How to Turn Off Alexa’s Hands-Free Access on an Amazon Fire Tablet

If you want your Fire tablet to stop reacting to the Alexa wake word, open Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode and switch it off. On compatible models, you can also use the Quick Actions panel or hold Volume Up and Volume Down together for three seconds. If what you are seeing is the full-screen Alexa display, turn off Show Mode separately.

“Access to your screen” can mean two different Alexa controls

Amazon’s Fire-tablet documentation does not describe one master switch called “screen access.” The phrase usually refers to one of two behaviors:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Control What it changes What remains available
Alexa Hands-Free Mode Stops the tablet from responding to the Alexa wake word. In Show Mode, it also stops motion detection through the camera. Outside Show Mode, Alexa can still be opened by pressing and holding the Home button.
Show Mode Leaves the full-screen visual Alexa experience and returns the tablet to its normal interface. Alexa may still be available through the normal activation method unless Hands-Free Mode is also off.

Start with Hands-Free Mode if your concern is an unexpected response to “Alexa,” a blue recording indicator, or the tablet reacting while you are not touching it. Start with Show Mode if the tablet has become a clock, photo display, or visual Alexa dashboard. You may need to change both settings.

Turn off Alexa hands-free activation from Settings

This is the clearest method on a compatible Fire tablet. Menu names can vary by model, Fire OS version, and whether the tablet is currently in Show Mode.

#1 Best Overall

  • Thin, light, durable — Tap into entertainment from anywhere with a lightweight, durable design and strengthened glass made from aluminosilicate glass. As measured in a tumble test, Fire HD 10 is 2.7 times as durable as the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 (2022).

  • Ready when inspiration strikes — With 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, the Made for Amazon Stylus Pen (sold separately) offers a natural writing experience that responds to your handwriting. Use it to write, sketch in apps like OneNote, and more.
  1. Unlock the tablet and open Settings.
  2. Tap Alexa.
  3. Open Hands-Free Mode.
  4. Turn the switch off.

After the switch is off, the tablet should no longer respond to the Alexa wake word. In Show Mode, it should also stop detecting motion in view of the camera for hands-free interaction. The change affects activation; it does not uninstall Alexa or erase existing recordings.

Confirm the switch changed

Lock the screen briefly, then wake it without saying the wake word. If you want to test the setting, do not press the Home button while testing: holding Home is a separate way to open Alexa and can make it appear that hands-free activation is still enabled. The absence of a wake-word response confirms the relevant setting is off.

Before troubleshooting, identify the behavior

Notice exactly what happened. A spoken response to “Alexa” points to Hands-Free Mode. A screen that continuously shows visual cards, photos, a clock, or Alexa controls points to Show Mode. A blue line or tone means an Alexa request is actively being recorded and sent. Concern about Amazon collecting general tablet-use information belongs in the device privacy settings, not necessarily in the Alexa menu. Identifying the symptom first prevents changing the wrong control.

Other ways to disable Hands-Free Mode

Use Quick Actions

Swipe down from the top edge to open Quick Actions. The control’s wording depends on the tablet’s current mode:

  • In Show Mode: use the Alexa Microphone/Camera control.
  • Outside Show Mode: use the Alexa Hands Free control.

Tap the control so it shows that hands-free access is off. If the tile is not visible, use the Settings path instead; Quick Actions can differ between Fire tablet models and software releases. If the first swipe only shows a short row of controls, swipe down again or expand the panel when that option is offered.

Use the physical-button shortcut

Press and hold Volume Up and Volume Down at the same time for three seconds. This shortcut is useful when the screen is busy or the Alexa menu is difficult to reach. Release both buttons after the three-second interval and check the Alexa hands-free indicator or Settings page. The shortcut changes Hands-Free Mode; it does not, by itself, erase recordings or alter the tablet’s wider privacy choices.

Exit Show Mode separately

Show Mode is a visual presentation mode, not another name for Hands-Free Mode. It can be active while hands-free Alexa is on or off.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen.
  2. Find the Show Mode switch in the controls.
  3. Toggle it to off.

Amazon also documents the voice command “Alexa, exit Show Mode.” Use that command only if you are comfortable allowing Alexa to hear and process the request. If you are trying to prevent any wake-word activation, use the swipe-and-toggle method after disabling Hands-Free Mode.

Why leaving Show Mode may not be enough

Turning Show Mode off removes the full-screen visual Alexa interface, but it does not necessarily disable the wake word in the ordinary tablet interface. If the tablet still answers when you say “Alexa,” return to Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode and turn that switch off as well. Conversely, switching off Hands-Free Mode does not necessarily remove a currently displayed Show Mode screen; use the Show Mode control for that symptom.

What changes when Hands-Free Mode is off

  • The tablet no longer uses hands-free wake-word activation.
  • While Show Mode is active, motion detection in view of the camera for that hands-free experience is disabled.
  • Outside Show Mode, pressing and holding the Home button can still open Alexa.
  • Alexa remains installed and available through any activation method that the tablet still permits.
  • Turning the switch off does not delete earlier voice recordings or change every Amazon privacy preference.

