Android’s ad controls and its advertising ID are separate settings. To turn off the three current Ads privacy features, open Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads > Ads privacy, then switch off Ad topics, App-suggested ads, and Ad measurement individually. To change the advertising ID, use Settings > Privacy > Ads, where supported, and choose Reset Advertising ID or Delete Advertising ID. Menu names vary by Android version, manufacturer and language, so search Settings for “Ads” or “Advertising ID” if a route is missing.
These actions reduce Android-mediated personalization and measurement; they do not remove advertisements from apps or erase every app’s own profile and tracking data.

What Android’s ad privacy controls actually cover
Android’s current Ads privacy page contains three independent controls. They govern information that Android can provide to participating apps for advertising and measurement. They do not constitute a universal switch for every advertising practice on the phone.
| Control | What it does | What switching it off changes |
|---|---|---|
| Ad topics | Android records topics inferred from the apps you use. Participating apps may ask Android for those topics. | Android stops providing the feature after you turn off its Allow setting. You can also remove individual topics. |
| App-suggested ads | Apps can recommend and store ad suggestions in Android for possible use in other apps. | Android stops mediating this use. You can block a particular app’s suggestions, which deletes the associated suggestion data. |
| Ad measurement | Apps may share limited event data, such as when an ad was shown, to measure campaign performance. | Turning off Allow ad measurement disables this Android feature. |
Google’s Android documentation says that Android can share up to three topics at a time with an app. Removing one topic prevents Android from sharing that topic again, but ads related to it may still appear. Android says ad topics are deleted after four weeks. App-suggestion data is also deleted regularly, although Google does not give a fixed interval on the help page. Read the official instructions at Manage your ad privacy settings on Android.

Before you change anything
Decide whether you want to disable a feature globally, remove one item, or change the identifier. Those are different actions:
- Turning off an Allow switch stops the corresponding Android feature from operating for your device.
- Removing an individual topic prevents Android from sharing that topic again, while leaving the rest of the feature available unless you disable it.
- Blocking an individual app in App-suggested ads deletes that app’s stored suggestion data, but does not suppress every ad associated with the app.
- Resetting the advertising ID gives supported apps a new identifier. Deleting it removes the identifier instead.
If your goal is simply to stop seeing advertisements, these settings are not an ad blocker. They limit particular data-sharing and measurement functions; ad slots in free apps, games and websites can remain.
Turn off all three Ads privacy features
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap Google.
- Choose All services.
- Under Privacy & security, tap Ads.
- Open Ads privacy.
- Open each control and turn its Allow setting off. The three controls are Ad topics, App-suggested ads and Ad measurement.
The controls are independent. Turning off one does not automatically turn off the other two, so check each page before leaving Settings. On some phones, an item may be absent because the feature is not fully available yet or apps have not begun using it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Disable Ad topics
Open Ad topics and switch off its Allow option. Android creates topics from the apps you use, and a participating app can request them. Google says Android shares up to three topics with an app at one time.
If the page lists topics, you may remove an individual topic instead. Removing a topic stops Android from sharing that topic again, but it does not prevent advertisements connected with the subject. Android says stored ad topics are deleted after four weeks. That timing is a cleanup period for the topic data, not a promise that an ad related to the topic will disappear immediately.
Disable App-suggested ads
Open App-suggested ads and switch off Allow. Apps can recommend ad suggestions that Android stores for possible use in other apps. Disabling the feature prevents Android from accepting and mediating that use.
If you block a particular app on this page, Android deletes the suggestion data associated with that app. The block applies to the app’s stored suggestions, not to every advertising system the app or another provider might use. Ads related to the app can therefore still appear through other mechanisms.

Open Ad measurement and turn off Allow ad measurement. This stops the Android feature that lets apps share limited information, such as the time an ad was displayed, for performance measurement. It does not stop an app from showing the ad itself or from applying settings and analytics that are outside this Android feature.

