On a TCL Roku TV, open Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience and clear Use info from TV inputs. On a TCL Google TV, open Settings > Privacy > Ads > Delete Advertising ID. These controls reduce specific types of recognition or ad personalization; they do not erase every historical record, stop every advertisement, or block all data collection.
No special accessory, paid service, or replacement streaming device is required. Before changing anything, identify the TV’s platform and note its model and software version, because TCL menu names and available controls vary by model, region, input source, app, and software release.

What ACR means on a TCL television
ACR stands for automatic content recognition. On supported television platforms, it can identify programming and commercials shown through the television’s own tuner and through devices connected to inputs such as HDMI or AV. That information may be used for audience measurement, recommendations, advertising, or related platform services.
ACR is not the same thing as an advertising ID. ACR concerns recognizing what appears on the screen, including content from an antenna or an attached player. An advertising ID is an identifier apps and platform services can use to associate advertising activity with a device. Turning off one does not automatically turn off the other.

TCL sells televisions using more than one smart-TV platform. Roku TV and Google TV use different privacy menus, and a control that exists on one platform should not be assumed to exist on the other. Menu names and availability can also vary by model, country, input source, app, and software version. The steps below therefore begin with platform identification rather than treating every TCL TV as identical.
First identify your TCL TV’s platform
Look at the Home screen
- Roku TV: The Home screen uses Roku-style tiles and a left-side navigation menu. Settings are normally listed directly on the Home screen.
- Google TV: The Home screen has Google TV tabs such as Home, For You, Live, Apps, or Library, depending on the model and region. Settings are opened from the gear icon, usually at the upper-right.
If the interface is unfamiliar, open Settings and look for an About, System, or Device preferences page. Record the model number and software version before changing privacy settings. TCL’s current Google TV guidance is based on a specific series manual, so its instructions are not a guarantee that every TCL Google TV exposes identical labels.
Why the model and software version matter
A setting may be moved, renamed, or omitted after a software update. An older TCL Roku 4-Series manual documents a particular Roku OS 8.1 release and model family, while current Roku privacy documentation describes the same general opt-out area. If a menu item in this guide is missing, use the manual for the exact model rather than selecting a similarly worded option at random.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRegion can matter as well. A television sold in one country may show a different privacy notice or a different set of advertising controls from an otherwise similar set sold elsewhere. The wording on your screen is the final authority for what that particular installation supports.
Turn off viewing-input recognition on a TCL Roku TV
Disable the documented ACR control
- Press the Home button on the Roku remote.
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy.
- Open Smart TV Experience.
- Highlight Use info from TV inputs.
- Clear the checkbox or switch so the option is disabled.
This is the Roku privacy control that covers information about viewing through antenna television and devices connected through HDMI or AV inputs. Roku’s privacy policy describes the same Smart TV Experience area as the location for opting out of this recognition feature.
The setting applies to the documented input-viewing feature, not necessarily to every app or service running on the television. For example, disabling it does not change the privacy practices of a streaming app you open separately, and it does not turn off network access required by that app.
Optional: disable automatic notifications
Some TCL Roku models show Enable auto notifications in the same Smart TV Experience menu. Clear it if you also want to stop notifications generated by that feature. It is a separate control: disabling notifications does not replace disabling Use info from TV inputs, and a model may not display the notification option at all.
What happens to information already collected
The TCL Roku manual states that turning off Smart TV Experience does not delete information collected before the opt-out. The setting changes future participation in the documented feature; it is not a historical-data eraser. Roku also says that disabling ACR does not prevent every other type of interaction or streaming-activity information from reaching the platform through other methods.
That means the correct expectation is reduced collection from the specified TV inputs, not a blank slate. If your goal is to remove an account’s viewing history or information held by a particular service, use that service’s own account or privacy process when one is offered. The Roku checkbox by itself is not a request to erase every record.

