Google specifically cautions advertisers to monitor text customization for accuracy. A setting change does not make an inaccurate claim acceptable, and disabling generation does not remove manually supplied text that violates a policy.

Performance Max

After saving the Text Customization setting, return to the campaign’s Asset Optimization section and confirm that Generation and Final URL show the intended state. Then inspect the asset-group report and the expanded Final URL tab. A generated asset that is marked Removed should no longer serve once the change has propagated.

If you removed only one asset, verify that the individual item is no longer eligible while Generation remains in the state you chose. If you disabled the feature, verify the campaign-level setting rather than relying only on one asset row.

Account-level assets

Reopen Campaigns > Assets > Account-level automated assets > Advanced settings and confirm that the specific asset type is off. Check more than one campaign if the account uses shared assets; the account-level setting is the relevant scope.

Common problems and the correct fix

“I turned it off, but I still see an automated headline”

  • Confirm that the campaign is Search and that you changed AI Max > Text customization, not an account-level asset type.
  • Check whether the item is a manually supplied asset or a historical report entry.
  • For Performance Max, verify Generation under Asset Optimization > Text Customization rather than using the Search path.
  • Allow the asset report to update, then check current eligibility and serving status.

“I cannot find Automatically Created Assets”

The legacy label is being replaced. Look in the Search campaign’s AI Max settings for Text customization. If you are working in Performance Max, go directly to Asset Optimization > Text Customization; the legacy Search control is not the right menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I disabled text generation but a sitelink or callout remains”

Those are likely account-level automated assets. Open the Assets area, switch to the Association or Associations view, and use Account-level automated assets > Advanced settings. Disable the particular type rather than changing Search or Performance Max text customization.

“I removed one asset, but new ones appeared”

Individual removal and feature disablement are separate actions. Removing an asset from Performance Max reporting rejects that item; it does not turn off future generation. Disable Generation, and clear Final URL as well if URL expansion is also unwanted.

“The Final URL option is unavailable”

Performance Max requires text assets for Final URL expansion. Keep the required text-asset option selected, or turn off text customization entirely if your goal is to remove both generated text and expanded URLs.

“The option is off in one campaign, but another campaign still shows the asset”

Campaign-level controls apply only to the campaigns you selected. Recheck each Search or Performance Max campaign separately, or use the documented bulk-edit route for Performance Max when the same setting should apply to several campaigns. Account-level assets require the account-level control because they can be shared across campaigns.

When to disable everything versus one asset type

Your objective Use this action Result
Use only advertiser-written headlines and descriptions in Search Turn off the Search legacy control, or disable AI Max Text customization Future Search text customization is disabled for the selected campaign(s)
Stop all generated text in Performance Max Clear Generation under Asset Optimization > Text Customization Performance Max text-customization assets are removed from serving after the change takes effect
Stop expanded URLs but retain generated text Clear Final URL while retaining the required text-asset setting Final URL expansion is disabled; generated text remains enabled
Stop one inaccurate or unwanted Performance Max asset Remove it from asset-group reporting or the expanded Final URL tab That asset is removed, while the feature can continue creating others
Stop dynamic sitelinks, callouts or structured snippets account-wide Turn off the selected type in Account-level automated assets > Advanced settings That automated account-level asset type is disabled across its eligible campaigns

Re-enabling Search automation after using the legacy switch

Google notes that once the legacy Automatically Created Assets feature is disabled, re-enabling it requires opting in through the newer AI Max experience. If the old switch does not offer an On option, open the Search campaign’s AI Max settings and opt in to Text customization there. Review the generated assets and reports after re-enabling rather than assuming the previous legacy state has been restored.

Keep this migration detail in your change record. An operator returning to the campaign later may look for the old switch and conclude that automation cannot be restored, when the current opt-in is located under AI Max.

Operational checklist for a clean change

  1. Write down the campaign, asset type and current setting before editing.
  2. Choose the scope: Search campaign, Performance Max campaign, individual Performance Max asset or account-level automated asset type.
  3. Apply the smallest change that meets the requirement. Disable one asset when one item is the problem; disable the feature when all future generated assets are unwanted.
  4. For Performance Max, decide independently whether Generation, Final URL expansion or both should be off.
  5. Save the change and reopen the relevant settings page to confirm the value.
  6. Use the appropriate report to check status: Search ad-level and combination reports, Performance Max asset-group and expanded Final URL reports, or account-level automated asset settings.
  7. Review the resulting text and destinations for accuracy and policy compliance.

This sequence also makes troubleshooting easier because it records what was changed and avoids confusing a removed individual asset with a disabled generation setting.

Key distinction: campaign settings versus account settings

Campaign-level text customization governs generated headlines, descriptions and, in Performance Max, related Final URL expansion. Account-level automated assets govern additions such as dynamic sitelinks, callouts and structured snippets that may be shared across campaigns. An account can have both systems active at once. To fully control what appears, identify the asset’s type in reporting first, then change the setting at the same scope.

Go to Campaigns > Assets, open the Association or Associations view, choose Account-level automated assets from the three-dot menu, and open Advanced settings. Select the asset type, provide the requested reason or comments, and save the change.

Does disabling Search text customization turn off dynamic sitelinks?

No. Search text customization controls generated headlines and descriptions. Dynamic sitelinks, callouts and structured snippets use account-level automated asset controls.

Where is the Performance Max switch?

Open the Performance Max campaign’s Settings, expand Asset Optimization, and open Text Customization. Clear Generation to stop generated text, and clear Final URL if expanded Final URL assets should also stop.

Can I stop Final URL expansion without stopping generated text in Performance Max?

Yes. Leave Generation enabled and clear Final URL. Google requires text assets to remain selected for the Final URL option to be available.

Can I remove one generated Performance Max asset?

Yes. Remove the individual Google AI asset from asset-group reporting. Expanded Final URL assets use their own reporting tab. Individual removal does not disable future generation.

What happens to Performance Max assets after text customization is disabled?

Google Ads Help states that the assets are reported as Removed and no longer serve. Confirm the setting and reports after the change has propagated.

Why did a generated asset appear after I turned automation off?

Check whether you changed the correct campaign scope, whether the item is historical or manually supplied, and whether the relevant report has updated. Also verify that the item is not an account-level asset controlled elsewhere.

The Bottom Line

Identify the asset first, then use the matching scope: Search AI Max/Text customization, Performance Max Asset Optimization/Text Customization, an individual Performance Max asset report, or account-level automated asset Advanced settings. Verify the saved setting and current report status afterward; disabling generation and removing one asset are not the same action.