Reset or delete the Android advertising ID
The advertising ID is a separate, app-accessible identifier. Changing it does not replace the three Ads privacy switches, and disabling those switches does not automatically reset or delete the identifier. You can turn off the privacy features, change the identifier, do both, or do neither depending on your preference.
Reset the identifier
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy.
- Tap Ads.
- Choose Reset Advertising ID.
- Confirm when Android asks.
A reset creates a new advertising ID for supported Google Play services devices. It is appropriate when you want to discard the existing identifier while continuing to provide an identifier to apps that use one. Resetting is not the same as asking every app to delete its own account or activity records.
Delete the identifier
- Follow Settings > Privacy > Ads.
- Tap Delete Advertising ID.
- Confirm the deletion.
Google says that, on supported devices with Google Play services, deletion removes the advertising ID and attempts by apps to access it return a string of zeros. Google also warns that apps can have their own settings that affect the advertising you see. Deletion therefore does not erase app-level profiles or guarantee non-personalized ads. The documented options are described in Advertising ID.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Choice | Result | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Reset Advertising ID | Replaces the current identifier with a new one. | You want a fresh identifier rather than removing identifier access entirely. |
| Delete Advertising ID | Removes the identifier; supported Google Play services devices return zeros to access attempts. | You do not want an advertising identifier available to apps, subject to device support and app-specific behavior. |
A deleted identifier should not be treated as recoverable. If Android later offers an advertising-ID option again, it can provide a new value; it does not restore the old one.
Why your menus may not match these paths
Google publishes more than one help path because Android releases and device software expose different Settings layouts. The current Android Ads privacy instructions use Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads > Ads privacy, while the advertising-ID instructions use Settings > Privacy > Ads. A manufacturer may move either entry, rename a heading or place it under a different privacy subsection.
If you cannot see the documented route:
- Use Settings’ search field and search for Ads, Advertising ID or Ad privacy.
- Search from the main Settings screen rather than inside the Google settings page.
- Check that Google Play services and the phone’s system software are up to date, then search again.
- On older Android versions, Google documents Settings > Privacy > Advanced > Ads > Opt out of Ads Personalization. That older label is not the same as the newer three-feature Ads privacy page.
Google notes that a feature may not appear until it is fully available on the device and apps have begun using it. Labels also vary by localization. The Android help page at Manage your ad privacy settings on Android is the best reference for the current feature names.
What changes after you switch the controls off
Ads can still appear
Turning off Ad topics, App-suggested ads and Ad measurement does not remove ad slots from free apps, websites or games. You may continue to see ads because an app can choose ads using its own systems, contextual information or settings that are independent of Android’s controls.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Removed topics and blocked apps are not ad blockers
Removing an Ad topic stops Android from sharing that topic again; it does not prevent ads related to the topic. Blocking an app’s suggestions removes the associated suggestion data, but it does not block all advertisements related to that app. These are controls over Android-mediated data sharing, not filters that hide matching creative.