Limit ad personalization on a TCL Google TV
Delete the advertising ID
- From the Google TV Home screen, open Settings.
- Select Privacy.
- Open Ads.
- Choose Delete Advertising ID.
- Confirm the action with the remote when prompted.
TCL documents deletion of the advertising ID as the available way to stop apps from using that previous identifier for personalized advertising. Deletion removes the identifier rather than replacing it. Apps can continue to display advertisements, but those ads are no longer based on the deleted ID.
Deleting the ID is useful when you want to break the association represented by that identifier, but it is narrower than disabling all tracking. Apps can have their own accounts, activity logs, recommendation systems, and permissions. Those systems may continue operating according to the app provider’s policies.
Do not confuse deletion with resetting
The same menu may contain Reset Advertising ID. Resetting creates a new identifier and allows services to continue using an advertising ID, now with a different value. Deleting removes the existing ID without replacement. Neither action turns off advertisements, and neither is established by TCL as a universal ACR switch for all Google TV models.
Choose reset only when you intentionally want a fresh identifier. If your objective is to remove the current identifier, confirm that the command says Delete, not Reset, before accepting the prompt.
Google TV does not have one confirmed universal ACR path
TCL’s current Google TV settings guidance says that privacy menus can include app permissions, usage settings, and other controls according to model and software version. It does not establish one ACR-specific path that applies to every TCL Google TV. Inspect your television’s actual privacy menus and its model-specific manual; describe a control as ACR only when the TV or documentation identifies it that way.
Do not substitute the advertising-ID command for an ACR switch merely because both appear under Privacy. They address different data types. If your set exposes a separately named viewing-recognition option, read its explanation carefully before enabling or disabling it; if it does not, TCL has not documented a universal Google TV route that can be promised here.
Other TCL and platform privacy controls
App permissions
Google TV privacy settings may include permissions for individual apps. Review an app’s access to information such as location, microphone, or other device capabilities, where those permissions are offered. Removing a permission can change how the app works, and it addresses that app’s access rather than television-wide viewing recognition.
Check permissions after installing a new app or after a major update. A permission change is specific to the selected app; it does not revoke access granted to other apps, and it does not necessarily delete information the app already received.
Interest-based advertising controls
TCL’s broader privacy information describes an interest-based advertising control labeled Limit Ad Tracking in some environments. The global description does not establish that this exact label appears on every US TCL Roku TV or Google TV. If your model presents the control, read its confirmation text and enable it when you want to limit interest-based ad use.

This control should be treated as an additional advertising preference, not as a replacement for Roku’s input-viewing opt-out or Google TV’s advertising-ID deletion. Ads that are not selected using interests can still appear.

User Experience Improvement Program
TCL also describes an opt-in User Experience Improvement Program. According to TCL, participation can involve device, system, network, and usage information for product improvement, and consent can be withdrawn. This is a separate program from Roku’s input-viewing recognition and from Google’s advertising ID. A television may not offer the program, or may show different wording, so use the switch and explanation shown on your own device.
Because the program is described as opt-in, look for the consent state rather than assuming that declining it changes every other privacy setting. Withdrawing consent from this program does not automatically change an app’s permissions or an advertising identifier.
App and service settings
Streaming applications and platform services can make their own recommendation and advertising decisions. A television-level setting cannot promise that an individual app will stop collecting activity or serving targeted recommendations. Review privacy and advertising choices inside each app you use, subject to that app’s available controls.
For a household with several viewers, repeat this review for each frequently used service and profile. The TV’s menu controls and an app account’s controls are separate layers, so changing one layer may leave the other unchanged.

| Control | Platform | Data or identifier addressed | Does it erase earlier data? | What can continue afterward? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Use info from TV inputs | TCL Roku TV | Recognition information from antenna and connected HDMI or AV inputs | No. TCL’s Roku manual says previously collected information is retained. | Other interaction and streaming-activity data flows, plus app activity, may continue. |
| Enable auto notifications | Some TCL Roku TV models | Notifications associated with Smart TV Experience | Not stated as a deletion control | The underlying viewing-input setting is unaffected unless you disable it separately. |
| Delete Advertising ID | TCL Google TV | The current advertising identifier used for ad personalization | It removes the identifier; TCL does not describe it as a purge of all app or platform history. | Apps can still show ads, and other data collection or recommendations can continue. |
| Reset Advertising ID | TCL Google TV | Replaces the current advertising identifier with a new one | No; reset is not deletion. | Advertising and identifier-based services can continue with the new ID. |
| App permissions | Some TCL Google TV software | Access requested by an individual app | Not stated | The app may retain data already collected and may continue using permissions you leave enabled. |
| Limit Ad Tracking | Some TCL environments | Interest-based advertising, where the control is offered | Not stated | Ads and non-interest-based recommendations can continue. |
| User Experience Improvement Program | Some TCL environments | Device, system, network, and usage information supplied under an opt-in program | Not stated | Information collection covered by other services or apps can continue. |
The table separates controls by platform and data type because a privacy menu can contain several switches that sound similar. “No” in the historical-data column means the documentation does not promise deletion; it is not a claim that a platform can never delete data through another process.
Verify that the change took effect
Roku verification
Return to Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience and confirm that Use info from TV inputs remains unchecked. If you disabled auto notifications, verify that checkbox as well. Switching inputs or restarting the television should not be necessary for the menu state to remain saved, but check again after a system update because labels and defaults can change.
If more than one person uses the television, take a quick photo or written note of the final state so another user does not re-enable the option while dismissing a setup prompt.
Google TV verification
Reopen Settings > Privacy > Ads. The advertising-ID screen should show the result of your choice. If you deleted the ID, do not select Reset Advertising ID merely to inspect the page; reset would create a new identifier. An app may still show ads after deletion, which is expected and does not by itself indicate that deletion failed.

