Use your device’s Date & Time settings to control the clock. Turn automatic date/time on when you want the device to synchronize with a network. Turn it off before entering a date or time yourself. Automatic time-zone selection is a separate setting on most devices, so you can allow the clock to sync while choosing a zone manually—or disable both automatic controls.
The exact switch depends on the operating system, device manufacturer, internet connection, location permissions, carrier rules, and workplace policies. The procedures below cover current iPhone, Android, Windows 10 and 11, and Mac settings, plus the most common reasons a control is missing or unavailable.

Automatic time and automatic time zone are different controls
Automatic date and time synchronizes the clock itself. The device normally obtains the current time from a network service, mobile carrier, or another approved source. Automatic time zone chooses the regional offset, including daylight-saving changes where applicable. These functions work together but are not identical.
For example, a phone can have the correct universal time but the wrong local hour if its time zone is set incorrectly. Conversely, a manually selected time zone can be useful when traveling or testing an application, even while the clock remains synchronized automatically.

| Platform | Automatic clock control | Time-zone control | What manual entry usually requires | Common dependencies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Set Automatically | Time Zone and location-based zone detection | Turn off Set Automatically | Internet, Location Services, carrier or region rules, Screen Time, management profiles |
| Android | Automatic date and time or Set automatically | Automatic time zone | Turn off the device’s automatic control | Network, location on some devices, manufacturer and Android-version differences |
| Windows 10/11 | Set time automatically | Set time zone automatically | Turn off Set time automatically, then choose Change | Internet, Windows policies, daylight-saving setting |
| Mac | Set time and date automatically | Set time zone automatically using your current location | Turn off automatic date/time, then choose Set | Internet, Location Services, administrator permissions |
When automation is disabled, the displayed time becomes your responsibility. A clock that is only a few minutes wrong can affect authentication codes, calendar alerts, email and message timestamps, file dates, certificates, and time-sensitive applications.
Turn automatic date and time on or off on an iPhone
Turn automatic date and time on
- Connect the iPhone to the internet.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Date & Time.
- Turn on Set Automatically.
With this option enabled, the iPhone sets the clock using the selected time zone and a network time source. Apple’s guidance describes this as setting the date and time automatically based on the time zone.
Turn it off and set the clock manually
- Open Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Turn off Set Automatically.
- Tap Time Zone and choose a city if you need a different zone.
- Tap the displayed date to edit the date and time.
Turning off the switch is normally required before the date or time fields can be edited. If you only need to correct the region, change the time zone rather than entering an arbitrary clock time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLet the iPhone detect the time zone from location
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Scroll to System Services.
- Turn on Setting Time Zone.
Location-based detection is separate from the main date-and-time switch. An iPhone may therefore have automatic time enabled while still being unable to determine the correct zone if this system service is disabled.

If Set Automatically is dimmed or unavailable
- A carrier or regional rule may prevent manual changes or automatic switching.
- A Screen Time passcode can restrict date-and-time changes.
- A corporate or school management profile can enforce the setting.
- The phone may need an internet connection or a restart after reconnecting.
Check those restrictions before repeatedly changing the switch. If the iPhone is managed by an organization, only its administrator may be able to unlock the control.
Turn automatic date and time on or off on Android
Find the controls
- Open the Clock app.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Tap Change date and time.
Google documents this route, but Android manufacturers can rename, move, or combine the controls. On some phones the same page is under the system Settings app rather than the Clock app. If you cannot find it, open Settings and search for date and time, automatic date and time, or time zone.
Turn automatic date and time on
Enable Automatic date and time, or the similarly named Set automatically control. The device then uses a network-provided clock. Keep the phone connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi while it updates.
Control automatic time-zone detection
Enable Automatic time zone when you want Android to select the zone. Depending on the device, this may use the cellular network, location services, or both. A Wi-Fi-only tablet can show different options because it has no mobile carrier signal for zone detection.

Set Android’s date, time, or zone manually
- Return to Clock > More > Settings > Change date and time, or open the equivalent system page.
- Turn off the available automatic date-and-time control.
- Choose the date, time, or time-zone field that you want to edit.
- Save or confirm the new value if your manufacturer’s interface asks you to do so.
Some versions present one Set automatically switch; others expose separate switches for date/time and time zone. Do not assume that changing one has changed the other.
Why Android instructions differ
- Phone makers customize Settings names and menu placement.
- Android versions expose different combinations of network and location controls.
- Tablets without cellular radios may not offer carrier-based zone detection.
- Enterprise management can disable manual changes.
Google summarizes the feature as allowing users to change the clock’s date, time, and time zone. The practical control names on your device remain the authority, so use the Settings search field when the documented path does not match your screen.
Turn automatic date and time on or off in Windows 10 or Windows 11
Turn automatic time on
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Open Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically.
Windows then synchronizes the clock rather than relying on a value you type. Keep the computer connected to the internet so synchronization can occur.
Set the Windows clock manually
- Go to Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn off Set time automatically.
- Find the date-and-time control and select Change.
- Enter the correct date and time, then confirm the change.
If Change is unavailable, the automatic switch is usually still on, or an administrator policy is enforcing the clock.

