To turn off a Samsung Galaxy S23, hold the Side and Volume Down buttons together until the power menu appears, tap Power off, then tap it again to confirm. You can also use the power icon in Quick Settings. If the phone is frozen, use the button combination for a forced restart instead; that reboots the phone rather than shutting it down.
Turn off the Galaxy S23 with its buttons
- Press and hold the Side button and Volume Down button at the same time for a few seconds, until the power menu appears.
- Tap Power off.
- Tap Power off again to confirm.
To turn the phone back on after it has shut down, press and hold the Side button. These steps are specified in Samsung’s Galaxy phone power instructions and the Galaxy S23-series user manual.

Turn it off from Quick Settings
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the notification or Quick Settings panel. Samsung’s support instructions describe swiping down with two fingers to open Quick Settings.
- Tap the power icon.
- Tap Power off, then tap it again to confirm.
The panel gesture and power-icon placement can vary by software version. If you do not see the icon, use the Side and Volume Down buttons.

Why holding the Side button may open Bixby
The Side button can be assigned to different actions, so holding it by itself may open Bixby rather than the power menu. The two-button method above still opens the power menu. To change the press-and-hold action, go to Settings > Advanced features > Side button, then choose Power off menu under Press and hold. Labels or placement may differ with software version.

Choose Restart or Power off
Use Restart in the power menu when you want the S23 to reboot. Choose Power off when you want the phone to shut down and remain off. Both options are available from the button-opened menu or the Quick Settings power icon.

If the screen is unresponsive and you cannot use the power menu, press and hold the Side and Volume Down buttons together for more than seven seconds, until the phone restarts. Samsung’s S23-series manual describes this as a restart, not the normal Power off procedure. Samsung notes that a forced reboot can take up to 60 seconds in some cases in its phone-will-not-turn-off troubleshooting guidance.

If the phone remains unresponsive or will not turn off after troubleshooting, follow Samsung’s guidance for a device that will not start or is in a boot loop and request service if needed.