Amazon’s Fire-tablet FAQ puts the remaining access plainly: “If you turn off Alexa hands-free, you will still be able to access Alexa when your tablet is not in Show Mode by pressing and holding the Home button.” That behavior is intentional, not a sign that the switch failed.

This distinction matters if several people use the tablet. Turning off the wake word prevents an accidental spoken launch, but someone who can operate the tablet can still deliberately hold Home. If you need Alexa unavailable through that manual route too, Hands-Free Mode is not a complete Alexa-removal or account-control setting; it only governs the hands-free behavior described above.

How the tablet handles wake-word audio

Amazon says compatible Fire tablets perform keyword spotting on the device. The tablet listens locally for the configured wake word rather than continuously sending every sound to the cloud. When the wake word is detected—or when you press and hold Home to open Alexa—the tablet streams the request to Amazon’s cloud service. Amazon says the stream can include a fraction of a second of audio from before the wake word.

A blue line or blue indicator appears while the tablet is recording and sending a request. A short tone signals when streaming starts and ends. These indicators describe an active Alexa request; they are not evidence that the tablet is continuously uploading all nearby audio.

Amazon also says users can review or delete Alexa recordings, including by voice. That recording-management feature is separate from the Hands-Free Mode switch. Disabling hands-free activation prevents a future wake-word trigger, while recording controls address audio that may already have been saved.

What to do about a recording you already noticed

If a blue indicator appeared or Alexa answered unexpectedly, first turn off Hands-Free Mode so another wake-word launch does not occur. Then use Alexa’s recording-review and deletion controls if you want to inspect or remove the request. Disabling the switch is a forward-looking activation change; it should not be described as a command to delete historical audio.

Keep Alexa activation separate from device-usage privacy

Some readers use “access to my screen” to mean that Amazon is collecting information about how they use the tablet. That is a different privacy question from whether Alexa responds to a wake word.

Amazon’s device privacy FAQ distinguishes operating-system device-usage data from Alexa and other service-specific privacy settings. Related preferences can be managed in the tablet’s device settings or in the Amazon account, and device settings apply per device. Turning off Hands-Free Mode therefore should not be described as turning off all collection, telemetry, account activity, or service data.

If your goal is to reduce device-usage collection, open the tablet’s privacy settings and review the device-usage options separately. If your goal is to prevent spoken activation, use the Hands-Free Mode setting. If your goal is to remove past audio, use Alexa’s recording-review and deletion controls.

These controls can be used together. For example, a privacy-focused setup might turn off Hands-Free Mode, leave Show Mode off, review saved Alexa requests, and then inspect the device-usage choices for that particular tablet. None of those steps should be assumed to change the others automatically.

Compatibility, menu differences, and software changes

Amazon documents Hands-Free Mode for compatible Fire tablets. It is not guaranteed to appear on every Amazon tablet, every Fire OS release, or every configuration. The exact labels can also differ depending on whether the tablet is in Show Mode.

Before concluding that a feature is missing, note the tablet’s model and Fire OS version. Open Settings and look for the device-information area if you need those details, then use Amazon’s help for that specific model. A software update can move a control, rename a Quick Actions tile, or change whether a shortcut is exposed, so an older instruction may not match the current screen.

The setting change itself requires no accessory, repair, subscription, or purchase. If you are identifying a replacement tablet, verify current model compatibility and software behavior rather than assuming that every Fire tablet supports the same Alexa options.

Troubleshooting when the setting is missing or ineffective

The Alexa entry is not in Settings

Hands-Free Mode is documented for compatible Fire tablets, not every Amazon tablet or every software configuration. Confirm that the device is a Fire tablet, note its model and Fire OS version, and check Amazon’s model-specific help. A menu can also be hidden or renamed after a software update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot find the Quick Actions tile

Quick Actions are mode- and model-dependent. Swipe down again from the very top edge, expand the full panel if your tablet offers an expansion control, and look for either Alexa Hands Free or Alexa Microphone/Camera. If neither appears, use Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode or the two-volume-button shortcut.

The tablet still responds after you turned hands-free off

  • Check that the switch is off in the Settings page, rather than merely muting the tablet or closing Show Mode.
  • Make sure you are not pressing and holding Home during the test; that action opens Alexa without a wake word.
  • Check whether another person turned the switch back on or whether a software update changed the setting.
  • Restart the tablet and verify the switch again if the interface appears inconsistent.
  • Test from the ordinary tablet interface as well as Show Mode, because the two modes expose different controls.

The tablet is still showing the Alexa dashboard

That is a Show Mode issue. Swipe down and switch Show Mode off. You can also say “Alexa, exit Show Mode,” but the on-screen control is preferable when you are trying to minimize voice activation. If the dashboard returns after a restart, check both the Show Mode switch and Hands-Free Mode state again.

You are worried about the camera rather than the microphone

In Show Mode, disabling Hands-Free Mode also prevents the motion detection used for that hands-free experience. That does not make the setting a universal camera-permission control for every app. Review the tablet’s broader app and device permissions if your concern extends beyond Show Mode.

