How to turn off Android’s VPN key icon by disconnecting or removing a VPN

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To remove Android’s key-shaped VPN icon, open Settings > Network and internet > VPN, tap the controls beside the active VPN, and turn it off. That disconnects the current VPN while keeping its saved setup. If you want the phone to forget the setup entirely, choose Forget instead. On supported Pixel phones using VPN by Google, the equivalent temporary control is Pause VPN.

The choice matters: disconnecting stops the current tunnel, Forget removes the saved configuration, and turning off Always-on VPN prevents Android from starting the connection again automatically. The exact labels and menu location can vary by Android version and phone manufacturer.

What the VPN key icon means

Android Developers describes it precisely: “The status bar includes a VPN (key) icon to indicate an active connection.” The icon is therefore a status indicator, not a separate app or a warning that must be dismissed. It remains visible while Android considers a VPN connection active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Removing the icon requires changing the VPN state. Closing a notification, swiping down the quick settings panel, or restarting an app does not necessarily disconnect the VPN. Use the VPN controls in Settings, or the controls supplied by the VPN app when the connection is app-managed.

Disconnecting changes how the phone’s traffic is handled. Once the VPN is off, traffic is no longer sent through that VPN connection. If you still need the VPN’s privacy, security, or work-network access, turn it off only for the period you intend and reconnect it afterward.

Choose the action that matches your goal

What you want Control to use What happens to the saved setup What may happen later
Hide the icon for now and keep the VPN available Turn the VPN off It remains saved You can reconnect from the same VPN entry
Erase the VPN entry from the phone Forget The saved configuration is removed You must configure it again to use it
Temporarily stop VPN by Google on a supported Pixel Pause VPN The VPN remains configured It can resume when the phone connects to a different network
Stop automatic reconnection Turn off Always-on VPN The VPN setup remains unless you also choose Forget Android should no longer start or maintain that VPN through the Always-on setting

If you are unsure, use the ordinary off switch first. It is reversible and does not require you to remember server, account, or certificate details later.

Turn off a VPN without removing its setup

These are the general Android steps. Android Help notes that some of the instructions apply only to Android 14 and later, and manufacturers can rename or rearrange menus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open Network and internet, then VPN. On some phones the section may be named Connections, More connection settings, or something similar.
  3. If you cannot see a VPN entry, use the Settings search field and search for VPN. Select the result that opens the system VPN page rather than a general web search.
  4. Tap the settings control, usually a gear icon or an information button, beside the VPN that is currently connected.
  5. Use the switch or status control to turn the VPN off. Confirm if Android presents a confirmation dialog.

The key icon should disappear after Android finishes disconnecting. The VPN entry itself stays in Settings, so its profile, certificate, or app association can be used again. If the icon remains for a short time, wait for the status to refresh, then open the VPN page again and check whether the connection is still shown as active.

What turning it off does not do

  • It does not delete the VPN profile.
  • It does not uninstall the VPN app that created the profile.
  • It does not prevent a later manual connection.
  • It does not necessarily stop an Always-on configuration from reconnecting.

Remove a saved VPN with Forget

Use Forget when you no longer want this VPN configuration stored on the phone. This is appropriate for an old workplace profile, a test connection, or a service you will not use again.

  1. Open Settings > Network and internet > VPN, or search Settings for VPN.
  2. Tap the settings control beside the VPN entry you want to remove.
  3. If it is connected, turn it off first when the page presents separate disconnect and removal controls.
  4. Tap Forget, then confirm the deletion.

Forgetting removes the saved VPN setup rather than merely ending the current session. The exact information deleted depends on how the profile was created; Android may remove the server address, authentication choices, certificates, and other profile settings associated with that entry. You will need the original setup information to add it again.

When Forget is the wrong choice

Do not choose Forget merely because you want the icon gone for a few minutes. If you may need the connection again, turning it off preserves the setup and avoids re-entering details. If a company or school supplied the profile, check with its administrator before deleting it; the profile may be required for access to internal services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevent the VPN from turning itself back on

If the icon returns after you switch the VPN off, check Always-on VPN. Android can use this setting to start a VPN when the device boots and keep the connection running. An Always-on profile can therefore make a normal disconnect look temporary.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Network and internet > VPN, or search Settings for VPN.
  3. Open the settings control for the VPN that keeps reconnecting.
  4. Turn off Always-on VPN, if that option is available.
  5. Return to the connection status and turn the VPN off if it is still active.

Android Help notes that a VPN configured through an app may not expose the Always-on option on the system page. In that case, open the VPN app and look for its auto-connect, startup, or persistent-connection control. The wording and location are controlled by that app, so do not assume every app uses the same label.

Always-on and failed-connection notifications

When an Always-on connection fails, Android can show a persistent notification. Android Help says turning off Always-on for that VPN clears that notification. That notification is different from the key icon: the notification reports a failed Always-on attempt, while the key icon reports an active connection.

Pause VPN by Google on a supported Pixel

Supported Pixel phones with Google’s built-in VPN use a separate control. Open Settings > Network and internet > VPN > VPN by Google, then use Pause VPN in the connection-status panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pause is a temporary, per-network action. Google’s support guidance says the pause lasts until the phone connects to a different network; when the network changes, the VPN may resume. That makes Pause useful when a particular Wi-Fi network or service does not work correctly through the VPN, but it is not equivalent to deleting the VPN or permanently disabling its automatic behavior.

Pause versus turn off

  • Pause VPN: temporarily suspends VPN by Google and can end when the network changes.
  • Turn off: disconnects the active VPN while leaving the ordinary VPN setup available.
  • Forget: removes a saved VPN configuration from the device.

