There is no single Android switch that turns every “3D emoji” into one standard design. The phrase usually describes a sticker or avatar feature—such as a Samsung AI-generated sticker or AR Emoji—not the ordinary Unicode emoji character. Open your keyboard’s regular emoji picker and tap the character you want. If the emoji only looks oversized, adjust emoji size or device font scale; those controls change dimensions, not artwork. The exact result depends on your phone model, keyboard, app and software version.
First identify what “3D emoji” means on your phone
Android uses several unrelated features that can look three-dimensional. The correct fix depends on where the image came from and whether it is inserted as text, a sticker image, an avatar or wallpaper.

A generated AI sticker
On some Samsung phones, an AI Sticker can be generated in a dimensional, illustrated style. Samsung Community guidance describes “3D emoji” as a style option for custom AI stickers. A generated sticker is an image, not the ordinary emoji character that apps render from text. It will therefore appear in a sticker area or sticker tray rather than only in the standard emoji-character grid.

A Samsung AR Emoji avatar
Samsung’s AR Zone is a camera feature that can create an avatar and produce stickers or GIFs. Those avatar outputs are separate from ordinary keyboard emoji. If the image shows your avatar or another custom character, stop using the AR Emoji/AR Zone sticker or GIF panel and insert a regular character from the keyboard picker instead. AR Zone availability varies by phone model and software release.
An emoji that merely looks too large
Large artwork is a size issue, not necessarily a 3D-style setting. Gboard documents an emoji-size control under Settings → Emojis, stickers & GIFs → Layout. Depending on the Gboard version, you may see a slider or a layout option that controls the size. Gboard says emoji sizes match the device’s font scale by default, so Android’s font-size setting can also affect how large the keyboard’s emoji appear. Reducing the size does not replace one vendor’s artwork with another vendor’s design.
An emoji effect on the wallpaper
If the images are on the lock screen or home-screen wallpaper rather than inside a message, they are not keyboard emoji. Wallpaper or photo-motion controls govern that display. Changing Gboard or Samsung Keyboard settings will not remove a wallpaper effect.

- Open an app with a text field. Start a new message, email, note or other text entry so Gboard appears.
- Open the emoji picker. Tap the smiley-face emoji key on Gboard. If the key is not visible, open Gboard’s toolbar or the key that exposes symbols and emoji; the arrangement depends on your layout.
- Choose the ordinary emoji category. Browse the standard character grid and tap the emoji you want. Do not choose a result from a sticker, AI Sticker or GIF panel if you want a text character.
- Send or continue editing. The selected character is inserted into the text field. Its final appearance is rendered by the receiving app, operating system and device, so another person may see a different artwork style for the same character.
Gboard’s language controls are separate from emoji selection. Changing the keyboard language changes the languages available for typing; it does not change the Android device language and is not documented as an emoji-artwork switch.
Use standard emoji on Samsung Keyboard
Samsung Keyboard also has a regular emoji picker alongside stickers, GIFs and other toolbar tools. Open a text field, tap the emoji control and select a character from the ordinary emoji grid. If the toolbar is hidden, use Samsung Keyboard’s customization or toolbar-management controls to make the emoji control available.
Samsung’s cited support information explains keyboard customization and toolbar management, but it does not show a universal selector for the artwork used by ordinary emoji. Selecting a different keyboard may alter the picker’s layout and the artwork shown while you type, yet it cannot guarantee one design in every app or on every recipient’s device.

Stop using AI-generated or avatar stickers
When the sticker appears in a Samsung AI Sticker panel
- Tap the keyboard’s emoji control while a text field is active.
- Stay on the standard emoji-character tab rather than the sticker or AI Sticker tab.
- Tap the desired character in the grid and verify that it appears in the text field as a character, not as a separate image bubble.
There is no evidence of a system-wide Android setting that converts previously generated sticker images into ordinary characters. A sticker must be replaced by inserting the character you intended.

When the image comes from AR Emoji
AR Emoji stickers and GIFs are produced by Samsung’s AR Zone camera feature. They are designed to be sent as media, so they are not controlled by the normal emoji-character setting. Return to the keyboard picker and choose a standard emoji whenever you want the conventional character form. Because AR Zone features are model-dependent, the names and availability of its tools can differ.
Change emoji size without changing its design
Use size controls only when your complaint is that emoji are too large or too small.
Gboard’s emoji-size setting
- Open Gboard settings from the keyboard toolbar or your phone’s keyboard settings.
- Go to Emojis, stickers & GIFs → Layout.
- Adjust the emoji-size control, then return to a text field and check the result.
Gboard states that its default emoji size follows the device’s font scale. A change to Android’s system font size can therefore change the apparent size of emoji in Gboard. The setting does not promise a different drawing style, and individual apps may display the same character at their own size.

