The documented way to disable Gmail Help me write is through Gmail’s broader Google Workspace smart-feature control. On a computer, open Gmail, select Settings (the gear), choose See all settings, stay on General, scroll to Google Workspace smart features, select Manage Workspace smart feature settings, turn off Smart features in Google Workspace, and select Save. This is not a Help me write-only switch: Google says it also controls other Workspace experiences, including Gemini in Workspace.
The separate Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet setting controls app-level personalization such as Smart Compose, Smart Reply, automatic categorization, and summary cards. It is independent of the Workspace control. Which controls and Help me write itself appear depends on your account, plan, language, country, device, and Google’s rollout status.

What the Gmail smart-feature settings actually control
Google exposes three related but separate groups of controls. Confusing them is the main reason older instructions fail to remove Help me write or unexpectedly disable other Gmail features.

Google’s current documentation does not describe a one-feature-only off switch that removes every Help me write entry point while leaving every other Gemini or Workspace feature untouched. Therefore, decide whether you are comfortable disabling the wider Workspace set before changing the setting.

Turn off the documented Workspace control
These are the current desktop steps. The labels are under Gmail’s general settings rather than the older Advanced tab or the Smart Compose section.
- Open Gmail on a computer and sign in to the account whose settings you want to change.
- Select the Settings gear in the upper-right corner.
- Select See all settings.
- In the General tab, scroll to Google Workspace smart features.
- Select Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
- Turn Smart features in Google Workspace off.
- Select Save at the bottom of the Gmail settings page.
Google says the Workspace switch controls the use of Workspace content and activity to provide smart features across Workspace. Its listed experiences, including Gemini in Workspace, are unavailable while the switch is off. Google’s wording is explicit: “When you turn off this setting, you can’t use the experiences listed above in Google Workspace products. To continue to use these experiences, you need to turn the setting back on.”
What you may lose by switching it off
This setting is broader than email drafting. If you use other Gemini or smart Workspace experiences, they may stop working until the setting is restored. The change is therefore appropriate when you want to opt out of Workspace smart features generally, but it is not a precise way to hide only the Help me write control.

- Return to Gmail on a computer.
- Open Settings, then See all settings.
- On General, go to Google Workspace smart features.
- Select Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
- Turn Smart features in Google Workspace on.
- Select Save.
After the change, the Workspace experiences associated with the setting can become available again, subject to your account’s eligibility and Google’s rollout.
Manage Gmail, Chat, and Meet smart features separately
If your goal is to stop personalization in Gmail, Chat, and Meet rather than disable Workspace Gemini features, use the separate app-level switch.

- Open Gmail on a computer.
- Select Settings, then See all settings.
- Remain on the General tab and find Smart features.
- Change Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet to the setting you want.
- Save the change if Gmail presents a save control.
Google gives automatic email categorization, Smart Compose, Smart Reply, and summary cards as examples of what this setting can affect. It is independent of Smart features in Google Workspace, so changing this switch is not a documented replacement for the Workspace control when your concern is Help me write.
Changes across devices
Google says changes apply across devices and apps where you are signed in. A change made on a computer may not appear immediately in a mobile app. If the app does not show a notification or the expected state, update the mobile app and check again after the account synchronizes.

Use Gmail Help me write on a computer
When Help me write is available for your account, you can use it while composing a new message, replying, or editing a draft.
- In Gmail, select Compose, open a reply, or open an existing draft.
- Enter any context you already know, or leave the message field blank if you want the tool to create a first draft from your instruction.
- Find the prompt bar at the bottom of the compose window. If it is not visible, select Help me write to reveal it.
- Type a specific request and select Create.
- Read the generated draft. To change it, enter a more precise follow-up instruction or choose Formalize, Friendly, or Shorten.
- Insert or edit the result only after checking names, dates, commitments, attachments, recipients, and tone.
Write prompts that produce usable drafts
Google recommends specifying the recipient, the topic or action, and the desired tone. For example, a request can identify the customer, state that the message should confirm a delivery date, and ask for a concise, professional tone. If accuracy depends on information in an email or file, refer to that relevant context in the prompt and verify that the resulting text reflects it.
Help me write is a drafting aid, not an authority on the facts in your mailbox. Google warns that generated suggestions may be inaccurate or inappropriate. Google’s desktop guidance also says that Google Workspace with Gemini is constantly learning and may not be able to support every request. Treat the output as an editable proposal: remove unsupported claims, check the audience, and do not send it automatically.

