Automatic capitalization is controlled by the keyboard, not by the app in which you type. On iPhone, open Settings > General > Keyboard and switch Auto-Capitalization off. On Android, open the settings for the active keyboard: Gboard uses Text correction, while Samsung Keyboard uses More typing options and the Auto capitalize switch. Turning off this one setting does not automatically disable autocorrect, suggestions, spacing, or punctuation.
Which setting should you change?
Use the row that matches the keyboard currently displayed when you tap a text field. Android phones can have more than one keyboard installed, and the menu belongs to the active one. A Galaxy phone using Gboard will show Gboard controls rather than Samsung Keyboard controls.

Labels and locations can differ with the phone model, software version, country, and keyboard language. If a path does not match your screen, search the device’s Settings app for keyboard and then open the settings for the keyboard identified as default.
Turn off automatic capitalization on an iPhone
For the built-in iPhone keyboard
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Keyboard.
- Under the typing options, switch Auto-Capitalization off.
With the switch off, the keyboard stops automatically making the first word of a sentence uppercase and stops applying its normal capitalization behavior to proper nouns in apps that support Apple’s keyboard feature. You can still type a capital letter manually by tapping the Shift key before a letter.

For a connected Magic Keyboard
A physical keyboard has its own control. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard, then turn Auto-Capitalization off there. Changing the on-screen keyboard setting does not necessarily change the hardware-keyboard setting, so check the section that matches how you type.
What to expect in individual apps
Apple describes the option as applying when an app supports the feature. Most standard text fields follow the iPhone keyboard preference, but an app can define its own behavior. If capitalization continues in only one app while other apps remain lowercase, the app’s text field is likely overriding or supplementing the system keyboard setting.
Turn off automatic capitalization on Android
Android has no single universal keyboard menu. The first step is to identify the keyboard that appears when you type. Tap a message box, note, browser field, or search field and look at the keyboard. A gear icon usually opens that keyboard’s settings. You can also use the Settings app’s search field for the keyboard name.

Gboard
- Open any app with a text field so Gboard appears.
- Tap the gear icon on the keyboard. If the icon is hidden, tap the toolbar’s four-square or three-dot button and select Settings.
- Tap Text correction.
- Turn Auto-capitalization off.
On some phones you can reach the same screen through Android Settings by opening the on-screen keyboard settings and selecting Gboard. The exact Settings route depends on the manufacturer and Android version, but the destination inside Gboard remains Text correction.
Samsung Keyboard on a Galaxy phone
- Open Settings.
- Tap General management.
- Tap Samsung Keyboard or Samsung Keyboard settings. The wording differs by software version.
- Tap More typing options.
- Turn Auto capitalize off.
Samsung’s instructions apply to the default Samsung Keyboard. Samsung notes that screens and available options can vary by device and country, and some options may not appear on older devices or operating systems.
Another Android keyboard
If the active keyboard is not Gboard or Samsung Keyboard, open that keyboard’s own settings and look for a control named Auto-capitalization, Auto capitalize, or a similar capitalization option. Keyboard developers place this control in different sections, so searching the keyboard settings for capital is often faster than following a Samsung or Gboard path.

Keep autocorrect while disabling only capital letters
Auto-capitalization and autocorrection solve different problems. Capitalization changes letter case, usually at the beginning of a sentence or in a proper noun. Autocorrection changes a word when the keyboard believes it contains a spelling or typing error. Predictive text offers completions, auto-replace substitutes configured terms, auto-spacing inserts spaces, and auto-punctuation adds punctuation. These controls are separate in Apple’s and Samsung’s documented menus, and Gboard places capitalization within its broader Text correction section.

To stop only unwanted uppercase letters, change the capitalization switch and leave the other switches alone. Do not turn off an entire “text correction” category if the keyboard presents individual controls beneath it. Afterward, type a short sentence to verify that spelling corrections and suggestions still behave as you want.
If the switch is missing or does not work
Confirm which keyboard is active
The most common cause is changing settings for a keyboard that is not being used. On a Galaxy phone, switching from Samsung Keyboard to Gboard changes which menu controls capitalization. Open a text field, use the keyboard switcher if one is shown, and note the keyboard name. Then change the setting in that keyboard’s own preferences.

Use Settings search
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Search for keyboard.
- Open the entry that names the current keyboard or on-screen keyboard.
- Search within that page, when supported, for capital or correction.
Android menu names vary by manufacturer, so a search is more reliable than assuming every phone uses Samsung’s or Gboard’s route.
Check the physical versus on-screen keyboard
On an iPhone paired with a Magic Keyboard, the relevant option is under Hardware Keyboard. If on-screen typing is lowercase but physical-keyboard typing still begins with capitals, change the hardware setting rather than the on-screen setting.

Type two sentences in a standard text field, then test the app in which you noticed the problem. Apple qualifies its feature as applying to apps that support it, so one app may use a custom text field or its own formatting rules. A difference between apps does not necessarily mean the system switch failed.
Account for software and regional differences
Samsung states that its available screens can vary for phones sold in different countries, and older devices may lack some options. Android manufacturers also rename settings as their software changes. Install the latest available system and keyboard updates if appropriate, then search Settings again rather than relying on an older menu path.

- Open a notes, messaging, or email app with a plain text field.
- Begin a new sentence without pressing Shift.
- Confirm that the first letter remains lowercase.
- Type a misspelled word to check that autocorrection or suggestions still work if you left them enabled.
- Test a second app if the original app has unusual formatting behavior.
To restore automatic capitalization later, return to the same menu and switch the control back on. No restart is normally required; the change should apply to newly typed text as soon as the keyboard reloads its preferences.

- If you type on an iPhone Magic Keyboard, use Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard.
- If your Android keyboard has a gear icon labeled Gboard, open Text correction and disable Auto-capitalization.
- If you use the default Samsung Keyboard, open More typing options and disable Auto capitalize.
- If none of those labels appears, identify the active keyboard first and search its settings; Android does not impose one universal path.
