On desktop, Google Chat provides an accessibility animation control with three choices: on, off, or use system settings. Open Chat settings, find the Accessibility or Animation section, and choose off. This is a broader animation control, so it may stop more than animated emoji. On a phone or tablet, Google Chat appears to follow the device’s accessibility animation settings rather than offering a consistently documented in-app switch.
What the setting actually turns off
Google’s accessibility documentation lists an animation preference in Google Chat as Animation on/off/use system settings. Choosing off is intended to disable Chat animations, which can include animated emoji and other motion effects. It is not documented as an emoji-only filter.

The setting is useful if motion causes discomfort, distracts you during work, increases visual clutter, or creates an accessibility problem. If you still want some motion, use system settings lets Chat follow the animation preference configured in your operating system.

Do not confuse this control with Google Messages’ separate Show expressive animations option. Google Messages and Google Chat are different products, and changing the Messages preference does not turn off animation in Chat.

Turn off animated emoji in Google Chat on a computer
Google’s help page confirms the control but does not publish a complete, fixed click-by-click path. Interface labels can therefore differ between the web app, the standalone Chat app, and account rollouts. Use the following route as a navigation guide rather than as a promise that every screen will look identical.

Open Google Chat in your browser at the Chat web app, or open the standalone Google Chat application if you use it.

Open Chat settings. Look for a gear icon, a settings command, or a menu attached to your account or Chat navigation.

Within settings, look for Accessibility, Animation, or a similarly named motion section.

Find the control whose choices are described as Animation on/off/use system settings.

Select off. If the interface offers an explicit save or apply button, use it; otherwise, the preference may take effect as soon as you select it.

Return to a conversation containing animated emoji and check whether the motion has stopped. You may need to reopen the conversation or reload the Chat page before an already-rendered message reflects the new preference.

The wording supplied by Google is the most reliable way to identify the correct option. If you see settings for themes, density, notifications, or conversation layout but no animation choice, continue looking under Accessibility rather than changing unrelated appearance options.
If you cannot find the animation control

Confirm that you are in Google Chat settings, not the settings for Google Messages, Gmail notifications, or your browser.

Expand collapsed sections in the settings panel. Accessibility controls may be grouped under an advanced or more-options heading.

Try the standalone Chat app and the Chat web app separately. Google documents appearance behavior across these surfaces, but it does not explicitly state that the animation preference has identical scope everywhere.

Reload Chat after changing account, workspace, or browser profiles. A managed work or school account can also expose a different interface from a personal account.

If your organization controls Chat settings, ask an administrator whether accessibility preferences are restricted. Do not assume that a missing control means your browser is malfunctioning.
Desktop surfaces and what is known about scope
Google distinguishes among Chat at chat.google.com, the standalone Chat app, and Chat embedded in Gmail. Its appearance documentation says appearance settings apply to chat.google.com and the standalone app, but not to Chat in Gmail. That statement is specifically about appearance settings; Google does not establish that the animation preference follows exactly the same rule.

If animation is gone at chat.google.com but still appears in Gmail, that does not prove the setting failed. The two surfaces may read preferences differently, and Google has not documented the animation preference’s behavior in Gmail.

Turn off animation on Android or iPhone
Mobile guidance is less definite. A Google Chat Product Expert reported that mobile Chat appears to use the device’s Accessibility settings. Google’s iPhone and iPad accessibility documentation also lists Toggle animation among accessibility features, but the page does not provide device-specific steps for this Chat use case.
Use this general procedure, adapting the names to your phone or tablet:

Open the device’s main Settings app, not Google Chat’s notification settings.

Open Accessibility, then look for a motion, animation, or visual-effects control. The exact label and location vary by operating-system version and manufacturer.

Turn off the device option that reduces or disables animations, or enable the equivalent reduced-motion setting.

Close and reopen Google Chat, then check a conversation with animated emoji.

If the change affects the whole device but not Chat, look for an accessibility or animation setting inside the mobile Chat app as well. The available in-app controls can vary by release.
This is device-dependent guidance, not a guaranteed universal Chat switch. A phone may apply its reduced-motion preference to some apps but not others. If Chat continues to animate, verify the operating-system setting, restart the app, and check whether the message is actually in Google Chat rather than Google Messages.

The available Google documentation confirms that animation accessibility controls exist, but it does not give a complete Android or iOS path for disabling Chat animation. Product Expert guidance describes mobile behavior as appearing to follow device Accessibility settings. Because manufacturers and operating-system versions use different labels, an exact sequence copied from one phone could mislead users on another.
Choosing between Off and Use system settings

Open a conversation where a participant has recently sent an animated emoji or another visibly moving Chat element.

Reload the page or restart the app if the existing message continues moving. Already-loaded content may not redraw immediately.

Send or receive a new animated emoji and watch whether it remains static.

Repeat the check in each surface you use regularly: the Chat web app, the standalone app, and Chat in Gmail. Google has not confirmed that one preference controls all three.
A static emoji does not mean the message was deleted or converted. The message remains in the conversation; only the motion behavior has changed.

Accessibility and workplace considerations
Disabling animation is a legitimate accessibility adjustment, not merely a cosmetic preference. Motion can be distracting or uncomfortable, especially in a busy team space where several animated reactions appear in quick succession. The explicit off choice is appropriate when Chat itself should remain still.
Use system settings is preferable when you already maintain a reduced-motion policy on your computer or phone and want compatible apps to respect it. Because Google does not document identical scope across every Chat surface, verify the setting anywhere you access work conversations.
Turning off animation does not remove emoji, reactions, message history, or notifications. It changes presentation. Other participants’ settings are unaffected; each user controls animation for their own Chat experience.

A Google Chat Community Product Expert, PeggyK, wrote on November 13, 2025: “All animations in Google Chat can be turned off in the desktop Accessibility settings.” The same community response says mobile Chat appears to use device Accessibility settings. This is secondary guidance, not an official promise about every phone.
