MCP Book Lover connects Claude to a personal book-library server for organizing titles, recording reading progress, finding recommendations, searching online catalogs, and working with ebook files. You can add it to Claude Code with one command or configure it in Claude Desktop; its default library database and downloaded books are stored locally on your computer.

What MCP Book Lover lets Claude do

MCP Book Lover is an MCP server that gives a compatible AI assistant tools for managing a personal reading library. Its project README describes the package as: “Your AI librarian from Claude or Cursor — track reading lists, get recommendations, search 8 sources, download and convert books with 35+ tools.” Those figures and capabilities are the project’s own descriptions, not independently measured results. See the MCP Book Lover repository for its feature list and setup instructions.

Keep reading notes and goals

You can record book or series reviews, save quotes, view reading statistics, and track annual reading goals. Recommendations can draw on ratings and series reviews; the README also describes author- and genre-based recommendations through Open Library.

Search catalogs and discovery sites

The project lists eight search sources: Google Books, Open Library, Author.Today, Knigogo, Searchfloor, LibGen, Flibusta, and Project Gutenberg. It says the server routes Cyrillic queries to Ukrainian or Russian sources and Latin queries to English sources. Some integrations use APIs and others scraping; their availability and behavior may change, and the project documentation does not establish independent uptime or service quality.

Work with ebook files

The README documents conversion among EPUB, FB2, TXT, and PDF, including batch conversion. It says conversion preserves chapter structure, title, author and language metadata, covers, bold and italic styling, and inline images. It also says zipped .fb2.zip and .epub.zip files are extracted automatically before parsing. These are project-described capabilities, not independently verified guarantees.

The project describes downloading books from Searchfloor to ~/Books and finding download links through LibGen and Flibusta. A result is not a guarantee that a title is available, authorized, or suitable to download. Use sources and obtain books in accordance with applicable rights and the source’s terms.

Import and export library data

Documented options include bulk import from text and export to JSON, CSV, or Markdown, which can help when moving or reusing collection data.

Connect MCP Book Lover to Claude Code

The README’s quick-start command for Claude Code is:

claude mcp add book-lover -- uvx mcp-book-lover

This registers a server named book-lover. The project says uvx fetches and runs the package without requiring a separate manual installation step. After adding it, use the MCP server through the client’s available tools; exact interaction and approval prompts depend on your Claude Code setup.

Configure it in Claude Desktop

The project’s Claude Desktop configuration uses the server name book-lover, command uvx, and argument mcp-book-lover. Add an entry like this to the MCP server configuration your Claude Desktop installation uses:

  "mcpServers": {
    "book-lover": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": ["mcp-book-lover"]
    }
  }
}

Save the configuration and restart Claude Desktop so it can load the server. Consult the project README for the current client-specific configuration guidance; configuration-file locations and client behavior can change between releases.

Install manually with Python

The project states that Python 3.10 or newer is required and that no external services or API keys are required. Python 3.11 appears in a manual-install example, but it is not stated as the minimum requirement.

  1. Create and activate a virtual environment using your preferred Python 3.10-or-newer installation.

  2. Install the package inside that environment with pip install mcp-book-lover.

    Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Configure your MCP client to launch the installed server, following the project’s current instructions for that client.

The repository also documents a development workflow using uv sync and the MCP Inspector, intended for contributors or people working from the source rather than a basic client setup.

Know where the library and files are stored

Data Default location What it contains
Library database ~/.mcp-book-lover/books.db SQLite database for the book library
Downloaded books ~/Books Downloaded files, according to the project README

These local paths explain where to look for library data and downloaded files. They do not establish that the database is encrypted, backed up automatically, or covered by a particular privacy guarantee. Protect and back up files according to your own needs.