Resetting is not erasing every profile
A reset changes only the advertising ID. Deleting it removes that identifier where Google’s supported behavior applies. Neither action guarantees that an app has deleted information it collected under its own account, login or privacy policy. Google’s Play Console guidance explicitly says that apps may have settings that affect the types of ads shown; see Advertising ID.
Google ad personalization is a separate layer
Google also documents controls for personalized ads in its privacy guidance. Those controls govern Google’s ad-personalization choices and do not override every third-party app’s practices. See About privacy and personalized ads for Google’s explanation of that layer.
A practical order for changing the settings
Use this sequence if your goal is to reduce Android-mediated personalization as far as the documented controls allow:
- Open Ads privacy and turn off all three Allow switches that are present.
- Review the Ad topics list and remove any topics you do not want retained for sharing.
- Review App-suggested ads and block individual apps if you want their stored suggestions removed.
- Return to Settings > Privacy > Ads and choose either Reset Advertising ID or Delete Advertising ID.
- Open frequently used apps’ own privacy or advertising settings. These controls are app-specific, so Android’s switches cannot change them for you.
- Review Google’s account-level personalized-ad settings separately if you also want to change how Google chooses ads.
- After making changes, revisit the pages and confirm that each switch remains off. A system update, device migration or restored settings can alter what is displayed.
Troubleshooting common problems
“Ads privacy” is not listed
The feature may not yet be available on that Android build, or the phone may use a different Settings layout. Search Settings for Ads and check the Google and Privacy sections separately. Google says feature lists can depend on full availability and app adoption.
Only one or two controls appear
Ad topics, App-suggested ads and Ad measurement are separate features. Google does not promise that every phone will show all of them immediately. Turn off every control that is present; do not assume a missing control is disabled merely because another one is off.
The advertising-ID buttons are missing
Search Settings for Advertising ID and verify that you are looking under Privacy > Ads, not only under the Google Ads privacy page. Device software, Android version and Google Play services support determine which choices are exposed. If only an older Opt out of Ads Personalization entry is available, it is the legacy route documented by Google.
Ads remain personalized after the change
First confirm that all three Ads privacy switches are off and that you completed the reset or deletion confirmation. Then check the individual app’s privacy settings and account-level ad settings. Android’s documentation does not promise that these changes make every ad non-personalized, and an app may use information unrelated to Android’s advertising ID.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou want to undo the change
Return to the same page and turn the relevant Allow switch back on. A deleted advertising ID is different: deletion does not restore the old value. If your device offers an advertising-ID option again, Android can provide a new identifier; the previous identifier should not be treated as recoverable.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Stopping after one switch: The three Ads privacy controls are independent, so disabling Ad topics alone leaves App-suggested ads and Ad measurement unchanged.
- Confusing topic removal with ad blocking: Removing a topic limits future sharing of that topic; it does not filter ads about the topic.
- Assuming reset means deletion: Resetting supplies a new identifier. Choose Delete Advertising ID when you want the identifier removed on a supported device.
- Expecting app history to vanish: Neither identifier action instructs every app to erase information stored under its own account or policy.
- Assuming every phone is identical: Android version, manufacturer software, language, Google Play services support and feature availability can change both labels and menus.
- Interpreting continued ads as a failed setting: Ads can continue through contextual or app-controlled systems even when Android’s documented switches are off.
What these settings cannot promise
- They cannot remove all advertisements from an app.
- They cannot force every app to follow the same privacy controls.
- They cannot erase every account-based, app-specific or previously collected advertising profile.
- They cannot guarantee that ads will never relate to a topic or app you removed.
- They cannot make every Android phone display identical menu names or feature lists.
- They cannot guarantee that an app will stop all measurement or analytics unrelated to Android’s Ad measurement feature.
Google’s Android documentation describes the controls as ways to manage Android’s ad topics, app suggestions and measurement features, while its Play Console documentation explains reset and deletion behavior for the advertising ID. The separate Ads guidance provides additional context on how advertising identifiers and app behavior interact.
Frequently asked questions
Does turning off Ads privacy remove ads?
No. It limits specific Android-mediated personalization and measurement features. Apps can still display ads and can use their own settings, contextual information or other systems.
How many Ad topics can Android share?
Google says Android shares up to three topics at a time with an app. Removing a topic stops Android from sharing that topic again, although related ads may still appear.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How long does Android keep Ad topics?
Android says ad topics are deleted after four weeks. That retention statement does not promise that ads connected with a deleted topic will stop immediately.
Should I reset or delete my advertising ID?
Reset when you want to discard the current identifier and continue using a new one. Delete when you do not want an advertising identifier available to apps, subject to device and Google Play services support. Neither option erases every app-level profile.
What happens when the advertising ID is deleted?
On supported devices with Google Play services, Google says the identifier is removed and access attempts return a string of zeros. Apps may still have independent settings that influence advertising.
Why can’t I find the same menus?
Manufacturers, Android releases, localization and feature availability change Settings layouts. Search the main Settings screen for “Ads,” “Advertising ID” or “Ad privacy,” and check both Google and Privacy sections.
Can I turn the controls back on?
Return to Ads privacy and enable the relevant Allow switch. A deleted advertising ID is not restored; a later identifier, if offered, is new.

Bottom line
Turn off Ad topics, App-suggested ads and Ad measurement from Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads > Ads privacy. Then separately choose Reset Advertising ID or Delete Advertising ID under Settings > Privacy > Ads. Search Settings when your phone uses different labels, and expect ads to continue because these settings limit Android-mediated personalization and measurement rather than blocking every app’s advertising system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off Android’s Ads privacy features block advertisements?
No. The controls limit Android-mediated topics, app suggestions and measurement. Apps and websites can still show ads through their own systems or contextual information.
What is the difference between resetting and deleting the advertising ID?
Resetting replaces the current identifier with a new one. Deleting removes it on supported Google Play services devices; access attempts then return zeros. Neither action erases every app-level profile.
Why is Ads privacy missing from my phone?
Android menus vary by version, manufacturer and language, and Google says features may not appear until fully available and used by apps. Search Settings for Ads, Ad privacy or Advertising ID.
Will removing an Ad topic stop related ads?
No. Removing a topic stops Android from sharing that topic again, but Google says ads related to it may still appear.
Can I undo a deleted advertising ID?
The old value is not restored. If the device later offers an advertising ID, Android can provide a new identifier.
Do these settings erase data held by individual apps?
No. Apps can maintain their own settings, accounts and profiles. Review each app’s privacy controls separately.

The Bottom Line
Disable the three Ads privacy features separately, then reset or delete the advertising ID under the separate Privacy > Ads menu. Because Android builds and apps differ, verify the labels on your phone and do not expect these controls to remove every ad or app-level profile.
