To disable 5G on an iPhone, open Settings > Mobile Data (or Cellular) > Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data, then choose LTE. On a Google Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, select the SIM, open Preferred network type, and choose LTE if that option is available. The exact Android labels depend on the phone, Android version, country and carrier.
Turning off 5G can affect battery consumption, but no official source establishes a guaranteed number of extra hours. Apple says 5G Auto can save battery by moving to LTE when 5G is not noticeably better; LTE-only mode is the strictest way to prevent 5G use. Android phones may offer similar controls, but they do not all expose them.

Choose the right setting first
There are three different goals people often describe as “turning off 5G”:
- Use LTE instead of 5G whenever possible: choose LTE in the phone’s network-mode settings. This is the direct, permanent restriction where the option is provided.
- Let the phone decide: choose 5G Auto on an iPhone. Smart Data mode uses LTE when 5G would not noticeably improve the experience.
- Reduce overall mobile-data activity: change Data Mode or enable Battery Saver. These are not the same as changing the preferred network and do not necessarily disable 5G.
Disabling 5G is a software setting. You do not need a new SIM, accessory or subscription to try the documented steps.

What the battery evidence actually shows
Apple states that 5G On always uses 5G when it is available and “may reduce battery life.” Apple also says that when 5G speeds do not provide a noticeably better experience, 5G Auto switches the iPhone to LTE automatically, “saving battery life.” Those statements support a possible battery benefit from using Auto or LTE, not a guaranteed improvement for every phone or network.
No official source establishes a universal percentage, number of hours or controlled LTE-versus-5G result that applies to all users. Battery runtime also depends on signal conditions, screen use, apps, temperature, software and the carrier network. Treat the change as an experiment: use the phone normally for a day or two and compare your own battery pattern rather than expecting a fixed gain.
Turn off 5G on an iPhone
Set the iPhone to LTE only
- Open Settings.
- Tap Mobile Data. In some regions and language settings this menu is labeled Cellular.
- Tap Mobile Data Options (or Cellular Data Options).
- Tap Voice & Data.
- Select LTE.
With LTE selected, the iPhone uses LTE even in an area where 5G is available. This is the appropriate choice when you specifically want 5G disabled. Apple documents the mode behavior in its iPhone 5G support guide.
Handle Dual SIM correctly
If the iPhone has two active lines, the setting belongs to a particular line. In Settings > Mobile Data (or Cellular), first tap the line you want to change, then open Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data and choose LTE. Repeat for the other line if you want both lines restricted. A change to one line does not automatically change the other.

Use 5G Auto instead of disabling 5G completely
If you want 5G available for demanding tasks but do not want the phone to use it unnecessarily:
- Open Settings > Mobile Data (or Cellular).
- Tap Mobile Data Options.
- Tap Voice & Data.
- Select 5G Auto.
Apple calls this Smart Data mode. The iPhone chooses LTE when 5G would not provide a noticeably better experience and returns to 5G when the faster connection is useful. Apple specifically describes this behavior as saving battery life. It is a compromise: 5G remains available, so it is not an LTE-only setting.
Understand the three iPhone choices
| Voice & Data choice | 5G behavior | Battery implication | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5G Auto | Switches between 5G and LTE according to whether 5G would noticeably improve the experience. | Apple says the LTE fallback saves battery; no universal amount is stated. | You want a balance between speed and battery use. |
| 5G On | Uses 5G whenever it is available. | Apple says it may reduce battery life. | You prioritize having 5G whenever the network offers it. |
| LTE | Uses LTE only, even when 5G is available. | Prevents 5G use, but Apple does not publish a guaranteed runtime increase. | You specifically want to turn off 5G. |
Do not confuse Voice & Data with Data Mode
The Voice & Data menu chooses the radio technology. The separate Data Mode menu controls how much data the iPhone is willing to use for features such as updates and background activity. Depending on the selected network mode, Apple provides options such as:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Allow More Data on 5G: permits higher-data features over a 5G connection.
- Standard: allows automatic updates and background tasks over mobile data.
- Low Data Mode: pauses automatic updates and background tasks.
Changing Data Mode does not turn cellular data off and does not, by itself, select LTE. To disable 5G, use Voice & Data > LTE. Apple explains both sets of controls in its 5G settings documentation.

Turn off 5G on a Google Pixel
Select LTE as the preferred network type
- Open Settings.
- Tap Network & internet.
- Tap SIMs.
- Select the SIM or mobile line you want to change.
- Tap Preferred network type.
- Choose LTE, if it is listed.
This is Google’s documented Pixel path. The wording and available choices can differ by Pixel model, Android release, country and carrier. Some phones show choices such as 5G and LTE; others may expose a different set of network modes. Google describes the variability in its Pixel mobile-network instructions and its mobile-connectivity troubleshooting guide.
Use Adaptive Connectivity for automatic decisions
If your Pixel offers Adaptive connectivity, it can be a better fit than forcing LTE all the time:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Network & internet.
- Open the network settings where Adaptive connectivity is shown.
- Turn on Adaptive connectivity.
Google says Adaptive connectivity turns on 5G only when an app needs increased speed, such as when streaming or downloading video, and recommends it as a way to save battery power. It still permits 5G, so it is not equivalent to selecting LTE. Some U.S. carriers may limit the feature. See Google’s network-settings guidance for the current control location on Pixel software.
Use Battery Saver when you need broader power savings
Battery Saver is a general power-saving mode rather than a dedicated 5G switch. Google says that a Pixel with 5G may use 4G while Battery Saver is on, depending on the carrier network. It can also restrict other background behavior, so enable it when you want a wider reduction in power use, not merely a different preferred network. The carrier qualification is important: Battery Saver does not guarantee LTE on every Pixel network configuration. Google documents this behavior at Use Battery Saver on a Pixel phone.