Check the apps separately
Open the privacy or advertising section in frequently used streaming apps. Look for controls concerning personalized recommendations, activity history, or advertising. These settings are governed by the app provider, not by the TCL television menu, and their names differ between apps.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting missing or different menu options
The TV has no “Smart TV Experience” menu
Confirm that the set is actually running Roku TV and not Google TV. On Roku models, the menu can also differ by software version or region. Install any available system update, restart the TV, and check the exact model manual. Do not assume that a generic TCL Roku instruction applies to a different series.
The TV has no “Delete Advertising ID” option
Verify that the set is a Google TV model and that you opened Privacy > Ads, not an app’s own advertising page. If the item is absent, the installed software or region may expose different controls. Use the built-in manual or TCL’s model-specific product downloads. A missing menu item is not evidence that another setting with a similar name disables ACR.
The setting returns after an update or reset
System updates, factory resets, changes of user profile, and device reconfiguration can restore defaults or require consent screens to be answered again. Record your privacy choices and revisit the relevant menu after those events. A factory reset is not a privacy shortcut: it changes many device settings and does not guarantee that information already held by a platform or app is erased.

Ads continue after changing a setting
Continued ads are compatible with both documented outcomes. Roku’s ACR opt-out concerns recognition of programming and commercials from specified inputs, not the complete removal of advertising. Google TV’s advertising-ID deletion limits personalization tied to that ID, while TCL says apps can still show ads. Review app-level controls if the concern is a particular service.
You want to erase historical records
The documented Roku control does not erase previously collected information. The Google TV advertising-ID action removes the identifier but is not described as deletion of every app or platform record. If a service offers an account-history or privacy-request process, use that service’s own procedure; the television toggle alone cannot be represented as a universal deletion request.
You cannot tell whether a control is ACR
Read the explanatory text next to the switch. A control that mentions inputs, programs, commercials, or viewing information is addressing recognition more directly than one that mentions an advertising identifier or interests. If the wording is unclear, consult the manual for the exact model instead of inferring from the position of the setting in the menu.
A practical privacy checklist
- Identify Roku TV versus Google TV and note the model and software version.
- On Roku TV, clear Use info from TV inputs under Privacy > Smart TV Experience.
- On models that offer it, clear Enable auto notifications separately.
- On Google TV, choose Delete Advertising ID under Privacy > Ads when you want to remove the current ad identifier.
- Use Reset Advertising ID only when you intentionally want a replacement identifier; it is not deletion.
- Review app permissions, any available Limit Ad Tracking option, and the User Experience Improvement Program where your model presents them.
- Check privacy settings inside individual streaming apps.
- After a factory reset, profile change, or major update, revisit the menus and confirm the choices again.
- Keep expectations specific: reduced input recognition or ad personalization is not the same as ending every data flow.
Bottom line
For a TCL Roku TV, the documented ACR opt-out is Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience > Use info from TV inputs, with the checkbox cleared. For a TCL Google TV, TCL documents Privacy > Ads > Delete Advertising ID as the way to remove the current identifier used for personalized advertising. Neither action is a universal “stop tracking” switch: Roku may retain previously collected information and continue receiving other activity data, while Google TV apps can continue showing ads and using other services. Because TCL changes menus by model, region, and software version, verify every additional control on the television’s own privacy screen and model-specific manual.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off ACR stop all tracking on a TCL Roku TV?
No. Clearing Use info from TV inputs opts out of the documented recognition of programming and commercials from antenna, HDMI, and AV inputs. Roku says other interaction and streaming-activity information can still be received through other methods, and TCL says information collected before the opt-out is retained.
Best Value
Will I stop seeing ads after deleting the Google TV advertising ID?
No. TCL says apps can continue to display advertisements. Deleting the ID limits personalization based on that previous identifier; it does not turn advertising off or erase every app and platform record.
Should I reset or delete the advertising ID?
Choose Delete Advertising ID when you want to remove the current identifier without replacement. Reset Advertising ID creates a new identifier, so advertising and identifier-based services can continue with a different value.
Why can’t I find Smart TV Experience on my TCL television?
First confirm that the TV runs Roku TV. Menu availability depends on model, region, and Roku software version. Check for updates and consult the manual or product-download page for the exact model. A Google TV set uses different menus.
Is there one ACR switch on every TCL Google TV?
TCL has not documented one universal ACR-specific path for all Google TV models. Google TV privacy menus vary, so identify a setting as ACR only when your television or its model-specific documentation describes it that way. The documented general control is deletion of the advertising ID.
Do app permissions replace the TV’s ACR setting?
No. App permissions govern access requested by an individual app, such as location or microphone access. They do not replace Roku’s input-viewing control and do not necessarily delete information an app already collected.
Do I need to buy a privacy device or pay for a service?
No. The documented changes use built-in TCL, Roku, and Google TV menus. No accessory or subscription is required to clear the Roku input-viewing option or delete the Google TV advertising ID.
What should I do after a factory reset or major update?
Revisit the relevant privacy menus. Resets, updates, profile changes, and device reconfiguration can restore defaults or present consent screens again. Recheck Roku’s Smart TV Experience setting, Google TV’s Ads page, and any app-level choices.
