“Caller name display” on Android can mean three different things: the name or spam label shown for an incoming call, a voice announcement of an incoming caller, or the number and name other people see when you call them. They use separate settings.
On phones using Google’s Phone app, incoming identification is controlled at Phone → More options → Settings → Caller ID and spam → See caller ID & spam. Spoken announcements are at Phone → More options → Settings → Caller ID announcement → Announce caller ID. On Samsung Galaxy phones, your outgoing number is usually managed under Phone → More options → Settings, then More, Supplementary settings, or a similarly named caller-ID menu. Carrier and region restrictions can change what you see.

First, identify which caller-ID behavior you want to change
Before changing a switch, decide whether the problem is happening when someone calls you, when your phone speaks aloud, or when you call someone else. These controls do not substitute for one another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| What you see or hear | Setting to look for | What changing it does |
|---|---|---|
| A business name, person label, or “suspected spam” warning on an incoming call | Google Phone: See caller ID & spam | Turns incoming caller identification and spam labeling on or off. It does not hide your number when you make calls. |
| Your phone reads an incoming caller’s name or number aloud | Caller ID announcement | Lets you choose Always, Only when using a headset, or Never. |
| Your number is shown, hidden, or marked as private on the recipient’s phone | Carrier or dialer caller-ID controls, often under Samsung’s supplementary call settings | Controls outgoing number presentation where the carrier permits it. The recipient’s contacts and caller-ID databases may still supply a name. |
Android menus vary by the default Phone app, Android version, mobile carrier, country, and device software. If a path below is not present, first identify which Phone app opens when you tap a telephone number.

Turn incoming caller-name and spam display on or off in Google Phone
Google Phone’s caller-ID feature can identify businesses and potential spam callers even when a number is not saved in your contacts. Use this path for the name, business label, or spam warning shown on the incoming-call screen.
Change the setting
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More options, usually the three-dot button.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Caller ID and spam.
- Switch See caller ID & spam on to receive identification and spam labels, or off to reduce those labels and warnings.
Turning the switch off does not make your own outgoing calls anonymous. It only changes how your phone identifies incoming numbers. It also does not remove names saved in your own contacts: a contact’s locally stored name can still appear when that person calls.
When keeping it on is useful
- Unknown business calls can be identified without saving every number first.
- Potential spam warnings can help you decide whether to answer.
- Incoming numbers can be matched with information available to Google’s caller-ID service.
When turning it off may be preferable
- You do not want incoming call information used by a caller-ID service.
- You prefer to assess unknown calls without automatic labels.
- The labels are inaccurate or distracting.
Google states that using caller-ID and spam protection may require information about calls to be sent to Google. Review that trade-off before enabling the feature, especially on a work or shared phone. Availability can also depend on the country, device build, and dialer configuration.

Make Android announce a caller’s name or number aloud
Voice announcements are independent of the on-screen caller-ID switch. Google’s instruction is: “To announce a caller’s name or number, turn on Caller ID announcement.” The feature uses text-to-speech, so it needs a supported language; the headset-only choice also needs a connected headset.
Choose an announcement mode in Google Phone
- Open Phone.
- Tap More options and then Settings.
- Tap Caller ID announcement.
- Tap Announce caller ID.
- Choose Always, Only when using a headset, or Never.
Always speaks the caller’s name or number through the phone in supported situations. Only when using a headset limits the announcement to calls received while a headset is connected. Never disables spoken caller identification while leaving any on-screen caller label controlled by the separate caller-ID setting.
If announcements do not work
- Confirm that a text-to-speech language supported by the phone is installed and selected.
- For headset-only announcements, connect the headset before testing and check that the phone recognizes it.
- Raise media or accessibility speech volume if the announcement is too quiet; the exact volume controls vary by Android version.
- Make sure you changed Caller ID announcement, not just See caller ID & spam.
Show or hide your own number when you make calls
If your goal is “stop my name and number showing when I call,” do not change Google Phone’s incoming caller-ID switch. Outgoing caller ID is a carrier-controlled service exposed through the dialer’s additional call settings.

Samsung Galaxy path
On many Samsung Galaxy models using Samsung’s Phone app:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Phone.
- Tap More options.
- Tap Settings or Call settings.
- Open More, Supplementary settings, or the menu with a similar name.
- Find the caller-ID option. Depending on the carrier and region, choices can include showing your number, hiding your number, or using the network default.
Samsung notes that older Android versions can use different steps. If you cannot find the control, search the Phone settings for caller ID, show my caller ID, or supplementary services.
What the choices mean
| Choice | Typical result | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Show number | Your line’s number is presented to the receiving network when permitted. | The recipient may still see a contact name or a database label associated with that number. |
| Hide number | The recipient may see “Private,” “Unknown,” or a similar result. | Some carriers, countries, businesses, and emergency services do not allow blocking, and some recipients reject withheld calls. |
| Network default | The carrier’s provisioned preference is used. | The visible options and their effect are carrier-specific. |
Changing this setting affects how your number is presented; it does not erase your number from a recipient’s address book or from every caller-ID database. A person who saved your number can still see the name they assigned to it, and a business caller-ID service can use its own records.

