In the current Microsoft Teams desktop client for Windows, the reliable way to disable interface animations is to turn off Windows Animation effects: Start > Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects > Animation effects. The former Teams-specific Turn off animations option may no longer appear in the new client. If the problem is only a moving meeting background, choose None in Teams Background settings instead.
Which Teams animation do you want to stop?
“Animations” in Teams can mean several different things. Choosing the narrowest fix prevents an accessibility setting from changing motion throughout Windows.

| What is moving? | Best control | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Teams interface transitions, window motion or other Windows-rendered effects | Turn off Windows Animation effects | System-wide on Windows 10 and Windows 11 |
| An animated or distracting meeting background | Teams Background settings > None | That meeting or camera session only |
| GIF previews or animated content | Windows Animation effects, with possible side effects | May affect Teams and other applications |
| Motion on macOS, iOS or the web | Use the platform’s available accessibility controls and verify the result locally | No current dedicated, Teams-wide animation switch was established for those platforms |
The new Teams client has changed where this control lives. A Microsoft Q&A response dated May 28, 2026 reports that the older Settings > General > Turn off animations switch is absent for some current clients and identifies the Windows setting as the supported route. Teams features can roll out gradually, so menu labels can differ by build.
Turn off all Teams interface animations on Windows
This method uses Windows’ accessibility setting rather than a Teams preference. Microsoft Support describes the switch as controlling whether Windows shows animations.

- Open workspaces are great for collaboration, but not so great when the noise around you makes it hard to concentrate. Active noise cancellation substantially reduces unwanted ambient sound, so you can get focused and stay focused.
- Great for Music and Talking with immersive sound for listening to music and a noise-canceling mic that ensures that your voice is heard on the other end of a call—not the noise around you.
- On ear controls to adjust volume, start/end calls, and invoke Teams. Plus button controls for power, active noise cancellation (ANC), wireless Bluetooth pairing, and mute on/off or use the flip-to-mute mic feature.
- Certified for Microsoft Teams ensures it’s easy to pick-up or answer Teams meetings, calls, messages, and notifications with a single press to the Teams button. Or apply a longer touch to invoke Cortana voice skills.
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Accessibility.
- Select Visual effects.
- Turn Animation effects off.
The path applies to both Windows 10 and Windows 11, although the surrounding Settings layout may look slightly different. The change is normally immediate; close and reopen Teams if an already-open window still appears animated.
What this setting changes
This is a Windows-level preference, so it is broader than Teams. Microsoft’s Office guidance states that turning off Windows animations automatically turns off animations for Office apps. Other applications that honor Windows’ animation preference can change as well, including window transitions and animated-content behavior.
Why GIFs may behave differently
A Microsoft Q&A discussion associates Windows Animation effects with whether GIF previews animate in Teams. If you turn the switch off, GIF previews or similar motion may stop, remain static, or behave differently depending on the client build. That is expected side effect of a system-wide setting, not proof that Teams’ installation is damaged.

Remove only a moving meeting background
If Teams itself feels fine and the distraction is the camera background, do not change Windows animations. Teams provides a per-meeting background control.
Before you join
- Open the meeting join screen.
- Open Background settings (the control may appear with the camera and microphone options).
- Select None.
- Return to the join screen and enter the meeting.
During a meeting
- Open the meeting controls.
- Choose Background settings.
- Select None.
- Apply the choice when Teams prompts you, if a prompt appears.
None removes the background image or blur effect; it does not disable every Teams interface animation. This is the least disruptive choice when you want ordinary window motion to remain available.
Why Microsoft recommends avoiding animated backgrounds
Microsoft advises against animated, flashing or busy Teams backgrounds. Such images can make meetings harder for people who rely on lipreading and for people with epilepsy, seizures, visual-processing disorders or other conditions. A moving background can also compete with the speaker’s face and make it harder to focus.

