The setting most often mistaken for an autoplay control is Media auto-download. Setting video downloads to Never can prevent videos from downloading automatically, but it does not stop a Status video from playing after you tap its play control.

What the official guidance actually confirms
WhatsApp’s Status documentation explains how to view and create photo and video updates. A Status can contain photos or videos and normally disappears from view after 24 hours. Those instructions do not list a preference for disabling automatic playback of Status videos.

That gives a narrower and more accurate answer than “WhatsApp can never disable autoplay”: no autoplay-off control is documented in the current official guidance reviewed. Help Center wording and app features can change, and a particular test build or platform could expose a control that is not described in those articles. If you see a setting labelled specifically for Status video playback in your own app, its wording and scope should take precedence over older instructions.

WhatsApp also says that Status itself cannot be turned off or disabled. That statement concerns removing or deactivating the Status feature; it is not an answer about whether videos inside an opened Status can autoplay. Disabling notifications, muting a contact’s Status, hiding Status updates, or changing the Status audience therefore should not be presented as autoplay controls.
Autoplay and auto-download are different controls
Playback determines whether a video starts when you view it. Auto-download determines whether WhatsApp retrieves the video file automatically over mobile data, Wi-Fi, or roaming. They affect different stages of the process.

WhatsApp’s auto-download help article makes the limitation explicit: choosing Never stops automatic video downloads, but “once you tap the play button, the video will play and continue the download process in the background.” That sentence describes downloading, not a Status autoplay preference. It means the setting can reduce unsolicited downloads and storage use while leaving playback behavior unchanged once you deliberately start a video.
How to reduce automatic video downloads
If your real concern is mobile-data use, storage, or videos arriving before you choose to watch them, change the download setting rather than searching for a nonexistent Status autoplay path. Menu labels can vary slightly between Android, iPhone, and WhatsApp releases, but the documented route is:

- Open WhatsApp.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Storage and data.
- Open Media auto-download.
- For the relevant connection type—mobile data, Wi-Fi, or roaming—set video downloading to Never, or clear video from the categories that should not download automatically.
This is a download policy, not an autoplay policy. A video may still appear in the Status viewer and may still play according to the behavior of your current app build. If you tap its play control while downloads are disabled, WhatsApp can begin downloading it in the background as playback starts.
Because the exact labels and connection categories can differ by platform, do not assume that a setting found under Storage and data is a playback switch. Look for the word download; that identifies the function it governs.
Do not apply chat-video behavior to Status
WhatsApp has separately described how video messages opened in a chat behave. In a July 27, 2023 announcement, WhatsApp said: “Videos will play automatically on mute when opened in a chat, and tapping on the video will start the sound.” This describes video messages in conversations, not videos in Status updates.

What to check in your own WhatsApp build
If you want to verify whether your installation has gained a control that is absent from the current help article, search WhatsApp’s settings manually rather than following an invented path:
- Open WhatsApp’s Settings and inspect sections whose names relate to Status, privacy, data, storage, or media.
- Read each option’s description. A genuine autoplay control should refer to video playback or playing videos automatically; “Media auto-download” refers only to downloading.
- Open a Status from a contact after changing any clearly labelled playback option, if one exists, and observe whether the behavior changes.
- Record your phone platform, WhatsApp version, and the exact wording of the option. That information is necessary if you need to ask WhatsApp support about a platform-specific behavior.
The official material reviewed does not supply an Android-only or iPhone-only autoplay procedure. Do not treat a menu path posted for one release as a universal instruction for every device.
Why common proposed fixes do not answer the question
Turning off notifications
Notifications tell you that an update exists. They do not govern what happens after you open the Status viewer. Disabling them may make updates less noticeable, but it is not a documented way to prevent a video from playing.
Muting a person’s Status
Muting changes how that contact’s updates are presented in your Status list. It does not disable playback if you open the update, and it does not create a global autoplay preference.

Changing Status privacy
Status privacy controls who can see your own updates. It has no documented effect on the playback of someone else’s Status.
Disabling Status altogether
WhatsApp’s Help Center says Status itself cannot be turned off or disabled. That is a feature-availability statement, not a workaround for video autoplay.
Using a headset or lowering volume
Audio accessories can change what you hear, but they do not stop the video from starting or prevent data from being requested. They address sound, not playback initiation.
Practical ways to avoid an unexpected playback experience
There is no documented universal switch to promise that a Status video will never start. You can nevertheless reduce unwanted consequences by separating the problem you are trying to solve:
- Trying to save mobile data: set video auto-download to Never for mobile data and roaming, then avoid tapping play unless you intend to watch.
- Trying to save storage: review the same auto-download categories and remove videos that WhatsApp has already downloaded using its storage-management tools.
- Trying to avoid sound: keep the phone muted or use the device’s volume controls; this changes audio output, not whether the video starts.
- Trying not to see a particular contact’s updates: use the available mute or audience controls, understanding that these manage visibility and notifications rather than playback.
- Trying to stop all Status activity: WhatsApp does not document a control that disables Status itself.
These are separate outcomes. Choosing the option that matches your actual goal prevents a download setting from being mistaken for a playback fix.
If your app behaves differently
App behavior can vary by operating system, release channel, account rollout, or a feature change that has not yet been reflected in help content. If your screen contains a clearly named autoplay option, note its scope: it might apply to chat videos, media previews, or another part of WhatsApp rather than Status.
If you cannot determine what an option does, check its in-app description before changing it. For a support request, include:
- Whether the video was in Status or in a chat;
- Your phone’s operating system and version;
- Your WhatsApp version and whether it is a stable, beta, or managed installation;
- Whether the video started before any tap, or only after you selected play;
- Whether the issue occurred on mobile data, Wi-Fi, or both.
Those details distinguish playback from downloading and prevent a chat-video report from being treated as a Status report. They also make it possible to identify a change in a later build without claiming that every device has the same behavior.
The answer in one sentence
As documented by WhatsApp’s current official guidance, there is no listed setting for turning off automatic playback of videos in Status updates; the available Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download controls downloads only, and a video can still play and continue downloading after you tap its play button.