Choose how Windows handles the time zone
On the same page, Set time zone automatically controls automatic zone detection. When automatic zone handling is off, Windows also provides Adjust for daylight saving time automatically where applicable. Select the appropriate time zone manually when traveling, testing software, or correcting a wrong regional setting.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 use this Date & time page, although visual details can vary by update. A work or school computer may receive a policy that prevents users from changing the clock or time zone.

Turn automatic date and time on
- Open the Apple menu.
- Select System Settings.
- Choose General, then Date & Time.
- Turn on Set time and date automatically.
- Choose a network time server if macOS prompts you.
Apple notes that a network time server can supply the clock automatically. Correct time matters on a Mac because email, message, and file timestamps depend on it.

- Remain in System Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Turn on Set time zone automatically using your current location.
- Allow Location Services if macOS requests permission.
This location setting is independent of the network time-server setting. You can synchronize the clock automatically while selecting a zone yourself, but the local hour will be wrong if the selected zone is wrong.
Best Value
Set the Mac clock manually
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Turn off Set time and date automatically.
- Click Set.
- Enter the date and time, then click Set again.
You may need administrator authentication to change these settings. Re-enable automatic time when the temporary manual change is no longer needed.
What to check when the switch is missing, greyed out, or ineffective
The clock will not synchronize
- Confirm that the device has working internet access. A connected Wi-Fi symbol does not always mean that the network can reach the time service.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi or mobile data, then reopen Date & Time.
- Restart the device after restoring connectivity.
- Install available operating-system updates if the setting behaves inconsistently.
Manual changes can appear to work temporarily while the device remains disconnected, then be overwritten as soon as synchronization resumes.
The time is correct but the hour is wrong
- Inspect the time-zone setting separately from the clock setting.
- On iPhone and Mac, check the relevant Location Services option for automatic zone detection.
- On Windows, review Set time zone automatically and daylight-saving handling.
- On Android, check both Automatic time zone and any location permission used by the manufacturer’s interface.
A wrong zone is especially common after travel, when a device is restored, or when location services were disabled for privacy.
The control is locked
- On iPhone, check Screen Time restrictions, carrier or regional limitations, and management profiles.
- On Android, look for a work profile or device-management notice.
- On Windows and Mac, contact the administrator if the computer belongs to an employer or school.
Do not attempt to bypass an organizational policy by repeatedly changing the clock. The policy may be required for security, audit logs, or company services.
The time keeps changing back
Another service is probably still authoritative. Check whether automatic date/time or automatic time zone is enabled in a second settings page, whether a management profile is enforcing the value, or whether synchronization runs after each network connection. On Android in particular, manufacturer software may expose a second control under a different label.
When manual date and time changes make sense—and when they do not
Reasonable temporary uses
- Testing an application’s behavior at a particular date or time.
- Using a device in a location where network or carrier time is unavailable.
- Correcting a known zone or clock error while troubleshooting connectivity.
- Working with a controlled test environment that specifically requires a fixed clock.
Risks of leaving automation off
- Authentication systems can reject codes or secure connections when the clock is outside their tolerance.
- Email, chat, calendar, photo, and file timestamps can be misleading.
- Scheduled reminders and time-sensitive app actions can run early or late.
- Daylight-saving transitions may be missed or applied incorrectly.
- Logs from different devices may no longer line up during troubleshooting or incident review.
For ordinary daily use, automatic date/time and a correctly detected or selected time zone are the safer combination. If you manually changed the clock for a test, restore the automatic controls immediately afterward.
A cross-platform recovery checklist
- Identify whether the error is the clock, the time zone, or both.
- Connect the device to a reliable network.
- Open the platform-specific Date & Time page.
- Turn automatic date/time on and wait for synchronization.
- Check automatic time-zone detection or select the correct zone manually.
- Verify the displayed time against a trusted current-time reference.
- Reopen an affected app or service so it can read the corrected clock.
- If a switch remains unavailable, check location permissions, Screen Time, carrier or regional restrictions, software updates, and management policies.
Use manual entry only when there is a clear reason. The setting names differ, but the reliable pattern is consistent: locate Date & Time, separate clock synchronization from time-zone selection, disable automation before editing, and restore automation when finished.