Why Help me write may not appear
Your account is not eligible
Google’s current Gmail feature information lists Help me write for eligible Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra plans and eligible Google Workspace plans. It also lists personal Gmail availability in the United States for the supported languages. A personal account outside that availability, a Workspace account without an eligible plan, or an account still waiting for rollout may not show the control.
Your language is unsupported
The current listed languages are English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. Set your Gmail or account language to a supported language only if that matches how you actually intend to use Gmail; changing language alone cannot overcome an account or regional restriction.
The feature is not available on that device yet
Google lists Help me write on the web, iOS, and Android, but availability can differ by platform and rollout stage. Check the web version first, then update the mobile app if the feature is missing there. A feature that appears on the web may take time to appear in a mobile app.
An administrator controls the Workspace account
In an organization, an administrator may determine which Workspace features are available. If the documented controls are missing, locked, or revert after you change them, contact the organization’s administrator rather than repeatedly changing Gmail settings.
Availability, plans, and regional defaults
Eligibility is account-specific. Google’s current availability information identifies Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra for personal-account Gemini access and eligible Google Workspace plans for organizational accounts. It also identifies Help me write as available at no charge for personal Google accounts in the United States, while noting that Google gradually expands country and territory availability. That does not mean every Gmail account worldwide has the feature, nor does it mean a paid plan is required to turn the feature off.

The listed Help me write platforms are Web, iOS, and Android. The listed supported languages are English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. These are current availability details and can change as Google expands or adjusts the rollout, so an account that does not show the feature should be checked against Google’s current Gmail feature-availability information.
Google says smart-feature settings are off by default for residents of the European Economic Area, Japan, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. That statement concerns the default state of these settings; it is not a guarantee that every AI feature is unavailable or that every data-processing behavior is disabled in those regions.

Google describes the Workspace smart-feature setting as controlling the use of Workspace content and activity to provide smart features across Workspace. The Gmail, Chat, and Meet setting controls personalization in those apps, and the other-Google-products setting is separate.
When a relevant smart-feature setting is on, Google says content can be used to provide relevant smart features. Turning the setting off stops future use for providing those features and stops active processing to improve the relevant features going forward. Google does not say that turning the switch off erases learnings already developed, so do not treat this setting as a deletion request or as a change to every form of Google data handling.

Troubleshoot a setting that does not behave as expected
The Help me write button remains visible
First confirm that you changed Smart features in Google Workspace, not only the Gmail, Chat, and Meet personalization switch. Because Google does not document a one-feature-only control, a visible entry point may not disappear in exactly the way you expect immediately. Save the setting, refresh Gmail, and open a new compose window. If the Workspace experiences remain available, check whether you changed the correct signed-in account.
Other smart features disappeared too
That is consistent with the documented scope of the Workspace switch. Turn the setting back on if you need those Workspace experiences, or leave it off if your intention was to disable Workspace smart features broadly. The Gmail, Chat, and Meet switch can be managed separately.
A mobile app still shows the old state
Changes made on a computer may take time to appear on mobile. Confirm that the phone is signed in to the same account, update Gmail, close and reopen the app, and allow synchronization. Google specifically notes that some computer changes may not immediately show in a mobile app.
The setting or save button is missing
Open Gmail in a desktop browser and use See all settings rather than the compact quick-settings panel. If the control is still absent or cannot be changed, the account type, administrator policy, region, or current rollout may be responsible. A managed Workspace account may require an administrator to change access.

Do not send it unchanged. Check factual details against the source email or file, verify recipients and attachments, and rewrite unsupported or inappropriate language. Give Help me write a narrower follow-up instruction or use Formalize, Friendly, or Shorten only after deciding what the message must actually say.