Dual-SIM phones
On a dual-SIM device, inspect the settings associated with the SIM or calling line you actually use. One carrier may permit caller-ID blocking while the other does not. Test each line separately after changing the preference, because a setting applied to one SIM may not apply to the other.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a name can still appear after you hide your number
Handset caller-ID settings are only one part of what the recipient sees. A name may remain visible for several reasons:
Recommended Free Tools
- The recipient saved your number. Their contacts app can display its own name for the number.
- The network does not honor the request. Carrier policy, country rules, business lines, and special services can override or ignore caller-ID blocking.
- A caller-ID database supplies a label. The receiving carrier or a business caller-ID service may associate information with the call.
- You changed the wrong control. Turning off See caller ID & spam changes incoming identification on your phone, not your outgoing presentation.
- The call uses another SIM or line. A dual-SIM phone can send the call through a line with a different policy.
To diagnose the result, call a person who has not saved your number, ask what appears, and confirm which SIM placed the call. Do not assume that a displayed name proves your phone’s own outgoing setting is being ignored.

Google Phone versus Samsung Phone: which path should you use?
| Task | Google Phone | Samsung Phone |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming business names and spam labels | Phone → More options → Settings → Caller ID and spam → See caller ID & spam | Look for the caller-ID and spam section in the Samsung Phone settings; labels differ by software and carrier. |
| Spoken incoming announcements | Phone → More options → Settings → Caller ID announcement → Announce caller ID | The exact availability and wording depend on the installed dialer and software version; check the Phone app’s call settings. |
| Outgoing number presentation | Often exposed through carrier or additional call settings when supported; Google’s incoming switch does not control it. | Commonly under Settings/Call settings → More or Supplementary settings, subject to carrier policy. |
There is no universal Android menu. A Galaxy phone set to use Google Phone can show Google’s path, while a different Galaxy software version can show Samsung’s labels. The app that is set as default for calls determines which menus you should follow.
Troubleshoot a missing or ineffective caller-ID option
The menu is missing
- Open the app that actually handles calls and verify whether it is Google Phone or Samsung Phone.
- Install available updates for the Phone app and Android system, then reopen the settings.
- Check whether the device is using a managed work profile or carrier-specific dialer that limits settings.
- On a dual-SIM phone, open the settings for the active line.
If See caller ID & spam is unavailable, the function may not be supported in your country, device build, or dialer configuration. A missing outgoing caller-ID option is commonly a carrier limitation rather than a hardware fault.
The switch is present but has no visible effect
- Place a test call after changing the setting; an existing call log entry will not change retroactively.
- Confirm that the call used the intended SIM and that the carrier accepted the preference.
- Ask the recipient whether the number was saved locally or supplied by their network.
- For incoming identification, remember that a contact name can continue to appear even when service-based identification is off.
The caller name is wrong
Service-based caller labels can be incomplete or outdated. Compare the label with the number itself and use your contacts entry as the authoritative name for people you know. Turning off service-based identification removes its labels and warnings but does not correct the underlying database.
Privacy and practical trade-offs
Incoming identification is convenient, but Google says caller-ID and spam protection may send information about calls to Google. Decide whether the benefit of business recognition and possible spam warnings justifies that data use for your situation. You can leave the feature off and still receive calls normally; you simply lose those service-generated labels.
Outgoing number hiding offers more privacy from casual recipients, but it can reduce trust, cause calls to be rejected, and does not guarantee that no identifying information will be available to the receiving network. It also cannot override a name already stored by the recipient.
Spoken announcements are primarily an accessibility and hands-free convenience. Use Only when using a headset if you want announcements while driving or working without making caller information audible to people nearby. Use Never when a shared room or sensitive environment makes spoken names undesirable.
Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Want to remove “spam” or business labels from calls arriving on your phone? Turn off See caller ID & spam in Google Phone.
- Want the phone to stop speaking names? Set Announce caller ID to Never.
- Want announcements only through earphones? Choose Only when using a headset and verify text-to-speech support.
- Want to hide your number from people you call? Use the carrier-facing caller-ID control in the Phone app, commonly Samsung’s Supplementary settings; availability depends on the network.
- Still seeing a name after hiding your number? Check the recipient’s contacts, caller-ID database, carrier policy, and the SIM used for the call.