- LIGHTWEIGHT COMFORT: Experience all-day comfort with its lightweight design and foam or leatherette ear cushions that won't weigh you down during long meetings or calls.
- EFFORTLESS SETUP: Simply plug into your laptop via USB-A or USB-C for instant use, plus easy call and volume controls for smooth call management.
- ONLINE MEETINGS THAT JUST WORK: Works with all leading online meeting platforms and certified for Microsoft Teams.
- SOLID SOUND: Powerful 28mm speakers deliver richer sound for a better audio experience.
- Use None when a plain camera view is acceptable.
- Choose a steady, low-contrast image when you need a branded or environmental background.
- Use blur when you need to hide surroundings without adding moving detail.
- Avoid rapid flashes, looping motion, high-contrast patterns and fine visual noise.
These recommendations concern the background selected for a meeting. They do not mean every Teams transition is harmful, nor do they establish a specific percentage reduction in symptoms or distraction. Microsoft has not published a universal performance or adoption figure for disabling Teams animations.

Older Teams guidance commonly pointed to a Teams-specific option under Settings > General. In the current new Teams client, that switch may be missing. The May 28, 2026 Microsoft Q&A response identifies Windows Animation effects as the supported method for Windows users instead.
Do not treat a missing toggle as an account problem or assume that reinstalling Teams will restore it. Teams capabilities are delivered by client updates and staged rollouts, so two users can see different labels temporarily. Check that you are using the current client, then use the Windows path above when your goal is to reduce interface motion.

Can you reduce motion without changing every Windows animation?
For a meeting background, yes: select None in Teams Background settings. For Teams’ general interface motion, the documented Windows route is broader. The current evidence does not establish a separate, supported Teams-only animation switch in the new Windows client.
This distinction matters when choosing a remedy:
- Choose Windows Animation effects off when you need a broad reduction in interface motion or when Teams’ former switch is unavailable.
- Choose Background settings > None when only the camera background is moving.
- Keep Windows animations on when you depend on animated content in other applications and the Teams issue is limited to one meeting background.
Platform notes: Windows, macOS, mobile and web
Windows 10 and Windows 11
The documented path is Start > Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects > Animation effects off. Because it is an operating-system preference, it can affect applications beyond Teams.

The available Teams material documents background controls on macOS but does not establish a current, dedicated macOS-wide Teams animation toggle. macOS has its own motion-related accessibility options, yet Teams’ behavior can vary by client version. If you use a macOS motion setting, verify which effects actually change in your Teams build rather than assuming Windows instructions apply.

iOS and the web
Microsoft’s Teams guidance documents background controls across Windows, macOS, iOS and the web. Open the meeting’s background controls and select None when the moving element is the camera background. The Windows Animation effects path does not apply to these platforms.
Troubleshooting when motion continues
The Animation effects switch is already off
- Confirm the setting under Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects, not a similarly named display option.
- Quit Teams completely and start it again so the client rereads the Windows preference.
- Check whether the remaining motion is a meeting background, GIF or video rather than a Teams interface transition.
The background still moves
- Open Background settings before joining or from the in-meeting controls.
- Select None, then apply the change if Teams asks for confirmation.
- If the motion comes from another participant’s video or shared content, changing your own background cannot stop it; mute or hide that content using the meeting controls available in your client.
You cannot find Background settings
Look on the pre-join screen beside camera controls or open the in-meeting control bar. Labels and placement can vary as features roll out. If the control is unavailable, update Teams through your organization’s normal software channel and test again; managed devices may restrict which features appear.
GIFs or other apps changed after the fix
That is consistent with the Windows setting’s broader scope. Re-enable Animation effects if you need animated content elsewhere, then use Background settings > None for the narrower Teams problem.

Start with the smallest change that addresses the symptom. Remove a moving background first when that is the only source of discomfort. Use the Windows switch when interface motion across Teams is the problem or when the old Teams-only control is unavailable. Tell meeting participants when a plain or blurred background is intentional, especially if a busy scene could interfere with lipreading or visual focus.
There is no published universal performance gain from disabling animations, so choose the setting for motion comfort, accessibility or distraction reduction rather than expecting a guaranteed speed increase. The result can also depend on your Teams build, Windows version and organization-managed policies.