When only one app looks different
Emoji are rendered by the app and platform that display them. If the picker looks normal but sent messages, comments or a social app show different artwork, the app’s renderer or the recipient’s device may be responsible. A keyboard setting cannot force every app and recipient to use one vendor’s glyphs.

What can and cannot be changed
| What you are seeing | Where it is controlled | What to do | What the change affects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary emoji character | Keyboard’s standard emoji picker | Open the emoji grid and tap a character | The character inserted into the current text field |
| Samsung AI-generated sticker | AI Sticker or sticker panel | Leave that panel and select a standard emoji character | That insertion only; it does not convert existing sticker images |
| Samsung AR Emoji avatar sticker or GIF | AR Zone camera feature | Use the keyboard’s ordinary emoji picker instead | New messages where you choose the character |
| Emoji that appears oversized | Gboard layout and device font scale | Adjust Emojis, stickers & GIFs → Layout or font size | Displayed size, not the artwork family |
| Emoji imagery on wallpaper | Wallpaper or lock-screen settings | Change the wallpaper feature that created it | Wallpaper display, not keyboard input |
Why the same emoji can look different
Emoji characters are standardized in meaning, but their glyph artwork is supplied by platform and app vendors. The phone that sends a character, the app that displays it and the phone that receives it can all use different drawings. A keyboard can select the character; it does not own every later rendering.
This is why changing from Gboard to Samsung Keyboard is not a reliable universal fix. It may change the picker you see, while a messaging app, browser or recipient still draws its own version. The documented controls cover keyboard entry, layout and separate sticker/avatar features—not a switch that forces one ordinary-emoji design throughout Android.

The emoji key is missing
- Confirm that a text field is active and that Gboard or Samsung Keyboard is actually open.
- Open the keyboard toolbar or its symbols menu; the emoji key may be tucked away by the current layout.
- Use the keyboard’s customization or toolbar-management screen to expose the emoji control.
You keep inserting stickers instead of characters
- Check the tab label before tapping: choose the ordinary emoji-character grid, not stickers, GIFs or AI-generated results.
- Look at the text field after tapping. A character is part of the text; a sticker appears as a separate image or media item.
- Delete the sticker and insert a character again; changing its visual style after insertion is not documented.
The emoji is still “3D” after using the picker
- Determine whether “3D” means large size. If so, adjust Gboard’s layout size or Android’s font scale.
- Check whether the receiving app is rendering its own artwork. Compare the same character in another text field without assuming the keyboard controls that display.
- If the image is on a wallpaper or lock screen, change the wallpaper feature rather than keyboard settings.
The menu path does not match
Gboard and Samsung change labels and placement across Android, One UI and app releases. Look for settings containing “emoji,” “stickers,” “GIFs,” “layout,” “toolbar” or “keyboard.” The documented path for Gboard is Settings → Emojis, stickers & GIFs → Layout, but your release may present the same control from the keyboard toolbar or with slightly different wording.
What is not established about a universal “standard emoji” switch
The available Google Gboard and Samsung documentation describes emoji entry, size and keyboard customization, while Samsung’s separate features cover AR avatars and generated stickers. It does not establish a universal Android switch that forces one ordinary-emoji artwork across every keyboard, app and device. The visual result for a particular phone-and-app combination can therefore vary by model, software release, region and app implementation.

Google’s 2023 report on a study of 2,000 participants concerned use of emoji skin-tone preferences. It describes one-tap preferences for compatible skin-tone and gender variations, but it does not measure demand for a particular artwork style or establish a system-wide 3D-to-standard setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will changing Gboard’s language make emoji look standard?
No. Gboard’s language controls change typing languages and do not change the Android device language or document a universal emoji-artwork control.
Can I convert a 3D-looking sticker already sent into a normal emoji?
No conversion is established. A generated or avatar sticker is an image; delete or replace it by inserting the intended character from the ordinary emoji picker.
Why does the same emoji look different to another person?
The recipient’s operating system and app may render the same character with different artwork. Keyboard choice does not control every later display.
Does reducing emoji size remove the 3D appearance?
It can make an oversized emoji smaller, but Gboard’s size and font-scale controls change dimensions, not the underlying artwork style.