iPhone and Pixel choices compared
| Choice | Can 5G be used? | How automatic is the decision? | Battery information | Availability caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 5G Auto | Yes, when the phone decides it is useful. | Highly automatic; shifts to LTE when 5G is not noticeably better. | Apple says the LTE shift saves battery; no universal measurement is supplied. | Names and availability can depend on market and carrier. |
| iPhone LTE | No; LTE is used even where 5G is available. | Not automatic between 5G and LTE because 5G is excluded. | Avoids 5G use; no guaranteed amount of extra runtime is established. | Shown in Voice & Data where supported. |
| Pixel LTE preferred | No, if LTE is selected and the carrier honors the setting. | Manual preference for LTE. | No universal measured gain is established. | Depends on phone, Android version, country and carrier. |
| Pixel Adaptive Connectivity | Yes, when an app needs higher speed. | Automatic; 5G is activated for demanding use. | Google recommends it to save battery power. | Some U.S. carriers may limit it. |
| Pixel Battery Saver | It may use 4G instead of 5G. | Automatic as part of a broader power-saving mode. | General power-saving feature; no isolated 5G-only gain is quantified. | 4G behavior depends on the carrier network. |
If you cannot find an LTE or preferred-network option
Do not assume that every Android phone has the same menu. Google’s instructions apply to Pixel devices, and Google says the available network types vary by phone and Android version. Carrier and country restrictions can also remove or rename the control.
- Open the Settings search field and search for preferred network type, network mode or mobile network.
- Open the result and check the active SIM or mobile line. On a Dual SIM phone, each line can have separate controls.
- Check the phone maker’s current support instructions for your exact model and software version.
- Ask the carrier whether LTE-only selection is supported on that device and plan in your country.
A missing menu is not evidence that a hidden code will work. The official consumer guidance does not establish a reliable, manufacturer-approved universal workaround for every Android model, so avoid treating dialer codes or testing menus as standard instructions.
Why the status-bar icon can mislead you
On a Pixel, a 5G icon does not necessarily prove that the phone is actively transferring data over 5G. Google notes that the icon can indicate that 5G service is available. Conversely, an LTE icon does not tell you how much data a particular app is using. To confirm the setting, check the selected network mode in Settings rather than relying only on the status bar. Google explains the icon qualification in its connectivity troubleshooting documentation.

- 5G-only benefits are unavailable: the phone will not use the faster 5G connection while LTE-only mode is selected.
- LTE fallback remains normal: phones are designed to fall back to 4G and lower network generations when 5G is unavailable; selecting LTE simply makes LTE the chosen ceiling where supported.
- Calls and mobile data remain enabled: LTE mode is not airplane mode and does not switch off cellular service.
- Battery results can vary: the setting may help, but official documentation does not promise a particular improvement.
If a task genuinely needs higher 5G throughput, you can return to the original setting later. On iPhone, use Settings > Mobile Data/Cellular > Mobile Data Options/Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data and choose 5G Auto or 5G On. On Pixel, revisit Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, select the SIM and choose the available 5G preference.

A practical decision guide
Choose iPhone LTE when you want a firm 5G ban
Use LTE when your priority is predictable network selection and you are willing to give up 5G until you change the setting back. This is the clearest answer to “How do I turn off 5G?” on a supported iPhone.
Choose iPhone 5G Auto when you want the least manual management
Use 5G Auto when you want Apple’s Smart Data behavior to decide. It preserves access to 5G for situations in which the speed is useful while using LTE when Apple says the difference would not be noticeable.
Choose Pixel LTE when the setting is exposed and you want the same firm restriction
Select LTE under the relevant SIM’s preferred network type. If LTE is not listed, the carrier or software build may not permit manual selection.
Choose Pixel Adaptive Connectivity when you want automatic 5G only for demanding apps
Adaptive Connectivity is the middle ground on supported Pixel configurations. It allows 5G for tasks such as video streaming or downloading while avoiding constant 5G selection for lighter activity, according to Google.
Choose Battery Saver for an immediate, broader power-saving response
Battery Saver is appropriate when you also want background and system power reductions. Its possible 4G behavior on 5G Pixels depends on the carrier, so do not use it as a guaranteed LTE-only switch.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing Low Data Mode and expecting 5G to disappear: Data Mode governs data-use behavior; Voice & Data or Preferred network type governs the network technology.
- Changing the wrong Dual SIM line: network settings are attached to the selected line.
- Assuming every Android path is identical: Pixel instructions cannot be presented as a universal menu for Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus or other Android models.
- Promising a fixed battery gain: Apple and Google describe battery-saving behavior, but neither source gives a universal LTE-only runtime increase.
- Reading the 5G icon as proof of active 5G data: Google says the icon can represent availability.
- Using unofficial hidden menus as the first remedy: if the documented control is absent, check the model and carrier documentation instead.
How to judge whether the change helped
- Record your usual battery percentage at a consistent time and note your normal activities.
- Apply LTE-only mode, 5G Auto, Adaptive Connectivity or Battery Saver according to your phone.
- Use the phone normally rather than comparing a heavy-streaming day with a light-use day.
- Compare several similar days and consider signal strength, screen time, apps and temperature before deciding whether the change is worthwhile.
This approach avoids treating a single day as proof. The official guidance establishes how the settings select networks, not a guaranteed result for an individual battery.