If you need the VPN to remain off across network changes, use the persistent off and Always-on controls available on your Pixel rather than relying only on Pause.

Why the key icon comes back

Always-on VPN is still enabled

This is the most direct explanation when the icon disappears and then returns without you opening a VPN app. Revisit the VPN entry and disable Always-on, then disconnect the active session.

The VPN app is managing reconnection

Some VPNs are configured through their own apps. Android Help notes that app-configured VPNs may not show the Always-on switch in the system VPN page. Open the app that created the connection and inspect its connection or startup settings. If the app offers no way to stop automatic reconnection, its help or support channel is the appropriate place to ask for the exact control for that version.

The phone is managed by an employer or school

A work or school administrator can control VPN configuration on a managed device. The standard Settings page may let you view a profile without allowing you to remove or permanently disable it. If a switch is unavailable, greyed out, or immediately restored, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly deleting the profile.

You used Pause on a Pixel

VPN by Google can resume after the phone connects to a different network. If the icon returns after changing from mobile data to Wi-Fi, or from one Wi-Fi network to another, that behavior is consistent with the temporary nature of Pause.

What to do when the VPN menu is missing

  1. Open Settings and search for VPN. Search is often faster than guessing the manufacturer’s category name.
  2. Try both Network and internet and the phone’s connection-focused section, such as Connections.
  3. Check the Android version. Android Help identifies some of these instructions as Android 14-and-later steps, so older releases may use different labels or screens.
  4. Look for the VPN app that created the connection. An app-managed VPN may expose disconnect and auto-connect controls only inside that app.
  5. If the setting still cannot be found, consult the phone manufacturer’s support instructions. Android Help specifically recommends contacting the device maker when the VPN setting is not available.

A missing menu does not prove that no VPN is active. The status-bar key can still indicate an active connection, and a VPN app may provide the only visible control.

Troubleshooting after you disconnect

The icon remains immediately

  • Open the VPN page again and verify that the status says disconnected.
  • Wait briefly for the status bar to refresh.
  • Check whether another VPN entry is active; phones can contain more than one saved profile.
  • If the connection is app-managed, open that app and disconnect from its own status screen.

The icon disappears but returns after restart

Check Always-on VPN first. Android can start an Always-on connection when the phone boots. If no system option is shown, inspect the VPN app or ask the administrator of a managed device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A persistent notification remains

Determine whether the notification reports a failed Always-on connection rather than an active VPN. Android Help says disabling Always-on for that VPN clears the failure notification. Removing a notification alone does not change the VPN’s connection state.

Forget is unavailable

The profile may be controlled by a device administrator, or the app that created it may require removal from inside the app. A managed profile can be intentionally protected from user deletion. Contact the organization responsible for the phone’s management.

VPN by Google resumes on another network

That is the documented behavior of Pause. Use the regular VPN and Always-on controls if you need a longer-lasting disconnect, or accept that a network change can end the pause.

Disconnecting safely: a practical decision guide

Situation Best first action Reason
You are troubleshooting a website or app that fails only while the VPN is active Turn the VPN off You can test the connection without deleting the profile and reconnect afterward.
You sold, returned, or reset a phone and want an old VPN removed Turn it off, then choose Forget The active session ends and the saved configuration is erased.
You need a short exception on a supported Pixel Use Pause VPN It is designed for a temporary suspension, but it can end after a network change.
The VPN reconnects after every manual disconnect Disable Always-on and check the VPN app Automatic startup or app-controlled reconnection is overriding the one-time disconnect.
The phone belongs to an employer or school Ask the administrator before removing anything Management policy may control the profile and may require the VPN for work access.

Android version and manufacturer differences

The generic route in Android Help is Settings > Network and internet > VPN, but Android does not present an identical interface on every phone. A manufacturer can place VPN under another connection category, change the capitalization of labels, or show a different icon for the settings control.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android Help says some of the documented steps apply only to Android 14 and later. Treat the wording in this guide as a map to the relevant controls, not as a guarantee that every older phone will display the same sequence. Use Settings search when the category names differ, and use the manufacturer’s support documentation if the search returns no VPN setting.

Labels that can be easy to confuse

  • Turn off, Disconnect, or an off switch ends the current connection.
  • Forget removes the saved VPN setup.
  • Always-on VPN controls automatic startup and persistence.
  • Pause VPN is the temporary Pixel control for VPN by Google.

Read the confirmation text before tapping a destructive option. If Android says the profile will be forgotten, it is not merely a temporary disconnect.

What changes when the VPN is off

The key icon is a useful confirmation that Android no longer reports the connection as active, but the visual change is not the only consequence. Any protection, routing, or access provided by that VPN stops when the tunnel is disconnected. A private network profile used for work may no longer provide access to internal resources, and a personal VPN service will no longer carry traffic through its VPN connection.

Reconnect before using a service that requires the VPN. If you are on an untrusted network and depend on the VPN for your own security policy, avoid treating the missing icon as an invitation to leave the VPN disabled indefinitely. The right setting depends on whether you are troubleshooting, removing an obsolete profile, or intentionally changing how the phone connects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick checklist

  • Open Settings > Network and internet > VPN, or search Settings for VPN.
  • Use the control beside the active VPN.
  • Choose the ordinary off or disconnect control to keep the setup.
  • Choose Forget only when you want the saved configuration removed.
  • Turn off Always-on VPN if the connection returns automatically.
  • On a supported Pixel, remember that Pause VPN can end after a network change.
  • If the menu or controls are absent, check the VPN app, Android version, manufacturer instructions, or device administrator.
