On supported Galaxy phones, open Settings > Galaxy AI > Notification highlights > Summarize notifications, then turn off the switch at the top. On Galaxy S26 phones, Samsung also documents Settings > Notifications > Notification highlights. If neither route appears, search Settings for Notification highlights or Summarize notifications; the menu depends on your model, One UI version and app version.
Turn off all AI notification summaries
Samsung calls the feature Summarize notifications. It is grouped under Notification highlights and creates AI-generated summaries of some conversational notifications. The broad switch stops the feature for supported apps instead of requiring you to change every app separately.

- Look for Galaxy AI, then open Notification highlights.
- Tap Summarize notifications.
- Turn off the switch at the top of that screen.
Samsung’s U.S. support instructions use this Settings > Galaxy AI > Notification highlights route. Their wording describes turning the feature on, but the same master switch can be disabled to turn broad summarization off. You do not need to uninstall an app, clear notification history or change the phone’s general notification permission just to stop these AI-generated summaries.

After the switch is off, supported apps should continue to deliver their ordinary alerts according to their existing notification settings. The change targets the summarization layer, not the underlying messages or the apps that sent them.

If you have a Galaxy S26
Samsung Canada’s Galaxy S26 instructions place the setting in a different branch:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Open Notification highlights.
- Tap Summarize notifications and switch it off.
The Canada guide was last updated March 20, 2026 and is specific to the Galaxy S26 series. Do not assume that this route, or the feature itself, is present on every Galaxy model. Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting documentation describes Notification highlights on phones running One UI 8.5 or later, including the S26 series and newer models, but model and regional availability can still differ.
If you have an S26 and the Galaxy AI branch is not present, use Settings > Notifications first. If you have a different model, try both branches rather than assuming one universal menu path.

Choose the master switch when you do not want AI summaries from any supported app. Use an app-level control when summaries are useful in some conversations but unwanted in others. The two choices differ in breadth, not in the basic purpose of the feature.

Samsung documents per-app controls, but the exact labels and location can vary. Start from the app’s entry in your phone’s notification settings and look for its Summarize notifications option. This approach is useful when one app produces distracting or sensitive summaries while another remains helpful.
If you want summaries from only one app, leave the main feature enabled and turn the app-specific switch off everywhere else. Depending on the software release, you may need to repeat that action for each app listed as supported. The supported-app list is not fixed and can change with updates.
When the menu is missing
Do not treat a missing menu as evidence that the switch has simply been removed. Samsung says Notification highlights options vary by phone model, software version and app version. Try these checks in order:

- Search again for Summarize notifications.
- Check both likely branches: Galaxy AI and Notifications.
- Confirm your phone and software are among the models that support the feature. Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting guidance describes Notification highlights on One UI 8.5 or later, including the Galaxy S26 series and newer models.
- Install any available phone or app updates, then search Settings again. Samsung warns that app versions can affect the available options.
Search is generally more reliable than following a menu path copied from another Galaxy model. Samsung can reorganize Galaxy AI settings between One UI releases, and a carrier or regional software build may expose a different label or location.
If search returns nothing and neither branch exists, your model or software may not provide Notification highlights. In that case there is no AI-summary switch to disable on that device. Do not substitute unrelated settings such as Notification pop-up style, Notification history or an app’s preview controls; those change other parts of the notification experience.

How to disable summaries for only one app
A full shutdown is unnecessary if the problem is limited to one messaging app. Samsung says the feature can be enabled or disabled in individual app settings.
- Open Settings.
- Open the phone’s notification settings and select the app you want to change.
- Look for Summarize notifications under that app’s notification options.
- Turn the app-specific switch off, leaving the main Notification highlights switch on.
Because Samsung changes menu organization between models and software releases, the app-level control may appear under a slightly different notification submenu. Use Settings search for the exact phrase if you cannot find it from the app’s notification page.
Check the app’s own notification categories as well. A message preview shown directly by the app is not necessarily an AI summary. The goal is to locate the Samsung control labeled Summarize notifications, not merely to silence the app or hide all of its alerts.
Selective control is also the better choice when you still want summaries for a high-volume group chat but not for one-to-one messages, or when only one app handles confidential conversations. Samsung’s documentation supports per-app settings, although it does not promise identical submenus on every phone.
What happens after you switch it off?
Turning off Summarize notifications prevents the phone from generating the feature’s notification summaries. It does not delete the original messages, disable an app’s ordinary notifications or remove the apps themselves. Messages continue to follow each app’s normal notification settings.
The feature is designed for conversational notifications. Samsung’s U.S. guide says it uses notification history from the previous 24 hours, while the Galaxy S26 guide describes summaries based on unread notifications. Those descriptions are not identical, so the exact timing and notification set can depend on the phone and software version.

If you later turn it back on, the phone may again evaluate eligible notifications under the operating conditions described by Samsung. The setting is a preference switch, not a permanent deletion tool.
Likewise, disabling summaries is different from disabling Notification history. Notification history is an Android record of alerts; Summarize notifications is the Galaxy AI function that interprets eligible conversational alerts. They may appear near one another in Settings, but changing one does not automatically change the other.
Why summaries may appear inconsistently
If you are troubleshooting availability rather than intentionally disabling the feature, Samsung lists several operating conditions. A supported app is required, and supported apps and languages can change. Samsung also says summaries may not be generated when the battery is low or when Power saving is enabled.