You saw a blue line or heard a tone

Amazon associates the blue indicator with recording and sending an Alexa request, and the tones with the beginning and end of streaming. Review Alexa recordings if you need to determine what was saved. Do not treat the indicator as a control for device-usage data; those preferences are managed separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The hardware shortcut does not seem to work

Press both volume buttons together and keep holding them for the full three seconds. If the tablet is in a different mode or does not expose the shortcut, use the Settings path, which is the most direct documented method. Always confirm the resulting state in the Hands-Free Mode page rather than relying only on a brief on-screen response.

Which control should you use?

If you want to… Use this control Result
Stop the tablet answering “Alexa” Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode Wake-word activation is disabled.
Stop hands-free motion interaction in Show Mode Hands-Free Mode Show Mode no longer uses that motion-based hands-free behavior.
Remove the full-screen Alexa display Quick Actions > Show Mode off, or “Alexa, exit Show Mode” The normal Fire tablet interface returns.
Open Alexa deliberately without a wake word Press and hold Home outside Show Mode Alexa opens manually even when Hands-Free Mode is off.
Review or remove saved voice requests Alexa recording controls Past recordings can be reviewed or deleted; this does not change activation.
Manage operating-system usage data Device privacy settings or Amazon account preferences Device-usage choices are adjusted separately for the device.

Re-enable Alexa later

To restore wake-word access, return to Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode and turn the switch on. You can also use the corresponding Quick Actions control or hold Volume Up and Volume Down together for three seconds. If Show Mode was turned off as well, re-enable it separately from Quick Actions.

After re-enabling, test with a deliberate wake-word request and watch for the blue indicator and start-and-end tones Amazon describes. If you only want the visual dashboard but not spoken activation, treat the two switches independently: Show Mode can be on while Hands-Free Mode remains off.

A practical privacy checklist

  1. Decide whether the unwanted behavior is a wake-word response, the Show Mode display, saved recordings, or device-usage collection.
  2. For wake-word responses, turn off Hands-Free Mode.
  3. For the visual Alexa dashboard, turn off Show Mode.
  4. Remember that holding Home can still open Alexa outside Show Mode.
  5. Use Alexa’s recording controls for existing audio, rather than assuming the Hands-Free switch deletes it.
  6. Review device-usage privacy settings separately if your concern is operating-system telemetry.
  7. If a menu is absent, identify the Fire tablet model and software version before assuming the feature is unavailable or malfunctioning.
  8. Recheck both switches after a major software update or when another household member has used the tablet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does turning off Hands-Free Mode remove Alexa from my Fire tablet?

No. It stops wake-word activation, but outside Show Mode you can still open Alexa by pressing and holding the Home button. It also does not uninstall Alexa or delete saved recordings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I stop Alexa from responding to the wake word?

Open Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode and turn the switch off. You can also use the appropriate Quick Actions control or hold Volume Up and Volume Down together for three seconds on a compatible tablet.

How do I get out of Show Mode?

Swipe down from the top of the screen and toggle Show Mode off. Amazon also documents the command “Alexa, exit Show Mode,” but use the on-screen control if you are trying to avoid another voice activation.

Why does Alexa still open when Hands-Free Mode is off?

Holding the Home button is a separate manual activation method outside Show Mode. Do not use that gesture when testing whether the wake word has been disabled.

Does turning off Hands-Free Mode delete Alexa recordings?

No. The switch controls future hands-free activation. Use Alexa’s recording-review and deletion controls to manage requests that may already have been saved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Hands-Free Mode control all microphone or camera access?

No. In Show Mode, turning it off stops the motion detection used for that hands-free experience. It is not a universal permission switch for every app or every camera function.

What does the blue line on my Fire tablet mean?

Amazon says the blue indicator appears while Alexa is recording and sending a request. A short tone signals when streaming starts and ends. Review Alexa recordings if you need to check what was saved.

I cannot find Alexa in Settings. What should I do?

Hands-Free Mode is available only on compatible Fire tablets, and labels vary by model and Fire OS version. Identify the tablet model and software version, then check Amazon’s model-specific help. Quick Actions or the two-volume-button shortcut may still be available.

Does turning off Alexa hands-free stop Amazon from collecting tablet-usage data?

No. Amazon treats device-usage preferences separately from Alexa activation. Review the tablet’s device privacy settings or the related Amazon account options for that concern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I leave Show Mode on while disabling the wake word?

Yes, the controls are separate. Turning off Hands-Free Mode stops wake-word activation and Show Mode motion detection, while Show Mode itself can remain active unless you switch it off.

The Bottom Line

For the main privacy change, open Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode and switch it off. Use Quick Actions or the three-second volume-button shortcut if needed. If the tablet is still displaying Alexa’s full-screen dashboard, turn Show Mode off separately. Alexa can still open when you press and hold Home outside Show Mode, and saved recordings and device-usage privacy settings require their own controls.
