Why holding the Side button may open Bixby
On many newer Galaxy phones, pressing and holding the Side button alone can launch Bixby rather than show power controls. Use Side button + Volume Down to open the power menu.
If you want the Side button’s press-and-hold action to show power controls, go to Settings → Advanced features → Side button and choose Power off menu. The exact setting name or path can differ by software version. Samsung also documents the Bixby Voice command above, provided Bixby Voice has already been configured.

If the Galaxy S24 is frozen and will not turn off
For an unresponsive phone, press and hold the Side/Power button and Volume Down together until the device shuts down. Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting guidance says this may take up to 60 seconds. This is a troubleshooting hold, not the short button press used to bring up the normal power menu; it may force a restart rather than leave the phone powered off.
After a reboot, a phone secured with biometrics may ask for its backup password or PIN. If it still cannot be shut down, Samsung recommends requesting service.

If the steps look different
Menu labels and screen details can vary by model, software version and service provider. Samsung’s S24 support listing includes manuals for Android 14 and Android 15, with listing modifications noted in January 2024 and April 2025; those dates do not establish which version is installed on an individual phone.