- The screen must be off when the feature activates.
- The device must be charged to at least 30%.
- For one-to-one chats, notifications must have arrived for at least three minutes.
- For group chats, notifications must have arrived for at least nine minutes.
- Notifications shorter than 200 characters may not be summarized.
These are feature requirements published in Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting guidance, not measurements of how often people receive summaries. A failure to see a summary does not necessarily mean the master switch is off.
For example, a short message under 200 characters may remain an ordinary notification even when the feature is enabled. A one-to-one conversation that has been visible for less than three minutes may not qualify, while a group conversation may require nine minutes. The phone also needs the screen off and at least 30% charge when activation occurs. Power saving or low battery can prevent generation even when every menu switch appears enabled.
Language and app eligibility are separate limits. An app can be installed and allowed to send notifications but still be outside Samsung’s supported-app list. Similarly, a supported app may not offer summaries for every language. Samsung says both lists may change, so behavior can change after a software or app update without a hardware fault.
Accuracy and limitations
AI summaries are an interpretation of notification text, not a replacement for opening the original conversation. Samsung’s official support note states: Summaries may not always be accurate.
Check the underlying notification or open the conversation before acting on an important detail.
A concise summary can omit context, misread a speaker’s intent or leave out a qualification that appears in the full thread. Samsung does not present the feature as a guaranteed transcript. If a summary concerns a deadline, payment, appointment, safety issue or other consequential detail, open the original message before relying on it.
Availability is also limited by app and language support. Samsung says those lists may change, so an app that works on one phone or software release may not behave identically after an update. The feature’s wording can also differ between guides: one refers to 24-hour notification history and another to unread notifications.
These limitations explain why two Galaxy phones can show different results even when both have a similarly named setting. Model, One UI release, app version, language, battery state, screen state and the age and length of the conversation all matter.
How to verify that the feature is off
After changing the switch, return to the Summarize notifications screen and confirm that the control is visibly off. Then check a supported app’s notification settings if you intended to block only that app. This matters because a per-app setting can preserve or override behavior for an individual app while the general feature remains available elsewhere.
If a summary still appears, first identify whether it is an AI summary or the app’s own notification preview. Ordinary notification text, message previews and bundled notifications are controlled by the app and Android notification settings; they are not necessarily produced by Notification highlights.

Open the notification and compare its wording with the original conversation. A short quote or a standard app-generated preview is not proof that Summarize notifications is still active. Look for the Samsung feature label or the characteristic condensed summary rather than judging only by the fact that several messages were grouped together.
If the master switch is off but an app-specific control remains on, revisit that app’s notification settings. Conversely, if you turned off only one app, summaries from other supported apps can continue normally. This distinction is the most common explanation when a reader expects a selective change to behave like a complete shutdown.

You want every summary gone
Use the main Summarize notifications switch. Search for the feature if your phone does not place it under Galaxy AI, and check the Notifications branch on Galaxy S26 models. Confirm the switch is off after leaving and reopening Settings.
You want summaries from one app only
Leave the master control enabled and turn Summarize notifications off in each app’s notification settings that should be excluded. Because supported-app lists can change, review those app-level choices after a major software update.

You cannot find Notification highlights
Search Settings using both official labels. If neither search result exists, compare your phone and software with Samsung’s stated One UI 8.5-or-later support scope and model-specific documentation. A missing result can mean the feature is unavailable rather than hidden behind a third menu.
The switch is on, but no summary appears
Check app and language support, battery level, Power saving, screen state, the three-minute or nine-minute conversation timing, and the 200-character minimum described by Samsung. The phone must also be charged to at least 30% when the feature activates.
The summary is wrong
Read the original notification or conversation. Samsung explicitly cautions that summaries may not always be accurate; disabling the feature is appropriate if that risk outweighs its convenience.
Only normal previews remain
That can be expected. Turning off AI summaries does not remove ordinary notification previews, message text or bundled alerts. Change the relevant app notification category or preview setting only if you also want to alter those ordinary alerts.

Re-enable summaries later
To restore the feature, return to the same Summarize notifications screen and turn the switch on. If you previously disabled individual apps, revisit their notification settings and re-enable the app-specific control as well. A device update can move the setting, so use Settings search for Notification highlights when the old route no longer matches your phone.
Re-enabling does not guarantee an immediate summary. Samsung’s operating conditions still apply: the app and language must be supported, the screen must be off, the battery must be at least 30%, Power saving should not block the feature, and the conversation must meet the timing and length conditions.
Bottom line for different Galaxy phones
The setting you need is always identified by Samsung’s labels: Notification highlights and Summarize notifications. The U.S. route is under Galaxy AI; Samsung’s Galaxy S26 guide places it under Notifications. Turn off the master switch for a broad shutdown, or use each app’s notification settings for selective control. Model, One UI and app-version differences determine which route and options you see.
